I trust everyone had a great holiday The Club Party was fantastic as usual Our thanks to our hosts MJ and Sheila Their hospitality and cooking skills are simply not to be missed The first meeting of the new Board was the next day We ate party leftovers figured out who is doing what and hammered out a schedule for the new year Dave Mericle our new board member is taking over the duties of outgoing member Margi Brown-Orozco Everyone else is returning to their old positions Margi will continue to organize the Wine Tour so we will miss her but itrsquos not like we wonrsquot be seeing her

Check out the 2013 calendar of events in this Alfacionada We received a few suggestions from the membership and a few new volunteers as well Erwin and Susan will be hosting a pool party and spaghetti cook-off in April Dave Mericle is a big supporter of Alfapalooza at Gladstonersquos in Long Beach in late June and will bringing his boat and BBQ to the Pine Street Pier for a special AROSC get-together And this fall we are thinking of holding the White Turkey Sale and elections at Lucas Tire in Long Beach They are a major supplier of vintage rubber and Irsquove been told that their in-store prices beat their online prices So if you own an older Alfa you gotta put it on your must-see list

The January meeting will be at a new location the Lunada Bay House in Palos Verdes Estates See page 5

for more info and note that RSVPs are required Wersquoll hand out year-end trophies and have a fine Italian buffet This year we are classing it up a little with music by club member Steve Johnsonrsquos Jazz Legacy Trio

February brings up the Driving School at the Streets of Willow There may not be a lot of passing opportuni-ties at the Streets but it is my favorite track It has been described as a highly technical track which in simple English means it has lots of differ-ent kinds of turns You donrsquot need a dedicated track car and the AROSC School is a great opportunity to come out stick your toe in the proverbial water and hone your driving skills

Plans are in progress to prep our Giulietta Sprint for the February 24th Desert Classic Concours in Palm Springs So far Irsquove replaced the felt in those passenger door window channels and cleaned and adjusted the door latch mechanism Same thing for the driverrsquos door is on the plan and some new goodies have been ordered from Centerline A small rubber sec-tion around the driverrsquos door will be replaced and the new underhood mat is on the agenda

See pages 20-21 for more info on the Desert Classic Concours as it has really evolved into an all-weekend event We will be meeting at Bonnie and Charliersquos desert vacation home on Saturday February 23rd for lunch and then (weather permitting) driving through Joshua Tree National Park to Palm Springs Saturday night Doug and Joyce will be hosting a pre-concours party RSVP early bring

a bottle of wine and a side dish and have a good time but donrsquot forget to set your alarm for the next morning This is a very popular event and one we are very happy to have on the schedule again this year

Our March meeting will be at the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles for the new Fins Flash and Flying on Four Wheels show Some of the displays are permanent but many are not so this current exhibit will be new to all of us We will have a special

parking rate and admission discount for Alfa Club members Our docents Norm and Gene will provide all the inside scoop on the special cars in the Fins display Check out Previews on page 4 for more details

To quote Red Green ldquoRemember if the women dont find you hand-some they should at least find you handy And donrsquot forget the duct tape the handymanrsquos secret weaponrdquo

Our Alfas are fine cars that were made with high-end mechanicals for their time double overhead cams 5-speed transmissions four-wheel disc brakes multiple carbs or even fuel injec-tion In the rsquo60s and rsquo70s there were very few cars that offered this level of sophistication especially for the price but today itrsquos a different world These items that we bought Alfas for are now available on even the least expensive cars And cars today have even more features such as engine management systems that deliver more power and use less fuel airbags stability and traction control 6- and even 7-speed transmissions The list goes on and on

Until Alfa returns to the United States (this year) the only way to get some of these advances on our Alfas is in the form of transplants But do you really want to transplant a BMW drivetrain into an Alfa And if so would it still be an Alfa Of course putting things like airbags traction control or anti-lock brakes into our older Alfas is not really practical but there are things that you can do to update your Alfa without affecting the soul or spirit of the car

Ever since I got my Montreal I have been very disappointed with the lighting The instrument light-ing was basically useless I replaced the light bulbs and even put some aluminum foil inside the instruments with little improvement Finally I put in some LED lights and I can now see the instruments not as good as the backlit instruments in todayrsquos cars but much better than with the original lights I have some plans to

further improve the lighting but that requires modifying the instruments a little bit Nothing noticeable but a bit more work than the average Alfa owner would do

I had a similar issue with the rear lighting The taillights consisted of two 5-watt light bulbs in each one They were not visible during the day and not much better at night So to improve the situation I made up some LED panels for the taillights and the rear turn signals The results were very impressive Again it was more work that just replacing the bulbs with LED bulbs but it is much better There are also headlight replacements available that give better visibility of the road at night My Montreal has European headlights with 100-watt high beams While not legal here they sure do eliminate the darkness

If you like the features of a modern audio system such as satellite radio and MP3 compatibility but dislike how the new radios clash with the classic looks of your Alfa there are companies that refit oldstyle radio housings with modern innards There are also audio systems that can be hid-den and operated by a small remote

So until the arrival of the Giulia and the 4C you can add some modern touches to your Alfa while retaining the classic charm that you so love

The annual Holiday Party at MJ and Sheilarsquos (aka Alfa Clubhouse) in Redondo Beach had a good turnout of over 40 people Members from both the competition and social events groups gathered to enjoy each othersrsquo company and share in the holiday spirit MJ and Sheila hosted the barbecue and the guests brought their specialty dishes

Moe and Margi Orozco brought the Willow Springs 4050 Celebration DVD It played on the flat screens for the fond memories of those that had been there and made the others wish theyrsquod made it

A highlight was the celebration of Bruce and Pat Westrsquos anniversary (see at right) for which they brought a couple of bottles of Premier Cru Champagne and shared with the guests Another special celebration was Bonnie Schwartzrsquos birthday It be-

ing the first day of Hanukkah Bonnie lit the Menorah

The wonderful assortment of side dishes provided by the guests included salads vegetable casseroles and a wide variety of desserts Yum Adding to the enjoyment of the food and the company was the wine tasting table of fine reds whites and bubblies What more could we ask Door prizes We had them If you missed it this time be sure to come next year ndash same time same place same great party

The location on February 24 is within the Desert Classic Concours drsquoElegance staged at the Doral Desert Princess Country Club and Resort 67967 Vista Chino Cathe-dral City CA 92234

Alfa Romeo will have a marque corral in the show for which you need to pre-register The entry fee is $50 per car which includes admission for two persons a parking spot on the green and a goodie bag We need to be on the green no later than 9 am
