Acadelnic Dr~ The origin of the gowns, hoods and caps worn by academics on fonnal occasions can be traced back to medieval times; they have been in use, with few modifications, in the ancient European universities since the fourteenth century. In most United States institutions the wearing of academic dress is of comparatively recent origin. It was not until a meeting held at Columbia University in 1895 that the first steps were taken to regularize de.sign and to set standards of consistency. One of the codes established has had to do with the colors of hoods. In general, the line of the hood denotes the University awarding the degree; more than one color is shown by the division of the field color in a variety of ways, such as chevrons. The color of the binding or edging of the hood indicates the field of study, these being uniform for almost all institutions. The following are the most common: Maize - Agriculture; White - Arts, Letters, Humanities; Light Blue - Education; Orange -Engineering; Purple - Law; Green - Medicine; Dark Blue - Philosophy; and Golden Yellow - Science.
