Despite David’s prominence and fame, many aspects of his life and reign, and many of the personalities who revolved around his life, are far from well-known and fascinating in and of themselves. From the Rabbi’s Desk

Think about Jewish learning with the rabbi and friends in the comfort of your own home during and after a casual dinner. We have already had one such dinner discussion on the topic of the life of King David (see ALL the topics below), at the home of the Temple president with some friends and family, and I think everyone really enjoyed it. Despite David’s prominence and fame, many aspects of his life and reign, and many of the personalities who revolved around his life, are far from well-known and fascinating in and of themselves. From the lively conversation that ensued it was apparent that everyone present found the environment and the engagement in Jewish learning on a mature, adult level, stimulating and challenging. I would like to interest as many members of Temple Beth Torah as possible in taking part in what I think will be an exciting program, whose name I am borrowing from my Champaign congregation—“Take Out Judaism”. My offer to each of you is that you pick a date, some friends (6, 8 or as many as you feel comfortable with) to

invite for dinner, and a topic for discussion from the list I provide for you below, and then we will have a date for socializing over food and studying an exciting Jewish topic.

Here are the topics I suggest, based on a series of books by well-known Jewish authors like Elie Wiesel, Harold Kushner or David Mamet) issued by Nextbook Press [which are all available if you wish to purchase them in advance, though reading the book will not required, for my presentation and the discussion which ensues will be sufficient unto itself]: Abraham Cahan (Yiddish journalist and fiction writer); Sholem Aleichem (Yiddish writer); The Book of Job: When Bad Things Happen to a Good Person; When General Grant Expelled the Jews; Sacred Trash: The Lost and Found World of the Cairo Geniza; The Eichman Trial; Burnt Books: Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav and Franz Kafka; Hillel: If Not Now, When?; Yehuda Halevi (medieval poet and philosopher); Jewish Songwriters/American Songs; The Wicked Son (David Mamet on Self-hating Jews); Rashi (medieval Jewish commentator); Barney Ross (American boxer); The Jewish Body; Resurrecting Hebrew; Benjamin Disraeli (novelist and British Prime Minister of Jewish descent); King David, Maimonides (medieval philosopher); Jews and Power; Marc Chagall (20th c. Jewish artist); Emma Lazarus. Just pick a topic and give me a couple of weeks advance notice so I can review my notes (and get my copy of the book).

The way to arrange “Take Out Judaism” at your home is just to give me a call or drop me an email, so we can set up a date that is mutually agreeable. Help me actualize that which I tell every one of our Bar and Bat Mitzvah students—Jewish learning is a lifelong process. Make a New Year’s resolution and come learn with me and your friends during the secular New Year 2014!

I recently had a wonderful experience that I am happy to have an opportunity to share with you. I was invited this past holiday season to take part in the Cardinal Newman High School Thanksgiving Inter-Faith Prayer Service. Usually, they invite Rabbi Pinsky, but he was on a cruise this year for Chanukah and I was delighted to be able to represent our Jewish clergy at this extraordinary event. When speaking with Peggy Skantar, the Campus Minister, I was told that they had never had a Cantor as part of the program before and, although the other clergy persons would be speaking or delivering prayers, I thought it would be interesting for the students to be exposed to some of the music of our liturgy. Knowing we were celebrating Thanksgiving, I figured that the most appropriate blessing to share would be Shehecheyanu which states, “Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the Universe, for giving us life, sustaining us, and enabling us to reach this season.” Could any prayer be more appropriate when intending to give thanks? I decided I would explain the prayer to the students, sing a simple version of it, a

more folk version (the one we are used to hearing at services), and then a more modern interpretation of the words. Beth Schafer, Cantorial soloist and very talented songwriter, wrote a song based on the text of Shehecheyanu called “A Way to Say Ah.” Her song lyrics remind us to take time during our daily lives to recognize the beauty, spirituality and true miracles that are always around us and to thank God we are alive.

So I brought my guitar, processed into the gymnasium of the high school with the Reverends and Deacons, not really knowing what to expect. I was warmed by the sincerity of their words and I was struck by the similarity of their messages.

When I got up to make my presentation, the kids weren’t sure about me either. They listened politely about the Shehecheyanu. They fidgeted a bit on the risers. I introduced “A Way to Say Ah.” Telling them how easy the words were… “Ah, Mmm, Oh.” I heard an “Uh oh” from the minister behind me when the kids started to giggle. It is high school, after all. Then I began the song. By the second chorus the kids were clapping and by the third chorus they were singing along. The energy in the room changed. Hundreds of young adults joining me in words of thanks to God. It didn’t matter that I was Jewish. The message is universal and we could all feel it.

At the end of the program, I received two unexpected gifts. The students had collected food and gift cards for needy families and the student council president presented a huge basket to each of the members of the clergy to bring back to our congregations so that families who may not have, would be able to enjoy a delicious Thanksgiving meal. The second gift came from Reverend Carr, the President of Cardinal Newman. In his closing remarks, he thanked me and quoted the song I had shared, stating that he would always remember the very appropriate and immortal words, “Ah, Mmm, Oh.”

After the program, I received so many compliments from both staff members and students as well as an invitation to return next year. My heart was full of gratitude and joy, my trunk was full of food for a beloved congregant. Rarely have I entered a Thanksgiving feeling so blessed.

I hope that your holiday season has brought joy to your family, that the lights of the Chanukiah glowed bright in your homes and hearts, and that this secular New Year brings you blessings abound.

From  the  Preschool

The  past  few  months  in  the  preschool  have  been  busy  ones.    Our  days  have  been  filled  with  every  day  ac<vi<es   that   grow   curious   minds   and   develop   skills   while   providing   the   backdrop   for   teaching   the  many  Jewish  Values   that   are   intricately  woven   into  our   curriculum.   The   lessons  of   Tzedakah,   Feeding   the  Hungry    (Ma’  achil  Re’ayvim  ),  and  Honoring  the  Elderly  (Hiddur  P’nay-‐Zakayn)  took  center  stage  in  the  programming  at  the  school.  In  the  community,  the  children  and  their  families  donated  non-‐perishable  food  for  our  school-‐wide  food  drive,  Chanukah  giNs   for  the  Alpert   Jewish  Family  and  Children’s  Service,  and  gently  used  costumes  to  send   to   families   in   Israel   for   Purim.   In   the   classrooms,   children,   parents   and   teachers   worked   together   to  decorate  costumes,  to  prac<ce  songs  and  even  to  cook  for  our  school-‐wide  Chanukah/Thanksgiving  Feast.  One  of   the  most  profound   lessons  of    Honoring   the  Elderly   (Hiddur  P’nay-‐Zakayn)  was   learned  at   the  Morselife  Geriatric  Center,  where  last  month  the  PreK  classes  sang  Thanksgiving  and  Chanukah  songs  and  then  handed  out  the  cards  that  they  lovingly  made  for  the  residents.

The  next  day  I  received  an  email  from  the    from  the  director  of  the  center  which  read:  “My  resident  and  her   husband   came  back   to  Morse   crying   telling  me  what   a   great  6me   they  had   talking   to   all   of   the  children.”  I  tear  up  every  <me  I  see  and  hear  our  preschoolers  sing  the  Chanukah  blessings.  The  connec<on  to  our  tradi<ons  provides  that  lifelong  iden<ty  that  will  last  their  whole  lives.

Crea<ve  costume  design  this  year  incorporated  both  the  Chanukah  and  Thanksgiving  symbolism.    For  Chanukah,  the  children  were  treated  to   latkes  and  applesauce  by  the  Brotherhood  in  collabora<on  with  the  Volunteer  Parent  Organiza<on  and  also  received  giNs  dreidels  and  gelt  from  the  Temple  Sisterhood.

We  will  begin   the  secular  New  Year  with  an  extension  of   the  earlier   lessons  of  Gemilut  Chasadeem  (Acts   of   Lovingkindness).     There  will   be     planned   ac<vi<es   for   the   children   including   Tza’ar   Baalay   Chayim  (Compassion  to  animals)  and  Hachnasat  Orchim  (Welcoming  Guests).    Fresh  from  winter  break,  the  children  will  greet,  “Mazel”  a  beau<ful  life  size  prop  from  the  book,  the  Shabbat  Puppy,  by  Leslie  Kimmelman.    “Mazel”  is  part  of  the  Traveling  Curriculum  received  from  the  Commission  for  Jewish  Educa<on.  Through  the  story  of  Mazel,  The  Shabbat  Puppy,  this  innova<ve  program  infuses  the  language,  adventures  and  Jewish  values  into  the  day-‐to-‐day  ac<vi<es  of  preschool  children.

Ready  for  some  Mitzvot  metaphors?

The  prac<ce  of  mitzvot  is  something  like  the  Law  of  Iner<a,  the  high  school  physics  rule  that  we  all  learned  to  recite  in  our  sleep:  An  object  in  mo,on  tends  to  stay  in  mo,on.    An  object  at  rest  tends  to  stay  at  rest.    We  learned  throughout  our  “science  as  a  requirement”  days  that  when  you  drop  a  ball  from  the  roof  of  a  building,  it  picks  up  speed  at  a  remarkable  pace.    And  it  takes  coming  into  contact  with  an  obstacle  of  tremendous  strength  and  power  (the  ground)  to  stop  its  momentum  (and  even  then,  a  rubber  ball  isn’t  going  to  let  a  hard  surface  stop  it.    It  just  bounces  right  back  and  con<nues  its  graceful  flight).

Such  is  the  incorpora<on  of  mitzvot  into  our  daily  lives.    It’s  hard  to  know  where  to  begin.    The  task  seems  daun<ng  and  overwhelming.    It’s  easy  to  use  this  trepida<on

as  an  excuse  to  remain  inert,  incapable  of  seeing  our  lives  as  different  or  more  fulfilling  than  they  are  now-‐  without  an  effort  so  tremendous  and  dispropor<onal  to  the  benefits  obtained  that  it  isn’t  really  worth  it  at  all.

But  learning  and  living  mitzvot  isn’t  about  taking  a  dive  head  first  into  freezing  deep  water,  never  having  had  the  luxury  of  swimming  lessons,  and  being  shocked  by  the  sudden  change  in  body  temperature.    Rather,  it’s  a  gradual  process  of  beginning  in  the  shallow  end  and  adjus<ng  to  the  climate-‐  learning  the  strokes  from  a  knowledgeable  and  confident  instructor  who  shares  the  wisdom  necessary  to  reach  toward  the  depths  of  understanding  and  fulfillment.

During  the  month  of  January  we,  as  a  congrega<on,  will  have  several  opportuni<es  to  dip  pour  toes  in  the  shallow  mitzvah  waters.    The  Religious  School  and  Preschool  students  will  have  an  opportunity  to  learn  about  the  mitzvah  “Tzar  Ba’alei  Chayim”,  the  mitzvah  of  taking  care  of  animals.    Each  year  the  Friedman  Commission  for  Jewish  Educa<on  and  PJ  Library  put  together  a  traveling  curriculum  that  visits  our  school.    This  year  the  curriculum  teaches  the  mitzvah  of  taking  care  of  animals  through  the  use  of  the  book,  The  Shabbat  Puppy.    We  will  have  a  collec<on  bin  for  supplies  for  Peggy  Adams  at  the  entrance  to  our  school  wing.    Please  take  a  look  at  the  flyer  included  in  the  Shalom  for  suggested  items  to  donate.

As  part  of  our  mul<ple  Mitzvah  Day  opportuni<es  this  year,  on  Sunday,  January  26th  from  1:00-‐4:00  pm,  our  congrega<on  will  sponsor  a  family  fun  day  in  3  different  parks  around  Wellington.    We  will  join  forces  with  the  Village  of  Wellington,  Safe  Neighborhoods  program  and  invite  local  neighborhood  kids  to  come  play  with  us  in  the  park.    For  more  informa<on,  see  the  flyer  in  the  Shalom  or  contact  Marcia  Weber  at  [email protected].

As  we  begin  this  journey  towards  doing  more  mitzvot,  we  find  that  the  momentum  of  incorpora<ng  mitzvot  into  our  lives  is  just  like  a  ball  thrown  off  the  roof.    A  linle  push  and  we  find  that  we  can  (and  want)  to  do  more  and  more.    With  greater  ease,  we  come  to  understand  that  the  effort  does  lead  to  a  reward  and  a  sense  of  accomplishment.    Mitzvah  Goreret  Mitzvah…one  mitzvah  does  lead  to  another,  and  being  righteous  is  good!

B’Shalom,    Jodi  Kaufman,  RJE

Dear Friends, !I want to begin with a great big "thank you" to the Shalom Task Force (Diane Marks, Jill Cohen, Marcia Weber and Sylvia Windmueller), congregants, supporters and advertisers who participated in bringing the Shalom back to a printed format! !I can hardly believe it's a new year! Last year was incredibly exciting - we celebrated Rabbi Pinsky's tenure at TBT and welcomed Rabbi Klein as Interim Rabbi, the Search Committee met many wonderful rabbinic candidates, we said thank you to Susan Kellner, Rich Lebowitz and Philip Levine who stepped down as officers of our Board of Trustees and welcomed Cheryl Cordes, Steven Warner and Jeff Sharkey as our new officers, we made improvements to our facility, and many more wonderful things. !Now, as we move into 2014, I hope everyone explores all the opportunities Temple Beth Torah has to offer; the chance to make new friendships, to enjoy beautiful spiritual services or a new education class, to have a good time at a social event, or participate in a social justice project, etc. !As you sort through this beautiful Shalom, please look at the calendar and read the flyers. Come join your fellow members - you will be enriched! !Happy New Year to all of you! Sara Marcus, President !

This is a recent article I wrote about my trip to Germany with an organization Germany Close Up. Germany Close Up brings Jewish Americans to Germany several times a year on programs to learn about Jewish Berlin in Post WWII society, the Jewish and minority populations of Berlin and the Israeli-German relationship. !Picking Up Pieces of my Jewish Identity in Germany. !Germany is a country with a complicated past, that I have complicated feeling towards. A place I never imagined visiting but there I was in the heart of a land that killed six million of my people. After what was a relatively short flight, in comparison with my usual travels to Israel, I landed in Germany. It was just past 6:00 am and still dark outside. As I exited the plane, and boarded the bus, so many thoughts entered my mind, one of which was that I just arrived in enemy territory. It was cold, dark and rainy as I went through customs and got on the public bus to my hotel.

Along the drive I passed houses and residential areas before the city center. Again my thoughts turned dark. Who lived in these houses during the war, I thought? Did a family of Jewish people live there? Were they kicked out? What happened to them? While walking along the streets through Berlin I encountered small square gold stones called “stumbling stones.” They are placed throughout the city in front of houses and places where Jewish people lived or worked engraved with the victim’s name, birth date and deportation camp location during the Holocaust. The stones are controversial in Jewish German society. , Some argue that the stones are a permanent reminder of the war while others say it’s just another way for Germans to keep stepping all over the Jews. Above all it is a small way in which Germany society is commemorating the victims of the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis.

Responsibility and reconciliation are ever-present and difficult topics for the German people. The big questions that loom are “How did this happen? How do we move on? How do we take responsibility? How do I deal with what my family did during the war? We broached these and other discussion topics with members of the activist group Action Reconciliation Service for Peace (ARSP). Each year ARSP plans a commemorative service to honor the fallen Jews and the events of Kristallnacht.

During my visit we spent the day at Sachsenhausen, a concentration camp right outside of Berlin where Jews, Soviet soldiers and others who opposed the Nazi regime were sent for forced labor and extermination. . Walking through the gates and passing through the infamous words “Arbeit Macht Frei” above me, I experienced that the eerie feeling again, similar to when I first landed. I stood there taking a few deep breaths in and out before I could walk again. The weather was cold, dark and rainy, and the atmosphere was gloomy and dreary, just as I expected it to be. The enormity of the place scared me. The vastness of the camp expanded for miles and was surrounded by walls. Standing inside the remains of the crematorium – the site of countless, senseless murders were ominous. We held a tefila service there to remember those who lost their lives at Sachsenhausen and the Holocaust. We remembered those who were exterminated only because they were Jewish and acknowledged that hatred like this still exists in society today.

With the experience, I discovered a greater appreciation for Germany and German society. Prior to this trip, I had little knowledge of the guilt that some Germans live with each day. Some are ashamed of family members who were part of the SS or Nazi regime. Others are uncomfortable living in the shadow of the crimes of past generations. I remain conflicted about my connection to Germany but appreciate the many ways the country has accepted responsibility for their past mistakes and the steps they are taking today to right the wrongs of the past. While we can forgive, we can never forget. I am still left with one big question: “Can the Germans ever overcome their guilt? !

Joy, congratulations and we appreciate you continuing to take the minutes at our meetings in addition to your duties as Co-President! !Sisterhood was busy this past fall with dinner and Havdalah in the sukkah in October and of course our BINGOtini event in November. BINGOtini was a huge success with over 50 attendees enjoying martinis and BINGO with our wonderful BINGO caller Ron Parker. The event’s success really goes to Barbara Barashick and all who attended. We can’t thank you enough for your time and generosity making this our best FUNdraiser in years! Also, in December Sisterhood shared and led a beautiful Shabbat worship service, thanks to all who participated! !NOW, events to look forward to: we have a Tu B’shevat Wine Tasting that will be held on Saturday, January 18 from 6-8 PM. We’ll enjoy a light Mediterranean fare with some delicious wines to sample and purchase if you’d like. Its $10 per person, so come on out and enjoy some good food, good wine and good friends. Please contact Barbara Barashick at [email protected] if you have any questions and to RSVP. Also, Brotherhood and Sisterhood will be having a bowling event on Saturday, January 25th at 7PM, details to follow. !We will be hosting our paid-up membership dinner on Wednesday, February 12, an invitation will be sent to you if you are a paid-up member of Sisterhood. Not sure if you paid this year? Contact Andi Parker at [email protected] and she can help. Not a member? It’s not too late for you to join! All it takes is a $36 donation to the TBT Sisterhood and you can join us at our February 12th dinner. !You might ask, where do all these donations go? Let us tell you…for Chanukah we provided dreidels and gelt to our preschool students, a box of candles for all Religious School students and gifts to the office and custodial staff. We also were able to provide a scholarship to Sue Thornton to represent our Temple and Sisterhood at the URJ’s Biennial in San Diego, CA this past December. Sue is our WRJ [Women of Reform Judaism] Centennial Representative and she also represented us at WRJ’s Centennial in San Diego. Thanks Sue and we look forward to you sharing about your experience. !Mark you calendars now for upcoming events in the spring. Our nominating committee will be accepting nominations for all Sisterhood board positions for the 2014-2016 term from now through February. Contact Barbara Barashick at [email protected] for more information about participating as an officer or member on Sisterhood’s board or being involved in planning an event. !Also, on Sunday, March 9 there will be a BUNKO FUNdraiser from 1-4 PM and Tuesday, April 8 will be our annual Passover Women’s Seder at 7:30 PM. !Of course, we must mention that our beautiful Judaica Boutique is filled with a variety of gift ideas in a price range for everyone. We continue to offer timely kippot orders for bar and bat mitzvahs and have the ability to order any tallit you’d like at competitive prices. Also, your purchases at the gift shop have no tax and are tax deductible, too! If our hours don’t meet yours, just give the Temple a call and Sue Thornton will schedule an appointment for you. Don’t forget, we’ll be having a Chanukah sale this month too! !That’s about it for now. Thanks for your interest in Sisterhood and we look forward to seeing you around Temple! !Shalom always! !Andi Parker & Joy Pitterman Co-Presidents the Temple Beth Torah Sisterhood !

Temple Beth Torah Shalom January/February 2014 Issue

I hope you have enjoyed reading your ‘hardcopy’ Shalom. The Board decided to investigate whether we could switch to a printed bulletin and this is our first try. Philip Levine had been preparing the Shalom for 5 years, so it was a great shock when he decided to leave our congregation. As chair of the Shalom Task Force, I thought our task was to decide how we would pay for the printed version and select a printer. With the other members of the Task Force — Marcia Weber, Jill Cohen and Sylvia Windmueller — the group is accomplishing this. We have a grateful advertisement from the Meyer Academy to subsidize the cost of this first issue. Now we need others to step up with:!

! 1. More advertisements — if you know a company or member who would like to advertise in the ! Shalom, please ask me ([email protected] or 752-8311) or Lois in the office for the forms and ! price list.!

! 2. Become a “Friend of the Shalom” and give a contribution to keep the Shalom in hardcopy.!

This is my first endeavor at designing a newsletter. I welcome your comments and suggestions in order to make future issues better. To make it the best, if someone knows MS/Publisher or Apple Pages (I used Pages) and would like to take on the Design duties for the bi-monthly Shalom, I would jump for joy! This has been a tough learning-curve and would take an experience user much less time.!

I sooooo appreciate everyone who needed to submit articles and/or flyers. Everything was submitted by the deadline and it made meeting the printer’s deadline possible. Thank you, thank you.!
