yourself, because God has never made
two people exactly alike.”

Happy New Year! My wish for all of you is for a happy
and healthy new year. It is truly a pleasure knowing
you and having your support and friendship. Each of
you brings a uniqueness to our Center that is very
special. Thank you for sharing yourself with us.
2018 was a good year even though we lost a few dear
friends, including my mom, Betty Williams, Dorothy
Grifka, Helen Davidson, and most recently a long-time
supporter of the Monroe Center, Ed Riley. It is always
sad. Our hope comes in the good memories that we
hold in our hearts.
Financially, we ended 2018 in the black and provided
over 90,000 hours of service. Thanks to those who have
supported the Center’s fundraisers and contributed
through time and money. It takes a village, and I am
grateful for the caring group of folks who work together
to make things happen here.
We had some Board Members retire from the Board this
year — Peggy Barton, Sr. Joan Kusak, Matt Vanisacker,
and Henry Lievens. Welcome new Board members, Denny
Richardville, Geri Allen, Sr. Janet Ryan, and Bill Bacarella.
We look forward to having their guidance.
Looking forward to the new year, the Board is in the pro-
cess of developing a five-year capital improvement plan.
While our dream is to have more space, in the meantime,
we have a few projects that we’d like to tackle. Donations
to our reserve fund for capital improvements will help us
accomplish the goals. Stay tuned for more details.
We hope to see you often in the New Year. It’s very
tempting during the cold, winter months to stay inside.
Research shows that it’s good for us to be with others.
Just be safe when you venture out. Happy New Year! - Sandie

January 10 at 11:30 a.m.
You’re invited to learn about the Roaring 20’s and Prohibition
during a special presentation by Lisa Gessner from the
Monroe County Historical Museum on Thursday, January 10.
"The Roaring 20s were a time of economic prosperity, rapid
technological advances, changing roles for women, and a new
consumerism mindset. After the end of the Great War, many
Americans were looking for fun, lightness, and to explore all
this new age had to offer. Couple this with the “Noble Experi-
ment” of Prohibition that was taking place nationwide, and
one can see how this era got its name. Come learn about the
early days of Prohibition in Monroe County and see some
great objects that will bring to life the Roaring 20s!"
Lunch that day is Chicken Bruschetta.
Following the presentation, you’ll be treated to a
complimentary dessert.
A 50/50 drawing is also planned!

New 15 / 15 Group Begins It’s the new year! Maybe it’s not the first time
that we’ve resolved to eat healthier and lose
weight. After all, we’ve seen lots of new years.
Even a five pound weight loss, however, can make
a difference in our health and how we feel. The 2018 Monroe County Health Assessment
found that 76% of people 65 and over in Monroe
County are overweight. That means, there’s
plenty of room for improvement! Starting January 8, Dave McNew will again lead a
support group that encourages weight loss and
lots of information on how to eat healthier. On
the next page, you’ll find some exercises to add to
the mix. The group meets at 11:00 a.m. for 15
weeks. Please sign up at the Front Desk. Let’s make 2019 our year to get healthier. The
15 / 15 Support Group will help lead the way.

Six Easy Exercises You Can Do At Home
We all know that we should do activities to
strengthen muscles and bones and to challenge
balance and coordination to prevent falls, improve
mood, help sleep patterns and improve our health.
Here are some body weight exercises you can do at
home. They should be done daily, or at least twice
a week. 1. Sit to Stand - Sit tall near the front of a chair
with your feet slightly back. Lean forwards
slightly and stand up (with your hands on the
chair if needed). Step back until your legs touch
the chair, then slowly lower yourself back into
the chair. Repeat 10 times.
2. Heel Raises - Stand tall, holding on to a sturdy
surface such as the kitchen sink or worktop,
then lift your heels off the floor, taking your
weight into your big toes. Try not to lean for-
wards or backwards. Hold for three seconds,
then lower with control. Repeat 10 times.
3. Toe Raises - Stand tall holding the same sup-
port, then raise your toes, taking your weight
on your heels. Don’t stick your bottom out.
Hold for three seconds, then lower with con-
trol. Repeat 10 times.
4. One Leg Stand - Stand close to your support
and hold it with one hand. Balance on one leg,
keeping the supported knee soft and your pos-
ture upright. Hold the position for 10 seconds.
Repeat on the other leg.
5. Heel-to-Toe - Stand tall, with one hand on
your support. Put one foot directly in front of
the other to make a straight line. Look ahead,
take your hand off the support as you’re able
and balance for 10 seconds. Take the front foot
back to hip-width apart. Then place the other
foot in front and balance for 10 seconds.
6. Heel Toe Walking - Stand tall, with one hand
on your support. Look ahead and walk 10
steps forwards, placing one foot directly in
front of the other so the feet form a straight
line. Aim for a steady walking action. Take the
feet back to hip width apart, turn around slow-
ly and repeat the steps in the other direction.
THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS
FOR A FANTASTIC 2018 . . .
“Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another.”
~Erma Bombeck
I grew up with my mother busting out in laughter
while reading Erma Bombeck books, so this quote is particularly meaningful to me. And how true this
quote is! I have been here for four months as the Volunteer Coordinator and feel incredibly blessed
to witness and participate in the caring the volun-teers here at the Monroe Center for Healthy Aging
have shown for each other. The laughter we share, the murals Herb draws for us, the answers Joyce,
Rose, Peggy, Connie, Val, Maxine, Linda, Lois, and Lisa give us at the desk, and the care we give each
other - from that sincere “hello” to getting Fleta a
cup of coffee, … I simply love being here all of you.
Of course you know by now, launching of the
Sunshine Program is my top priority and in 2018 our volunteers have gotten off to a great start. The
drivers have helped our friends get to over 30 criti-cal locations, including surgeries in Ann Arbor,
Toledo and Detroit. Meanwhile, the companions are working one on one with those needing a
friend, making it just a little easier for friends to
get through each week.
Volunteers - I cannot thank you each enough for your dedication to our Monroe County older adults
and to this Center, specifically.
Winter of 2019 Volunteer Needs: If you would like to join this amazing team of volunteers, we need
you! Below are the top gaps that need filling:
- Sunshine Companionship - Meal Preparation/Kitchen Assistance
- Salad Bar Server
If you are interested in helping us, give me a call,
Beth Berlin, at 734.241-0404, ext. 104. Thank you
and have a blessed 2019!

From RSVP:
January is National Hot Tea Month
Article Courtesy of National Day Calendar.com
and submitted by Taylor Eason, RSVP Program Coordinator
Bitter cold January days call for nothing less than a long bath, candles lit, and cup after cup of hot tea to warm you up from the inside out. A hot, steamy cup of tea is perfect for any time of the day. Happy National Hot Tea Month, do yourself a favor and enjoy tea as much as you want this month! Have you ever wondered where tea came from, and what made someone put leaves in hot water for flavor? Well, legend says in 2737 BC, a Chinese emperor was sitting under a tree while his servant boiled drinking water when some leaves blew into it. The emperor happened to be a renowned herbalist, and he decided to taste the infusion that had just been created by accident… He loved it, and that’s where tea comes from! Here are some of the best benefits tea has to offer:
Tea is packed with antioxidants. These help keep our bodies “young” and protect them from toxins.
It has less caffeine than coffee. (The kinds that do contain caffeine) usually contain about 50% less than coffee which means you can drink it without affecting your nervous system.
Research shows a correlation between tea and heart health. A recent study says people who dr ink tea have a 20% less chance of having a stroke or heart attack than those who don’t.
It can help with weight loss, especially when paired with a well-balanced diet and exercise. Tea is usually calorie-free, and it can give you energy and cause your body to burn more calories throughout the day.
It’s an immune system booster. Studies show that tea helps immune cells reach their targets more quickly.
(Read the full article online at: https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-hot-tea-month-january/)
To sign up to volunteer with RSVP, call Taylor or Joe at 734-241-0408.
Early Morning: To start your day off right, try white tea first thing when you wake up. It’s gentle on a stomach that has been fasting (which we do when we sleep) and has a light, aromatic quality. For a big caffeine booster right away, choose a high quality white tea and boil with extremely hot water to bring out a lot of the caffeine. Mid-Morning: Around 10:00 or 11:00 in the morning, move to a green tea. This will help give your metabolism a kick start, and it has a very light, uplifting, approachable flavor. Lunch: Incorporate some tea with your lunch every day… Black tea is recommended at this time of day. It’s also great paired with food, and you can choose your level of caffeine depending on how your energy levels are that day. Post-Lunch: Pu-erh tea is a great choice for after lunch, because it only has a small amount of caffeine. Enough to help ward off that afternoon slump. It’s a perfect follow-up to a healthy, well-balanced lunch. Evening: There are several great options for nighttime tea. Some good teas to try that’ll calm you down and promote a good night’s sleep are Chamomile, Valerian Root, Lavender, Lemon Balm, and Passionflower.

The Perfect

“A Double
Portion”
book is available for sale at the Center for only $11. (Proceeds go to the Center.) Have you ever wondered about the own-ers of the stable where Jesus was born?
Sharon Bondy’s “A Double Portion” intro-duces us to the family who offered Mary and Joseph shelter, assistance, and food
that special Christmas so many years ago. The book talks about the friend-
ship that developed between the two couples and their children — twins Dave and Deborah — “a double portion.”
