HAPPY NEW YEAR AND WELCOME BACK! We hope everyone had a
safe and happy holiday. January and February are great months for students
to focus on their academics. As report cards come home in early February,
January is a time for students to demonstrate their learning and then set new
goals in February for the remainder of the year. We also hope to celebrate
Literacy during the Family Literacy weekend—with a sip and read activity on Jan. 26th. If
we’re lucky and get some good snow—we will plan a winter play day for students to enjoy snow
activities while working on team building skills.
Congratulations to everyone who was involved in the Christmas Play. It was spectacular
and enjoyed by all who watched it. Thank you to Mr, Niven, Mr. Mazzuca, Mrs. Smalley, Mrs.
Hyatt-Montgomery, Ms. Charlinski, and to School Council member—Mrs. Sagaski and Mrs.
Degasperis who organized the Raffle trees and baskets. Congratulations to the lucky winners.
We know the parking lot is a busy place so PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY when entering
and exiting the lot. Little ones don’t always stop to see if there is movement, plus we have
several students who need assistance with mobility. CAUTION is always expected in our lot. If
your child is eligible for the bus, please make use of this service. It will help to reduce the
number of cars dropping off and picking up. Please consider letting your children walk to and
from school—it is healthy for them and assists them in reducing stress and gives them time to
think about their day. If avoidable, please do not ask for students to be dismissed early from
school. It interrupts our classes and rushes the end of day routines. Our ECO team is
implementing a new program re: walking from a short distance! Stay tuned for details!

Children need 60 minutes a day of physical activity. Keep your children active through winter by getting outside. Try skating, hiking, building a snowman or go tobogganing. Check out Participaction for great winter games ideas: http://www.participaction.com/get-moving/bring-back-winter-play/
INDOOR FOOTWEAR
With the approach of snow and wet weather,
each child should keep a pair of shoes or
slippers at school. The floors can get wet and
cold, and children should have indoor foot
wear; they cannot wear socks or bare feet in
case of a fire emergency.

Anyone can get head lice. Check for head lice weekly as part of your regular routine. The best way to avoid the spread of lice is by avoiding head-to-head contact. Remind your children not to share combs, brushes, hats, scarves or anything used on the head. Checking for lice
Use a bright light (a magnifying glass may help)
Part hair in small sections and look near the scalp
Head lice are tiny grey/brown insects that live only on the scalp of humans. They crawl quickly but cannot fly or jump. Adult female lice glue eggs on the hair shaft close to the scalp.
If you find lice
Check all the people that live in your house
Treat all cases at the same time to stop the spread of lice
Inform the school and/or daycare so classmates can be checked
Tell anyone in close contact with your child (family members, friends, baby-sitters)
Getting rid of lice Treatment products are to be used only on those who have head lice, as they do not prevent lice. Talk to a health professional about products and methods available. Follow instructions carefully. The Wet Combing Method helps find and remove head lice by combing through hair soaked with con-ditioner, using a fine-toothed comb. For more information on Wet Combing Method or on lice visit: www.niagararegion.ca/health search lice or call the Parent Talk Line at 905-688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074 ext. 7555
DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER
Students are outside for two fitness breaks each day. Hats, gloves, boots, snow pants and warm jackets make this time more enjoyable. It is always a good practice to pack extra mittens and socks. PLEASE LABEL ITEMS

Every year, our director at the DSBN asks students across the board to create a card and submit it
to the board office. This year students were asked to create a card that would commemorate
what's special about different months of the year by choosing one month and then depicting what
makes that month stand out. Here are some submissions from Mrs. Smalley's Grade 4/5 class.
