Happy New Year to all! 2020 will provide us with many opportunities to do what

we do best - show our cars and enjoy the company of one another. A “Thank You”

goes to all Club members who volunteered last year and made possible our successful

Holiday Gala, Depot Show, Chef’s Nights Out, Ice Cream Nights and the many other

car shows/exhibits and outings throughout the year. Appreciation is also expressed to

all Officers, Directors and Committee Chairs for your dedicated service to the Club.

Thanks also to Judy and David Chynoweth for ensuring that no one leaves our monthly

meetings with an unfulfilled “sweet tooth.”

The spirit of volunteering was exemplified at our last membership meeting when

Hank Schwietering started the ball rolling by volunteering to handle the Depot Show

field layout, followed by Hank Feinberg agreeing to manage the Depot Show

registrations and Loretta DeSchane and Joyce French taking on Membership

Committee duties. With Gary Doner at the helm of the Show Committee, it is exciting

to anticipate our 2020 Depot Show. There will be many opportunities presented

throughout the year for volunteering and deriving the satisfaction of knowing you

made a vital contribution to advancing the interests of the Club.

At our last meeting on December 16, David French, Jack Studley and Tom

DeSchane provided us with entertainment as they told of their motoring exploits and

experiences this past summer- including someone running out of gas! Thanks for the

laughs!

Thirteen cars were exhibited at Aston Gardens on December 6. Neal “Cosco

Cindy” Jamieson took top honors for period appropriate attire. We enjoyed good

weather, camaraderie and lunch provided by the facility. Laura Larsen showed us she

knows how to throw a party! Our Holiday Lunch at Bonefish Grill on December 11 was

enjoyed by all and we had the added pleasure of welcoming new members Greg and

Josette Russo.

I look forward to seeing you all at our Gala on Saturday, January 11 at Longshore

Lake County Club. Blow the dust off your dancing shoes and come prepared to have a

blast!

3. There is enough water in Lk. Superior to cover all of North and South

7 sweet cars you can import in 2020 under the 25-year rule

America's infamous 25-year rule is a dastardly obstacle to importing any vehicle

into the U.S. that was sold inside that time span because of Government rules and

regulations (EPA and DOT). Cars with engines over 21 years are exempted by the

EPA , and DOT requires car to be 25 years or older for exemption. But there are

exemptions for cars coming of age now, based on production dates, and here are

7, each of which will be viable for import under the 25-year rule in 2020:

1. 1995 Nissan Skyline GT-R(R33 generation);

2. 1995 Fiat Barchetta (Type 183)

3. 1995 Suburu Impreza WRX Prodrive (Turbo 2000)

4. 1995 MG F;

5. 1995 Alfa Romeo Spider and GTV;

6. 1995 Holden HSV Clubsport (Commodore VS)

7. 1995 Honda Integra Type R.

Membership

A Chilly Start To 2020

This morning, January 1, 2020, it was a cold 59 degrees when I drove the 1931 Model

A to breakfast--the solution to my chill was easy; I put on a jacket and closed the front

windshield. Knowing that it’s time for my monthly blurb, I sat down at the computer

this afternoon and checked my (our!) roster and got another chill. We have 59, same

as the morning temperature: fifty-nine paid members so far. Where are the other half

of the 2019 members? Being a well seasoned procrastinator, I can understand, sort of.

Membership in AACA and the Naples-Marco Region both expired yesterday if

your renewals haven’t been paid. Last call. Please pay your AACA dues; if you

haven’t, then please send your $20 check payable to the AACA Naples-Marco Region to

me. If you get even a fraction of the enjoyment that I enjoy, you need to renew your

membership.

If you weren’t at the December membership meeting, you may not have heard. There

is critical need to have a new Registrar for the March 28, 2020, Depot Show. Rather

than see our long standing, biggest and most visible event be cancelled, I volunteered

to take that position, but I would need to cut back on membership activities. Loretta

DeShane, bless her heart, offered to take over as our Membership Chairman, but I feel

obligated to hand over the reins after I finish the AACA annual reports and publish the

2020 Membership Directory.

Here is the most recent renewal reminder from AACA HQ:

Your AACA membership runs on a calendar year

from January 1 through December 31.

If you have already renewed your membership for 2020, thank you!!

If you have not renewed your membership yet, please take a few minutes to do it now.

Renewing your membership only takes 5 minutes and can be done one of three ways:

MAIL: A renewal form was included with your Nov/Dec issue of Antique

Automobile magazine. Simply fill out the form and send it back to the office with a check or

credit card information.

Page 7: January 2020 - Naples Marco Region AACA12. The number of bourbon barrels in Kentucky outnumbers the state's population by more than 2 million. 13. Drive through Monowi, NE, and you

PHONE: Call AACA Headquarters (717-534-1910) and any of the staff here would be happy to

take your renewal over the phone with a credit card payment (VISA, MasterCard or Discover).

Office hours are M-F, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

ONLINE: Renew online here. (If this is your first time renewing online, please "retrieve

account" first. You will then get an email with a temporary password and can login under

"registered customers." You can then update your information, change your password to

something you can remember and renew your membership. Make sure to check your email junk

and spam folders for the temporary password email -- we've heard a lot of them are ending up

there! If you don't get it, just call us and we will help you. (Ed.: If the link doesn’t work, just

go to AACA.org on your computer).

Wishing you all a Happy New Year.

Post Script: PA Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement

Program

Other states may follow...Beginning January 4, 2020, the PA Department of

Transportation and Pennsylvania Turnpike will begin a 60-day pilot program to

formally test what's called the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement

Program. The program is designed to cause drivers to slow down in

construction areas by setting up speed monitoring equipment in work areas.

After the pilot program is finished, the two state agencies expect to deploy

private contractors in white Jeep Cherokee SUVs at various sites throughout

the state to monitor speed beginning March 4. If the monitors detect

someone going more than 11 miles an hour over the speed limit, the motorist

will receive a notice by mail with a warning for the first violation, followed by a

$75 fine for a second offense and $150 for each future ticket.

Page 9: January 2020 - Naples Marco Region AACA12. The number of bourbon barrels in Kentucky outnumbers the state's population by more than 2 million. 13. Drive through Monowi, NE, and you

The incidents will be treated as civil violations and no points will be added to a

driver's license.

January History,

January seems to be the month when all the car shows and exhibits begin in

earnest. The January 1996 issue of the Running Board has a call for cars at a

show at the Collier County Library in January. February was the Cool Cruisers

show. There were static displays on Marco Island and at Windstar, also in

February. Some of these involved a nice donation to the club, so members were

encouraged to participate.

The Depot Show in 1996 was held on March 9 and was listed as the 8th Annual

Depot Show.

Officers elected that year included: Bob Vik, President, Charles Pickett, V-P, Don

Ankney, V-P, Joe Williams , Treasurer, Sally Germain, Secretary. Directors that

year included: Al Brehm, Membership, Coni Tibbetts, Newsletter, Jack Bamford,

Depot Show, Mason Seibel, Tours, Neal Jamison, auto Exhibits, Roger Germain,

Publicity. Others holding elected positions included: Bill Fote, asst. Treasurer,

Edson Williams,Legislation, Ed McLeod, Sergeant at Arms, Judd & Evelyn

Thoman, Historians, Irene Williams, Sunshine, and Barbara Pickett, Refreshments.

This newsletter also lists the couples responsible for refreshments for each

month of the year. Todd and Brenda Pulis had agreed to do refreshments in

March of 1996.

The newsletter ends with a reminder to members that volunteers will be needed

for the Depot Show. This is our big show of the year and we need everyone’s

help.

December 16 Meeting Minutes

Meeting called to order at 7:00 PM.

Installation ceremony of new officers dispensed with and new slate installed.

New members Josette and Gregory Russo welcomed.

Guests - Janet: Tom and Loretta DeShane's daughter.

Yvonne and Paul Rhodes have been members for 30 years and still officers of the club.

Grant and Keith won the "heavy foot" award from last month's meeting. Majority of

members present were over age 75. Roger Donald reminded everyone of the Feb 5

visit to the Everglades schools

John gave the treasurers report and Hank gave the membership report. John read

thank you notes from two of the many groups we donated to. As of last year, we had

145 members and he reminded everyone it was dues paying time. There was no

Sunshine report.

There was a long discussion about participation of members especially in the Depot

Show. Gary reported that this is a major undertaking and without more volunteers to

help the show will not be able to continue. Our charity donations are made possible

by the show and more help is needed to run the show. Rudy discussed reality of

membership and participation of members and the need for everyone to work at

making the club work.

Hank S. offered to field layout for the show. Loretta volunteered to take on

membership, Judy C. will do the gate job and Hank F. will be registrar.

No new business. The program was about members. Dave French, Jack Smedley and

Ton DeShane talked about themselves and their cars. Gary was recognized for all his

work on the Depot Show. The 50/50 was $30 plus many other door prizes.

Meeting adjourned 8:40PM/

Journeys

Flint-Pen Strand--Bonita Springs

Located minutes east of I-75 in Bonita Springs, off Bonita Beach Road, is the

Flint Pen Strand Trails Preserve. The first trail opened earlier this year and if

you're interested in nature preserves and watershed management, you can now

take one of the weekly guided hikes on trails managed by CREW (Corkscrew

Regional Ecosystem Watershed) personnel. The property was owned by the Flint

family, cattle ranchers, but is now under the aegis of Southwest Florida

Management District. Four trails are open to the public; the wetlands provide

critical habitat where panthers, bobcats, deer, small game and birds thrive. It's

important to us, as our drinking water comes from this watershed. It's so close,

too. For more information on trail locations, weekly hikes and other events visit
