TOKYO � Japanese supplier Jatco isopening a new transmission plant inChina as part of a push to boost globaloutput of continuously variable trans-missions (CVTs) by 25 percent by 2011.

The factory in Guangzhou will open

in the spring and make 140,000 CVTsa year. Jatco is investing 6 billion yen(about ¤39.6 million) in the facility,spokesman Kazunori Shibuya said.

The company is aiming to boostglobal CVT production from 1.6 mil-lion units today to 2 million units inthe fiscal year ending March 31, 2011,he said.

Without being more specific,Shibuya said the company would in-vest billions of yen (tens of millionsof euros) in existing domestic plantsto improve production lines.

Jatco is expanding to meet growingdemand for CVTs, especially fromJapanese automakers. CVTs typicallyoffer a 10 percent improvement infuel economy compared with con-ventional automatic transmissions.In Europe, many European automak-ers are choosing dual-clutch trans-missions over CVTs to improve fueleconomy in new models. Dual-clutchtransmissions also provide a fuel sav-ings of about 10 percent.

In the fiscal year ending March 31,2005, CVT production accounted for

only 11 percent of the company’ssales. It rose to 39 percent in the fis-cal year ending March 31, 2008. Jat-co’s CVT production has risen nearlythreefold since April 2006.

The Chinese plant will be Jatco’ssecond overseas production site, af-ter Mexico.

Nissan Motor owns a 75 percentstake in Jatco, while Mitsubishi Mo-tors holds 15 percent and Suzuki Mo-tor has 10 percent. The company sup-plies all the CVTs used by Nissan andstarted sales to Chrysler in 2005. ANE
