The PREZ Speaks -

The first trip of the year left Thurs. Dec. 11 for Breckenridge; I can't wait for Kara's article to see how the trip went. I have heard the west has really gotten tons of snow dumped on them, so this should make for a great ski season. If you haven't signed up already you better get with the program. Some trips have to start canceling their air and rooms the end of December through mid January to avoid fees.

I received a lot of compliments about the Holiday Party. It was a great time had by all that were there. I jazzed up the food selection a little bit. Steve Goldstein did a great job with Baby Boomers, sorry Dan that you could-n't be there.

You can still sign-up to receive the Schussboomer via e-mail. Just send your e-mail address to Marilyn Rader at [email protected]. So far over 96 people have signed up. Elections will be here before we know it. Openings are for President-elect and secretary at this time. Anyone interested in any of these positions can go to indyskiclub.org. for a description of the officer positions. We

have Board meetings 6 times a year and a summit meeting in May. Most meetings last about 2 hrs. Please think about it and help the club remain viable. Our next club meeting will be April 9, 2009 at Adams Mark.

(Next board meeting is April 7, club members welcome) Happy New Year everyone!! Ski safely and have fun!

Christy

Let it Snow, let it snow, let it snow! Breckenridge Long weekend trip December 11-15 The Breckenridge crew kicked off the season with a great start with 5 new members of the 16 who attended the trip. We even had snow boarders! Yahoo! We arrived at the new Indianapolis terminal, checked in, grabbed a drink and waited to take off. We had no glitches until we went to collect our bags in Denver. Jutta Hoellein complained to the airline that the baggage handlers had busted the wheels off of her bag. The counter attendant asked Jutta if they needed to call the authorities because she had raised her voice. After Jutta and Rudy were threatened, they quickly got on the bus. Later when Jutta was unpacking she discovered they had placed the busted wheels in the suitcase. Thanks United Airlines!

We then headed to our favorite stop on the way to the mountains - Applejacks! Everyone gathered groceries, liq-uor, and a bite to eat. We arrived at The Village of Breckenridge to be greeted by Amy Russo who had every-thing worked out. We stayed at the Plaza, within walking distance of everything on Main Street and the slopes. The Quicksilver chair lift was about a 100 yards from our Condo. We had great accommodations and highly recommend the area for future club trips. Just before we arrived, Brecken-ridge received over 30 inches of snow and had opened Peak 9, so 50% of the big resort was open.

Many of us headed out by 9AM Friday morning to hit the slopes and met up at 11:30 at Ten Mile restaurant for lunch. Mel Crichton gave a great ski lesson the first day to get everyone’s ski legs working again. One of our new members, Tom Shepherd, had been skiing only 3 times and he was doing well on the blue runs after Mel’s lesson. We were all so proud to see how well Tom was skiing. He did even better the next day in a “private” lesson af-ter the would-be bump skiers did not show for their lesson. Some of us met for après ski at the Maggie to wind down and talk about our awesome day.

Friday evening most of us walked to our pizza party at Fatty’s Pizzeria. I decided that our small group would have more fun going out for pizza rather than staying in one of our condos. I think everyone really enjoyed our great pizza and salad.

On Saturday, I woke up to the weather report. One eye was barely open when I heard the weather man say “possible 3 to 5 feet!” I sat straight up in bed and said “Oh $#!T!” The snow sounded awesome, but as trip leader all I could think about was “how the heck we were going to get down the mountain Monday morning to get home?” I was OK with getting stuck for a few days, but I worried that I would have to figure out the logistics. However, Saturday night we received a mere 5 inches of powder with -13 degrees wind chill. Other Ski areas received 10-15 inches of snow. The 3-5 feet didn’t happen.

We had to wake up pretty early to catch an 11 AM flight Monday. It took our bus about 3 hours to get to the airport due to the icy conditions and morning rush hour traffic in Denver. After checking in and getting through security, we all headed towards our gate. While walking to the gate I heard one Mike Gossweiler being paged. Once he checked, Mike discovered he had left his ID at security. Mike went back to security to get his ID but forgot to take his boarding pass with him, so he could not get back through without it. He had to stand in line at the airline counter to get a boarding pass and then stand in line to get through security again. Meanwhile I am pleading with the flight attendant to hold the plane, which of course was out of the question. We all boarded the plane hoping Mike would make it, but he never did. The airline gave away his seat and closed the hatch on the plane. Because it was 13 below zero when we boarded, the crew only had one truck that was not frozen to

back the planes up to head to the runway. We sat there for an hour before it was our turn to be backed out. I am pretty sure Mike was cussing us as he watched us sit there while he watched from inside the terminal. Mike, I hope you made it home safely.

We really had a great time and a great group of ski club members. Breckenridge is a beautiful town with great skiing and snow. We must return.

Thank you everyone for a great trip.
