April 2009

What about your friends?

JAYE

IF YOU LIVE LONG ENOUGH, you quickly learn friends come and go. And while some departures hurt more than others, it’s still a hassle learning to move on when a friendship’s run it’s course. My team and I think if we were better equipped with the wisdom neccessary to break the toxic ties that bind us to bad

BFFs and associates, we’d cut our losses much sooner. With this in mind, I challenged Devin Thomas, one of our talented editors, to pen a piece on ending a tough relationship with a girlfriend. In “A Clean, Classy Closure” (p. 72), she approaches an inherently-touchy issue with equal amounts of humor, sensitivity and thoughtfullness, and shows you how to part ways — with your dignity still intact. Thankfully, one thing you don’t need friends for is shopping, and starting on p. 15, we’ve put together a package of dresses for every body type, and the accessories you need to complete the look. My staff and I have been raving for months about the ease and accessiblity fashion affords in this unmissably turbulent economy. Spring’s all about mixing patterns (Check out “Geometry Lesson” on p. 78 for a tutorial), shiny must-have metallics (“Heavy Metal” on p. 86 show you the season’s best and what to pair them with), so starting with this issue, drop the dra-ma attached to past-due friendships, get inspired by the spring trends and don’t forget to e-mail and let me know what you think! Have a ball reading the issue!

“I don’t feel guilty at all if I’m just lying around, one of my best guilty pleasures is doing absolutely nothing.”– Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester, on lounging around when she’s not working, according to fanpop.com.

■ Best known as Blair Waldorf on the CW’s Gossip Girl, Leighton Meester, 22 (she’ll be 23 this month), got her start in the acting business in 1999 on Law & Order. Though she’s appeared on Entourage, CSI: Miami and 7th Heaven, Meester’s claim to fame came in the form of the role of quintessential mean girl on GG, a pop culture phenomenon. Despite Blair wearing and setting the latest trends, Meester lives pretty low-key when she’s off camera in cool, casual basics.

■ at first glance, this collection full of 1940s-inspired schoolboy- and girl-clad basics may not appear groundbreaking, but the classic approach to modernity that is Boy and Band of Outsid-ers develops a façade that we can’t help coveting. the mastermind behind the preppy label, scott stern-berg, launched Band of Outsid-ers (the menswear line, named after an actual band) in 2004, and a womenswear line inspired by menswear, titled Boy, in Fall 2008. Once a hollywood agent, sternberg, a dayton, Ohio na-tive, quenched his designing thirst by using, “what i could afford without having to buy hundreds of meters of fabric,” which happened to be vintage fabrics. with a cFda Fashion

award under his belt, and retail giants like, Barney’s, ron herman and Jeffrey as buyers, Boy and Band of Outsiders are rapidly making their mark in the fashion world. Both lines continue to mature with time—from cute to romantic—with countless inspirations each season, and maintain a recurring boyish mo-tif. sternberg wants to create his own community with the lines (kirsten dunst was his muse for spring ’09), and keeps it per-sonal with his web site in a blog that he publishes. sternberg understands the art of making clothes that keep his faithful consumers coming back for more—even kanye west and Jason wu are admirers. the brand was cre-ated to make us feel what we are

wearing, and change the way we think. “we’re always let-ting our guy or girl think about how they wear clothes differ-ently and how they buy clothes perfectly,” sternberg explains. sternberg admits the label isn’t about changing the face of menswear or womenswear, but about creating ageless pieces that you want to love.

lashing oUtthe new clinique high Impact curling mascara ($14, sephora, sephora.com.) should without a doubt be the newest addition to your makeup collection this spring . It’s arched wand eliminates the eyelash curler while lifting and extending each lash to its boldest and beautiful look yet.

the RetURn of the scRUnchieWhether it was adding personal style to your side ponytail or wrapped around your wrist, the decorative elastic hair tie, also known as the scrunchie, was in some way a part of every young woman’s childhood. We identify this 1980s and early-90s fad with assorted colors, textures, and numerous pattern combinations that allowed each girl the opportunity to portray her self-expression. though scrunchies have not always been the most sought out trend in the fashion world, 2009 is the year that embodies the idea that older trends always resurface, and with that, we have the return of the scrunchie. order yours at American Apparel for a budget-friendly $3.50.

faKe lashes that Don’t looK faKe!Fake lashes are a trend that has now become a new form of self-expression. there is a different style for each woman and the look she aspires to have. Lashes range from those that create a full and dramatic effect to ones that appear to be more natural and every day appropriate. mAc lash collection provides options such as the “21 Lash” that adds length and builds volume versus the “7 Lash” that creates a more natural length for day to day glamour.

Sensationally SilverDepending on the application, silver make up can work for both the day and the evening. If allover silver eye makeup is a bit much for your personality, try a small amount on the inner corners of your eyes, then bled slightly onto your inner upper lid. use any color across the rest of your lid to create wonderful combinations. check out department stores (brands like Rimmel London carry inexpensive products) and Victoria’s secret to acheive this spring trend.

for day: Apply silver eye shadow with a light hand over lid.

for evening: Apply silver eye shadow a little bit heavier and you can even wet your eye shadow or liner to help intensify the tone of your silver make up even further.

MOVIE NEWS >>With Madea goes to Jail still number one at the box office it is no wonder that Tyler Perry is inking more deals with his favorite production company, Lionsgate, according to a report penned by Emily Mcdonald at CinemaBlend.com. Perry is set to star in, direct and pen both movies. I Can Do Bad All By Myself was originally a Tyler Perry play and follows a young woman who moves in with her grandmother (Madea) after she suffers some domestic abuse. The second film, Why Did I Get Married Too will start filming later this year and is set for an Easter weekend release in 2010. Q: I am having major financial issues. My parents work, to sup-port me, (a college sophomore), my brother sister, and grandmother. I am not a straight A student, and only bring in financial aid to cover my college tuition. This past semester, I barely kept a 2.3 GPA, and I’m not as interested in college as I thought I would be. I really just want to drop out, and start living my life. This way, I don’t drain my parents finan-cially, and maybe even get to help them with their money problems. How important is a college degree when I could have experience instead? I don’t want to be a doc-tor or lawyer, so I really don’t need a degree to start working. I don’t know. I am tired of school, and working just looks better. Can you help me before I waste any more of my parents money.

A: I am the first to say the old adage, “College is not for everybody.” If I seriously believed that you were not a fit for a college campus, I would advise you to look at career options that do not require a degree — there are many good jobs that do not require a degree and provide a solid pay to their employees; but sadly alas, in your situation, I do not find this to be the case. You talk about leaving school as not to “waste your parent’s money,” as if that is a noble, selfless thing to do. I just think you want to quit college because it is not a walk in the park. You keeping a 2.3 GPA shows that you are working, but not committing yourself to your time in college, and that is not only a waste of money, but more importantly, your time. If you are serious about not wasting your parent’s money, then work to make your college experience a good one. Dedicate yourself to growing into the person who would be marketable in the changing economy. Look to get intern-ships that will provide college credits and, possibly, a solid paycheck. Take your college years to find whom you are, what you are good at, and what possible avenues you can take to build a solid career. Quitting school is just that: quitting. You gain noth-ing from the years you have put into college thus far.

Realistically, a college degree does not guarantee you a job, a paycheck, or a solid future. A college degree shows potential employers that you can be dedicated to a long-term task, that you are capable of learning and retaining knowledge, and that you are more than an 18-year-old kid, but a mature adult—with life experiences gained from a diverse educational system, that can be a positive, productive influence in the workplace. College students are not always inspired to be “the per-son they were meant to be,” but those who go into the experience ready to learn and grow will see the transformation of a high-school kid, to a college graduate; a transformation that will make the money your parents spent and your time well worth it. Stay in school, and learn in and out of the classroom to see just what you can become. ■

Full disclosure: Dara, our Web editor, sent me a Facebook-chat message raving about this stu-dent she met through the blo-gosphere. “Too good to be true, I thought.” After all, you don’t run into a chic, funny college senior who’d rather talk fashion than the faltering economy. So, thanks to Dara, here, we have Connie Wang, a 21-year-old college senior set to graduate next month. Blogger? Check. Super intern? Check. Sanctum of wisdom, advice and humor? Check. Don’t believe me? Just keep reading. – Michael Jones

Q: You founded a blog, pretty legit. What inspired you to start your blog?a: A super-cold, super-dull Minnesota winter break during my Freshman year of col-lege. I had kept personal blogs all through middle and high school, but I was really into the idea of starting a niche-fashion blog that was graphic-heavy and content-specific (my old Blogspot was totally inspired by TeenVogue and WhoWhatWearDaily). School and internships started get-ting hectic last summer, so I switched over to microblogging site Tumblr and am kind of obsessed with it right now.Q: Discuss the network-

ing opportunities social networks like Facebook, Myspace, twitter and blogs have given our generation.a: I think a lot about where I’d be if I didn’t have a blog, and I think I can honestly say that I would have never had the same internship opportuni-ties, my ambitions would have been much lower and I would have definitely not been able to get to fall in love with fashion with the kind of intensity and depth that I have. These social networking tools have not only afforded me the opportunity to practice creating fashion-related content that have totally helped me develop a writing style, but it’s put me in contact with some of my favorite people. We blog-gers are all cut from the same fabric: we’re a little random, we’re a lot passionate, and we all are online extroverts. It’s nice to be able to meet other lunatics like me. Q: Do you have any words of advice for students who are interning this summer?Be humble of your achieve-ments, be efficient at your tasks, be aware of everything going on around you, and be nice. Despite what you see on TV about how bitchy is the new black, having an attitude really gets you nowhere.

Also, keeping an intern journal is a wonderful way to chronicle your experiences. I have one notebook for every internship I’ve had and it’s always fun to look back to see the notes and thoughts I jotted down along the way (as well as all the clumsy coffee stains). But

if you’re going to keep your journal online, make sure you know exactly what you can and can’t blog about. Some places are very strict with nondisclo-sure agreements and a loose lip could get you in major trouble.Q: How did you go about getting your in-ternship at teen Vogue last summer?a: After doing copious research on Ed2010 (a com-munity of young magazine editors and magazine-editor wannabes who want to learn more about the industry) and contacting a few former maga-zine interns, I emailed my resume and cover letter out to a few publications in February, and I was absolutely besides myself when EJ, Teen Vogue’s Web editor, contacted me a day later. I imagined TeenVogue.com to be the perfect place to intern for the summer, combining my interest in online me-dia, my love for fashion, and my past experiences working with teens of all different backgrounds.I spent the latter part of my spring break in NY and came in for an interview. Despite a major cof-fee spill in Times Square, I had a wonderful inter-view with EJ where we went over my portfolio and cover letter together. A few days later, I received a call— I had gotten the job!Q: What did you enjoy the most about your internship? the least?I loved that I got a chance to do exactly what I love doing—reading and writing about fashion. It was hard to get used to the fact that I was actually working and not just goofing off. It’s amazing to be given the opportunity to be creative for a career.

I’ve got to say that the least fun part of my job involved sending out the thousands of giveaway items from one of the contests we held at the end of the summer. Internships involve a lot of grunt work—which I’m always happy to do—but I’m quite horrified at the quantity and quality of the epic paper cuts I suffered from packing the enve-lopes and boxes. Yikes.Q: Do you want to go back to the city this summer? a: I’m actually graduating this May so I’m plan-ning on moving to New York permanently! There’s something about NYC that makes me feel so vivacious—someone once told me that New York is the place that people go if they want to do their best at something. Whenever I’m there, I can’t >>

help but feed off that ambitious en-ergy. It’s infectious, and I love it! Q: What are your career aspira-tions?a: I’d love to be able to start my own teen publication. I’ve always had a vision of what Connie-the-teen would have loved to read and I’d love to bring it to fruition someday. Re-sponsible journalism is something I believe in and adolescents deserve to be engaged in a way that doesn’t presuppose that they’re all hedonistic, irresponsible slobs. Youth are inter-esting and interested, and I think that they’re capable of thinking and doing so much if they’re presented the resources to do it with. I want to start a gender-neutral publication that covers a panoply of topics that not only include fashion and pop culture, but also history and literature and science. When I was younger, I never enjoyed reading magazines that talked at me. I was always way more into ones that talked to me. Q: What do you enjoy the most about your school, University of California Berkeley? the least?a: Berkeley is an amazing place to develop a set of beliefs. Everyone here is deeply passionate about something and unabashed about it. The best part is that everyone is so open to having dialogues and being accepting of all different types of lifestyles. I have to admit though, I oftentimes get caught up in this “Berkeley Bubble” and it’s a rude awakening when I travel out of it and realize that not everyone is so tolerant and easygoing.

The least? Probably the hills. I used to attempt biking to class but the frustratingly vertical hills made it so hard. But hey, at least I can tell my kids that when I went to school, I did have to walk uphill both ways. Q: are you and your family

closely-knit? if so, discuss the importance of your family and friends.a: I’m one of those people that call home everyday. My family is my base and I couldn’t get anywhere without them. I’ve been so incredibly lucky to have parents and a sister that are so enthusiastic about me doing me, and whatever makes me happy makes them happy as well. They’ve always taught me that life is all about respect—and that not only means respecting others, society and this world, but perhaps most

importantly, respecting yourself. That means throwing your heart and soul into everything you do, and making sure that everything you do is worth throwing your heart and soul into. They’ve really taught me to live life with a purpose, and that’s something that I’m so grateful for. As for my friends, I can’t live without them ei-ther. I’m a fiercely independent person and I have my head way high up in the fashion clouds, so I can imagine how frustrating I can be. But my friends keep me grounded. They’re what keep me sane.

“My family really taught me to live life with a purpose, and that’s something that i’m so grateful for.”

50 JAYE | APRIL 2009

Page 51: JAYE magazine April 2009

Q: Who are your sources of inspi-rations?a: Blogs (flipping through style sites like Garance and Dropsnap are so ad-dicting). I also write for Chictopia.com so I’m inundated with amazing outfits by our users all the time. Besides that, I love looking at architecture books and wandering around cities.Q: name a few places you’d like to visit in your lifetime and why.a: I’m not a big traveler, but I’d love love love to attend Paris Fashion Week for more than obvious reasons. Besides that, inside Susanna Lau’s closet — can you imagine?!Q: Who are your favorite design-ers and brands?a: For pure aesthetic: Jil Sander, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Tsumori Chisato, Balenciaga, Hussein Cha-layan, Preen, Sandra Backlund, Rad Hourani. For actual purchasability: Payless (especially their Alice + Oliva boots), Topshop, Target’s in-house as well as designer-designed Go Interna-tional collections.Q: What are your favorite tV shows?a: Not a huge TV person, but I love Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks and No Reservations with Tony Bourdain. Actually, I could pretty much have a good time watching any-thing on the Food Network. I’m also particularly looking forward to Kelly Cutrone’s new show on Bravo.Q: What’s your favorite genre of music?a: Anything upbeat that I can sing and bop my head along to. Right now, I’ve got Ne-Yo, Phoenix and Born Ruf-fians on repeat.Q: What are your favorite mov-ies?a: I have terrible taste in movies. Em-barrassingly, I’m a fan of most movies with Hugh Grant. Q: How would you describe your

personal style?a: I’ve always enjoyed simply put together, unfussy outfits in exagger-ated proportions. I don’t wear jewelry, I don’t wear much prints, and I don’t wear many layers which means that what I do wear are usually stand-alone pieces that have a modern and almost-sculptural feel to them. I feel like I dress like how the Empire State Building would dress if it was a per-son, you know? I’ve also been really into freaking people out lately with one off-kilter ass-kicking accessory like a cape or a brass-knuckle clutch or a clodhopper wedge. I’ve been eyeing these Miu Miu steampunk sunglasses that I think I’m going to have to buy…Q: What’s your foolproof outfit, when nothing’s working and you’re running late?A: Above-the-knee printed dress, blazer, tights, black wedges and a canvas tote. Easy peasy.Q: What are three items that are always in your bag?a: Gah, I’m too boring. I guess my chapstick, my wallet and my keys (breaking into my house through my third-story bedroom window isn’t very fun). Finish the sentence: i never leave home without…a: My Crackberry.Q: Any final thoughts?Three things:1. Don’t wash your hair too often. 2. Being a little more thoughtful is never a bad thing. 3. And, “Art and love are the same thing: It’s the process of seeing yourself in things that are not you. It’s understanding the unreasonable.” – Chuck Klosterman ■

Some americans expect president Ba-rack Obama to fix all of our problems in one breath. Many college students find themselves in a similar position as

extra pressure and extremely high expectations are bestowed upon them. For instance, you are the first in your family to go to college. You made straight during high school and now you’re expected to do the same in college. You want to be more successful than your parents or your brother and become a top draft pick. No matter where you are in your college career, you have these high expectations placed upon you. Whether it comes from family, friends, or professors, we all have certain ex-pectations to live up to and it’s not always easy. Here, a few tips to handle high expectations: Take care of yourself. You are your most important asset and it is imperative to treat

yourself well. If you are not taking care of yourself, then you cannot perform well — men-tally or physically — and meet your expectations or anyone else’s. Take time out for you when you are feeling overwhelmed. Surround yourself with positive people. You are definitely the company you keep. If you are around people who are always bringing you or others down, then this will only lower your self-esteem and make you bitter or cynical.Have a plan of action. You under-stand your >>

FirSt perSon:college students weigh in on community colleges■ after reading the article “College Knowledge,” by the U.S. News education team, I found a new way to view college life. The article expresses the need for students to take time and do adequate research over commu-nity colleges in order to determine whether or not they could benefit from attending one. In these trying economic

times, I think many students have decided to attend two-year colleges instead of four-year universi-ties for many reasons, one being finances. Without performing the proper research, students could be facing more long-term prob-lems when attending community colleges than those students who attend four-year universities. i decided to do my own research to determine if some students feel that their particu-lar community college did or did

goals and dreams, things that you are trying to accomplish, and how to go about achieving those goals. Keep them in mind and stick to them. Take the necessary steps that you feel best suit you and follow through with your plan. Realize that some expectations do not always come from a bad place. People that we love the most and that are the closest to us often have their own suggestions about what we should do. These expectations only come from a place of love; they simply want us to be successful because they see potential. If they set high expectations for you, keep in mind they only do it because they feel that you are willing enough to go above and beyond. – Melissa Kimble

april is recognized as national child abuse prevention month, a time to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect encouraging individuals and communities to support children and families. The his-tory of this prevention month dates back to the spark of the early 1980s, when the era recognized itself a time of continu-ing abuse and neglect among children. The need for innovative programs to prevent child abuse and assist parents and families affected by it was designated to the u.s. senate and house of repre-sentatives in 1982. what used to be a week of programs and events, was finally extended to an entire month’s worth of appropriate programming, ceremonies and activities a year later in 1983. To get involved in a city or state near you, log onto www.childwelfare.gov and click the “get involved” link to find local pro-grams, ceremonies and activities for you participate in. Your weekend of volunteer-ing can change another child’s life. it is never too late to get involved! if you miss out this month, help is needed year-round with numerous childcare services and big brother/big sister organizations.

april 22 is national earth day, a day that observes a tradition to inspire awareness and appreciation for the earth’s environment. earth day was recognized at a september 1969 conference in seattle, wash., where u.s. senator gaylord nelson of wisconsin announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration for the environment or an “environmental teach-in”. Throughout the decades, earth day is the only event celebrated simultaneously around the world by people of all backgrounds, faith, and nationalities. The day, april 22, was chosen for several reasons, but mainly senator nelson chose this day for college students because it did not inter-fere with finals, breaks, holidays, and still early enough to have great weather. Sneed is now a gradu-ate of Texas A&M Univeristy-Com-merce, where he obtained a marketing degree and now works as a Territorial Manager for Blue Bell Creamery in katy, texas. I also spoke with Latonya Moore, who is currently enrolled in the Lone Star College System. She is rounding out her second year in college and plans to transfer to the University of Houston this fall. “I couldn’t believe how help-ful everyone has been these past few years. I was able to make sure that all of my core classes would transfer,” Moore says. “I’m really excited about

transferring to U of H in the fall!” I happen to be the product of both a major university and a com-munity college. In fall 2005, I was enrolled at the University of North Texas. After some family financial is-sues arose, I moved back to Houston, where I am now enrolled in the Lone Star College System. My goal is to transfer to the University of Houston in the summer and finish my journal-ism degree. I can say that the classes are a lot more intimate and the atmosphere is great for learning. My counselors have continued to show in-terest in my growth and have helped me keep a clear mind about transfer-ring. Needless to say, good things can emerge from the community college, but you have to communicate with your teachers and counselors in order to get the job done. – T.B.

hundreds of thousands of jobs have been cut and unemployment rates are through the roof, and college students and recent graduates are quickly realizing that there is no room for error. U.S. news featured a list of habits that job seekers should break to increase their chances of finding employment:

you’re counting on one big thing to come through. it’s time to stop waiting for something to possibly fall through the cracks. get in there and gain the experience, even if it’s not something you intend to do in the long haul. well-rounded individuals get the job; those who wait suffer financially. you’re sending lots of recommendation letters. recommendation letters are a good thing, but some business sectors would like you to save all the overkill for another company. be safe and ask the company if they want you to send letters.

you’re faking your weaknesses. don’t do it! companies have heard the fake answer to this interview question time and time again, and do not have time to listen to it once more. a simple phone call to a former employer can solve this matter.you know exactly what you want. we aren’t trying to discourage you from that dream job on your career wish list. as the saying goes, “if you are in the job of your dreams, you will never work a day in your life,” but at the same time, keep in mind the situation we are in. You might not start in the field of your dreams, but work hard and get there!you see your job search as personal and private. do not be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and get other people involved in the daunting job search. it’s shocking where help finding a job can be found: co-workers, friends and family members. don’t judge their usefulness, and don’t be too proud to share. – B.D.

WhAt is thE FAFsA?According to the official government site for the fAfSA (fafsa.ed.gov), the free Application for federal Student Aid (known as the fAfSA) is a form that can be filled out annually by current and anticipating university students (both undergraduate and graduate) and sometimes their parents in the united States to determine their eligibility for federal student financial aid (including pell grants, Stafford loans, pluS loans, and work-study programs). in addition, most states and schools use information from the fAfSA to award non-federal aid. the fAfSA consists of numerous questions regarding the student’s finances, as well as those of his or her family; these are entered into a formula that determines the Expected family contribution (Efc).

■ Federal Pell Grants are awarded usually only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or a professional degree.

■ the Academic competitiveness Grant (AcG) awards students based on academic excellence.the national Science & Mathematics Access to Retain talent grant (SMARt grant) is available during the third and fourth years of undergradu-ate study to full-time students who are eligible for the federal pell grant and who major in specific math and science concentrations.Source: federal Student Aid official web site

FinAnciAl Aid 411According to financial Aid facts, for 2008-2009 the college Board reports that the average tuition and fees for an in-state student at a four-year, public institution are $6,585 ($14,333 including room/board). for a private, four-year college: $25,143 ($34,132 including room/board). And for a public, two-year: $2,402.on average, college tuition increases by 8 percent per year — that translates into college tuition doubling every 9 years! the good news is that few families actu-ally pay the “sticker price.” once you deduct grants, scholarships and loans from the bottom-line, most families are left with a very manageable net cost.nearly $107 billion in financial aid was distributed to undergraduate students in academic year 2007-2008; the majority coming from either loans or institutional grants. Below is a list of financial aid sources for 2007-2008 (in billions) for undergraduate students.

Below is the percentage of undergraduate students re-ceiving financial aid in the 2003-2004 academic year:

■ two-year public colleges: 46.8 percent

■ four-year public colleges and universities: 68.6 percent

■ four-year private colleges and universities: 83.3 percent

■ private, for profit (proprietary) institutions: 89.9 percent

Smarty PantSJust because you’re in college for an education, doesn’t mean you always take school as seriously as you should. But thanks to the president and first lady, students are realizing the sky’s the limit with a good education and jumping head first into the books. Are you one of them?

■ Most trends you usually try to avoid, but what if one came along and it actually made sense? In a society where average is considered normal, President Barack obama has ushered in a new wave of thinking. Perhaps the most exciting president since Kennedy or Clinton, obama is articulate, intelligent, a scholar, and a leader who is disarm-ingly charming. With the coolness of an old-school jazz player, the confi-dence of an athlete, and the heart of a fighter, not only does he make smart look cool, he makes intelligence appear effortless. to him, it’s seems, gaining knowledge is easy. not only is the president an ambassador of this new trend, but the First Lady Michelle obama holds her own beside him. they are living proof that along with intelligence, hard work, and perseverance our nation’s youth can create whatever opportuni-ties that their heart’s desire. Reflect-ing the value that the obamas place on education, more Americans are admitting that they are interested in gaining more knowledge, speaking more articulately and making smarter

decisions. College students are start-ing to follow suit. “It was definitely a wakeup call for me,” Veronica Barnes, a stu-dent, says, as she recalls the moment Barack Obama was sworn into office. “Here is someone who has beaten the odds his entire life. He is the perfect example of why I need to focus on the bigger picture. there are no more excuses in school, at work, or in life.” Barnes began to take ac-tion by volunteering her time as an english tutor and encouraged other students to take part. Initially, she was shocked by the outpour of stu-dents wanting to help other students. “I never thought I would see so many guys who want to help tutor other students. one guy who tutored beside me passed out an obama pin to all the students we helped. He felt like once obama was elected, he had to do his part in bringing education back to the forefront.” students like La’shunna McGowan and shandria Carter have taken steps to make a more positive impact on their communities. the ambitious duo has started a >>

mentoring program for young ladies called “Virtuous young La-dies Mentoring.” Its focus is placed on girls between the ages of 10 to 17 years old and helping them grow into young women who can make smart decisions, act respon-sibly, and sharpen the skills they will need to succeed. the program not only sharpens up on their aca-demic skills and gain community service hours. the program was inspired by President obama’s acceptance as the democratic presidential nominee. “When the reality hit me that he could actually win, it was like something shifted. We knew then that we had to make a differ-ence,” McGowan admits. the program also ben-efits not only the young girls who gain mentors; it also helps the girls who become mentors. “to become a member and mentor of ‘Virtuous young Ladies Mentor-ing,’ an applicant must have at least a 2.8 GPA. this requires the young ladies participating in the program to set high standards for

themselves,” Carter reveals. “one of obama’s consis-tent attitudes is accountability. We want our mentors to be account-able for more than just them-selves. We wanted Virtuous young Ladies Mentoring to be a program that practices what it preaches.”

■ MAny CoLLeGe students have rededicated themselves to commitment to their education. taneisha Baker, a student at the university of tennessee at Mar-tin, agrees. “I now know that I limit myself to when I settle for average grades. Getting Cs and ds will not be enough if I want to become great in the future. And our future looks much brighter thanks to our new president.” Baker has recently raised her GPA and looks forward to law school in the next two years, a decision inspired by the obamas’ law school background. “I have often had dreams of going into politics, but never thought with my background that I would be able to enter into

that world,” steven robinson, a junior at Lane College in Jackson, tenn., says. “But now I see that different does not equal unintel-ligent. My background is a part of me but it does not define me.” students like denitra Brown might even admit that they have never had an inter-est in politics but obama has sparked that interest. “obama is the coolest person on the planet right now,” Brown gushes. “And for a president of a country — not an athlete or a rapper — to be considered cool, you know that times have definitely changed. He makes me strive to become an all around better person.” What will be the next step from here? As obama contin-ues to make history, college stu-dents must continue pushing the envelope to ensure the lives they once dreamed of will come true. expectations are now higher. When you’re juggling school, work and everything in between, it’s a chore to stick with those hard-to-keep

New Years Resolutions. Until now. Here, a guide to refresh your outlook on life, presence on the social

scene, eating habits, dwindling finances, study habits and stale relationship

Makeover your attitude■ Your attitude determines your alti-tude,” and thought, “What does this mean?” In short, visualize a can-do attitude to reach higher places in life. Your attitude drives your behavior, and your behavior is a direct replica of your innermost beliefs, values, and ultimately yourself. You can start to build a better attitude by taking the following steps: >> Be proactive. Take conscious control over your life, set goals, and work towards achieving them. Learn from mistakes—both yours and others. Instead of merely reacting to events as they happen, consciously engineer your own solutions to these events. >> Put First Things First. In other words: prioritize! Figure out what’s most important to you and cherish those things. >> Think Win/Win. In every situ-ation you encounter think of it as a

win/win situation. If this happens I win, if that happens I still win! Always be positive. >> Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. Look for an understanding in life’s circum-stances and grasp what is given to you. With this in mind, and a full comprehension of the situation, only then can others understand you. >> Know Your Self-Worth. This can be very crucial to your attitude adjustment. Know that you are worth the universe and settle for nothing less.>> Give Respect, Get Respect. Sure you’ve heard the saying “In order to get respect, you have to give it.” So be respectful of others and reap the rewards. >>

Makeover your study habits■ Let’s face it: After class, work, extracurricular activities, social ap-pearances, and, taking a brief moment for ourselves, the last spec of time is very used for studying. So, with little time, even less energy, and no desire, how does a twentysomething zombie find the will power to obtain respectable grades? Here, three simple solutions:>> Keep the end in mind. Don’t focus every bit of energy on the future and disregard the present. But, a daily reminder of what all this work can really create and how life is progressing might prompt a new wave of energy. Use this energy to reach set academic goals and to expand your breadth of knowledge. >> Set time aside. Remember, it doesn’t have to be followed exactly, but it will substantially reduce wasted time. It is shocking the hours

Makeover your relationship■ Ladies, it is the season for love and for rekin-dling an old flame. In order to do that, here are a few secrets to restore your love life. >> Allow your man to be himself. Let your man know you wouldn’t be the same without him. A happy man is one that has his own time, feels you are interested in what he likes, and gets to teach you something new. And, we like happy men!>> Be willing to compromise. Whatever issues surface in your relationship, you must be willing to compromise on those issues with your man. Hear his point of view and settle on common ground.>> Trust your man. Be confident in him and believe in the bond you two share. Trust that he wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize your relationship and reassure him that you, too, are trustworthy.>> Make time for him. Schedules this time of year are crazy but be sure to fit him in. Ar-range a special night out or plan to cook him dinner or something of that nature. You can de-vote an entire weekend to him and him alone!>> Be sexy for him. Our men are already intrigued by the sexiness we posses so lets turn it up. Pamper yourself, building up your aware-ness of your own sexiness, and indulge in some sexy attire. This will surely turn up the spark.

spent thinking about what needs to be done; not to mention the stress of forgetting about a project and having to throw it together at the very last minute. >> Do as much as possible without doing too much. Striving to be a complete individual is ideal; however, do employers want a well-rounded, worn out, at-the-edge-of-falling-apart individual? Learn to say no. And, there is nothing wrong with staying in if you have a big exam the next day. You will not be labeled a bookworm for taking one night off a week. After all, students are, ultimately, students first.

Makeover your social life■ Often, we find ourselves scheduling our social lives accord-ing to when our planners have a blank space. We write the activities that have been made available by our friends, but are they really what we want to do? Before you jot down the next cocktail hour, or sunrise yoga session, see if it lines up with your social persona—looking at yourself in regards to how you connect to the world. How do you identify this unique social persona? Start

by defining who you are in a social setting: What attributes are comfortable, and more importantly uncomfortable? How do others perceive you in situations? How do you per-ceive others? Then, determine if this lines up with who you want to be as a person. Does it vio-late any personal morals or standards? Does it work towards or against goals in other ar-eas of your life? Do people positively respond to your engagement in these activities? After those questions are answered, start making improvements: Change what needs to be changed. Even if you like who you are and where you’re at, it’s never a bad idea to work on your friendships. After all, it will only contribute to an even better social experience and stronger bonds. Finally, embrace who you are. If you enjoy staying home watching TiVo and primetime hits, find a couple girls who like to do that too, and tell your barhopping friends you’ll see them in the morning for Sex in the City-style brunch! Acknowledging and accepting yourself is the first step to enjoying your social life.

Makeover your diet

■ Have you wanted to shed a few pounds for awhile now? Or have you wanted to eat healthier foods that infuse your body with the nutrients you need? It may have even been your New Years Resolution, but you just can’t seem to figure out how to get started. Try these suggestions to help create a new you in a new way: >> eat breakfast. The old saying still holds true, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Dietitians have proved that eating a nutritious breakfast will help you to minimize hunger. Grab something quick and easy: cereals (whole grain,

with fiber), fruits and vegetables (apples, oranges, yogurts with fruits, and fruit smoothies), or a healthy peanut butter and banana sandwich (or-ganic peanut butter with banana slices on whole wheat bread).>> Switch to whole grains. Instead of reaching for the infamous white bread, try healthier 100 percent whole wheat bread. Whole grains are full of fiber leaving you feeling well-fed longer. Make at least half of the breads consumed every day whole grains and aim for three servings a day. Also, try whole-grain cereals, chips, and oatmeal.>> eat leaner meats. Meat is a great source of protein; however, lean meats you will reduce a major source of saturated fats. More protein will make you more full with fewer calories. Of course, a well-known source of protein is fish. Fish is a great choice for increasing protein intake, and some fish are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids which are an essential nutrient in your diets. >> Make time for exercise. Many campuses offer recreational facilities. Take advantage of the money you’re spending in student service fees. Eat-ing right and exercising will help you drop those unwanted pounds. Stay active. The increased exer-tion of energy will help you sweat off those pounds in no time. Soon, the results will show, thanks to a modified diet and a fitness regimen. – T.B. ■

■ It’s essential to wisely spend the hard-earned money you bring in. Sacrificing extras and splurges isn’t always easy, but with a few tips and adjustments, you’re sure to continue making ends meet. Below, our advice to help get you started:>> Get free money. Take your semester stipend and put it in an ING Savings Account. The longer the stipend is in there and the more you have, the more cash you earn. Whenever you need quick cash, you’re just a few clicks of a mouse away from making a withdrawal.>> Find cheaper entertainment. Try looking at the list of all student organizations on your campus. These activities are either free or designed for a college student’s budget. If you like playing video games, see if there is a video-gaming club on

Makeover your finances

your campus. Like reading? Look for a book club. Schools have so much to offer, and chances are you can find something you would like to do as much as going out and spending money. >> consult before you charge. Piling up credit card debt on top of student or personal loans can be disaster. It is wise to discuss your financial situation with a parent, fiscal counselor, or mentor before applying for credit cards. If you must get a credit card, make sure you have enough money to pay the bill when it’s due. >> look for a cheaper alternatives. Most products can be found at a cheaper price. You do not have to get it that same day; wait a couple of weeks—it may go on sale.

Botox’s New FaceTwentysomethings aren’t waiting for a midlife crisis to preserve their unblemished skin, but how do students feel? Randall Upshaw explores this emerging trend

When we think Botox, we typically think of the stars such as actress and

fashion designer Christina Fulton, model and actress Kelli McCarty and living-legend Janice Dickin-son that have gone to the extreme. However, these people are no longer a direct representation of what Botox can do for your face. Botox can temporarily smooth moderate to severe frown

lines between the brows in people from 18 to 65 years of age. It is becoming a trend, not only among celebrities, but for young people, who have jumped on the bandwagon in an effort to enhance — or preserve — their physical appearance. Dr. Mallika Marshall, MD, medical reporter for WBZ-TV News says, “Traditional Botox treatments are designed to smooth out wrinkles by freezing the muscles that cause

them. The idea of giving them to younger people is to prevent the creases from ever getting started”. Last year, women between the ages of 19 and 34 had more than 400,000 Botox procedures—and the numbers are increasing. When asked their opinions on Botox, students have different perceptions on the procedure. “Honestly, if I could afford the injections there would be no question as to whether or not I would get them on a regular basis. My only concern is that jobs are not guaran-teed and I still have so many ex-

penses that need to be taken care of before and after graduation. I don’t want to start something that I will not be able to maintain. If I need to get injections every four to six months then I want to be abso-lutely sure that I am able to afford it. I don’t want my face looking out of place,” Shaunta Wiltz, senior broadcast journalism major at the University of Texas at Arlington, admits. “Not only do I see myself potentially getting wrinkles in the future, but I have so many freck-les on my face. I hate them and as soon as I pay off my student loans, Botox will definitely be one of the first things that I look into.” While Wiltz maintained an open mind about corrections to her appearance in the future, Shornette Suell, sophomore edu-cation major at Stephen F. Austin in Nacodoches, TX, did not seem to be as interested. “The thought of Botox disgusts me. When I see the results of the procedure on people that get it on a regular basis, I’m just amazed as to why they would even want to do that to themselves,” said Suell says. “It seems so unnatural, and in some cases, it makes the face look as if it has a deformity. Why can’t we just take care of our faces without the usage of such harsh chemicals? Why can’t we be satis-fied with Neutrogena or Olay? These companies make products specifically designed to help with wrinkles, yet people want to go out and have chemicals injected into their faces that have twice as many side effects as the over-the-counter facial wash in Walmart. I just don’t get it”. Suell expresses her fear

of having something accidentally punctured and causing long term effects of the procedure. “To me, there are just too many risks. I’ve heard terrible ru-mors ranging from people having allergic reactions to the injection and it affecting the way that they breathe, to the dermatologist making the mistake of injecting the fluid into the wrong muscle and causing someone to go blind. It’s not worth it and no amount of money could ever compensate for what I lost could lose while trying to get Botox,” said Suell. Vyanna Carroll, sopho-more journalism major at the University of Houston, has mixed emotions about Botox. “I’m probably as neutral as they come on the issue of Bo-tox. I could be with it or I could be without it,” Carroll says. “I com-pletely understand why women go the extra mile and invest in Botox injections because that’s exactly what it is: an investment. I think those women are trying to nurture their skin so that it can look younger when they get older and I don’t blame them. However, natural is beautiful and when you let nature take its course, it’s one of the most amazing things.” Carroll emphasizes the impor-tance of embracing the tolls that nature takes on our bodies and adapting accordingly. “Unless I start to look abnormal, I have no intentions of utilizing Botox injections. I want to envision each and every wrinkle on my face as a represen-tation of wisdom and another year that God has blessed me to live. I don’t knock the women that use it but my personal advice would be

not to use it unless it is absolutely necessary,” Carroll says. If you’re interested in Bo-tox, it is essential you do does the proper research in terms of finding a certified and accredited dermatol-ogist capable of recommending and performing the Botox procedure that fits your personal needs. Whether you’re a middle-aged woman achieving the facial clarity of a twenty-something, or a 21-year-old preventing 40-year-old wrinkles, Botox may or may not be the procedure for you. Before you act, weigh your options and make a decision accordingly. ■

“Not only do I see myself potentially getting wrinkles in the future, but I have so many freckles on my face. I hate them and as soon as I pay off my student loans, Botox will definitely be one of the first things that I look into,” says Shauna Wiltz (above).

The 411 on BotoxWhat is it: BoToX cosmetic is a non-surgical, physician-administered aesthetic treatment for moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people ages 18 to 65. How much do injections cost: Anywhere from $300 to $1000 depending on various factors. How often do you need injections: Within days there can be evident improvement that can last up to 4 months. You receive injections as needed. Advantage: Botox gets rid of those eyebrow lines, pesky “crow’s feet,” and every wrinkle in between. disadvantage: It doesn’t last. After about four to six months your wrinkles will be back. For some, Botox prevents them from raising their eyebrows or even squinting. Please make sure that you have done your research on the doctor before you allow your treatments to be done.

horoscope

From horoscope.com

AriesMarch 21-April 19Many Aries people will be celebrating their birthdays this month and so this already excitable sign will be even more full of life this month! However, you need to make sure that this love of life does not spill over into a selfish attitude. A promise needs to be honored this month.

TAurusApril 20-May 20If you are in doubt about the reliability of a friend early in the month you should listen to your instincts and act accord-ingly. Your intuition is fully switched on right now and this will help with a delicate matter concerning a colleague or school friend. Money receives a boost at the end of the month.

GeminiMay 21-June 20Sometimes you can find it hard to be a team player as you like to follow your own ideas through to their conclu-sion. Success this months de-pends on you being willing to take a back seat. Financially, this is a good month, but you need to wait to see the cash in your hands.

CAnCerJune 21-July 22As a sign that is ruled by the Moon you respond strongly to the influence of those around you. Praise from an unex-pected quarter will encourage you to reassess your life goals with positive results. However, don’t make any snap deci-sions as you need to be sure before you change direction.

LeoJuly 23-August 22If at all possible you should take a break this month. You have been working extremely hard and although you have the enthusiasm you no longer have the energy reserves to keep up this level of effort. Single Leos will find love in the middle of the month at a leisure activity.

VirGoAugust 23-September 22The influence of your ruling planet, Mercury, this month means that your communica-tion skills are at their height. You should use this opportu-

nity to straighten out any misunderstandings within your friendship group. Fi-nancially, beware risk taking after the 20th.

LibrASeptember 23-October 22You are ruled by the planet Venus and this will be a very active planet in your life this month as it boosts the importance of friendship in your life. Sharing your prob-lems with others will help and on the work front a goal can be achieved by building the right team

sCorpioOctober 23-November 21This is the best month of the whole year for you to make significant progress in your career or at school. You are in a very efficient mood and your natural discipline is strong now. Explain your lack of socia-bility to friends or they may begin to worry about your relationship to them.

sAGiTTAriusNovember 22-December 21Your natural approach to problems is to try and defeat them through simple optimistic energy. However, this month you will be faced with some issues that require a more subtle approach. A loved one will give you advice and you need to make sure that

you show your apprecia-tion.

CApriCornDecember 22-January 19It’s not often that your artistic side is stimulated, but this month you will be feeling inclined to express your creativity. This will also act as a boost to your love life as a new and exciting side to your per-sonality is revealed. It’s a great month for going out to be entertained.

AquAriusJanuary 20-February 18This is your month to shine so be sure that you make the most of it. Not only will you be feeling glamorous when it comes to social events, but you will also be able to attract supporters at work or school. If that weren’t enough your finances are also looking increasingly strong!

pisCesFebruary 19-March 20Even though your heart is elsewhere now it is important that you focus on money making oppor-tunities this month. April brings a great deal of promise in terms of busi-ness possibilities. There may be difficulties on the home front, but these can be solved through compromise.

april warns you, aries: remember to keep your promises and don’t let your happiness turn into self-absorption
