Science Corner: Facts about Wild Turkeys
Article by Isabel R.
The Wild Turkey and the Muscovy
Duck are the only two domesticated
birds native to the New World. In
the early 1500’s, the European ex-
plorers brought home Wild Turkeys
from Mexico, where native people
had domesticated the birds for cen-
turies. Turkeys quickly became a
European delicacy due to their size
and taste from their diets of wild
nuts. The English name of the bird
may be a holdover from early shipping
routes that passed through the coun-
try of Turkey on their way to deliver-
ing the birds to the European market.
Male Wild Turkeys provide no parental
care. Newly hatched chicks follow their
mother, who feeds them for a few days
until they learn to find food on their
own. The chicks band together into a group composed of several
hens and their broods. Winter groups can exceed over 200 tur-
keys at a time.
In the United States, dwindling numbers continue to take place,
requiring individuals to reintroduce these valuable game birds
into the wild. The President of the United States pardons a tur-
key, some days it can still end up on the dinner table. These Wild
Turkeys are quite a find and are greatly celebrated during
Thanksgiving and Christmas times.

So many sports are available to individuals who like to be active. From
tennis, basketball, football, baseball, and soccer. It is very important to
remain active because it increases an individuals well being. Playing sports
doesn't just help you with health and keeping up, but also helps individuals
make friends and being apart of something that is bigger than one person.
Teams works together to win, to establish a bond that unifies and appreci-
ates one another. It is always fun to win in sports, however what's most
important about playing sports is having fun with one another.
World News: Koala’s from Australia
by Tammie P.
1.
The newest explorer has poked his head out of the
pouch to look at the world for the first time. The
new Koala Joey is the first of a group of Joeys born
on Koala Island as a part of Australia Zoo’s breed-
ing program for the vulnerable species.
2.
The population of Koalas are being radically
affected by disease, habitat loss, and the increasing
human footprint. Keeping a diverse population
within the zoo has become very important due to
the Koala’s drastically declining rates in the wild.
Although on the endangered list, koala’s are
deeply loved.

3.
While eucalyptus is the main source of food for
Koala’s, they are not born with the digestive
enzymes to make the transition from milk to
leaves. Before they can begin their leaf diet, the
koala must first eat ‘pap’, a specialized form of
their mother’s dropping which helps them con-
sume a potent diet.
Entertainment: Jay Perez
by Kim D.
The Latin Grammy nominated
vocalist Jay Perez was born on
September 23, 1963 in San Anto-
nio, Texas. Jay stated that “I saw
more bad things than good, but I
will never forget where I came
from”. Jay grew up in one of the
poorest neighborhoods in a west
side housing project, on St. Chris-
topher Street. Jay Perez, known to
many natives as “The Voice” is
well known for mixing rhythm
and blues with traditional Tejano
music. Jay attended John Jay High
School, however he dropped out
his junior year to work and provide for
his brother and sister. He initially began
drumming for a band called Mysterio
with Albert Castaneda. This beginning
stage opened many doors and led to him
becoming the lead vocalist for the band
Latin Breed and David Lee Garza y los
Musicales. Jay began his solo career in
the early 1990s and has released numer-
ous albums. He has won numerous Te-
jano Music Awards. Jay Perez inspires
many individuals who have nothing to
dream big and to keep pursuing all the
things they want to accomplish.
Socialite: Sporting Sports Wear
by Kim D.
Sports wear has been a part of the street
wear wardrobe since day one. Jordan
Sneakers, basketball caps, varsity jackets,
and jersey’s are classic and embrace a
sporty nation of individuals being indi-
vidual and supporting a team of choice.
Sport fashion is for both men and women
and spark an allegiance to a particular
sport. Some wear Jerseys on game day as
a lucky charm for an epic win and some
just enjoy the comfort from wearing
loose fitted clothing. Whatever the rea-
son, Sports wear is increasing. There was
a time in the 50’s and 60’s when only
players were allowed to wear jerseys.
Many believe that Michael Jordan was
the center of the trend that sparked
much of wearing jerseys and sports
wear. After realizing how popular sports
wear was many jumped on board. The NBA being a number one source.
Many individuals still have many jerseys in their closet, however some let
them hang, but for the ma-
jority, jerseys are still a hit.
Have you ever watched the
crowd during game day to
see how many individuals
wear their jerseys.. Next
time check it out. The spirit
is real and there are numer-
ous people who enjoy
(reppin) their team.

A Unicorn Tale
Story Writer: Susan H.
Once upon a time there lived a mother unicorn named Lola and a baby unicorn
named Charlie. Each day the unicorns would travel between two villages in order
to work. One foggy morning when the unicorns were traveling, Charlie turned
the wrong turn and became lost. Lola desperately looked for him and became
really worried, for in the forest lived a monster that would hurt Charlie, if he
found him. Lola looked inside of every cave, turned over every rock, and cried
every moment. Lola feared that she would
never see Charlie again, so she laid down and
fell into a deep sleep.
Charlie walked around the forest when Mr.
Bone came up to him asking if he needed help.
Charlie explained to Mr. Bone that he was lost
and looking for his mother. Each time Mr.
Bone looked at Charlie, he became hungry.
Charlie felt scared and would continue to walk
with Mr. Bone. Mr. Bone explained that he was
hungry and needed help to find food. Charlie
agreed to help him, but each time they
searched for berry bushes, they were unable to
find any berries. Mr. Bone thought how he could eat Charlie, how he could
cover it up. Mr. Bone decided that because he was so hungry, he would eat
Charlie. Mr. Bone came up with a plan, just when he was going to jump on
Charlie, he immediately changed his mind. Mr. Bone didn't want to eat Charlie,
for he had become his friend. He decided to continue to help Charlie find his
mom. He requested information from Birdie, a pretty parrot and found where
his mom was. They traveled and found Lola asleep; Charlie ran and jumped on
his mom. She awoke and saw that Mr. Bones was with Charlie, She started to
squeal. Charlie explained what happened and Lola, decided to help Mr. Bone find
berries. She guided him into a magical part of the forest, where berries grew
each time one was picked. He was so happy, for he feared the worst. Lola, Char-
lie, and Mr. Bone lived happily ever after.
Christmas 80’s to Tell
by Johnny M.
One Night, one Christmas eve…..
Mom and dad told us, “now, now little ones off, off to bed” go to sleep and dream of treats of sweets and a precious lit-tle dolly that says “momma!”, toys that goes on tracks with little imaginary people aboard the polar express, with a red and green little engine that goes Toot-Toot!
Put out milk and cookies for Santa claus for Christmas morning they will be all gone.
Mom hollers come down little one and open up what Santa has brought for you this Christmas….
A Christmas stocking full of goodies and holiday treats, watching movies on TV and programs like “An Elvis X-MAS Special” or “Santa is coming to town”. Drinking a glass of eggnog with mommy and daddy and having breakfast with big sis, little sis, big brother, and baby brother; as this is his first Christmas. Drinking milk from a bottle as night falls. Off to bed, off to bed I said and read about a goodnight and sing songs of lullabies. Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. Oh. Wait! is that the New Years Bell!!

Food for Thought: Surviving a Tornado
Poem By Tina A.
Buildings fall by day;
Cars destroyed!
The ground shakes by night;
Hope all gone;
Yet, life survived;
Individuals lucky to be alive;
Although materials all gone;
Air surrounds them;
Heart continues to beat;
Tornado washed away everything great;
But, left a seed;
A seed grows and days become better;
One act helps others;
The tornado tried to destroy hope;
Yet, hope survived;
People did not divide;
They came together to care for one another.

Food for Thought: Stressful Situations
By Debra T.
Let Go, Be Happy!
Being stressed most of the time can wear you
down and make you sick and turn you into a
mean person. Stress can set off alarms in your
brain and body and you will react by fighting
or running away, which is not good. Stress can
make people forget and being stressed out can
make people feel like you want to run away
from home. There are so many things that you can do to help with the
stress, like watching TV, playing sports, listening to music, and talking with
friends. Stressful situations can come out of nowhere and cause people to
react bad, but each person can be better and help each other to be better
about handling bad situations caused by stress. Let it go and be happy.
Food for Thought: Being Thankful
By Genevieve B.
We need to be thankful for what we have
and sympathetic about what other people
don't have. We should be thankful that we
have staff and friends who care about us and
family who wont let us down. Each one of us
should hope to do good in life. We all need
to be thankful that we have a place to live
and know that God wants us to be happy
with friends and family. Some days it can be very hard to be thankful, be-
cause it so easy to get jealous by what other people have, but when your
friend gets something nice, we should be happy for them, instead of become
negative that we didn't get what they have. Being thankful is very important
because it creates a peaceful place and opens the heart to feel and give love.
