Christmas has come and gone. When all is said and done, having time now to look back on all our parish has been able to do for others, I want to share the good news with you. Despite the challenges of the pandemic we all have faced, our community was very generous and helped make Christmas much merrier for many others who otherwise might have gone without. Contributions to our Sharing Tree resulted in

caring for about 175 families that we supported with gift cards. Folks were so generous this year, we were also able to help 30 families at A House in Austin and 17 residents at SisterHouse. Parishioners again responded generously to provide a Christmas celebration for the homeless folks at Housing Forward and the Franciscan Outreach Shelter in Pilsen. A donation was also made to the Fraternite Notre Dame Sisters as they were unable to hold their Christmas bake sale after Masses this year. Our Prayer Shawl Ministry made scarves for the girls at Mercy Home as well as for the Mercy Mission in Texas for those entering the US at the border. The Family Mass Community also continued their Christmas Dinner and Gifts outreach to the St. Pius Community in Pilsen. I received a lovely letter from a parishioner who was very involved in opening and moving A House in Austin forward. The letter described the generosity of the St. Giles Community. CCW’s coat drive provided coats and accessories to the families they serve. Religious Ed provided books, bookbags and stuffed animals. The Just Friends group donated funds for art supplies for families at Christmas. Parishioners donated time to help with yard work, painting and moving. The support of St. Giles has been essential. As you can see, our parish stepped up to help the most in need around us. This is a powerful reminder that in Jesus’s birth and our baptism into the life of Christ we are given the ability to exercise our authority to cast away darkness in our world by whatever quiet good we can do for others. And on top of all this, members of the parish were also generous at home. Our Christmas collection to-date has reached $85,000. Our pre-COVID budget was $95,000. THANK YOU ALL for the good works you have done for the parish and others in need. We are blessed… and our blessing has extended to others. With you a Christian. For you a priest.

Month’s Mind Mass this weekend in honor of Fr. Thomas Dore

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Pastor Emeritus, Rev. Thomas M. Dore, due to complications from Covid-19. Fr. Dore served St. Giles as Pastor from 1994 until 2009. Although Fr. Dore’s sister, Alanna Dore, is planning a memorial service for the summer of 2021 at St. Giles, the Parish family will also gather to remember him with what is called a “Month’s Mind” Mass. This weekend, Sunday, January 17, is the one-month anniversary of his death. We will offer a special Mass to remember and pray for Fr. Dore at 4:00 p.m. Reservations are required. Please see the sign-up on our website, stgilesparish.org, or call the Parish Center during business hours at 708-383-3430 if you would like to join us. There is a Memorial for Fr. Dore displayed in the gathering area of the church. If you would like to leave a card for his sisters, you can do so in the basket that is provided next to his picture. Or, you can drop a card off at the Rev. Thomas Dore Parish Center. We will be sure to collect them and forward them on to his sisters.

fundraiser for Fraternite Notre Dame

By Chicago Trivia Guys

SATURDAY, JANUARY 30 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Join us for a fun evening of trivia on Zoom and a chance to raise money for a valuable faith community, Fraternite Notre Dame! Your purchase of a Zoom connection will enable you to play the trivia game from the comfort and safety of your living room or kitchen table. You and your family members can play as a solo unit,

or you can be grouped with people in other households to form a team! Thanks to the Zoom "Breakout Rooms", after we read each question, you will have two to three minutes to discuss the answer with your remote teammates. Then we will bring everyone back into the Main Session where your team captain will submit the answer within the Zoom chat function. It's a fun way to connect (or perhaps re-connect) with people while playing a trivia game! We will also conduct a 50/50 raffle at the end of the event. Anyone is welcome to purchase any number of raffle tickets in support of Fraternite Notre Dame. Please join us as we raise funds for this great organization!

Our Weekly Sunday Offertory For Fiscal Year July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021

Thank you to those who continue to support St. Giles Parish. The past week’s Offertory was slightly above budget due to school families and parishioners offering their year-end donations. Your faithfulness and generosity throughout this pandemic are both greatly appreciated and critical to maintain and operate all we do. We could not be here without you! Donation statements for 2020 will be mailed by the end of January.

2:1 Empower Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship Matching Donation Program Begins December 1 The Archdiocese of Chicago has once again secured matching donors for the Empower Illinois Scholarship Program. St. Giles will receive an additional $2 for every dollar that you contribute between December 1, 2020 and January 20, 2021 (when funds typically run out). Here's how the program works:

REGISTER with the State of Illinois at mytax.illinois.gov, unless you already have an online account. It usually takes 10-14 days to receive a letter with the ID number required to set up an account, so click on the "Sign up Now!" button in the Login box to start the process as soon as possible.

RESERVE your tax credit for the current calendar year (2020 if you donate in December and 2021 if you donate in January). Once your account is set up, log into your online account at mytax.illinois.gov (Empowerillinois.org will eventually take you to the same page.). Click on the link to your individual account under the "Accounts" tab. Then, under "I Want to" in the top right corner of the page, select "Contribute to Invest in Kids". Navigate through the form, selecting Cook County, Empower Illinois as the scholarship granting organization, and the amount you will be donating (to all schools). You will have the opportunity to select St. Giles (and any additional schools) when you make your donation. You will then receive your Contribution Authorization Certificate under your mytax.illinois.gov account correspondence tab almost immediately.

DONATE: Make your donation between December 1, 2020 and January 20, 2021 (So that we can get our 2:1 matching funds).

You will receive 75% of your donation that can be used as a tax credit on your Illinois tax bill. Last year, we were able to secure $50,000 in matching funds due to our generous donors which helped 17 children in need! Our goal this year is to secure the full $100,000 in matching funds available to each school. Contact Michele Bibbey, Business Manager at St. Giles School at [email protected] with any questions.

Spiritual Classics Book Discussion

at Ascension Ascension Catholic Church in Oak Park invites you to a Spiritual Classics Discussion over Zoom on Tuesday, February 2, at 8:00 p.m. on The Way of a Pilgrim. The Way of a Pilgrim is an anonymous 19th-century Russian work, recounting the narrator's journey as a mendicant pilgrim practicing the Jesus Prayer while traveling through Ukraine, Russia, and Siberia. The pilgrim visits churches and monasteries to try and understand how to “pray without ceasing.” His travels lead him to growth in spiritual understanding. Free copies of the book are available online. For more information on how to obtain the book and to sign up, please go to www.ascensionoakpark.com/apps/pages/athome.

ParishLifeDear St. Giles Parish, The St. Giles Prayer Shawl Ministers have continued to create, bless, and distribute prayer shawls throughout the pandemic. There are a large number and variety of shawls, lap blankets and a few scarves available at the Parish Center for those suffering or for those celebrating a joyous event. To receive a shawl, call the Parish Center and leave a message. One of the staff members will return your call and set up a time to meet you. If that will not work for you, let the staff member know and one of the Prayer Shawl Ministers will plan to get one to you. The results of our Christmas scarf project were amazing. Twenty-seven Prayer Shawl Ministers plus some additional people completed 121 scarves, 30 hats, and a variety of other items including blankets, shawls, and baby sweaters. Two crates were delivered to the Mercy Home for Girls as Christmas gifts. In addition, three boxes were delivered to Mercy Missions in Texas: Laredo, Brownsville and El Paso. There was a total of 59 pounds of lovingly made items sent to Texas. The Ministers are preparing a second shipment to the Texas missions to be shipped the first week of February. The missions have told us what they need most which is scarves, hats and mittens. Although Texas can be very warm the winter nights can be very cold, especially in poorly constructed shelters. May you be wrapped in God’s love, Margie Rudnik, for the St. Giles Prayer Shawl Ministry

Many families in our parish have received or will be receiving the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Cardinal Cupich. You are encouraged to read the materials, prayerfully consider your response, and return your offering as soon as possible. Commitment weekend for the Appeal is officially scheduled for February 6-7. In the next few weeks, information will be shared on how you can participate given the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic if you did not receive the mailing. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes and schools who receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gifts.
