CORPUS CHRISTI COMMUNITY

Continued on Page 7...

Archbishop Naumann’s Annual Appeal Homily Dear Friends in Our Lord Jesus Christ, Every one of us is in this Church today because in some way we have heard the call of Jesus to be His disciple and His friend. Some of us have had dramatic encounters with the Divine, similar to the experience of the young man Samuel hearing the voice of the Lord calling his name. Some of us are here at Mass because like the disciples in the Gospel we have had our own John the Baptist. Someone we respect as both wise and holy, who pointed us to Jesus. Probably many of us are here because just as Peter was led to Jesus by Andrew, his brother, we have come to know Our Lord through our family. Every weekend in our 100 plus Catholic Churches in Northeast Kansas, there are some individuals who are participating in Mass for the very first time. Welcome! We are honored to have you praying with us today. I pray that through your experience of the Mass Our Lord touches your heart in a special way with His love. I am confident that Jesus is beckoning you to be His disciple and friend. What a gift it is to know Jesus and to be part of His family - the Church. This past year, I read several books written by former atheists who through God's grace now share our Catholic Faith. In her book, Something Other Than God, Jennifer Fulwiler described growing up in a home where her Father was an atheist and her Mother an agnostic. As a young girl of 11, she recounts searching for fossils in a creek bed with her Father on her Grandparents ranch in Texas. Jennifer had done this many times previously with her Father. However, this particular morning as she stared at a fossil of an ancient living creature, it suddenly occurred to her that someday she would die. Someday she would be a fossil. That is if she was fortunate enough when she died to fall into some soft mud. Then, she might become a fossil. Otherwise, no one would ever know that she existed. As a result of this new realization, Jennifer became very sad. She was not only fearful about the inevitability of her own death, but she began to wonder: Did anything about her life really matter? Why should she do any homework or try in school, since she was just heading towards non-existence? Then, she realized she better complete her Math homework or she would face undesirable consequences from her parents and teacher. Jennifer could distract herself with activity and tasks of everyday life, but periodically this realization of her own mortality and the meaninglessness of life resurfaced. At these moments, her depression over the absurdity of life returned. In the midst of one of these funks as a young adult, in desperation she uttered the atheist prayer: God, if you are real, then make yourself known to me. For the first time, Jennifer had an experience of the Divine Presence. She was enveloped by a tremendous peace and a sense of being loved. This experience launched her on a mission to find the source of that peace and love which she had tasted for the very first time. To her surprise, her quest to find God led her to the Catholic Church - the very last place in the world she ever imagined herself finding a spiritual home. Today, Jennifer Fulwiler is an ardent Catholic who hosts a daily radio program on the Catholic Channel available on Satellite Radio. What a gift our Christian Faith! We not only believe in a God who created the cosmos, but that this same Lord of the Universe desires to share His life, eternal life with us. Through God's revelation of Himself in Jesus, we discover a God who loves us and desires friendship with us. As Catholics we believe that the same Lamb of God that John the Baptist pointed out to those first disciples will become physically present to us in a few moments under the sacramental signs of bread and wine. We believe that Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity, desires to share Himself with us again in Holy Communion in order to nourish the divine life that was given to us through the waters of baptism. For those of us, who have grown up in Catholic families where Faith in Jesus was part of the air we breathed, it is difficult for us to understand how dark, cold and meaningless life is apart from God. Having experienced the gift of friendship with Jesus, we are called like Andrew in the Gospel to go and bring others to experience Our Lord's love for them. We have a responsibility to make His love present in our world. Each year at this time, I invite every member of the Archdiocese to unite in common cause by supporting the annual Call To Share Campaign that supports so many of our ministries in their efforts to make Our Lord's love real and tangible in the lives of so many. Call To Share funded ministries also help us fulfill our mission both to grow as disciples of Jesus and to make disciples for Jesus. A donation to Call To Share helps to 1) form our future priests and deacons, 2) prepare couples for marriage and through the Joyful Marriage Project help those already married to grow more deeply in love, 3) protect unborn children and provide hospice care for those approaching death, 4) feed the hungry and welcome the refugee, 5) provide respite care for parents

Mission Statement: “With Christ as our teacher, the Corpus Christi Catholic Community will prepare students academically, socially, and spiritually to be lifelong learners in a faith-filled environment.”

CORPUS CHRISTI CATHOLIC SCHOOL EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMICS DISTINCTION IN DISCIPLESHIP 2016 Kansas Governor’s Achievement Award Recipient

National Catholic School WeekJan 28thFeb 2ndCatholic schools offer academic excellence and faith-filled education for students nationwide. National test scores, high school graduation rates, college attendance and other data show that Catholic schools frequently outperform schools in both the public and private sectors. While some pulbic schools are challenged by declining enrollments and school closures, the good news is that there is a strong demand and enthusiasm for Catholic schools. Thirty-two percent of Catholic schools have waiting lists for admission and new schools are opening across the country. Our parish school will celebrate the week with an opening liturgy on Sunday, January 28th at 10:00am. Following this liturgy, the entire parish is invited to walk through our Education Center and see this amazing facility that you all built for our children. The Open House will be followed by Chili and Bingo in the Gymnasium. Please join us for the festivities. Grandparents’ day will also be celebrated in the school on February 1st, as all of our children invite these loved heroes to join them for the morning in school, at liturgy and for lunch. Car raffle tickets, benefiting the parish school will be sold at both events.

20182019 Enrollment Now Open To AllOn January 11th, preschool-8th grade enrollment opened to everyone. Current school families will receive priority placement on all positions until February 12th. After this date, parish and community Preschool-8th enrollment applicants will be placed according to when enrollment was received. You can enroll and pay the deposit on our school website at www.cccparish.org/enroll.

Rite of Christian Initiation of AdultsRCIA brings together a wide variety of people. Some come with much knowledge and experience in living the faith, and others come with little of either. All are welcome! Catechumens are those who have not yet been baptized, and will receive the sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. Candidates for Full Communion are those baptized in a Christian denomination, and will receive the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist during one of several opportunities throughout the year; February 11th being our next celebration of Full Communion. We encourage every Catholic to participate, to learn more, to renew your faith. We meet on Thursdays, 7:00 - 8:30 pm. If you are a baptized Catholic who, for some reason, have not received the Sacrament of Confirmation, contact Sister Doris. • Topics: January 25: Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism and Confirmation

Family Formation Our Family Formation program combines children’s faith formation and adult faith formation for parents. It is a great way for parents to refresh their faith while experiencing presentations on the same topics as their children. This program is for families whose children attend any of our public/private/home schools, pre-Kn - 6th grade. Child care is provided for children younger than 3. • Next classes: February 7 and 28. Topic: Anointing of the Sick

First Communion Mark your calendars: For families in Family Formation:

• First Communion Review (for children and parents), Wednesday, March 14, 6:30 pm. For all families with children preparing for First Communion:

• 1st Communion Retreat: Saturday, April 7, 9:00 - noon • 1st Communion: Sunday, April 8, 10:00 am

To kick it off, our Corpus Christi high school youth group and St. John’s youth group are teaming up to help serve at LINK on January 28th from 12:40-2:20 pm. A reminder to all high school youth group parents to please sign up for a day to provide a meal for the group. with a disabled child and quality skilled nursing care for the elderly, 6) provide faith formation for Catholic school teachers and transformative religious experiences for youth at Prairie Star Ranch, 7) assist college students grow in their Faith and evangelize young adults 8) shelter the homeless and rescue individuals from pay day loan debt, 9) teach financial literacy and help individuals develop skills that will empower them to break free from the cycle of poverty. This is not a comprehensive list but just a sampling of some of the fruits of this annual appeal. In considering your donation to this year's Call To Share Campaign, I ask you to first ponder the many ways in which God has blest you. Most especially, thank God for the gift of Faith. Thank Our Lord for the peace, hope, joy and meaning that His love brings to your life. I ask you then to make a gift that expresses the depth of your gratitude to God. Make a gift not just from your surplus, but one that requires a sacrifice. Through the waters of Baptism, we received a share in the life of Jesus. Through our Confirmation we received a share in Our Lord's mission- to make His love known to the entire world. We all have a calling, a vocation, to make disciples for Jesus. When you receive Our Lord in Holy Communion today, thank Him for the gift of your Faith and the gift of His friendship. Let us each do our best so that no one thinks the most they can hope for is to become a fossil! Together, let us grow as disciples of Jesus and make disciples for Jesus!

his Annual Appeal: A Call to Share (ACTS). The planning for this

annual appeal is a year long process of people coming together and

looking at the needs of the people that we are called to serve as the Church

of Northeast Kansas. The year long planning process is not about how to

increase the amount of dollars secured by the appeal, but rather a constant

look at the needs that are present among the people that are served by our

parishes and by the offices of the Archdiocese that work tirelessly in ministry

with children and the elderly; with people of color and those with disabilities;

with young couples preparing for a life together and all those who find

themselves marginalized in our society. This was Christ’s call to all disciples.

O ur call to Stewardship each year in the parish’s annual drive is a reminder to all of us that we are responsible for

the gifts that God has bestowed on each of us. And as

stewards of God’s gifts we are called to return a portion

of them. Our annual Stewardship drive asks all parishioners to

work toward a five percent return of your financial gifts to the

parish itself, to offer another one percent toward the annual

appeal by the Archbishop through ACTS, and to use the

remaining four percent toward the charities that are also close

to your heart. This is what Stewardship as a disciple of Jesus

calls us to: a life of trust and relationship with the God who has

bestowed these gifts. It is not a simple request, but one that demands a look inside of ourselves to find the trust and the

faith to respond when we are called upon.

I t is easy, and often a favorite pastime, to look at anything that comes with the Archdiocesan name tacked onto it as

something outside of who we are. An “us” versus “them” mentality sometimes guides our thoughts when we are asked

for dollars or time at the Archdiocesan level. “I would rather keep my dollars here,” is often a thought, or “I don’t

know what they do with all that money.” I always address this thinking by telling people, “We are “them!” There is no

Corpus Christi Catholic Community without the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. And the dollars that we offer to this

annual appeal benefit all of us in two ways. First, Msgr. Krische and I are priests of the Archdiocese and were educated in

part by the funds that come from this annual appeal. Right now we are educating seminarians that will in the future serve

this parish, or other parishes that you may find yourself part of in this Archdiocese. Second, many of the programs and

ministries funded by this annual appeal directly affect hundreds of our families. The School Office sets the curriculum and

supports our parish school, the Office of Evangelization does the same for our Children’s Religious Education program.

Marriage and Family Life helps in setting our young couples on the path of marriage, the Youth Office oversees the work

done at Prairie Star Ranch, our youth camp. In the same light, all those other offices and ministries do the work that we

are all called to do, and they do it in our name.

M aybe it is indeed the fact that the appeal comes from another place that doesn’t sit right with us. If that is the

case, let me bring it down to a local level: Monsignor and I are asking that you prayerfully consider a gift to this

annual appeal! It is an important part of our ministry and our call to follow Christ. As you read Archbishop Naumann’s message on Call to Share on page 3, know that we will all receive a letter asking for financial support for his

annual appeal. Please respond quickly by mailing your gift or bringing it directly to church and placing in the collection

basket. All gifts are greatly appreciated, and everyone can offer something. Thanks for your gift and for being such an

important part of our parish family! -Fr. Mick & Msgr. Vince

Care Bags for Homeless

The Catholic Women’s Group gathered in late December to celebrate the Christmas season, while keeping in mind those who are in need. Women donated items to put in the Care Bags including such things as gloves, hand-warmers, granola bars, bottled water, and perhaps a note of encouragement. Each person took several bags, prepared to offer a bit of help to someone encountered on a street corner or other place around town.

We will celebrate Catholic Schools Week with our parish school next Sunday at the 10:00 am liturgy. Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. The week is January 28 - February 3. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2018 is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” Corpus Christi will celebrate CSW with various activities! Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to you ng peop le and i t s contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. We hope you will be able to share in some of the activities.
