ON ONE FOOT

TBE’s Big Tent

One of my favorite quotes was written by the poet Edwin Markham, in 1943:

He drew a circle that shut me out — Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout. But Love and I had the wit to win: We drew a circle that took him in.

Our congregation has long been known for our spirit of inclusivity. But, while “a good reputation is like precious oil” as Ecclesiastes says, we can never rest on our laurels. For one thing, newcomers to our area might not have gotten wind of our warmth; for another, there are many options out there – including the most popular option of all, which is not to affiliate with any synagogue. Additionally, we are a Conservative congregation, and historically our movement has not cultivated the best reputation for inclusivity. While that reputation is not entirely deserved, the brand is a burden to our efforts to show people how welcoming we are. This is especially true with interfaith families. It is one thing to profess that we are welcoming; it is quite another thing to demonstrate it. We’ve done that over the years – and we have always had a significant number of active interfaith families, but as we begin 2016, we’re ramping up our efforts to reach out and draw people in. It’s called “Keruv,” which literally means “bring closer,” and we are now placing keruv at the highest level of our strategic agenda. Let me be clear, there is no hidden agenda to this strategic agenda. When I say “bring closer,” it means to accept people as they are, not with the intent of encouraging conversion. I am happy to work with anyone who wishes to deepen their connection with Judaism (Indeed, I encourage everyone to deepen those attachments.); but welcoming a non Jew to our congregation must be done with no strings attached. If we don’t reach out more to interfaith families, then we are turning aside approximately half of the Jewish children being born to the millennial generation. We cannot afford to do that. The Jewish world has become infinitely more complicated over the past generation. But despite those complications, a recent survey indicates that the vast majority of children from interfaith homes are identifying as Jews by the time they are young adults. Over the years, our ritual leadership has addressed keruv in a number of constructive ways. Nearly two decades ago, we were already fully involving non-Jewish bar mitzvah parents in their child’s service, long before most other Conservative congregations even invited them to the bima. Our ritual committee is now exploring how to be more inclusive with ark openings. While there will always be boundaries that are drawn in ritual, we want to send unmistakable signals of inclusivity to interfaith families A little known change that we implemented several years back was to have special blessings for interfaith couples about

THE HAZZAN’S VOICE

My dear friend, confidante, vocal coach and a significant influence to the cultural growth and religious services at Temple Beth El passed on at age 94 on September 11, 2015. Cantor Dr. Raymond Smolover had an extraordinary career as a leading cantor in the Reform Movement, as well as the Executive Director of the Reform cantorate, as well as being a progressive clergyman dedicated to interfaith collaboration and a world-class operatic tenor; he was offered a contract with the Metropolitan Opera Company. He was also recognized as a talented composer, librettist, teacher, author and scholar. In 1971, Cantor Smolover and his instrumental group, from Congregation Kol Ami in White Plains, appeared as the second half of my first Annual Cantor’s Concert in performing his first folk-rock Friday night service, “Edge of Freedom.” Selections from this service became part of our Junior Choir repertoire, such as the V’ahavta (“You shall love the Lord your G-d,” and especially, the Friday night candle blessing “Come let us welcome the Sabbath”). In 1976, to celebrate the centennial here in America, we presented in concert Cantor Smolover’s “Where the Rainbow Ends,” an interfaith folk-rock cantata and ceremony. Our Adult Choir was augmented by members of the Westhill High School Chamber Choir. The instrumentation was provided by 18 instrumentalists from the University of Bridgeport. Being 1976, we presented this performance as the Jewish community’s gift to the community-at-large. I produced and rehearsed the ensembles and soloists and Cantor Smolover conducted the performance which included readings for the audience, which numbered 900. The 23rd Psalm, sung by our Adult Choir on Yom Kippur, was a selection from “Where the Rainbow Ends.” Years later, Temple Beth El was honored by the performance of Cantor Smolover’s opera, “Isaac Levi.” The singers, all cantors, also had extensive operatic experience. Every Friday morning I would drive to “Ray’s” home in Scarsdale for my weekly voice coaching. The first half of my 30-minute session was spent discussing Jewish music, then we concluded with “Ray” at the piano. I never knew who would be there preceding me or following me. Sometimes it would be Richard Kiley, Tony Randall or other singers or actors of note. As a leading teacher of voice in his New York studio, he taught a broad spectrum of opera, theater, recording artists and, of course, cantors. Cantor Smolover was actively engaged in voice research and education for seven decades. He published several books including, The Vocal Essence, Vocal Behavior Analysis and Modification, which began as his doctoral dissertation; and Sing Your Best: Seven Vocal Exercises that Really Work. This led to his receiving his doctoral degree (Ed.D) from Columbia University. For his research in the adolescent voice, he was able to have the cooperation of singers from the Harlem Boys’ Choir. Cantor Dr. Raymond Smolover celebrated his 90th birthday where he was honored at a Shabbat Shira service at Temple Sinai in Washington, D.C. Following the service he was personally congratulated by President Barak Obama, who asked Cantor Smolover what the secret was to his longevity. Cantor Smolover replied that he attributed it to three things, “A little luck, a lot of love and the wisdom to feel and express gratitude.” The Jewish music world mourns deeply the passing of Cantor

Dr. Raymond Smolover. His memory will live on as long as his books are read and his music performed. His influence will endure for generations for he was a true “mentsch”

with a mind that extended into the future. Hazzan Sidney Rabinowitz

With Rabbi Joshua Hammerman (No Fee)

Wednesdays 12:00-12:45pm - Resumes on January 20

The 150 religious poems that make up the Book of Psalms are

both strange and familiar, forming the backbone of the liturgy.

The metaphors are tangled, but the emotional states they

express are as immediate now as when they were written.

We will read, discuss and savor these texts as they have come

down through the centuries.

Bring your own lunch. We’ll provide the lively discussion!

SHULEM DEEN, FOOTSTEPS Guest Speaker

Friday, January 29 Kabbalat Shabbat at 7:30 p.m.

Shulem Deen, the former Skverer Hasid who for years blogged under the pseudonym “Hasidic Rebel,” has just published a memoir, “All Who Go Do Not Return” (Graywolf Press). Deen, now 40, describes his sheltered life in New Square, the virtually all-Hasidic village an hour north of New York City, and tells how he lost his faith and, ultimately, his five children.

Shulem Deen was raised to believe that questions are dangerous. As a member of the Skverers, one of the most insular Hasidic sects in the US, he knows little about the outside world — only that it is to be shunned. His marriage at eighteen is arranged and several children soon follow. Deen’s first transgression — turning on the radio — is small, but his curiosity leads him to the library, and later the Internet. Soon he begins a feverish inquiry into the tenets of his religious beliefs, until, several years later, his faith unravels entirely.

Now a heretic, he fears being discovered and ostracized from the only world he knows. His relationship with his family at stake, he is forced into a life of deception, and begins a long struggle to hold on to those he loves most: his five children. In All Who Go Do Not Return, Deen bravely traces his harrowing loss of faith, while offering an illuminating look at a highly secretive world.

JEWISH HERITAGE TOUR OF CENTRAL EUROPE

Over the years, people have inquired about our doing a Jewish heritage tour of central Europe, geared to adults and mature teens. I’ve been laying the groundwork with a tour company for such a trip and now want to gauge the degree of interest. The ideal date for this trip would be the latter part of this coming July, 2016. Other dates could be considered. The trip, lasting approximately two weeks, would be led by Mara and myself. Accommodations would be 4-5 star, with kosher food available. The proposed itinerary would include Berlin, Warsaw, Lublin, Krakow, Budapest, Vienna and Prague, with the travelling between cities done by tour bus. Stops would include major Holocaust sites such as Auschwitz, Majdanek and Terezin, and the new Jewish museums in Berlin and Warsaw, as well as Oskar Schindler’s factory in Krakow. We would also see the renaissance of Jewish life in Germany and Hungary, the Europe’s oldest synagogue in Prague and major historic sites like Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenberg Gate. Land cost would be in the ballpark of $4,000-4,500 per person, double occupancy. Please let me know ASAP ([email protected]) whether you have interest in such a trip for this summer, and if you do, how many people would be coming with you. Also let me know if you would be interested but can’t go this July.

CONTRIBUTING SHARES OF STOCK TO TEMPLE BETH EL

One way to boost your charitable contributions to Temple Beth El is to give shares of appreciated stock instead of cash. You do not pay any tax on your capital gain, and your charitable deduction is the shares’ entire fair market value.

Several Beth El members contribute shares of stock to satisfy their dues pledge, their annual fund pledge, and other contributions to the Temple.

After consulting your tax advisor, please contact the TBE office at 203-322-6901.

to be married. We want those couples to know that their TBE family embraces them fully as they embark on their chosen path together. When I hear that one of our young adults is going to be married, I typically try to reach out, regardless of the spouse’s religion. Young adults who have grown up here know, I hope, that our love for them is unconditional. They need to know that I am there for them at all times, in sickness or in health. Sadly, that message is not always clear to them, in part because I am not able to perform interfaith weddings. Sadly, as well, some of the parents of interfaith couples, including long time TBE members, feel some awkwardness about discussing these matters. As they become grandparents, sometimes that awkwardness increases. It is time for that to end. As one of the first fruits of our keruv initiative, we are hoping to offer grandparents (along with others) the chance to share ways to enrich the Seder for multi-faith families. If you are interested in helping us to expand our outreach to interfaith families, please let me know. And if you know of any family in our area (especially though not exclusively those who grew up here) who could benefit from a welcoming call

from me, please let me know that as well. There is too much at stake here, nothing less than the future of the Jewish people.

Rabbi Joshua Hammerman
