Unto the most noble and prosperous populous of Wastekeep do Baron Styrkarr and Baroness Stjarna bring greetings.
We are fresh returned from the fabulous Yule Feast presented so well by HL Luaithrenn and Lord Roth. Thanks again to everyone who helped make such a great event possible. It seems we keep
topping ourselves and we’re setting a difficult act to follow! Highlights of the event included presenting two esteemed mem-bers of the Barony their Silver Keeps, congratulations Roth and Mairghread! Of course we also enjoyed admitting two untouch-ably courteous men to the Order of the Golden Garter. Gallant
Rowland received his garter from the leg of the Baroness herself and Sir Aaron had the, er…distinction? of receiving his garter
from the leg of the Baron! We are overwhelmingly pleased to announce Master Ulrik as the premiere member of the Order of the Silver Fox. This award is intended to recognize people in Wastekeep who personify what we all strive for in many aspects of the society – service, leader-ship, fighting, arts and sciences, etc. In short, one who inspires and contributes to making everyone’s SCA experience a better one! It is our intent that one person per year be admitted to this
order each year at Yule. We gladly rely on input from our popu-lace regarding the virtues of our members in consideration for this
and other Baronial or Kingdom awards. You hear that? We need more recommendations for awards! We’ve had a few submitted, and have submitted a few of our
own, but would like to have some more! Some people are very good at getting the attention of the Baron or Baroness and serve as their own recommendation whether they know it or not. The contributions of other gently serving nobles may escape our no-tice and we therefore rely heavily on input and feedback from all of you! For a quick reminder of Baronial awards please check
Master Ulrik’s excellent Baronial website, http://www.wastekeep.org/awards.php.

HAMLET Look here, upon this picture, and on this, The counterfeit presentment of two brothers. See, what a grace was seated on this brow; Hyperion's curls; the front of Jove himself; An eye like Mars, to threaten and command; A station like the herald Mercury New-lighted on a heaven-kissing hill; A combination and a form indeed, Where every god did seem to set his seal, To give the world assurance of a man: This was your husband. Look you now, what follows: Here is your husband; like a mildew'd ear, Blasting his wholesome brother. Have you eyes? Could you on this fair mountain leave to feed, And batten on this moor? Ha! have you eyes? You cannot call it love; for at your age The hey-day in the blood is tame, it's humble, And waits upon the judgment: and what judgment Would step from this to this? Sense, sure, you have, Else could you not have motion; but sure, that sense Is apoplex'd; for madness would not err, Nor sense to ecstasy was ne'er so thrall'd But it reserved some quantity of choice, To serve in such a difference. What devil was't That thus hath cozen'd you at hoodman-blind? Eyes without feeling, feeling without sight, Ears without hands or eyes, smelling sans all, Or but a sickly part of one true sense Could not so mope. O shame! where is thy blush? Rebellious hell, If thou canst mutine in a matron's bones, To flaming youth let virtue be as wax, And melt in her own fire: proclaim no shame When the compulsive ardour gives the charge, Since frost itself as actively doth burn And reason panders will.

As you may know, the King and Queen rely on the landed gentry for recommendations for Kingdom awards also. You may submit these recommendations through us (preferred method per TRMs)
or submit them directly to their majesties. On a personal note, thank you to everyone who has helped us in our role as Baron and Baroness. We are still new at this and, of course, make mistakes and learn as we go. We are blessed to have such a supportive populace. You have made us feel wel-
come at every turn and have never failed to offer help, advice and support. We look forward to learning more and becoming more
and more effective at this delightful task. Blessings and good wishes to all of you this new year. We will
see you all at many upcoming events and would love to see more Baronial involvement in Kingdom level events as well – see you
at 12th night!
In service, Styrkarr and Stjarna

Some friends and I in a public house Was playing a game of chance one night When into the pub a fireman ran His face all a chalky white. "What's up", says Brown, "Have you seen a ghost, Or have you seen your Aunt Mariah?" "Me Aunt Mariah be buggered!", says he, "The bleedin' pub's on fire!"
And there was Brown upside down Lappin'' up the whiskey on the floor. "Booze, booze!" The firemen cried As they came knockin' on the door (clap clap) Oh don't let 'em in till it's all drunk up And somebody shouted MacIntyre! MAC-INTYRE! And we all got blue-blind paralytic drunk When the Old Dun Cow caught fire.
"Oh well," says Brown, "What a bit of luck. Everybody follow me. And it's down to the cellar If the fire's not there Then we'll have a grand old spree." So we went on down after good old Brown The booze we could not miss And we hadn't been there ten minutes or more Till we were quite pissed.
Then, Smith walked over to the port wine tub And gave it just a few hard knocks (clap clap) Started takin' off his pantaloons Likewise his shoes and socks. "Hold on, " says Brown, "that ain't allowed Ya cannot do that thing here. Don't go washin' trousers in the port wine tub When we got Guinness beer."
Then there came from the old back door The Vicar of the local church. And when he saw our drunken ways, He began to scream and curse. "Ah, you drunken sods! You heathen clods! You've taken to a drunken spree! You drank up all the Benedictine wine And you didn't save a drop for me!"
And then there came a mighty crash Half the bloody roof caved in. We were almost drowned in the firemen's hose But still we were gonna stay. So we got some tacks and some old wet sacks And we nailed ourselves inside And we sat drinking the finest Rum Till we were bleary-eyed.
Later that night, when the fire was out We came up from the cellar below. Our pub was burned. Our booze was drunk. Our heads was hanging low. "Oh look", says Brown with a look quite queer. Seems something raised his ire. "Now we gotta get down to Murphy's Pub, It closes on the hour!"

cloaks for the Kingdom Water Bearers and have offered to keep them cleaned and repaired, a letter of recommendation to Their Majesties for
a kingdom level award is appropriate.
Anyone can recommend anyone else for any type of award. The Crown is just as pleased to receive recommendations for the Peerage Orders as they are for AA’s, Jambes and Gouttes. They also appreciate receiving recommendations for those awards which are given out less frequently, such as the Lion’s Cub, Mano d’Oro, Carp, Lion of An Tir and Court Baron. You do not need to be a member of an order to recommend someone for that order. It is ill-advised however to recommend your-self, and it is usually considered bad form for a husband to recommend a wife, or a girlfriend to recommend her boyfriend and vice versa. Re-member to sign your recommendation, as the Crown does not accept anonymous recommendations. Include your titles and offices as well. If there are others whom the Crown could contact as additional references, include their names and titles also (be sure to ask them first!). The Crown will usually contact Their peers and officers in the branch to solicit additional comment on your recommendation. Send AA recom-mendations to the King and Queen as well as the Prince and Princess of
the Principality.
The Crown keeps a recommendations book which is passed from one reign to the next. The contents of the book is sorted by branches, and multiple letters recommending a particular person are kept together. Although some Royal Couples will accept petitions, most make Their decision on the number of letters that They receive for a particular can-didate. It is helpful to write a separate letter for each person that you are recommending. It is helpful to have the date, candidate’s name and award that you are recommending them for at the top of the page, or highlighted somewhere in the text. Some Crowns will ask for calligra-phed letters, others prefer typewritten. Regardless of which style you choose, your letter should be clear and easy to read. It should also be on
paper that is 8½ x 11" so that it fits into a standard 3-ring binder.
Most of all, be patient. Do not expect the Crown to reply to your letter, even if it is sent via e-mail. Do not expect the award to be given at the very next event that the person is at, or even during the current reign. Bear always in mind that the granting of awards is entirely the preroga-tive of The Crown. By making the recommendation, you’ve done your duty. A letter of recommendation is simply that---a recommendation. If the person you are recommending is truly worthy, their labors will be recognized sooner or later. As will your own some day.

Wastekeep Word Trivia
Who was knighted on this day?
Sept 4 AS 29/1994 Answer in Next months issue
Writing an Award Recommendation By Lao Khatun, Duchess of An Tir
When I was queen my greatest pleasure came from giving public recog-nition to the endeavors of my people in the arts, sciences and in service. Having the rare opportunity to serve this realm twice from the Lion’s Throne, I have witnessed several people evolve from newcomer to titled noble, and in some instances, to be admitted to the Peerage Orders. Any queen will tell you that the decisions that are made regarding these forms of recognition are not made lightly. Nor are they made independ-ently. Although it is the prerogative of the Crown to bestow awards, They depend upon the advice of Their people, whom They often charge
to bring to Their attention those who are deserving of royal favor.
When you write a letter of recommendation, you should include the candidate’s name, persona, the branch they are from, and what they have done to be worthy of elevation. List what awards and titles they currently hold, and state which award you feel the candidate should be considered for. If they hold an office, include how long they have held the office, and what improvements they have made to it. State how long the person has been in the Society in addition to their contributions. Typically the Crown will consider giving an Award of Arms to some-one who has been a contributing member the Society for at least 1½ - 2 years. For Grants of Arms (Jambe de Lion, Goutte de Sang, etc.) 3 - 5 years is considered a reasonable length of time. It can take several years
for a candidate to be admitted to one of the peerage orders.
The Crown looks specifically for ways in which the candidate has been of service to the Kingdom as a whole. If the candidate has made clothes for everyone in your household, perhaps a thank-you is in order rather than a letter of recommendation to the Crown. If the candidate has made fighting tabards for the sergeants of your Barony, recommend them to your Baroness for a Baronial service award. If they have made
