Principal’s Corner

Welcome back, I hope every-

one had a restful and peaceful Christmas break. January is a

very busy month for us. Given the projected cold snap,

we want to remind everyone of our Division’s current juris-dictional bus cancellation pro-

cedures. As the procedures have changed, we want to en-

sure parents and guardians have the most up to date in-formation.

As I have stated in previous

newsletters, junior high stu-dents do not have an exam

week in January. While some

teachers are having midterm exams, these are being con-

ducted during regular class time. We do not stop classes for junior high students in

January. The senior high school exam schedule has been released so I encourage

parents to help their student(s) study by providing uninter-

rupted study time at home leading up to and during ex-am week.

Happy new year.

Counsellor’s Corner

A new year! A new decade! Wow, what a start to 2020. Welcome Back!

Grade 12 news:

Grad Picture Retakes are Thursday, Janu-ary 9. If you need one please sign up in the office

If you are struggling with applications to post-secondary schools, please see Mrs. Hart if you need assistance.

Please remember to use your own email account -- not your Buffalo Trail Account for any post-secondary applications, scholarship or financial aid sites.

For Alexander Rutherford Scholarships - application is 1 month prior to attending, for student loan applications usually start in the spring if you are attending a post-secondary school in the fall. For both applications please go to https://studentaid.alberta.ca/

Make sure you have an active MYPASS ac-count. This is where you will receive your di-ploma examination marks and some post-secondary schools are requesting information that can only be generated from an active MY-PASS account. Students who may want to select a re-write option will do this in their MYPASS account. So please enroll today. https://public.education.alberta.ca/PASI/myPass/Welcome/Index Once you begin your login in process there will be a password generated and sent to you via Canada Post mail. Please make sure to check you mail regularly as this password is time-sensitive.

There are many scholarships available to students. Go to the J. R. Robson APP or web-s i t e h t t p : / / j r r o b s o n . b t p s . c a /Scholarships.php and look for the white 1st Place Ribbon which will take you to the schol-arship section.

Please check your school email for infor-mation bulletins.

Timetable changes: The end of January marks the completion of first semester. The J. R. Robson timetable was created based on student demand, so the opportunities to switch classes may be challenging. With this in mind, if you require a timetable change for second semester or need to order materials from Students On-Line course, please contact

Mrs. Polishuk or Mrs. Hart during exam week to check out the possibilities, as we like to have students begin semester 2 in the right classes.

For students who are taking Students On-Line courses, all course material needs to be handed in on January 15, to transported for marking and back for study purposes. All ex-ams must be written by January 15 to en-sure marks are recorded on report cards at the end of the semester. If you will be unable to meet these deadlines, you need to talk to Mrs. Polishuk to make alternate arrange-ments.

As counsellors, we would like to encourage all grade 10/11 students to attend open houses or arrange buddy days at post-secondary institutions, job shadow people in fields that interest them, find part-time em-ployment in areas which they may have ca-reer aspirations, and do career research into potential careers. If you can narrow down the post-secondary institution that is right for you, it is one step further along the career decision-making pathway. This link will give you access to all of the contact information for post-secondary schools in Alberta: https://www.elaa.ab.ca/uploads/pdf/2019/DAG_Poster_2019-2020_PRINT.pdf

For grade 11 students, who are still search-ing for a career path, the Strong Interest Inventory is a tool we use to assist you on your career planning journey. Please see Mrs. Polishuk, Mrs. Hart or your VIBE Coaches: Kerri & Vanessa for more details on how to access this resource.

For Work Experience students please make use of the online format which has been cre-ated to make the evaluation of work experi-ence easier for all. Please see Mrs. Scully or Mrs. Hart if you need additional help getting started in the online environment.

A Message From Your School Mental Health Professional (MHP)

Brain Development: Brain development occurs at an increased rate in adolescence. Each brain develops at its own pace and continues to develop into the twenties. As the brain grows and matures, individuals begin to develop something called “executive functioning skills”. These skills in-clude, but are not limited to, conflict resolu-tion and study skills. Follow these steps to help you children resolve conflict: 1. Calm down - give everyone a chance to take a breather by taking a walk or counting to 10 2. State and understand the problem - en-courage them to use “I” statements to express their feelings 3. Apologize - sincere apology 4. Solution finding - encourage them to speak to each other and to speak honestly 5. Follow up - follow up with your child in re-

gards to the conflict To help your child improve their study habits, please remind them of the following: 1. Have proper diet, hydration and sleep prior to and during studying 2. Sit down with your child and schedule an assigned study time each day 3. Study area should be free from distractions and allow children and youth to feel comforta-ble and remain focused 4. Follow up with your child on important dates, including exams, major assignments, and encourage them to use an agenda to en-sure they are prepared and meeting deadlines Information has been adapted from http://teenmentalhealth.org/. What is a vape? A vape is an electronic smoking device that contains a cartridge of liquid (e-juice) or other forms of nicotine that are heated into a vapor and inhaled by the user. What should parents look for? Parents should watch their child and pay attention to an unusual attachment to a USB stick, sharpie, pen, lipstick, key fob, etc. These items may be electronic cigarettes “disguised” as everyday items.

What is in e-cigarette liquid? Nicotine, which is a highly addictive drug. A combination of water, chemicals and propylene glycol, which is a food preservative and is in antifreeze and theatre fog. Heating and vaporizing chemicals in the cartridges creates other sometimes toxic chemicals can cause harmful health effects. Added chemicals for flavor may not be safe to inhale and may irritate the lungs and airways over time.

Vaping is not harmless

Vaping can increase your exposure to harmful chemicals and lead to nicotine addiction. The short and long term health effects are unknown, but recent reports are showing significant respiratory and health effects such as lung failure, seizures and even death.

Although rare, some vaping devices may catch fire or explode, leading to burns or injuries.

Talk to your teen about vaping

Alberta Health Services recommends talking to your teen about electronic cigarettes (vape) early, even as young as age 10.

Discuss the facts about exposure and chemicals as well as nicotine addiction.

Correct misconceptions in a calm manner and take time to listen.
