FEBRUARY 2015

February 5th - Solitaires/ Solidaires Group Art Exhibition toured by Conseil culturel Fransaskois. This exhibition unites for the first time four Fransaskois artists: Anne Brochu Lambert, Liza Gareau Tosh, Jean-Sebastien Gauthier and Michele Mackasey, showing a total of 15 works. Solitaires/Solidaires is a title that seeks to explain the reality of the Fransaskois artist creating in a contemporary prairie setting. It juxtaposes both the concepts – that the artist working in a solitary space, necessary in the process, also requires an experience of solidarity with other artists, especially when language and culture tends to isolate them from the mainstream. Not only can this notion resonate with artists, it also reflects the experience of cultural minorities.” Solitaires/ Solidaires Exhibition Reception - February 5th, 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. – Artists will be in attendance – School programs will be offered in the afternoon for French Speaking Classes – Call 306-445-1760 for more details or to partici-pate.

COUNTRYMAN – R.D. Symons – Opens March 20 in the Main Salon of The Chapel Gallery. This traveling exhibition is produced by the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery featuring 60 illustrations and paintings by renowned artist and naturalist Robert David Symons. The exhibition is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue that has become a published biography with 70 full colour images. The book is written by close friend, artist, and curator Terry Fenton and includes an introduction by Saskatchewan naturalist and author, Trevor Harriet.Symons, who was born, raised and educated in England dreamed of being a cowboy and in 1914 arrived by train in Ma-ple Creek, Saskatchewan. Symons found work from the local ranchers in the Cypress Hills and built a relationship with the land and its inhabitants during the early part of that century. He came from a privileged home in England, and as such, had a formal education which included drawing, painting, and the study of birds. (His father friends included Whistler and Monet) While working on the cattle range, living the lifestyle of a cowboy, Symons would draw the prairie landscape and capture the tiny moments that unfolded on the land. He became one of the first people to illustrate and catalogue the animal and plant species of Saskatchewan. He later became Saskatchewan’s first Game Warden, serving the Cypress Hills and the Battlefords region. He later undertook work at the Saskatchewan Museum of Natural History (now called the Royal Saskatchewan Museum) where his paintings were the back drops for the museum’s dioramas. His illustrations served as the design for limestone façade on the Royal Saskatchewan Museum’s building.
