GET STARTED

Dear Jazz Educator,Our goal at Belwin Jazz / Alfred Music is to provide you with all you need to succeed in teaching the art of jazz—it’s as simple as that.

Here are two general categories of music for your program:

• Performance music for jazz ensemble: Our jazz charts cover a variety of styles, difficulty levels, solo features, jazz standards, pop tunes, and Latin charts. We all know that jazz standards are essential to every jazz library, but in 2015, appealing to the students and to the audience with a contemporary jazz sound is important as well. It can be a straight-eighth groove, swing, or hip pop tune arranged for jazz ensemble—it’s all good music.

• Jazz supplemental resources: Jazz play-alongs, big band play-alongs, etudes, vocals, theory, improvisation, articulation, music notation software, and rhythm section resources are but a few of the tools and materials we have to allow you to educate your students in jazz!

Please check out alfred.com for jazz resources for your program.

Our enclosed MP3 disk has full-length recordings of all of our new charts performed by a superb big band—listen and select what is best for your band. Our jazz play-alongs go beyond all the others—really! Check them out.

Remember, your passion for jazz will be the catalyst for great jazz education.

Have a great year, and most importantly, have fun playing jazz!

Pete BarenBreggeInstrumental Jazz Editor

HAVE YOU NOTICED?Have you noticed that Belwin Jazz demo recordings are superior to our competition? At Belwin Jazz, we hire superb professional musicians to create the best recordings. JAZZ ETUDES & PLAY-ALONGS

Playing on the ChangesBy Bob Mintzer

These 13 jazz etudes review various chord qualities found in jazz tunes in all 12 keys. Areas covered include major 7th chords, minor 7th chords, dominant 7th chords, minor ii(b5) chords, tritone substitutions, and a variety of progressions using all the above. Each etude solo traverses the changes in a way that familiarizes players with the sound of each harmonic setting. They are also modeled after ideas, such as melodic and rhythmic patterns, or singable melodies, that performers should strive to use when improvising through the chord changes.
