aboard the ship during the war, letters, and photographs.

Palm IslandThrough a Long Lens

 Joanne Watson

Based on extensive archival and oralhistory research as well as on personal

connections with the community, this

volume challenges the prevailing nega-

tive view of Palm Island, Australia, and

argues against the failure to address

today’s continuing Indigenous disad-

vantage. This substantial history re-

counts some of the most explosive

episodes in Queensland history, including the 1930 rampage by the

first Superintendent, the community-wide strike by reserve workers

in 1957, and the tragic death in custody of Mulrunji Doomadgee,

which triggered civil unrest within the Indigenous community.

Heart-wrenching and at times uplifting, this account is essential

reading for anyone interested in the dynamics of power and privi-

lege and their contestation.

What’s Wrongwith ANZAC?The Militarisationof Australian History

Marilyn Lake and Henry Reynolds

Brave and controversial, this account

argues that Australians’ collective obses-

sion with the Australian and New

Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) has dis-

torted their perception of national histo-

ry. Delving into the history of ANZAC and the mythologies

surrounding it, this detailed record explores topics such as the forma-

tion of Australia’s national holiday—ANZAC Day—and the way in

which the spirit of ANZAC is taught in the nation’s classrooms.

Ultimately, this informative narrative claims that ANZAC has become

a conservative political force in Australia and questions whether its

renowned foreign battles were worth all of the bloodshed.

Zombie Mythsof AustralianMilitary HistoryEdited by Craig Stockings

In this fascinating account, leading

Australian military historians tackle 10

of the most enduring historical zom-

bies, or national myths, that have stag-

gered their way through the halls of

military history for more than 200

years. From Aboriginal resistance and invasion to Australia’s

recent involvement in East Timor, this record disproves the incor-rectly memorialized and so-called gallant deeds of past Australian

servicemen. Provocative and opinionated, this record attempts to

correct the historical record.

Fred Harrison

• Author’s previous books sold more

than 25,000 copies

Drawing on case studies of organized

violence—ranging from territorial wars

to organized crime—this record offers

a general theory to account for the use

of force in both the state and civil sectors of society. Challenging

the popular views that the dominant forms of violence are due to

failings of human nature, this volume suggests that the laws and

institutions favoring an approach to property rights that encourage

rent seeking are responsible. This record proposes policies to dis-

mantle the incentives that nurture violence by redistributing powerto the individual.

Market Access & SuccessEdited by Moeketsi Letseka,Michael Cosser, Mignonne Breier, and Mariette Visser

Returning to 2001’s South Africa’s

National Plan for Higher Education,

this group of contributors investigates more thoroughly why stu-

dents in that study dropped out of universities, what helped them

graduate, and what made a successful transition to the labor mar-

Recommendations include implementing the new Ministry of Higher Education’s plan for continuously improving the access and

success, particularly of black students, at all levels of the system.

Soul on StandbyAntony Di Nardo

“Di Nardo has the feel of one of those

‘adventurer/poet’ types who can carry

intimacy with them wherever they go,

who can set up shop in newer and newer places and still come across as

piercing and honest.” — Vox Populism

on Alien, Correspondent

Drawing on memory and its occasional

fictions, these poems mix surreal cap-

tions, tongue-in-cheek cynicism, docu-

mentary techniques, self-parody, storytelling, and even traditional

lyricism. Surprising and diverse, some of the topics presented

include poetry that reduces cholesterol, a letter written to fields of

Punched DrunkAlcohol, Surveillance and theLCBO, 1927–1975

Scott Thompsonand Gary Genosko

Exposing the stakes and consequencesof the enormous bureaucracy behind

the administrative surveillance of alco-

hol consumption, this critical study

takes a closer look at the Liquor

Control Board of Ontario (LCBO). This

study documents how, since the LCBO’s

inception in 1927, it generated knowledge about the drinking pop-

ulation and follows through the Board’s transition from paper per-

mit books to the first punched-card computer systemsis. Revealing

how they tracked any and all alcohol consumption, this investiga-

tion records how they created categories and profiles of individuals

so they could “control” drinking in the province. This analysis illus-

trates how this company helped to develop and foster stereotypesaround addiction that persist to this day.

Scott Thompson is a PhD candidate in sociology at the

University of Victoria. He lives in Victoria, British Columbia.

Gary Genosko is the Canada research chair in technoculture in

the department of sociology at Lakehead University. He is the

author of Félix Guattari. He lives in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Reservation Policyand Its Implement-

ation AcrossDomains in IndiaAn Analytical Review

Niranjan Sahoo

India has the world’s oldest and one

of the most comprehensive affirmative

action policies in the form of reserva-

tions or quotas for its disadvantaged

sections, and this monograph reviews the current public policy

that remains the most controversial and polarizing one that India

has adopted. Recognizing that there is a lack of data-based

understanding of its enforcement, this publication pools datafrom various sources and highlights the need for analytical infor-

mation on affirmative action polices that can be linked across

domains, sharing critical insights on the processes at work and

identifies areas for further research.

in New Delhi and the author of The Politics of Power Sector

Warm Windsof ChangeGlobalisation inContemporary Samoa

Cluny Macphersonand La’avasa Macpherson

Examining a variety of intriguing

issues, this sociological study ana-

lyzes the impact global culture has

had on the flora and fauna, people,

economies, languages, and cultures

of the Pacific for many centuries. The survey draws on findings

from a 40-year research partnership, illustrating the effects of

globalization from the perspective of a typical Samoan village

and documenting the country’s shifts in technology, politics, and

economics. This argument contends that contemporary changes

are presenting a more profound challenge to Samoan social insti-tutions and society than at any other time in the past.

Cluny Macpherson is professor in the School of Social and

Cultural Studies at Massey University in New Zealand. La’avasa

Macpherson is a researcher at Massey University. They are the

coauthors of Samoan Medical Belief and Practice.

When JusticeIs a GameUnravelling WrongfulConviction in Canada

MaDonna Maidment• Part of the Fernwood Basics series

Confronting the issue of wrongful con-

victions, this argument contends that

these so-called mistakes or failures of

the justice system too often target the

financially disadvantaged and visible minority groups. Delving

into the issues that underscore these decisions, this discussion sug-

gests that the desire to obtain a conviction often results in false

evidence and court decisions based on prejudice and racism.

Acknowledging its claims of impartiality, neutrality, and objectivi-

ty, this consideration nonetheless submits that the law is a tool

designed to maintain the illegitimate domination of society, andthat turning to the very system that erred in the first place to cor-

rect its errors is in itself a miscarriage of justice.

MaDonna Maidment is a sociology and anthropology professor

at the University of Guelph. She lives in Guelph, Ontario.

Zombie FactoryCulture, Stress& Sudden Death

Michael Korovkinand Peter Stephenson

Noting that most traditional examina-

tions of stress view it as a medical

condition, this guide takes an anthro-

pological approach and reveals a less

threatening picture of this natural

response to danger. Using narratives

from people in very stressful situations—including a spy, an

executive, a refugee camp worker, and a policeman—the discus-sion shows that even harrowing amounts of stress can be pro-

ductive as long as the patterns of its application do not turn

dangerous. Summarizing these findings as they apply to

American workers, solutions are suggested to avoid becoming a

virtual zombie who has little awareness of his actions.

Michael Korovkin is a social and medical anthropologist. Peter

Stephenson is an applied medical anthropologist and the author

of The Hutterian People and A Persistent Spirit .
