Dahlia Tree Folk Art Painting, designed by Elaine Moran. (continued)

• Supplies:• 140lb cold pressed watercolor paper. • Sakura Pigma Graphic Archival 1.0mm (fine) Sepia color. PWP has 12 sepia pens for sale,

approx. $2.20 each. Please let me know if you want to purchase one. • Derwent Inktense Pencils: Sienna Gold 0240, Chili Red, 0500, Felt Green 1530, Willow

1900, Green Aquamarine. • Round watercolor or acrylic brushes small and medium sized brushes. • Paper towels, Elaine prefers the blue shop towels since they don’t leave fibers behind• water container.

Watercolor paper needs to be prepped prior to class per the following instructions. You can start by watching Erika Joanne’s YouTube video which demonstrates how to create her vin-tage paper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INh_LpqGkIE&t=17s. You will need Raw Sienna Acrylic paint, small sponge, 1” or larger flat brush (acrylic) and bowl of clean water.

Lay the paper on a water protected surface such as a tray or old vinyl tablecloth. (Things will get messy!) Using a sponge soaked in clean water, thoroughly wet the surface of the paper. Using the brush, apply a medium wash of Raw Sienna acrylic paint to the entire surface in a random slip/slap fashion. (The color should not be consistently applied – you want it to look “splotchy” and uneven.) Deepen the color here and there with more paint. Dip your fingers in a bowl of clean water and flick large droplets over the paper in a random fashion. Wait a minute or so… Then lift the paper into a vertical position and let the water run down the paper onto the protected surface. Lay flat and pat up the water and excess paint with a clean folded paper towel. (Note: It is supposed to look “splotchy”.) The color will lighten somewhat as it dries. Let the paper dry completely. If the paper is warped after it is dry, you may want to flatten it between some heavy books. Use gray graphite paper to lightly transfer the design using a small stylus or a sharp pencil or pen.

Bring your own lunch and beverages.

RSVP by January 17th to Barb Lehman 717-795-9845 or email [email protected]

At the November meeting, we had a brief conversation about a location for 2018 meetings/programs. Please let me know if you have any suggestions of a place we could meet. Remember, we need handicap rest rooms, a parking lot and storage. Our January meeting will be at the Sertoma Club in Carlisle, PA. Lastly, this is OUR chapter and we need your help! Several committees have openings and we would love for you to join one or two. Linda Kapp

MEMORY BOX PAINT-INSATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2018, 9 AM-4 PM

THE CARLISLE AREA SERTOMA CLUB, 311 E. NORTH ST, CARLISLE, PA The Memory Box program allows artists to use their creativity to benefit others by creating hand-crafted Memory Boxes to be given by hospital bereavement counselors and nurses to the families of newborn infants who die in the hospital or are stillborn. Penns Woods Painters through the Memory Box Program has adopted Geisinger Holy Spirit, UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg Hos-pital, and PennState Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. In 2017, we provided 63 Memory Boxes to these hospitals. We also shipped 60 boxes to hospitals as-signed to us from memoryboxes.org. We currently have 40 painted boxes.

Please find it in your heart to help us aid these families by participating in this year’s Memory Box Paint-In scheduled for Saturday, February 17. In the morning, Judy Vetock will teach “Bluebird and Peach Blossoms” designed by Dorothy Whisenhunt (with permission). The peach blossoms will be changed to berries to save time. In the afternoon, Carol Henry will teach “Ahoy” designed by Jamie Mills-Price (with permission). Jamie’s original design is painted with daisies (in front in picture). I painted the sail in dif-ferent styles to make it more appropriate for boys, which has been requested by UPMC Pinnacle. I painted one with just leaves, zentangled one, and used stencils on one. You could even letter or stencil words such as “Ahoy,” “Sand,” “Sail, or “Surf” on it. I hope you will be creative with the design of the sail and make it your own.

Boxes, prep instructions, and the pattern for Judy’s proj-ect will be available at the January 20 meeting. The chapter is providing a set of paints, but please bring the paints you already have. Please sign-up at the meeting, so we have an idea of how many members will attend. If you can’t attend the January 20th meeting and still want to participate in the Memory Box Paint-In, please RSVP to [email protected] by February 12, and you will be emailed the prep instructions and pattern for Judy’s project. We will bring a limited supply of boxes with the lids basecoated for those not able to basecoat them prior to the Paint-In. Please bring your lunch and your own beverages for the day. I will be bring chili and cornbread muffins to share, and Judy will bring a dessert. Let’s make it a fun painting day for a good cause!!

I always wanted to paint, but never had the opportunity or time to indulge myself, while working and raising four children. I worked at home as tax collector for Middle Paxton Township for 12 years and as a rural mail carrier out of Dauphin Post Office for 15 years.

When the “Paint by Number” craze began, I jumped right in! By 1985, our barn was empty and I opened a gift shop featuring floral design with folk art on consignment. About that time, I discovered a shop that taught folk art and enlisted in classes there. Then within a few months, I found Joan Koser’s “Self-Expressions” in Palmyra and enrolled there and the rest is history. Joan taught a goodly number of us here in this chapter and it is a tribute to her how far we’ve gone. We’ve had several CDA’s and a third MDA achievement in PWP, all girls that studied with Joan Koser.

Once my shop opened, I began teaching and continued for several years on a regular basis. But when my husband passed away, I closed the shop, having lost interest in a lot of things.Continuing to paint, though, I secured a booth at the Old

Sledworks in Duncannon and more recently at South Church Antiques & Crafts in Elizabethville.

In between all this, however, I have attended several national conventions and quite a few HOOT get-togethers and participated in classes taught by “big brushes”.

Also, I’ve done a host of craft shows including the “Christmas Show “at the Farm Show Building for several years, until it got too expensive.

Having four of my pieces published has been a thrill, I must say. I guess I’ll always paint until I’m too old to see the brush (Ha) but have the creativity and relaxation that comes with it.

• Lois Eckert informed the members that she keeps receiving calls about house painting because her phone number is associated with PWP on internet searches. It’s possible, but the Internet has years’ worth of information that does not go away.

• Betty Lou Zimmerman painted a Ros Stallcup design on a side table. She also brought blank note cards that she had made of her artwork so that she could sell them at her craft shows.

Penn’s Woods Painters

Board Meeting Minutes

October 11, 2017

Carlisle Sertoma Club

Attendance: Linda Kapp, Barb Lehman, Melissa Crowther, Joyce Gutierrez, Lois Eckert, Doris Kohler, Jane Allen, Bobbi Brady, and Betty Lou Zimmerman

Linda Kapp called the meeting to order at 6:10pm

President: Linda Kapp welcomed and thanked everyone to the meeting.

Secretary: Melissa Crowther – the August board meeting minutes and the September general member meeting minutes were sent via email for review and approval. Several corrections were made. Barb Lehman made a motion to approve and print all corrected minutes in the November/December newsletter. Lois Eckert seconded the motion and the motion carried.

VP Programs: Barb Lehman – November program is our annual Christmas ornament exchange. In January, Elaine Moran will be teaching us how to use Inktense pencils with an original PA Dutch design. In May, a lady from Brandywine Decorative Painters will be teaching. In July, Jeannine Lewis will be showing us how to frame. In Nov, we will be exchanging Christmas ornaments or painting another Christmas related project. We still need programs for March and September. Several ideas were suggested, such as Joyce Gutierrez teaching/demonstrating the marble paint technique by Nilda Rose Rodriguez.

VP Membership: Doris Kohler – there are 10 renewals for 2018. We had 42 members in 2017. 2 new members have joined us recently: Melissa Favor (Kennett Square PA) and Kathleen Weiss (from VA Beach).

Treasurer: Dee DeLorenzo – there were 2 expenses for Joyce Gutierrez and Andy DePalma. Our income was $23.50 from the 50/50 raffle at the September meeting, $60 member dues, and $98 from the September Messiah art sale. Ending balance is approx. $9,400. Dee was unable to provide a full report because her computer is in the shop.

Committee Reports

Memory Box: Carol Henry was absent, and report given by Linda Kapp. – Dottie Shultz delivered 18 boxes to Pinnacle Health Hospital on September 21. In our inventory, we have 39 painted boxes and 100 unpainted. 63 boxes have been delivered to local hospitals and 48 have been sent to other hospitals via Memory Box Org.

Hospitality: Jeannine Lewis was absent. No report given.

Treasure Box: Linda Fleming was absent. No report given.

20

Paint-Ins: Melissa Crowther – Judy Vetock will be teaching “Little Jack” on Oct 14. There are 13 students signed up. Extra Jo Sonja paints were purchased by Judy Vetock and Linda Kapp; donations are preferred. As of this meeting, there were no submissions for 2018 Paint-Ins and the deadline is November 1st.

Ways and Means: Lois Eckert – today she brought a tub full of leftover Christmas ornaments and boxes that are from the 2008 fundraiser sale. Some of the boxes were taken out of the stash to be used for Memory Boxes and placed in club storage. A discussion was held about possibly donating the ornaments, but that’s to be determined. Our chapter should really do a fundraiser in 2018. Suggestions were to do a craft sale, and possibly raffle baskets (but Small Games of Chance license would need to be renewed).

Seminars: Joyce Gutierrez – Lynne Andrews will be teaching on Oct 21-22. Students signed up: 12 on Saturday and 13 on Sunday. Potluck meals will be both days with Hoagies on Saturday and Meatball subs on Sunday. Also, the Santa wood piece was made by Andy De Palma, but Joyce has decided to no longer use him because he took too long.

2018 seminars: April 20-22 Sandy McTier and July 20-22 Brenda Stewart

Webmaster/Publicity: Carol Henry was absent; report given by Linda Kapp. – the website and Facebook are up to date. An ad was placed in The Guide for the Lynne Andrews seminar. This position will need to be filled for 2018.

Newsletter: Jane Allen – articles are due on 10/22 to Jane A, Linda K, and Carol H.

Tea and Art Show: Bobbi Brady – the event is October 29 from 2-4pm at Messiah Community Room. There are 21 attendees signed up with 4 guests. We are planning for 30.

Nominating: Bobbi Brady – Nothing has changed since September meeting

Old/New Business

Linda Kapp announced that our PO Box is closed as of September 30. Please send mail to her address.

Linda Kapp received an email from Mary Lank, which announced that she will not be a member in 2018 due to personal commitments. Mary is our past president, so she cannot be used in Tied votes next year.

Linda Kapp – Elaine Moran will be writing an article about herself/hobbies for the November newsletter. Pat Meyers will be writing for the January newsletter.

By Laws and Standing Rules corrections: Linda Kapp has made updates and needs discussion and corrections before approval by the board.

1. Linda K – By Laws Article VI: 1 – The elected officers of this chapter shall be President, Vice President of Programs, Vice President of Membership, Secretary, and Treasurer, or alternatively two Co-Presidents, two Co-Vice Presidents of Programs and two Co-Secretaries. This wording was approved by the Board on 10/11/17.

2. Linda K – Standing Rules #6 – Guests may visit this chapter anytime with meeting fees payable to the chapter. – a discussion was held about how to gain guests as members.

21

In the end it was determined to completely delete from standing rules. Dee DeLorenzo made the motion to delete #6 from the standing rules. Motion carried.

3. Bobbi Brady – in By Laws Article IV: 2 -Dues – does not correspond with Standing Rules #1. The By Laws state Membership dues shall be paid annually on a calendar basis. Dues for the ensuing calendar year are payable October 1 through December 31. New membership privileges are effective October 1 with exception of voting or running for office which shall begin January 1. The Standing Rules #1 state that Membership shall be $20 per year and shall be payable to correspond with payment of dues of the Society. The board decided to delete the crossed-out part of the standing rules.

4. Bobbi Brady – In By Laws Article VI: 3: D – this needs to be updated to reflect that the Board has decided in 2017 that all meeting minutes be printed in the newsletter, which is then sent to SDP for record.

5. Bobbi Brady – Standing Rules #10 Seminars section J – states Seminars are open to the public, PWP members and MASCC affiliated chapter members pay member rates. MASCC is no longer an organization and will be deleted from the rule. Also, section i in this rule states Non-Member rates will be $10 higher per day than member rates. Joyce Gutierrez made a motion to revise this rule to Non-member rates will be higher than member rates. Motion carried.

Announcements

Linda Kapp – next Board Meeting is December 13 at 6pm. There will not be any Open Painting that day. The meeting location is to be determined as we might go out for dinner.

Bobbi Brady made the motion to adjourn the meeting and was seconded by Doris Kohler. Motion carried.

Meeting adjourned at 7:45pm

Respectfully submitted by,

Melissa Crowther
