Join us for this Great Adventure study on the prophets, presented by Thomas Smith. Each week you will come to know a prophet from Scripture and learn how his message sheds light on our faith and our lives. This study places the Old Testament prophets in context of salvation history, making their personalities and contexts easy to follow, understand and relate to our lives.

Join us for “The Prophets: Messengers of God’s Mercy” starting January 24, between the Masses (9:30-10:45 a.m.) or the following Monday, January 25 (7:00 to 8:00 p.m.), for 10 powerful weeks of study.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 24, 2016

TEEN CLOSET CLOTHING DRIVE: Have you ever wondered what is behind that beautifully

painted door on the small shed at the far end of the parking lot? Wonder no more! That door leads to a wonderful teen ministry here at Church of the Holy Family, The Teen Closet Clothing Exchange Ministry. The closet clothing exchange provides free, gently worn, comfortable and stylish clothing to local area teens. It is staffed by our teen youth group coordinator, Jeff Mingin, our wonderful teen youth group and parent volunteers. The ministry relies not only on the efforts of these dedicated individuals but on the generous donation of clothing from parishioners and local families in the community.

Currently the closet is getting low on cold weather items and is in need of winter coats, girls and boys long sleeve shirts, sweaters and hoodies in sizes small, medium, large and extra-large in girls. The closet is also getting low on warm weather footwear for both boys and girls in teen styles and sizes. If you or anyone you know have these items that you or they are no longer in need of, please consider donating them to our ministry. If you do not have any teen clothing to donate but would like to help the closet, we are always in need of new, packaged, and unopened girls and boys underwear and socks of all sizes. When deciding what to donate please keep in mind that our closet is very small and we have limited storage so we are only looking for gently worn, teen size (no young children’s sizes please) clothing that has no visible stains, tears or holes in them. Please also keep in mind that we are only in need of teen style clothing and footwear, no women’s and men’s dress and/or casual attire is needed.

Clothing may be dropped off at the parish during normal business hours during the two weeks of February 1 through February 12. Thank you in advance. God Bless You!

THE YEAR OF MERCYThird Sunday in Ordinary Time

When he announced this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis highlighted today’s Gospel episode, in which Jesus proclaims in his hometown synagogue his Spirit-anointed mission to fulfill the promises of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus’ mission then, says Pope Francis, is our mission now as Jesus’ disciples this Jubilee Year of Mercy: to bring glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, freedom to the oppressed, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord, a year of God’s mercy. Pope Francis challenges us to translate Jesus’ mission to contemporary needs: to console by word and deed those materially or spiritually poor, to liberate those bound by modern society’s new forms of slavery, to open the eyes of those blinded by their own self-interest, and to restore human dignity to all those from whom it has been stolen. To act with mercy in a spirit of joy!

THANK YOU:

To Our Dear Friends at Church of the Holy Family,

We are so thankful for all the wonderful gifts you purchased and provided for our residents at Bay Pointe Medical and Rehabilitation Center for Christmas of 2015. Every year we are so deeply touched by your kindness and generosity. The outpouring of love you extend to us during the holiday season, as well as throughout the year, is greatly appreciated more than you will ever know. From our family to yours, best wishes in the New Year, and may God bless each and every one of you. Sincerely, Bay Pointe Staff and Residents

“CARE FOR OUR EARTH:”As a follow-up on last week’s article regarding our connectedness with all creation, this truth was addressed by the leaders of about 190 nations at the Paris Climate Conference this past December. Some attention was focused on those people least responsible for climate change, like the indigenous peoples from Africa to the Arctic, and yet they are the most impact and the least able to afford the high costs of adaptation. How just is that? The catastrophic consequences of unabated climate change affect the most vulnerable among humankind. The richer, more developed countries (that built their wealth on a carbon economy) need to pay into a Green Climate Fund to assist these poorer nations in their becoming a more clean energy economy while simultaneously moving their populations out of poverty. So, on an individual level, our actions, our decisions regarding our care of the Earth do have an affect in some way on people and other creatures throughout the globe because of our connectedness. We all form the web of life. (This article is based on an article written by Glenn Besa of the Sierra Club.)

WINTER WATCH MINISTRYAND THE FAMILY

We will once again host about 60-80 friends for shelter during this Winter season February 24-March 2. Winter Watch Ministry is looking for a few families who would like to participate on HF Family Night Thursday, February 25. All entailed is: preparing a meal, set the tables (just like at home), and clean up (like at home: everyday life). If your family is interested in participating, please contact Connie Nowak at [email protected].

“Christian families are missionary families. …They are missionary in everyday life, in their doing everyday things, as they bring to everything the salt and the leaven of faith! Keeping the faith in families and bringing to everyday things the salt and the leaven of faith.” – Pope Francis

COLUMBARIUM: There are Columbarium niches available. The cost is $2,000.00 for a double niche. Contact Terry McElroy at 481-5702.

“BELONGING:”At this time, with so much tension and unrest in our world,

we think it is important that we go deep in our spiritual lives and see how we can be people of peace, justice, and love in our world. Belonging wakes us up to our Christian call to be people of peace and justice. In prayer, conversation, and action, “Belonging” helps us to internalize and live out these Gospel values.

“Belonging” is a small group process developed by the JustFaith Ministries. It is an invitation to transform and deepen our spiritual lives by expanding our hearts and minds… awakening us to our connectedness and unity with all creation. It is an invitation…to live deeply and fully by making room for wonder, wounds and mystery… to listen carefully to Scripture and each other… to draw the world down into ourselves and hold it in prayer. There is a prayerful, reflective tone to each session… holy listening … sharing of a book and several articles… prayers, exercises, and questions that sometimes focus on disturbing social realities.

“Belonging” is a shared spiritual, transformative journey… a structured opportunity to practice living deeply and loving broadly.

Two hour sessions, plus one immersion experience (going to the margins of society) beginning Thursday, January 28, 9:30-11:30 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church. For further information, please contact Renee McCarthy at 486-3375 or [email protected].
