Nestico’s long career as composer/arranger for the Count Basie Orchestra (1967- 1984) produced ten albums by that powerhouse organization, four of which won Grammy awards. During the same period Nestico was a staff arranger/orchestrator for Capitol Records, collaborating on some 63 different albums. A native of Pittsburgh PA, Nes- tico got his start as a staff arranger for WCAE in Pittsburgh at age 17. Each received a a full $500.00 jazz scholarship for the 2014-15 school year. The scholarships fund a series of private one-hour jazz-based les- sons from an instructor chosen by the Central Texas Jazz Society. Lessons began at the end of October. This year's scholarship delibera- tions were unusually difficult, due to the number of applicants for the program. Applications were re- ceived from a total of 11 students, from Lamar Middle School (Temple), Travis Science Academy (Temple), Temple High School and Lake Belton Middle School. Board members Ben Irom and Steve Pettit assisted Brent in selecting the winning applicants. Lizette Wong is an eighth grade student at Travis Science Academy. Her band directors are William Rachal and Marcos Duran. Her primary instrument is piano, although she also plays vi- braphone and xylophone. This is her second year of participation in the Advanced Jazz Band. She has studied piano for eight years. Lizette's goals are to participate in the Temple High School jazz band and to continue playing piano and studying theory. “This scholar- ship is important for me because I believe that it will help improve my jazz piano playing and improvisa- tion in the future", she adds. Full-year Scholarships Awarded

The Temple Jazz Orchestra will go Nestico this Saturday, Novem-ber 15, as TJO explores the music of arranger Sammy Nestico.

gets from the jazz orchestra is in-stantly identifiable. Nestico’s long career as composer/arranger for the Count Basie Orchestra (1967-1984) produced ten albums by that powerhouse organization, four of which won Grammy awards.

During the same period Nestico was a staff arranger/orchestrator for Capitol Records, collaborating on some 63 different albums.

WJO: Jazz a la Carbonara...The Waco Jazz Orchestra concert on October 13 featured the band with vocalist Bruce Carbonara, in a program of music associated with Frank Sinatra. WJO director Tim Cates notes that the band will celebrate the Christmas sea-son with a performance at 7:30 pm on Monday December 8 at McLennan Community College’s Ball Performing Arts

Center. The concert will include a guest appearance by vocalist Beth Ullman.

clarinet and guitar. He is a member of the THS wind ensemble and the Temple Blues.

Cole traces his involvement in jazz to middle school, where he joined the Bonham Jazz Band. Initially an alto saxophonist, he switched to bass when he joined the Temple Blues. He continues to play bass in this, his second year in the THS jazz program.

He lists among his accomplishments playing the Tarleton and Temple College Jazz Festivals with the Temple Highlighters and Temple Blues, and performing at the Jazz Education Network’s festival in Dallas in January of this year, where he had a chance to talk to Felix Pastorius, son of the legendary jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius.

Cole hopes to use the scholarship to “take ownership of and further my musical studies”. Cole’s scholarship will enable him to continue his studies with bassist

seventh grade alto saxophonist at South Belton Middle School, where his band directors are Chris Pulley and Janice Motl. He is a member of the SBMS jazz band and wind ensemble. His director describes him as one who possesses “natural talent paired with

superior practice habits”. He has shown a particular affinity for the study of theory. Josh will be studying with Dr. Colin Mason.

of wild parties and trombonious fests...CTJS is planning for a wild jazz

party next February, with special guest, bassist Ken Wild.

The fifth annual CTJS Jazz Party is planned for Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Hilton Garden Inn Temple. The party

will feature Ken with the CTJS Jazz All-Stars under the direction of pianist Ben Irom. Ken will also present clinics at Temple College and McLennan Community College. A jazz party is tentatively planned for earlier that week in Waco, but details are

not yet available.Ken was a founding member of

the jazz fusion group Seawind in the 1970's. He’s been a busy member of the LA music scene since the mid seventies, performing with a wide range of musicians in jazz and other genres and recording in the studios.

25th Annual Temple College Jazz Festival have been announced.

The festival will feature trombonist Andre Hayward of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with the Temple Jazz Orchestra,

under the direction of Tom Fairlie, on Saturday March 28, 2015. On Friday, March 27, pianist Stefan Karlsson will perform with the Temple College Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ben Irom, and with TC7 (formerly known as TC Fusion).

Thursday's featured performers will be Henry Brun & the Latin Playerz featuring vocalist Judi Deleon, along with the Temple College Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

TJO Channels Sammy Nesticobig bands of Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Gene Krupa, and Charlie Barnet.

Nestico joined the United States Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. as staff arranger, and subsequently became the leader of the famous Airmen of Note. After 15 years with the Air Force, he spent time with the United States Marine Band in Washington, serv-ing as chief arranger and director of the White House orchestra during the Kennedy and Johnson administra-tions.

Nestico’s credits as an arranger range from Basie through film, studio, and television, and include work with an extensive list of performers, such as Barbra

Streisand, Natalie Cole, Frank Sinatra, Bing Cros-by, Sarah Vaughan, and Nancy Wilson. His over 600 arrangements are standards in the big band reper-toire of both student and professional ensembles.

Saturday’s concert represents the sixth consecutive year in which TJO has highlighted the work of famous jazz composer/arrangers. The fall concert unfolds Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center on the Temple College main campus.

Tickets for the concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students. TJO is directed by Tom Fairlie; the concert is sponsored by Baylor Scott & White Health with as-sistance from CTJS. (daw)
