ntroductionWith financial support from the Government of Japan,

the IMF Institute administers a scholarship program, theJapan-IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studies. The aim of the program is to train Asian nationals asapplied economists, to work either at the IMF or in theirhome administrations. Students in the program are expect-ed to study macroeconomics or a related subject throughthe Ph.D. level at one of the leading universities in theUnited States, Canada and Australia, whose EconomicsDepartment is strong in macroeconomics. Candidates haveto list the universities to which they have applied. Theyhave to show that they have been admitted to one of theseuniversities in order to receive financing. Please note thatthe number of scholarships available under this program islimited and the competition is expected to be strong.

he ProgramA Ph.D. from an American, Canadian or Australian uni-

versity normally requires four or five years of study.Students are expected to complete the majority of thecourse work in the first two years with the remainder of thetime devoted to researching and writing a dissertation. To maintain the scholarship, students will be expected tomaintain a high academic record in their course work.

Those selected for the scholarship program will attend ashort orientation at the IMF in Washington, D.C., wherethe students will familiarize themselves with the IMF andmeet with staff including recent Ph.D. graduates. At theconclusion of the third year of studies, students will returnto Washington for an internship at the IMF. Throughouttheir studies, students will be expected to stay in touchwith the IMF. Upon completion of their studies they will beexpected to apply for employment at the IMF. It is expectedthat students will complete the degree program before theirthirty-third birthday.

The IMF requests that the selected scholarship recipientcertify that he/she is in good health and free from any pre-existing medical condition or physical handicap that couldimpair the completion of their studies or their potentialemployment at the IMF (e.g., limitations on ability to travel).

hat will the Scholarship cover?

Scholarships awarded under this program will includeone round-trip airfare, tuition and related student feesincluding medical insurance, books, and living allowancesfor two years. Students will be expected to secure another

source of funding after two years. (American, Canadian orAustralian universities can often help their students findthese sources of funding. In addition, some students may beoffered teaching assignments at the university to supporttheir studies.) The scholarship will not cover any expensesfor the student's family nor any expenses related to theirattendance at conferences, seminars, or workshops, etc.

dmissions InformationThe deadline for receipt of application materials is

December 31, 2001 with award notifications sent in March2002. Scholarships are awarded by the IMF Institute inconsultation with the Government of Japan. The followingmust be provided, in English, for your application to beconsidered:

1. A completed application form.2. A statement on a single page, not to exceed 250 words,of the factors that you think make your application deserv-ing of particular consideration. This statement couldinclude career goals, why you would be interested in work-ing as an economist at the IMF, research proposals andfields of particular interest, and academic awards or honorsthat you have received.3. If you are already a graduate student, a transcript fromyour current university. If you are not yet a graduate stu-dent, a transcript from the last university you attended.4. GRE and TOEFL/IELTS scores.5. A copy of one of your applications to an American,Canadian or Australian university.
