What is National Catholic Schools Week?

Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2017 is January 29 - February 4. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2017 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.

Reboot! Live! on February 1st is sold out. Saint James Church is asking

everyone attending to please leave large bags/backpacks at home for security reasons. Thank you for your cooperation!

BOY SCOUT SUNDAY All Boy Scouts of the

New From the Office of Faith Formation . . . “True freedom, freedom worthy of the sons of God, is that freedom which most truly safeguards the

dignity of the human person. It is stronger than any violence or injustice. Such is the freedom which has always been desired by the Church, and which she holds most dear. It is the sort of freedom which the Apostles resolutely claimed for themselves. The Christian apologists defended it in their writings; thousands of martyrs consecrated it with their blood." ~ Pope Leo XIII (Libertas Praestantissimum 30)

  • ~ 7 ~

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time~ January 29, 2017

How many people we know who spend their time pursuing what they do not have. Those without work read the want ads, write lengthy resumes and try to connect with someone to help them. Those with health issues look for a second opinion or find a specialist to address their needs. Young people look to guidance counselors at school to assist them in making a career choice. But how few of us earnestly and eagerly seek the Lord. We presume God’s presence, but how rarely do we set out to strengthen our relationship with Him. Do I work for justice, am I humble and dependent before the Lord?

The Lord asks me to ‘act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly before my God.’ The Beatitudes in the gospel today will help us to see our lives as the Lord looks upon us, not in anger but with love. I want to be poor in spirit, putting God first. I want to be humble, work for justice, walk the way of holiness and care for those in need. All disciples are called to be people of the beatitudes and look for ways to put them into practice.

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 5, 2017

First Reading: Isaiah 58:7-10 This reading is a vigorous exhortation from the prophet Isaiah to lead lives of active charity and generosity. He promises that the Lord will be our “dawn,” our “rear guard,” our “light” if we share our bread, shelter the homeless, and clothe the naked. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Paul tells the Corinthians that he and they must not rely on the so-called “wisdom” of secular teaching and philosophy but on the power of the Spirit. Gospel: Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus reminds the disciples and all Christians that they carry special responsibilities to be “the salt of the earth.” They must not hide their light but show their goodness to all.

“Seek the Lord, all you humble of the earth, who have observed his law; seek justice, seek humility; perhaps you may be sheltered on the day of the Lord’s anger. But I will have as a remnant in your midst a people humble and lowly… How blest are the poor in spirit…”
