Memorial Health Fund
The Golden Connections Community Center is proud to announce
that we have been awarded the 2019 Memorial Health Fund. This
grant program seeks to transform the way our community
addresses compelling health issues, funding programs that
improve the complete physical, mental and social well-being of the
residents of York and its surrounding communities. Previously,
MHF was a supporting organization of Memorial Hospital. After
Memorial Hospital was bought by Community Health Systems,
Memorial Health Fund began to look for a partner to help it carry out
its charitable purposes. In 2015, it became a supporting organization
of York County Community Foundation. All grantmaking decisions
are made by the MHF board of directors. The GCCC was awarded
$7,239.00 to further advance our cardio, balance, and strength
training programs for older adults in York County. A huge Thank You
goes out to the Memorial Health Fund for this wonderful opportunity
to better our health and wellness programs.
Senior Center Sponsors
Why do we need Sponsors? Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of older adults living in our
community. We accomplish this by offering interesting programs in a warm and welcoming setting.
To continue to offer vital services to everyone, we must expand the way we raise funds. Sponsorships will allow us to
continue to provide the services our members have come to rely upon along with the ability to pursue building
expansion opportunities, without asking for any out of pocket funds from them.
If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact Heather Goebeler or Kasie Ream at 244-7229. (Sponsors listed in the newsletter are paid advertisers. The center does not endorse any one sponsor.)
The Following is a Current List of Center Sponsors,

SAFE SNOW SHOVELING
As the cold weather and snow approach us this winter season, it is important to take precautions to ensure you are safe from any sprains and strains, slips and falls. Shoveling snow and slippery sidewalks can cause injuries.
Below are a few tips that can decrease chance of injury during shoveling.
• Warm up your muscles. Before heading outside, warm up your muscles with light exercises for about ten minutes. Push the snow, don’t lift it. Push the snow to the side as much as
possible, instead of lifting it. If you must lift, do it properly. Squat with
your legs apart, knees bent and back straight. Lift with your legs. Do not
bend at the waist.
• Think small scoops. Small amounts of snow are easier to lift, and you’re less likely to strain your back. Keep arms close to your body to avoid weight on your spine.
• Avoid twisting. Do not throw the snow over your shoulder or to the side. This twisting motion increases stress on your back.
• Remember to take rest breaks.
• Recognizing signs and symptoms of a cardiac event are also important. These include, chest pain and shortness of breath. Please seek medical attention if these occur.
More to look forward to…

These evening classes are open to EVERYONE in the community, young or old. We encourage all who attend to bring a friend, child, sibling, or grandchild. It is a wonderful opportunity to connect with friends and family, have fun and get a little exercise in the process.
For center members who would like to stay fresh and keep up with their line dance skills, the GCCC will continue to hold FREE lessons every Tuesday and Thursday at 12:15 p.m. Please see the Centers Activity Calendar for any possible class schedule changes due to the upcoming Holiday Season. For more information contact the GCCC at 717-244-7229.
Essential Oils 101 Essential Oils 101 classes have proven to encourage participants to make
life changes and attempt to become healthier in many different ways.
The GCCC has embraced the education offered to assist each participant
to learn more about oils. Recent classes have focused primarily
on “make and takes” where members had the opportunity to
make items to take home and experience firsthand. We will now
dive back into the educational aspects of essential oil usage.
Essential oils classes can offer an abundance of information
and give those who attend an opportunity to ask questions
regarding oils and what they offer. The next GCCC Essential
Oils 101 class is scheduled for Monday,
January 28th at
12:15 p.m.

Every New Year’s Eve, we all set goals to accomplish
throughout the coming year. Sometimes we are successful and
sometimes we are not. One of the most infamous resolution is
weight loss. Most of us long to shed a few pounds. But this
year, as you make those resolutions, maybe think more along
the lines of your health. Vow to get healthier in 2019. One of
the best ways to get healthier is to get moving, and moving
could mean something as simple as walking for even 15
minutes a day. Those 15 minutes a day could completely
change your life!
That is why the GCCC is starting a new program called Get-n-
Step. Every Monday and Friday at 12:15 p.m. we will
encourage members to get up and move, even if it is only for
15 minutes. We hope this will help to inspire participants to
continue this movement everyday, as it is so important for us
all to continue to move towards healthier lives. So please join
us in a year-long commitment to Get-n-Step and get healthier.
This month the Golden Connections
Community Center will offer multiple
opportunity’s for members to get a little more
winter season knowledge on how to better
navigate these colder months.
We will start with a presentation on Holiday
Weight Loss Tips on Tuesday, January 8th
at 10:30 a.m. For those of you who put on a few extra
pounds during the holiday season, we will offer a variety
of suggestions and tips on how to shed those pounds fast
and effectively.
Next, we will discuss many different Winter Safety Tips on
Tuesday, January 15nd at 10:30 a.m. Tips will include driving
safely in the snow, snow shoveling tips, frostbite treatment,
carbon monoxide prevention and more.
Finally, the GCCC will discuss Winter Self Care Tips, on
Tuesday, January 22nd at 10:30 a.m. The winter
months can feel long and be brutal, so we will
share tips to help you get through this
tough season physically and mentally.
Feel Free to join us at the Golden
Connections Community
Center for any and or all of
these presentations. We hope
to see you soon!

out great! Sometimes it doesn’t.

that will be assembled and then painted to help us get into the winter
spirit. Then on January 16th at 10:30 a.m. participants will upcycle
plastic spoons to create beautiful
pieces of art work as pictured here.
This project may take more than
one day so for those who need the
opportunity to finish up, can join

if any last-minute trips may have been planned
Upcoming Trips Widows Support Group You plan to spend your life with one person, you start a family with one person, you plan a future with one person, and then one day even though you want to believe that day is no where in the near future, they are gone…. Now, you feel alone and lost, what are you supposed to do now, how does your life move forward without them…. you may feel hurt, pain, helplessness….anger. How do I know this…because I have lived this, I have felt this, I know this, and there are many more who have gone through or are currently going through this. And now we will all stand together to support each other. The Golden Connections Community Center will hold its first Widows Support Group Meeting on Tuesday, January 29th at 10:30 a.m. This meeting will give those who attend the chance to connect with others and share stories if they choose to. We will also discuss goals for the group and plans for the future. If you are alone… if you are scared… if you need a friend… if you need to talk…then please join us for our first meeting and be a part of the start, of something good for all of us.
