100 Years & Counting!

Page 2: JANUARY • FEBRUARY 2015files4.design-editor.com/39/393229/UploadedFiles/... · staff who worked on this Celebration ! It was un-forgettable! 2014 was a good year for the club as

Over 300 members and their guests joined in on the Centennial Celebra-tion on Sunday, December 14, 2014.

Exactly 100 years to the date when the Club was established in 1914.

If you missed this wonderful Centennial Din-ner/Dance, the photos taken by Tim Ulmer, are posted on the Club’s website at www.stockton-golfcc.com under the History link. In this issue are just a few great photos taken during the festivities! Kudos to all committee members and staff who worked on this Celebration ! It was un-forgettable!

2014 was a good year for the club as we in-creased the membership and offered many dif-ferent events for our members and their guests. Both the Men’s and Thursday Ladies Invitation-als were full with waiting lists. The Sharks swim team went undefeated and had 99 juniors on the team! The Beatles tribute Band and the Camp Out on the Range were both hits. Over 225 had dinner on the range and enjoyed the music of the Beatles. The banquet tables were on the driving range where the balls collect and the band was on the north edge of the hitting area of the range tee. It was a spectacular view watch-ing the band and seeing our beautiful clubhouse lit up at night in the background. As a side note: the San Joaquin Sheriff closed us down early be-cause the band was too loud for the neighbors! All had a good time anyway!

The Camp Out had over 70 adults and kids sleep over on the 18th fairway near the green. 22 tents were put up as the kids enjoyed differ-ent games, dinner and S’mores over the camp-fires. Breakfast was served the next morning and the campers were packed up and gone by 9:00am. Our resident golf professional Richard Howarth and Chere purchased new camp gear just to be our camp hosts !

A new bridge on #10 fairway was built and set in place complimentary of the Shipman’s (Jerry, Patty and Randy). Garrett Becker and Mike Don-

aldson also gave back to the Club by helping gra-ciously with this project as well as others. THANK YOU to all members who have volunteered their time, services or products in order to make this a better Club!

A big thank you also goes to Jim Anthony our 2014 Board President and his Board of Directors. They worked tirelessly for the Club and were liai-sons to all the committees. Kevin Kauffman was very instrumental in helping with the potential challenges the Club was having in regards to the drought and our water situation. Thankfully all turned out well.

Ask a friend to join our Club in 2015. Bring them out for golf, lunch or dinner. Or invite them to one of the many events the Club offers. I will be more than pleased to meet with them, give them a tour of the Clubhouse or send them some membership information. Let’s have a banner year !

Here’s to 2015 ! See you at the Club!

mixer has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 10 from 5:30 to 7:00 PM. Hors d’ oeuvres will be served again this year.

In 2015 we will report our financial progress more frequently. Beginning with your February statement, we will include a quarterly summary of our revenues and expenses as well as assets

and liabilities. While our financial position is not “flush”, prior boards and your hardworking staff have done an admirable job of managing through some tough times.

So. I encourage you to use your club. We have a fine facility for sharing recreational time, conduct-ing business and community functions, banquets and parties, working out and casual dining. As I

said, this is the first year of the next 100. Let’s make it a good one.

See you at the Club!

MEMBER PROFILE by Kelley Spooner

Bill was born & raised in Stockton, California to parents Tito and Anita whom came over from Italy. He is one of

three children, attended Stockton High School and graduated from Stockton College in 1954. Just out of school, he went to work for his father at Pacific Storage Company as a dispatcher and moving cost estimator.

In 1965, Bill went into the insurance business with a partner. Merely five years later, in 1970, he bought out his partner and changed the name to Bertilacchi Insurance Agency. Since 1965, the firm has grown to employ 16 full time staff members, the four original family members, bringing great service, along with jobs, to the Stockton area. In 2013, Bill’s son John took over the company’s affairs. They offer personal insurance, business coverages, and are more than just an insurance firm; they are a Stockton family-owned business for 49 years strong and counting.

Bill joined the club in 1968, and is affectionately known around the club as “The Commissioner.” His main responsibilities lie with the group of members called the “Roseville Gang”, and he organizes their golf pairings on Wednesday & Saturdays. The name “Roseville Gang” came about when he was seen playing with his usual foursome Max Freeman, Jack Gall, and Vic Segrini. A car dealer friend of his observed one day that golf balls from this group were flying in all directions. He yelled out to Bill and said you people look like the Roseville gang. The Roseville Gang was a group of car dealers in Roseville, CA that did a series of ads on T.V., doing a bunch of clumsy and goofy things. Still today the name stands, and the golf games are organized

by the “Commissioner.” The group has some 30 members that play from time to time and play to a new handicap after each round, derived from a system known only to the group. It levels the playing field; Bill went on to say, and eliminates the sandbaggers of the group.

Bill and wife Louanne are active in the club participating in many Couples golf events and Holiday tournaments. Additionally, they attend several club functions, and have hosted the company Christmas lunch at the club for a number of years. In 1999, Bill served as the committee chair for the club’s 85th birthday celebration that included Fireworks ending the evening being launched on the 18th fairway capping off a special night for him. When not on the golf course, Bill can be found in the fitness center working out or just “shooting the breeze” with a few friends. The “Commish” is truly a fixture at the club.

Bill BertilacchiWell here’s hoping you all made it

through the festive season and any gifts you received were the ones you

had requested from Santa. On November 7, 2014 the Senior Men’s Club

wrapped up another fun-filled year with the Se-nior Men’s Club Championship. Congratulations are in order to the following folks for winning their respective flights. Winning the Gross Champion-ship was none other than Matt Kucich shooting a respectable 81. Lee Dovichi edged out Guy Petzold in a playoff to win the Net Championship with a 1 under par net 70.

Guy Petzold took the honors in the Bobby Jones Flight with a net 70 and he was followed by Butch McCormack and Kurt Smith who both carded net 72’s. In the Ben Hogan Flight the ever masterful Jim Dyke came out on top with a net 73, and Walt McGillvray was right behind him with a net 74. Rounding out this flight was Keith Belt with a net 77. Hey these guys are good!!!

Players participating in the Home & Home events earn points for each tournament in which they play. At the end of the year the players with the most points are rewarded with a round of golf at a prestigious country club in our area. The 2014 participation point winners are: Guy Petzold (20 pts), Bob Morrison (19 pts), Walt McGillvray (18 pts), Garry Potten (18 pts), Keith Belt (17 points), Ron Daniel (17 pts), Tony Galvez (16 pts), Lance Rieber (16 pts). Alternates, each with 15 points are Ron Beeman, Weldon Hess, Dan Lane, and Phil Long. Well done gentlemen.

Looking forward to the 2015 season, we have a full slate of Home & Home tournaments on our schedule. As in years past we will get things roll-ing with our annual Kick-Off tournament on March 20th. This is one our most popular events of the year, so mark this date on your calendars and get ready to rumble! While you are marking dates on the calendar, be sure to circle July 10, which is when we will be holding our Senior Men’s Invitational…and this tournament has gotten better every year.

The Senior Men’s Club, the 18 and 9 Hole Ladies’ Clubs have been working with the pro-shop staff in developing a Combination Course where select holes will have tees forward of where our current tees are located. The Combo Tees the Senior Men will be using in our Home and Home events will make our course play a little over 6,000 yards which should bring par into play on some of the longer par 4’s.

Get off the couch and make a commitment to join us this Year!!!

the hope of great weather and hopefully less challenging drought conditions for us all.

The recent rains have helped for sure, and we keep our fingers crossed that the course rains, reservoirs and the snow levels continue to grow for our golf course, home owners and the farmers alike.

Over the last couple of months at the course we have had around 7 inches of rain in total. Our greens have had sodium and bi-carbonates flushed through the root zone which has allowed for greater fertilizer uptake as well as oxygen into the grass plant. Several light top dressings with sand have helped keep the greens a little firmer during the wet periods.

The grass has slowed but is definitely still growing, and we will be maintaining and trying to keep the course detailed as best we can during the winter. We will be undertaking project works while maintain the course, with tree work, drainage work, course fixture replacement or refurbishment and also building a green nursery on the raised area behind #14 green and the restroom closer to #16 green.

Winter time is a time also for us to service and make needed repairs to our equipment. We also will have our pump station serviced to keep our pumps in working order for next growing season. Our crew generally is smaller during the winter months as our hard working staff are now able to take extended vacation now that the summer months have passed.

It is that time of year again also with the chance

of frosts delaying the start of the morning rounds. We are always thankful for the patience of the members as we do all we can to get golf underway, while keeping a watchful eye to not damage the grass and cause long term problems.

I would like to wish everyone a safe, healthy and happy New Year.

See you on the course.

As we swing into the New Year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board of Directors, entire membership,

and the staff for their support of the club at SGCC this past year. It was a memorable 2014 celebrat-ing the clubs’ 100 years! Some of the major events were the Men’s & Ladies Invitational’s, Media Day, the Beatles tribute on the Range, the Kid’s Cam-pout on #18, and the finale…the 100th birthday Celebration on December 14th. It was a beautiful night of festivities, dinner, toasting, and dancing. All had fun! Available to commemorate the 100 years is a centennial book done by SGCC member Peter Ottesen. It is a must have, so if you haven’t placed your order don’t delay any longer. Contact the office today!

In early December, I competed in the LPGA T&CP Team Classic in Palm Desert. This annual event is one that I like to place on my playing schedule. My teammate this year was LPGA Tour player Lisa Ferrero (from Lodi). The event features a Pro-Am, and a two-day professional event. After shooting a best ball score of six under 66 on day one, we were one shot behind the team of Amy Alcott & Katherine Imrie who shot 65. We were paired with them on day two when the format got a bit more challenging; a modified chapman. In the end, we

shot a two under for a two-day total of eight under for the event and missed a playoff for first place by one shot. We had fun playing with Amy Alcott an LPGA member of the Hall of Fame, and the payday was not too bad either. Special thanks to Lisa for playing in the event and best of luck this year as she returns fulltime to the LPGA Tour.

Congratulations to our new board members elected to take office this month Michael Butler, Darlene Kelly, and Nick Salvetti and begin their three-year term.

See you at the club,

The Thursday Ladies wrapped up their golfing year with a festive Christmas Luncheon on December 11. Such fun we

had as we sipped champagne cocktails while chat-ting with our golfing members and reconnecting with our honorary lady golfers. We were especially happy to enjoy a visit from Lee Hanson who made the trip down from Oregon.

A recap of the year was given by Ardythe Hess and Toni Murdock as they thanked all the ladies who served as Tournament Chairs. This year’s major winners were Mattie Zedlitz, our Handicap Cham-pion, and Ardythe Hess who recaptured the title of Ladies Club Champion! Toni announced that there were 33 birdies this year. Ardythe had the most with a total of 7. WGANC Awards were distributed by Linda Stead to Mary Westin and Bonnie Brown. The Most Improved Player Award went to ..... drum roll ... Mary Westin! Congratulations Ladies!

Adrienne Hotchkiss is heading a committee

to revitalize our Team Play team for next year! Stay tuned!

The afternoon included a return visit from San-ta Claus (aka Ray Hong). He distributed ECCE golf balls to deserving ladies with his entertaining wit and humor. A Second Place tie was between Lauri Bloom and Robin Combie and taking home the First Place award of 5 golf balls was Mary Westin!

Susan Filios voiced our appreciation for all the hard work done by Kelley Spooner to keep our events top notch! Both she and Rich Howarth re-ceived gifts for all their support and commitment to our Ladies. It was then time to say thank you to Gayle Jennings (outgoing Captain) for her out-standing service to our group. She lead us for the past two years with great efficiency and compe-tency! She received a gift of a new golf bag. Happi-ly she turned the Iron Bell over to Barbara Fichtner who announced the new Board:

Trending on Tuesdays in Febru-ary, “Pastrami Everything.” A Deli tradition of curing and brin-

ing meats along with condiments to cre-ate your own unique sandwich or salad starting off with our soup du jour. This new trend comes from the Jewish Delis using traditional spices to make beef pas-trami, including peppercorns, onion, garlic, cloves, and salt. Our offerings will include two brined meats such as the traditional pastrami and pastrami turkey breast, with lots of pickled condiments with seasonal fresh lettuces and locally baked bread.
