Edinburgh
• It is the second biggest city in Scotland after Glasgow.
• It has 477.660 inhabitants, an area of 259 km2 and a population density of 1844 inhabitants per km2 (2009).
• It is located 68 km from Glasgow, Scotland's capital
Areas of the city of Edinburgh
• The historic center of Edinburgh is divided into two areas by the Princes Street Gardens. To the south is the Edinburgh Castle.
• To the west of the castle is probably the most captivating building with its large circular shape made of sandstone, is the International Conference Centre, Edinburgh.
OLD AND NEW TOWN
The Old Town and the New Town of Edinburgh were declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1995.
OLD TOWN
• Old Town has retained its medieval structure. You can find great places that mark important places like the Cathedral of Saint Giles and the courts. Other notable landmarks include the Royal Museum of Scotland, Surgeons' Hall, Edinburgh University, and numerous underground streets, which are relics of ancient construction classes.
NEW TOWN
• New Town was the solution to the overpopulation of Old Town in the eighteenth century. The city had become too compact.
• In 1766 a competition to design the New Town, which won James Craig, an architect of 22 years old.

• The people of Edinburgh often say that you can see all four seasons in one day. As most of Scotland, Edinburgh has a temperate maritime climate, which is calm considering its northerly latitude.
