WELCOME
Welcome to the January/February edition of SPEAK magazine.
Well it feels strange saying this in December but I hope you all had a very
Merry Christmas and are looking forward to the New Year.
So in this issue we have a farewell to Jon, recipes, a new Church Diary and an
article about The Children’s Society.
I hope that you enjoy reading the magazine and as always if you have any
feedback please do speak to myself or Diane Noble. We love to hear them!

DAVID’S PAGE…
2012 – What’s next?
What a year 2012 was. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics and Paralympics and, as I write this, the England Rugby Team are beating the All–Blacks at Twickenham (for the first time since 2003 for the uninitiated!). As a church, 2012 has been an amazing year with the completion of the new church hall and the many blessings of God that we have shared throughout the last twelve months.
But what next? What will 2013 bring? Surely it can’t beat 2012? Well, maybe not with big events, but 2013 is as important to God as 2012 and any other year. What do we have to look forward to this year? As a church, many things. The Confirmation Service on February 3rd with Bishop Robert, the launch of a new weekday children’s group and countless other blessings. For me, I think 2013 will be a year in which prayer will need to be our priority because the devil will attack us.
Prayer brings us closer to God. Jesus knew this and demonstrated it in his life by his frequent withdrawing to be with his father, and his urging of the disciples to pray. When we pray, we recognise God’s protection, God’s provision and God’s provoking of us into actions of love towards our neighbour.
As a church, let us make prayer a priority this year. In our Sunday worship, by making the monthly prayer meetings a priority in our diaries, by remembering to maintain our commitment to the Wave of Prayer and by using the monthly Prayer Diary and other resources to help us to draw closer to God.
2013 might not be a record breaking year for our athletes, but let it be a year in which we prayerfully and obediently grow the Kingdom of God here in Elworth. As the church in its early days did, may we continue in the same way:
“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Acts 2 : 42
May God’s work be seen here in 2013.
David Page.

The diocese asks each church to produce a Growth Action Plan (GAP).
Part of this is to produce 3 goals for each year. Below are our goals
for this year.
Goal 1 ∗ Make optimal use of the new church hall for growing the
kingdom
Goal 2 ∗ Develop children’s and youth outreach
Goal 3 ∗ Review the vision plan of the church

SMALL GROUPS
Small Groups provide an opportunity for people
to make friends, grow in their faith and discuss
life together in a smaller setting than the
Sunday Service.
They are informal, friendly and supportive, providing an ideal setting in
which to meet new people. Groups run throughout the week.

DO YOU HAVE
ANY USED STAMPS?
The Genesis Centre is the only charity in the UK devoted to the prevention of
breast cancer and the Nightingale Centre and Genesis Research Centre, based
in Wythenshawe, is Europe’s first purpose built centre.
There are a wide range of fund raising activities for the centre of which the
collection of used postage stamps is one. The stamps which we collect are
passed on through Inner Wheel organisation and are sold (currently at the rate
of £1 per lb in weight) to raise funds for this worthy cause based here in the
North West.
My thanks go to our friends at St Peter’s Elworth and in
particular to Brian Newton for all the stamps he gathers
together. Not only does he collect stamps from the
church members, the local council and Elworth Hall
School and health centres, but he also receives stamps
from friends and relations all over the country.
The advent of e-mail, together with the price of stamps makes this task more
challenging and we would appreciate your help with this.
Many thanks,
Peter Clewlow

TURKEY AND HAM PIE IngredientsIngredientsIngredientsIngredients
500g leftover turkey, roughly chopped 500g leftover ham, roughly chopped Leftover stuffing, sliced 2 leeks sliced 1tbsp each of chopped fresh tarragon and parsley Leftover bread sauce, leftover cranberry sauce — optional
For the sauce 500ml chicken or veg stock Grated fresh nutmeg 50g butter 500ml double cream 2tbsp plain flour
For the pastry Shop bought pastry, shortcrust is best but puff will do. 1 egg 1tbsp milk
Methods 1) In a large heavy-bottomed saucepan fry the leek until soft.
2) Add the turkey and ham and heat through but don’t stir too much so the meat stays in large chunks.
3) In the saucepan, melt the butter then remove from the heat and add the flour. Stir into a roux, add the cloves and bay leaves then gradually add the cream and stock, stirring continuously to remove any lumps.
4) Return to the heat. Heat until just starting to boil and thicken then throw in the chopped herbs. Turn off the heat, fold the meat through the sauce then leave to cool completely.
5) Roll out just over half of the pastry to your line your pie dish and the rest for the top.
6) Place the larger circle into the dish and trim around the edge of the lip, leaving enough pastry to join with the lid.
7) Tip half the mix into the pastry and then layer with leftover stuffing and if you are using them, bread sauce and dot with cranberry sauce.
8) Layer over the rest of the turkey mix.
9) Whisk the egg and milk and brush the edges of the pastry base with it. Carefully roll one side of the lid around your rolling pin and gently lay it over the base.
10) Join the two edges together by pushing down at even intervals with your thumbs and then trim off the excess with a knife.
11) Decorate the lid with any leftover pastry bits then make 2 small incisions in the centre with a sharp knife and brush the lid with the rest of the egg mix then place in the oven and bake for around 55 mins until golden.

GOODBYE
JON
As many of you are probably aware Jon Prior, our curate, has left St Peter’s to
take on a 50/50 role as an associate minister at St Giles and the school chaplain
at the City of London Freeman’s School, both in Ashtead, Surrey.
During his three and a bit years at St Peter’s, Jon has brought many skills and
attributes which have helped to enrich our church life. In 2011, he, along with
David, brought a group of students from Wycliffe Hall in Oxford for a week of
mission work called ‘Face2Face’. He took part in teaching at holiday clubs,
running Christianity Explored courses and of course, fixing and using technology
to improve the life of the church.
Jon’s last Sunday with us was the 25th November where he preached at all
three services. Members of St Peter’s, Ettiley Heath and Warmingham joined in
with a bring and share lunch to thank Jon for all his work throughout all
churches.
On Thursday 6th December some of us from St Peter’s travelled down to
Ashtead, Surrey to show our support as Jon was licensed into his new role.
What was also great was that people at our church were able to see the service
live through the power of technology and the internet! Thankfully it worked!
As he settles into his new role and life in Ashtead, we thank him for everything
he has done for us and pray that the good work he started is continued.
To all my friends at St Peters,
Thank you so much for all your generosity, both
gifts and encouragements. I have been quite over-
whelmed by the love and support you have shown
as I prepare to leave. It has genuinely been both a
privilege and a joy to walk with you all over the last
few years. My prayer for you is from 2 Peter 3:18
“Continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of
our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.”
With every best wish, and much love,
Jon
PS Sorry about the card, I
couldn’t resist just one last
pun!

FOR THE LAST TIME…
JON’S JOTTINGS
Well, even though this is for the January issue of Speak, I’m writing it only a week after moving to Ashtead. Although I’ve only been here a short time, it feels like I have already spent more time sitting in traffic jams than I did during 3½ years in Elworth! Congestion aside, the move has gone very smoothly and the church and school families here have been really welcoming and have made me feel at home already. Tonight is a men’s curry and comedy night, which seems like a familiar place for me to start in a new parish.
Sharing with you all in Elworth over the last few years has been both a privilege and a joy, and I am grateful to God for bringing me to you. I was very moved by your kindness as I left, both in terms of encouragements and in the generous gifts you gave me. Not only am I enjoying working out how to take decent pho-tos with my new camera, I have also been able to put the money you gave to-wards a new sofa. Now if I get in trouble for sitting around I can blame it on you all, at least in part! Thank you so much for everything you have given to me in so many ways.
I very much hope and expect to keep in touch over the coming months, and look forward to seeing you again at some point in the future. In the meantime, let me challenge you with an exhortation from Philippians 1:27, and ask that you would pray the same for me: “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel.”
With much love Jon
“…and I will cause you to ride in
triumph on the heights of the land…”

Thank you to everyone who celebrated and supported the Christingle service
last January. £1.2 million was raised nationwide for The Children’s Society
through Christingle events in 2011.
This year’s Christingle is themed around families in crisis - a situation that is all
too common and can often result in a child suffering. The pressures of family
life can be worsened by highly stressful events, such as family break up,
unemployment or illness. The crisis situation that can develop is difficult for
young people to cope with and can lead to them running away, putting
themselves at risk of harm. Some children end up living in care where
underlying problems can be left unattended.
The Children’s Society projects exist to help the children suffering in these
situations. This could involve a programme of family sessions to patch up
broken relationships, or simply being a sympathetic ear to a child’s problems
when no-one else seems to listen.
Courtney’s story is an example of how the Children’s Society can help.
Courtney, a young runaway.Courtney, a young runaway.Courtney, a young runaway.Courtney, a young runaway.
Aged 14, Courtney appeared to be like any other teenage girl but she was
having troubles at home and was about to set off on a dangerous path
becoming another ‘runaway’.
It started just one night at a time, sleeping on park benches or in friends’
gardens, but soon developed into longer periods away from home. Courtney
even left her mother’s house permanently and went to live with her father: but
the running away continued.
Despite having a social worker involved from an early stage, Courtney’s cycle of
frustration and running away worsened to a point where she locked herself in
the bathroom and took an overdose of sleeping tablets.
After recovering in hospital, social services decided she would be better off in
care. But this didn’t solve the problem. Courtney felt scared in her first
children’s home and she had none of the support she needed from the staff.
This, inevitably, led to further instances of running away.

Finding stabilityFinding stabilityFinding stabilityFinding stability
It wasn’t until Courtney found The Children’s Society project in Birmingham that
the devastating cycle started to break. The project assigned Courtney a mentor
who began to build a positive relationship between them - something that had
become alien to Courtney.
This new stability, along with finding a children’s home where she felt more
comfortable, has given Courtney the confidence and motivation to get her life
back on track. Now aged 18, she lives independently in her own flat and has
got a job in a nursery, having gained a qualification in child care. Because The
Children’s Society was able to help her, she is in a much better place and
hopes to train to become a mentor herself.
Supporting young runawaysSupporting young runawaysSupporting young runawaysSupporting young runaways
The Children’s Society is working with children like Courtney across the coun-
try. These children can be written off by society and labelled as ‘badly be-
haved’. But as Courtney’s story shows, guidance and a sympathetic ear can be
all it takes to turn their lives around.
The Children’s Society relies on donations to provide these vital services. How-
ever much you can give to this year’s Christingle appeal is greatly appreciated
by the charity, but more importantly by the children, like Courtney, who benefit
from your support.
Thank you.Thank you.Thank you.Thank you.
LISTEN CAREFULLY?
You may be aware that there is a section on the St
Peter’s website entitled ‘SERMONS’ where you can
download and listen to previously preached
sermons from St Peter’s.
So, we’ve had an idea… Would it be useful to anyone out there if
SPEAK and Nexus were also recorded (a little like the Talking
Newspaper) and put on the website?
Please let us have your thoughts on this by email to
(or contact the Church Office) and if there is sufficient demand we can
look at how we can implement it. So far we’ve had no response so if
there’s no need then we won’t do it.
Thank you.
