hol consumption, this critical study

takes a closer look at the Liquor

Control Board of Ontario (LCBO). This

study documents how, since the LCBO’s

inception in 1927, it generated knowledge about the drinking pop-

ulation and follows through the Board’s transition from paper per-

mit books to the first punched-card computer systemsis. Revealing

how they tracked any and all alcohol consumption, this investiga-

tion records how they created categories and profiles of individuals

so they could “control” drinking in the province. This analysis illus-

trates how this company helped to develop and foster stereotypesaround addiction that persist to this day.

Scott Thompson is a PhD candidate in sociology at the

University of Victoria. He lives in Victoria, British Columbia.

Gary Genosko is the Canada research chair in technoculture in

the department of sociology at Lakehead University. He is the

the justice system too often target the

into the issues that underscore these decisions, this discussion sug-

gests that the desire to obtain a conviction often results in false

evidence and court decisions based on prejudice and racism.

Acknowledging its claims of impartiality, neutrality, and objectivi-

ty, this consideration nonetheless submits that the law is a tool

designed to maintain the illegitimate domination of society, andthat turning to the very system that erred in the first place to cor-

rect its errors is in itself a miscarriage of justice.
