1 A Few Words From the Administration Dear Parent/Guardian: Happy 2019! We hope you all had a Merry Christmas and some me to relax with friends and family. A new year always presents us with the opportunity of seng goals about ways in which we would like to change things about ourselves or our lives. It is a great me for students to decide to really dig in, work harder, and get the grades they really want for themselves! Although December 12 th seems like a long me ago, we would like to thank all who helped with our celebraon in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our beauful Mass and breakfast – now such a tradion at Cristo Rey - were the result of the work of so many parents and of the generous donaons of so many families! Students will also be taking pictures either on the 22nd and 23rd of January depending on their work day. All seniors will take their pictures on the 23rd. For 9 th -11 th graders, your child will bring home an order form that should be returned on the day they take their pictures. Seniors will receive a proof of their picture on picture day and you can then decide if and which pictures you would like to order. Semester One ends on January 18th. Please save the 27th of January for Report Card Day. Teachers will be in the cafeteria and the gym and report cards will be available in the lobby of the gym/cafeteria building. Teachers will be available the enre aſternoon so that you can talk with the teachers of your son or daughter. Our Director of Technology, Mr. Byron Durk will also be present to answer quesons about accessing informaon, including grades, in Plus Portals. This is the GPA that is most important for college and scholarship applicaons because it summarizes the overall academic performance of a student. The GPA for the current semester determines Honor Roll status and eligibility for sports and acvies. If a student receives an F for the semester in any course, he/ she will be expected to make up that class in order to return to Cristo Rey next fall or to graduate. Mulple failures put any stu- dent in danger of being dismissed from Cristo Rey, but parcularly seniors. The best way for students to maintain good grades is to apply consistent effort in every class throughout the enre semester. That is why seng a New Year’s resoluon to work hard every day might be a good idea! Estimado Padre de Familia: Feliz 2019! Esperamos que todos hayan tenido una Feliz Navidad y algo de tiempo para relajarse con amigos y familiars. Un nuevo año siempre nos presenta la oportunidad de fijar objetivos sobre las formas en que nos gustaría cambiar las cosas sobre nosotros mismos o nuestras vidas. Es un buen momento para que los estudiantes decidan realmente atrincherarse, esforzarse y obtener los grados que realmente quieren para sí mismos! Aunque el 12 de diciembre parece como hace mucho tiempo, nos gustaría dar las gracias a todos los que ayudaron con la cele-bración en honor de nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Nuestra hermosa Misa y desayuno – tradición en Cristo Rey - fueron el re-sultado de trabajo de muchos padres y de las generosas donaciones de muchas familias. A los estudiantes se les tomarán fotos los días 22 y 23 de enero dependiendo de su día de trabajo. Todos los seniors tomarán sus fotos el día 23. Para los estudiantes de 9º a 11º grado, su hijo/a llevará a casa un formulario que se debe devolver el día que toman sus fotos. Los seniors recibirán un prueba de su fotografía ese día y usted puede decidir si y qué imágenes desea ordenar. El primer semestre se termina el 18 de enero. Favor de reservar el 27 de enero, Día de Calificaciones. Los maestros estarán en la cafetería y el gimnasio, las calificaciones estarán disponibles en el vestíbulo del edificio gimnasio/cafetería. Los maestros estarán disponibles toda la tarde para hablar con usted. Nuestro Director de tecnología también estará presente para contester cualquier pregunta que tengan acerca del acceso a la información, incluyendo las calificaciones, en Plus Portals. Para minimizar el tiempo de espera y aliviar el congestiónamiento debido a estacionamiento, favor de asistir este dia en el sigui-ente horario: 12:00 – 1:00pm Padres de estudiantes con el apellido de A-E 1:00 – 2:00pm Padres de estudiantes con el apellido de F-L 2:00 – 3:00pm Padres de estudiantes con el apellido de M-Q 3:00 – 4:00pm Padres de estudiantes con el apellido de R-Z Esperamos verlos este día de calificaciones. Las calificaciones del semestre contiene el promedio de calificaciones (GPA acumulativo) y del semestre GPA. El acumulado es un promedio de todos los grados de semestre a través de los años de un estudiante en Cristo Rey. Este promedio es el que es muy importante para aplicaciones de Universidad y beca porque resume el desempeño académico en general de un estudiante. El GPA para el semestre actual determina el estatus de Honor Roll y elegibilidad para deportes y actividades. Si un estudiante recibe una F el semestre en cualquier curso, él/ella deberá recuperar el curso si desean regresar a Cristo Rey el próximo otoño o para graduarse. Múltiples bajas calificaciones ponen a cualquier estudiante en peligro de ser despedido de Cristo Rey, pero sobre todo los Seniors. La mejor manera para que los estudiantes mantengan buenas calificaciones es aplicar un esfuerzo constante en todas las clases a lo largo de todo el semestre. Es por eso que establecer una resolución de Año Nuevo a trabajar duro cada día puede ser una buena idea!

Padres de Familia, Como una forma de compartir nuestra fe católica, Cristo Rey organizará un curso de estudio bíblico para padres a partir de enero. Este curso es una excelente manera para que los padres participen en la formación religiosa de sus hijos. Ofreceremos diez sesio-nes los viernes por la noche de 6pm a 7:30pm. Nuestra primera sesión será el viernes 18 de enero de 2019. No es necesario regis-trarse por adelantado; La participación es gratuita y abierta a todos los padres. A Message from College Counseling Take advantage of opportunities to learn outside of the classroom! Students have the opportunity to spend their summers continu-ing their education through summer enrichment programs. Summer enrichment programs are hosted by colleges, universities, and organizations. These programs are aimed at providing high school students with the opportunity to dive head first into an area of study or get a chance to experience college life, and learn more about potential careers Students always return from their exciting summers happy that they had the opportunity to participate in these enrichment programs. There are many free programs and opportunity to get scholarships! Students should be checking for email messages from Ms. Nieto and Ms. Delgado in the College Counseling Office about these program opportunities.

This message is to remind you about the different types of scholar-ships that are still available to students. Some examples of the scholarships available to students are: merit-based, need-based, athletic, minorities, religion, community service, gender-based, military, first-generation, etc. Many scholarship opportunities can be found in Naviance, an online resource tool that has been designed specifically for Cristo Rey. Here, students can research college and view a listing of scholarship oppor-tunities. ILLINOIS TAX CREDIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (Updated 1/4/2019)
This year, more than 40 students received a “Tax Credit” Scholarship. This Program will continue next year – students can receive a full scholarship, paid to Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. You should know:
Applications this January are for scholarships in the 2019-20 school year.
Do not apply if your student already has a renewable scholarship for next year.
Priority will not be given to students already receiving this scholarship this year.
The only qualification is annual family income:

HOW TO APPLY
You must apply in the first minutes for each application! Scholarships are given on a first-come-first-served basis.

You should apply through both Empower Illinois and Big Shoulders Fund. o Empower Illinois' application is two parts (https://empowerillinois.org/students/how-do-i-apply/)
Part 1: Short online reservation form on Tuesday, January 15 at 7PM o Required information: parent names; address; phone number; email address; applicant names.
Part 2: Beginning Friday, January 18, applicants will begin receiving instructions by email to complete the full scholarship application.
o Big Shoulders’ application is one part and will open online Tuesday, January 22 at 8AM (https://www.bigshouldersfundsgo.org/apply/).
To apply, you need three things. All documents must be electronic copies – scanned or photos taken with your phone camera – saved in an email or on a USB drive.
o (1) Proof of income from 2017 or 2018 (ITIN numbers accepted): Federal tax return 1040, pages 1 and 2 only (Empower Illinois also accepts W-2; 1099(s); WIC/SNAP benefits statement; or letter, on company letterhead, from employer(s) indicating cash wages paid.).
o (2) Proof of residence (one of the following): Illinois driver’s license with current address; Illinois identification card (issued by the Secretary of State) with current address; utility bill with name and current address; residential lease (current address) in the parent’s name.
o (3) Current email address with password to access email on other computers.
