As we enter this New Year my thoughts and prayers are focused on how we will impact the Seguin area with the Good News of Jesus. How will we reach those now far from God? One of the most important factors for the growth of our church, of any church for that matter, is how loving we are as Christians. Jesus says this in John 13:35: Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are My disciples.” It’s absolutely essential that we lead our congregation to be a love-filled community. You can accept somebody without approving of their lifestyle. They may be doing something totally contrary to the word of God, but you can accept them as a person loved by God without approving of the sin their involved in. (Read of the woman caught in adultery in John 8, note how Jesus loves her without endorsing her failure.) Romans 15:7 says, “Accept one another just as Christ accepted you.” That’s a start — acceptance. At Faith we are trying to cultivate an attitude of acceptance. At Faith, we communicate that the church is a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints. This is and will be a church where people are growing in faith. This is a church for people who don’t have it all together. It doesn’t matter where you’ve been. It matters where you are now and if you know Jesus. Each of you should look not only to your own interest but also the interest of others.” Appreciate everybody. Find something you can like, not just accept. Tell them so. With some people this may require a little creativity. You may have to look a little while. Maybe you just need to value them for their uniqueness. From the Desk of Pastor Jim…

Loving people in Jesus name!

At the beginning of this New Year, I am deep in thought and prayer about Faith

Lutheran! I am honored and proud to be your pastor! Diana and I deeply care

about each of you and we love serving Jesus with you! As we enter this New

Year my thoughts and prayers are focused on how we will impact the Seguin

area with the Good News of Jesus. How will we reach those now far from God?

One of the most important factors for the growth of our church, of any church

for that matter, is how loving we are as Christians. Jesus says this in John

13:35: “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are My

disciples.”

It’s absolutely essential that we lead our congregation to be a love-filled

community. It’s love that reaches people. You don’t argue people into the

kingdom of heaven. You love them into the kingdom of heaven.

How can Faith Lutheran be a more loving church? Three simple steps:

1. Accept people.

Do you know why people have a hard time accepting others? They confuse

acceptance with approval. There’s a big difference between acceptance and

approval. You can accept somebody without approving of their lifestyle. They

may be doing something totally contrary to the word of God, but you can accept

them as a person loved by God without approving of the sin their involved in.

(Read of the woman caught in adultery in John 8, note how Jesus loves her

without endorsing her failure.)

Romans 15:7 says, “Accept one another just as Christ accepted you.” That’s a

start — acceptance. At Faith we are trying to cultivate an attitude of acceptance.

At Faith, we communicate that the church is a hospital for sinners, not a

museum for saints. This is and will be a church where people are growing in

faith. This is a church for people who don’t have it all together. It doesn’t matter

where you’ve been. It matters where you are now and if you know Jesus. If you

want to grow up more and become more like Him every day, you’re welcome

here.

2. Appreciate people.

This goes a little bit further than acceptance. Philippians 2:35 says, “Do nothing

from selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better

than yourself. Each of you should look not only to your own interest but also the

interest of others.” Appreciate everybody. Find something you can like, not just

accept. Tell them so. With some people this may require a little creativity. You

may have to look a little while. Maybe you just need to value them for their

uniqueness. What a boring church we would be if we all shared the same

personality! continued on page 2

Church Council Communication Corner Church Council meets the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 PM in the

Activity Center with an agenda-setting meeting on the first Tuesday of the

month, also at 6:30 in the small kitchen. The Council encourages any member

of the congregation who would like to bring something before the Council to

contact any council member or attend the agenda-setting and Council

meetings for the month.

Highlights from the December Council Meeting: Approved a motion to set January 28, 2018 as the date for the

Congregational Meeting to elect new Council members, Endowment

Committee members, and delegates for the LCMC national gathering and

approve/accept the church annual report.

Approved motions to accept the Endowment Committee’s recommendation

for disbursement of accrued interest for 2017 and new members for the

2018 committee.

Approved a motion to approve the 2018 Annual Budget to be voted on by

the congregation.

From the Desk of Pastor Jim, continued

3. Affirm people. Give everybody a lift whenever you can. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says “Encourage

one another and build each other up.” When people stumble, don’t criticize,

sympathize. Be an encourager, not a condemner. You can encourage people

just by smiling at them. The ministry of encouraging folks in our church is

crucial and vital. Let’s cover our campus with people who love the Lord and

who show it in their faces. Give a welcome handshake, a smile.

Absolutely nothing can stop the church that’s filled with love. Nothing. It

doesn’t happen accidentally. It requires an all out effort by each member of our

congregation. Everybody needs to contribute to the atmosphere at Faith

Lutheran Church. Love draws outside people in. I believe that God is just

waiting for a church that will love people unconditionally. He can use that kind

of church to spark a spiritual awakening in our city that all the forces of hell

couldn’t stop. It will change the climate of Seguin for Christ. Nothing can stop a

loving church.

Trip to Cristo Rey Scheduled for February 10—11 submitted by Harold Bogisch

A group from Faith including Pastor Jim, will be making a trip to our mission

church, Cristo Rey in Pharr on February 10th and 11th. If you would like to go,

please let Harold Bogisch or Jesse Atzger know. If you have not been, it is a

good experience. We will be taking the trailer with items members give. Please

do not bring items before January 2nd. Donations will be stored in the bar-b-

que building. The best time to bring donations would be on Wednesday

mornings when the work crew meets.

SOW ABUNDANTLY - REAP ABUNDANTLY

TRUST GOD TO PROVIDE

2 Corinthians 9:6 "If we sow abundantly, we will reap in

abundance; if we sow sparingly, we will reap sparingly."

As we prepare for our annual Commitment Sunday, January 14, 2018, the

Stewardship Committee asks that you really think about our theme and

Paul's words to the Corinthians (see our theme verse above). Do we really

trust God to provide for us all that we need in our daily lives? God tells us not

to worry; he takes care of the birds of the air and the flowers of the field, and

He will take care of us; we are more valuable. (See Matthew 6: 25-34.)

The principle of abundant harvest (we reap as we sow) should encourage us

to trust God, and in response to His blessings, to give generously and seek to

glorify Him. We do not only respond to God's blessings with our financial

support of Faith Lutheran, but also with our service by giving our time and our

talents.

Look for ways to be generous with your time, talent, and treasure. Instead of

an instinctive "No," learn to say "Yes" more often. God always returns more

than we give. Our part is to sow generously; God's part is to bless generously

in return.

Please think and pray seriously about God's principle of abundance when you

consider what you will offer to God for 2018 through your tithes, offerings,

time and talents. May God bless you as you sow both dollars and deeds.

All Faith members were sent a Time & Talent Sheet for each adult member

the household and also an Offering Pledge card for your family. The pledge

cards are your secret commitment to financially support Faith Lutheran; they

will not be opened or seen by anyone, but will remain on the altar for the

entire year. Please indicate on the Time and Talent Sheet the areas in which

you are willing to serve.

COMMITMENT SUNDAY January 14, 2018

FULL BREAKFAST 8:30 - 9:30 AM in the LEC

SPECIAL WORSHIP SERVICE 10:00 AM (with Communion)

NO SUNDAY SCHOOL

Remember to complete and bring your Time and Talent Sheet and Offering

Pledges with you on January 14th, to place on the Lord's Altar as your

commitment to serve Him.

Thank you,

The Stewardship Committee

FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH RETREAT -

April 20-22, 2018 PLAN AHEAD - make plans NOW to join the Faith Lutheran Family for a

weekend retreat of fun, fellowship, learning and of course, good food. Our

retreat will be held Friday evening - Sunday morning (April 20-22, 2018)

at Leisure Resort on the San Marcos River in Fentress - just 20 miles

from Faith. Besides the river, the camp has a pool, volleyball and

basketball courts, horseshoes, and miniature golf course; so there should

be plenty to do.

We will use their Club House for a central gathering place for Friday

evening and Saturday; there will be planned activities and a potluck meal

and church service Saturday evening. We will have a special guest

speaker for the weekend - Bryce Formwalt, Director of Mission Growth for

the LCMC Texas District. Members of the congregation who do not wish

to spend the weekend are welcome to come out to join us for the day on

Saturday.

Each family is responsible for making their own reservations by calling:

512-213-0112 or 800-248-4103. Please Note: All regular RV site &

cabin prices will be reduced by a 30% discount for all attending our Faith

Retreat Weekend. Be sure to tell them you are with the Faith Lutheran

Church Retreat when making your reservation. Please try to make your

reservations early, as Leisure Resort is very popular, and they have a

limited number of cabins and RV sites that they are temporarily holding

for us. Also, if we have 10 reservations by the end of January, they will

allow us to use their Club House free of charge.

Leisure Resort has concrete pads with full hook ups for RV's under

beautiful, large pecan trees, shady water and electric sites for pop-ups

and tents and 3 different style cabins that sleep from 4 - 6 people. They

even have a tree house that sleeps 5; but this has no plumbing. You

must provide your own linens and cooking utensils in all rental units; no

pets or smoking allowed in any rental unit. One tent is allowed on each

rental unit site (except for the Duplex Cabins) for an additional $10 (but

maximum of 6 people per site, including the tent.)

See their website at www.LeisureResort.net for more information,

pictures, and complete details of what each cabin has in it and the

regular cost (but remember you will get a 30% discount). Also, look for a

display with pictures and brochures and park maps in the narthex.

We still need additional Retreat Committee Members. Please contact

Doris Engelhardt or Chuck or Sue Powell if interested in helping us plan

our retreat.

Gift giving can be difficult at times. Let's face it: some people are hard to shop for! But have you ever stopped to wonder why gift-giving is important? What's a gift really about anyway? Giving gifts to friends and family is an ancient ritual of nearly every known human culture. Gifts signify a relationship (or the desire for one) and are meant to delight, honor, and/or surprise the recipient. In our attempt to do just that we seek to give a gift that is an expression of that loving relationship, but it often gets deduced down to giving the gift that a person either wants or needs but does not already have.

So what do we give Jesus, the King of kings? On Epiphany, we are fondly reminded of the story when magi journeyed from afar to worship the newborn King Jesus bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Now these were extraordinary gifts to be given to a child. But what should we give Jesus, today? What does Jesus need or want that he doesn't already have? What would bring him delight, honor, or surprise? And what do I really have to offer? In honor of the magi, I'd like to propose three gift-giving suggestions:

First of all, give Jesus yourself. Take time to be with him, commune with him, worship him, and walk with him. In the busy-ness of our day-to-day lives we can be neglectful of our relationship with Jesus. Remember above all else, Jesus desires to be in relationship with you and with me.

Secondly, give Jesus the very best of what he's given you. God has uniquely created you with interests and talents and abilities. In this Epiphany season, remember how Jesus is calling you to use what he's given you to give Jesus honor. Ask God for guidance of how you can serve him with the gifts he's already given you.

Finally, give Jesus the introduction to a friend. Just as Jesus desires to be in a relationship with you, he desires to have that with all of people. Take time to introduce Jesus to a friend. Do all your friends already know Jesus? Then it is time to make some new friends with people who don't! Pray for God to guide you every step of the way and watch with awe and wonder as the Holy Spirit creates faith in the heart of your friend.

In this season of Epiphany we are reminded of the privilege we have to delight, honor, and surprise Jesus with our gifts. Let's cherish every gift-giving opportunity and live our lives to the honor and glory of God, giving thanks for his goodness and mercy!

Preschool News Submitted by Preschool Director Sharon Stollewerk

The TRUE meaning of Christmas was everywhere you looked in the Preschool wing.

The two, three, and four year-olds made beautiful handmade gifts for their parents,

and were even more excited about

GIVING them. The entire month

of December we held a food drive

for the Christian Cupboard. The

children opened their hearts and

generously donated 85 pounds of

food to help feed those in need.

Wow! The children truly

understand the meaning of

GIVING!

Angelic voices were heard at

Seguin Assisted Living as the

Preschoolers did an AMAZING

job singing Christmas carols to a

standing room only crowd. They

were rewarded with huge smiles

and warm hugs from the residents and parents.

During chapel, Ms. Stollewerk and Mrs. Crettenden (Abigail's mommy) presented the

wonderful story of Christ's birth. The children were in awe and listened so attentively

as these ladies brought the story to life. Mrs. Crettenden shared her wonderful

sandbox talents with her beautiful figurines including a stable, shepherds, sheep, and

the three Wise Men. When she asked the children what the wise men rode on, one

child proudly exclaimed "camos!" The

highlight of the story was when each

child held the tiny baby Jesus in their

hands.

A special visitor, the Gingerbread

Man, came to the preschool much to

the delight of the children. He

reminded them to be good boys and

girls and gave them all hugs before he

ran down the hall yelling, “you cant

catch me!” Thank you Syndra Schulze

for adding such fun to our morning!

All classes celebrated with a Birthday

Party for Jesus. What a joy it is that

these children understand the TRUE

meaning of Christmas! As the year

comes to an end, we thank God for the

gift of His Son and for the gift of each

of you who help our Preschool

Program grow each year. Merry

Christmas and God's blessings to all!

Faith’s Next Blood Drive

Sunday, February 11th, 10 AM – 12:30 PM

In the Life Enrichment Center

Walk-Ins are welcome but may require a longer wait time. Donors are highly encouraged

to pre-register for a time to donate by calling the church office at 830-379-7036 or by

clicking the link on www.faithseguin.org.

General Requirements for Donors: Anyone who is 16 years old weighing 120 pounds (with parental consent form), or at least 17 years old

weighing 110 pounds, and in good general health can donate blood. As a prospective donor you must

bring some form of identification (driver’s license, passport, etc.) in order to register.

Every day, children and adults are faced with challenging medical procedures that require

transfusions. In spite of what modern science has accomplished, there is still no substitute for human

blood. Donation is a gift from one person to another.
