“What Does This Mean?” Matthew 2:1-12

We have all heard the account of the Magi (or Wise Men) before. Sometimes familiarity with an account can cause it to lose its effectiveness in transmitting what is important. So this morning, I want you to listen. I want you to hear. I want you to constantly ask “What does this mean?” The gifts… the Baby… The foreigners… Mary and Joseph… what does this all mean? royal son! C: May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor

righteousness! C: May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give

deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor!

P: May they fear you while the sun endures, and as long as the moon, throughout all generations!

C: May he be like rain that falls on the mown grass, like showers that water the earth!

P: In his days may the righteous flourish, and peace abound, till the moon be no more!

C: May he have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth!

P: May desert tribes bow down before him, and his enemies lick the dust!

C: May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands render him tribute; may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts!
