In the ancient calendar used by the Romans, from which our calendar was created, the name of each month had a meaning. February was so named because that was the time of the year for a feast called Februa. Some of the months were named for Roman gods. March was named for Mars, the god of war. May was probably derived from the goddess Maia. June was named after the goddess Juno. The months July and August were named, respectively, after Julius Caesar and his successor, Caesar Augustus. September, October, November, and December were named for the Latin numbers seven, eight, nine, and ten.
One month in the ancient Roman calendar had an especially descriptive name: January. The Latin word janua means a door or window from which a person may look both ways, in other words, in and out--forward and back. Historians say that January is also derived from the name Janus, a common household god among the Romans who was often depicted facing in two directions. Essentially he looked forward and backward at the same time. As we stand at the doorway to January and a new year we can look back over the way we have come and also look ahead to the new year and where we are going. At the same time, we look at the year that has past and the year that lies ahead. God promises to be with us in this new year. He will provide us with what we
to look back in appreciation and grace that calls us to look ahead with joyful anticipation.

BRICK MONUMENT EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT ~ SILENT AUCTION SILENT AUCTION on DECEMBER 19, 2010
Thank you to everyone who had donated silent auction items, those who have helped out by bidding on the items and those who have volunteered their time. I have enjoyed
working with the Property Committee and greatly respect and appreciate the time they have given to me and helping develop the plans for the parking lot sign.
The auction was a success, raising $1,816 and additional monetary donations received total $2,182! The sign is estimated to cost $2,000 at 2010 prices without contingency. I have learned a lot in the past 9 years of my scouting adventure, but the experience I have received working on my Eagle Scout project will last a lifetime. Thank you again
Travis Beck, Troop
