Board approves new SCC library

A rendering of the new library set to open in 2012 at the Spring CreekCampus.

The Spring Creek Campus is undergoing a historicexpansion.

A new Jeffersonian-style building will come online in 2012,complete with classrooms, faculty offices, study rooms anda resource center, in addition to traditional library space. The new library will be constructed on the west side of theSpring Creek Campus juste beyond the exterior fountain.

Construction of the building will create a courtyard aroundthe fountains -- one that will be bounded by a coveredwalkway connecting the original structure with the librarybuilding.

Approved by the Board of Trustees at its Decembermeeting, the new building will included 20 classrooms, 36study rooms, staff offices, and a number of conference andwork rooms. The building will total about 103,000 squarefeet.

More than 13,000 students attended classes at the SpringCreek Campus in the fall 2010, making it the largestcampus in the district.

Collin College opened the new building at the Central ParkCampus last year, capping a major campus expansionplan. The building at the Preston Ridge Campus opened inJanuary 2005. The existing library at the Spring CreekCampus will be renovated to accommodate studentservices and office space. [PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION]

Carnegie Foundation bestows collegeservice honor

Collin College was one of 12community colleges nationwideselected by the CarnegieFoundation for the Advancementof Teaching for its 2010Community EngagementClassification.

Colleges and universities with aninstitutional focus on communityengagement were invited to applyfor the classification, first offeredin 2006 as part of an extensiverestructuring of The CarnegieClassification of Institutions ofHigher Education. In total, 115U.S. colleges and universitieswere distinguished. Theinstitutions selected include 35 research universities, 41master’s colleges and universities, 25 baccalaureatecolleges, 12 community colleges and 2 specializedinstitutions.

Unlike the foundation’s other classifications that rely onnational data, this is an “elective” classification—institutionselected to participate by submitting required documentationdescribing the nature and extent of their engagement withthe community, be it local or beyond. This approachenabled the Foundation to address elements of institutionalmission and distinctiveness that are not represented in thenational data on colleges and universities.

“Through a classification that acknowledges significantcommitment to and demonstration of communityengagement, the Foundation encourages colleges anduniversities to become more deeply engaged, to improveteaching and learning and to generate socially responsiveknowledge to benefit communities,” said CarnegiePresident Anthony Bryk. “We are very pleased with themovement we are seeing in this direction.”

Collin College was joined by Blinn College, Sam HoustonState University, St. Mary’s University, The University ofTexas at Arlington, The University of Texas at Brownsvilleand Texas Southmost College, and The University ofTexas at El Paso as colleges and universities in Texasawarded the honor.

“Obtaining the Carnegie Foundation Community

Engagement Classification acknowledges the dedicationCollin College students and faculty have to serving thecommunity,” said Brenda Kihl, vice president of academicand institutional effectiveness at Collin College. “Last year, students provided over 12,000 service hours to non-profitorganizations. Engagement in the community enriches theeducation experience and broadens perspectives todevelop future servant leaders.”

According to Amy Driscoll, a consulting scholar with theCarnegie Foundation and with the New England ResourceCenter for Higher Education, “We noted strong institutionalalignment across leadership, infrastructure, strategicplanning, budgeting, faculty teaching and scholarship, andcommunity partnerships.” Driscoll further explained, “Thereis increased student engagement tied to the curriculum aswell as increased use of institutional measures forunderstanding student engagement in learning throughcommunity engagement.”
