iCare: we care, you care! Our iPad scheme, although still in its infancy, has changed many things within school for both students and staff. The majority of iPad owners have been very diligent in both the use and the care and consideration required for keeping their iPad safe and secure. To date we have only experienced a 9% breakage rate – and understandably the majority of these have been screen breakages. It is important that students are aware that they are responsible for an expensive item of equipment and there is a need to take great care with it. So far there has been only a limited amount of damage but we are getting a small number of repeat cases which our insurance company will not continue to cover. Please be aware that if you have reported damage to your son or daughter’s iPad the following now applies: 1. On the first occasion that the iPad has been damaged, it will be repaired/replaced but returned to you in a heavy duty protective case. The iPad should always be used within this case. 2. On the second occasion of reporting damage to an iPad you will be responsible for a £50 charge that will go towards its repair. 3. On the third occasion of reporting damage you will be asked to pay for the damage in full and can choose between the 2 following options: a. Opt out of the scheme and the iPad can only be used in school – it can be collected first thing in the morning and returned after the final lesson. b. Remain in the scheme but commit to contribute £50 for each future claim for repair of the iPad following any future damage.

iCare: we care, you care!

It is important that students are aware that they are responsible

for an expensive item of equipment and there is a need to take

great care with it. So far there has been only a limited amount of

damage but we are getting a small number of repeat cases which

our insurance company will not continue to cover.

Please be aware that if you have reported damage to your son

or daughter’s iPad the following now applies:

1. On the first occasion that the iPad has been damaged, it will be repaired/replaced but returned to you

in a heavy duty protective case. The iPad should always be used within this case.

2. On the second occasion of reporting damage to an iPad you will be responsible for a £50 charge that

will go towards its repair.

3. On the third occasion of reporting damage you will be asked to pay for the damage in full and can

choose between the 2 following options:

a. Opt out of the scheme and the iPad can only be used in school – it can be collected first thing in

the morning and returned after the final lesson.

b. Remain in the scheme but commit to contribute £50 for each future claim for repair of the iPad

following any future damage.

The majority of students have been fantastic ambassadors for using and taking care of their iPads and we appreciate your support in encouraging all students to maintain this standard. Accidents do happen, and the nature of the iPad means that breakage is invariably the screen, but we still hope this is a rare occurrence. Remember any damage or theft must be reported within 2 weeks of it occurring.

Careers Fair – Join Us! Wednesday 19th March, 1pm It is a significant number of years since we have held a Careers Fair, therefore this is an excellent opportunity to promote an organisation and raise its profile to our students. The Fair will be aimed at Years 10, 11 and 12. If you think this is for you and you would like your business or organisation represented please contact [email protected] or phone on 01943 608424.

Taster Day Last week saw our Post 16 team involved in their annual Year 11-12 Taster Day. The day requires excellent organisation and thorough supervision alongside time and energy to ensure all IGS students, as well as our external applicants, get the most out of the day. It was an important day that showcased a wide range of opportunities available, so that all students are well prepared and enthusiastic for the next steps. It was also good to see not only the academic sessions, but also the Pathways initiative with the College and apprenticeship inputs. The feedback on the day from students was very positive – so here’s to informed, positive decisions and a high quality 2014-15 entry!

Auction of Promises Our annual Auction of Promises is a real highlight in our fundraising efforts – a great opportunity to bid for something that money just can’t buy, as well as helping to raise funds for your school. Before the bidding can start in earnest and the gavel falls, we need as many different kinds of lots as possible. So if you can contribute a fancy sports car for the weekend, a villa in the South of France, a meal cooked by Gordon Ramsey – that would be amazing; if not then we are more than happy to take your generous gifts of fine wines, foods, health and beauty treatments and dog walking!

If you feel you can contribute please contact the PTA on [email protected] or via twitter @IGSPTA . Donations can be brought into school and handed in at reception. We need your help to make this a success – even before the bidding starts in a few weeks’ time; the deadline for donations is 7th February.

Summer Exams Individual Exam Entry pro-formas will be issued next week; this will include all exam entries as requested by staff. Students must check forms to ensure they have at least one entry for each subject they are studying. The signed forms should be returned to the Exams Office or their tutor the following day. School pays for initial entries and the Exams Office will submit your GCSE / AS & A2 exam entries to the exam boards during the following week. Any problems, students should liaise with Exam Office staff.

Top Tips for Safer Internet Day Safer Internet Day 2014 will take place on 11th February 2014, with the theme 'Let's create a better internet together'. The day offers the opportunity to focus on both the creative things that children and young people are doing online, as well as the role and responsibility that all stakeholders have in helping to create a better internet. Safer Internet Day is organised in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre in February of each year to promote the safe and responsible use of online technology and mobile phones for children and young people. Here are their top 5 tips of creating a better internet with young people:

1. Talk to your child about their favourite websites. Starting a conversation on a positive foot can lead nicely into a chat about online safety.

2. If your child loves to use social networking sites, teach them about protecting their personal information by thinking about what they are sharing and who they are sharing it with. Show them how to use privacy settings, and how to block and report – and advise them to only accept friend requests from people they know in real life.

3. Remind your child that showing respect for others online is just as important as showing it offline. Encourage them to think before they post and encourage them to show positive behaviour online.

4. There are lots of ways you can advise your child about cyber bullying, if they are worried remind them to save the evidence and to always tell an adult they trust if something upsets them online.

5. There are ways in which you can help to prevent your child from seeing inappropriate content online. Have you considered parental controls and filtering in your home and also on your children’s portable internet enabled devices?

Sharing Success Congratulations to Cameron Herbert (12JHB) and Andrew Lorimer (12DGW) who played in the Ben Rhydding Hockey Club under 18 boys’ team that qualified last weekend for the National Outdoor Championships Quarter Finals. The team were playing away at Bowden Hockey Club with Cameron in goal and Andrew playing his outfield position. They played very well with Andrew scoring after 50 seconds to settle the nerves for the boys. Cameron made many fine saves to deny Bowden a goal until the latter stages when they pulled one back. The boys won 3-1 and will play Saffron Walden away in the quarter-finals on March 2nd. The previous weekend the team came 6th in the National Indoor Championships, which was an excellent effort. Good luck to the boys and their team!

Well done to or U12 athletics team who competed on Tuesday afternoon. The team competed in a number of indoor athletic events including: sprinting, indoor shot, javelin, speed bounce, standing long jump, triple jump, vertical jump and the relay event. The Year 7 boys finished in 4th place and the Year 7 girls stormed to a substantial lead to take 1st place. IGS won the overall team event. The girls’ team qualified for the Bradford U12 Indoor Athletics Finals which take place at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre on 11th February. Good luck girls!

Well done to our Year 7 and 8 A and B hockey teams who were in action against Bingley Grammar this week. The final scores were: Year 7 A team drew 1-1, Year 7 B team drew 1-1, Year 8 A team won 1-0, and Year 8 B team won 7-1

Congratulations to our Year 10 rugby team who played Bingley Grammar on Tuesday night. They had a fantastic match and had to cap the score at 50-0. Our Year 7 rugby team played Beckfoot on Thursday and won 30-40.

Well done to our Year 11 rugby team who beat Harrogate Grammar School in the ¼ finals of the Yorkshire cup on Wednesday 10-7. It was a really good game which we dominated but there was a close finish!

Good luck to Desideria Sardelli (10GS) in the district final of the Rotary Club Cookery Competition which is being held at Betty's Cookery School in Harrogate on Monday evening.

Well done to our U14A netball team who enjoyed a thrilling victory over South Craven on Thursday, they came back convincingly in the 2nd half to win 7-6. Player of the match was Niamh Hyslop (8ADM). The U13B and U14B also played this week but were defeated in their matches against ‘A’ team opponents. Aisling O’Neill (8JP) and Mackenzie Shearn-Miller (9JLF) received player of the match.

We hope you will join our 100+ students from Years 7-13 on this journey. Tickets are £5 and £3 (concessions) and are available from Reception.

The Seven Ages of Man "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages." Jaques 'As You Like It' William Shakespeare (Act 2 Sc7)

GCSE Overview

It is important for students, staff and parents to have the overview of what GCSE commitments Year 11 have over the next few weeks. We have provided them all with this information in the form of a bookmark for their planners. Please see the calendar below.

Career of the week: Fashion Designer

The Work: fashion designers design clothing and fashion ranges, you could work in high fashion or designer ready to wear fashion, you could also work in high street fashion or specialise in particular types of clothing – men’s, children’s or sportswear. The work would normally involve:

Working to design instructions (known as a brief).

Analysing or predicting trends in fabrics, colours and shapes

Producing concept and mood boards (photos, fabric pieces and colour samples).

Estimating costs for materials and manufacture.

Making in-house presentations to finance departments and merchandisers.

Spellcheck Alert! In the next Literacy Fortnightly Focus we are asking students to take more care with the spelling of ‘homophones’. These are words which sound the same, but have different meanings depending on how they are spelt. Examples this fortnight include: your/you’re; there/their/they’re; of/off; to/too/two; where/wear/were; hear/here; which/witch. Do you have what it takes to complete the ‘Homophone Challenge’? Look out for the answers next week.

Activity: Fill in the blanks with the correct homophones from the list above. Use the starts of the words to

help you. ‘W do you think y going?’ asked the teacher who was struggling to h . ‘I was just going t the toilet. And my mate wanted to come t .So that makes t of us.’ ‘Well you can go at break. So get back t .’ ‘Over h ?’ ‘No, over t .’ ‘Now back to the lesson. What sort o clothes did the evacuees w in World War T ? Don’t forget, a lot o t possessions would have been left behind. Isn’t anyone going to say anything? Don’t be put o .’ ‘They probably wore t best clothes to impress the families they w staying with.’ ‘Quite right. They would have t decide w clothes t take and w to leave behind. Well that’s the end o the lesson, who is dressing as a w this Halloween?’

You will often work with garment technologists, sample machinists and manufacturers (often based overseas) to make sure designs are reproduced accurately.

Entry Requirements: you will usually need a Degree or Foundation Degree to be a fashion designer. Prior to this you will need either A’ Levels (Art & Design or Design & Technology are useful) or a BTEC Level 3 qualification – Art & Design, Fashion Design etc. After this it is important to do your research when choosing a degree. Check carefully which areas are covered on the course and what links the fashion department has with industry. You will also need a good portfolio of work.

Training and Development: you will often start as a design assistant before working your way up to full designer role. You can develop your knowledge and skills throughout your career by taking short courses in particular aspects of the fashion business.

Pay: starting salaries can be between £18 and £22,000 a year. With experience and increased responsibility, earnings can rise to between £25 and £40,000 a year. Senior designers can earn up to £60,000 a year and more.
