FROM THE PRINCIPAL…
Welcome back everyone, and Happy New Year! I hope your holidays were
restful and restorative. We have an exciting term ahead of us with many
learning opportunities for one and all. These include various field trips across
the grades to Blue Mountain and other local venues, curling for Grade 7’s,
and drama presentations. Our annual public speaking event for Juniors and
Intermediates is coming up later this month and our Grade 8’s will be visiting
CCI very soon as they prepare for their transition to high school.
This term is a great time to settle into routines again now that the holidays are
done. That could include reading nightly with or to your child, taking a walk
on the weekend together or simply spending a few precious minutes together
getting caught up on how things are going at school Whatever your winter
routines, enjoy this time to be together with your children.
Happy January!
-Mrs. Birchall

From our Intermediate Students—thank you to students and staff for
supporting our first annual Pancake Palooza Day! We would also like to say
thank you to all our amazing parents and volunteers that helped make it such a
great success!
From our Global Club—due to your generosity, we were able to donate boxes
and boxes of peanut butter, cookies and other food items to Heritage Church

all your wonderful donations of hats and warm mittens! Thank you so much!
FRENCH IMMERSION AND EXTENDED FRENCH INFORMATION NIGHTS AND REGISTRATION
The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) offers French Immersion (FI) and Extended French as a Second
Language (EFSL) at select schools throughout the county. FI begins in Grade 1 and EFSL begins in Grade 5. These
programs give students a bilingual education and the opportunity to become fluent in another language.
Information sessions for parents of Senior Kindergarten students was held Tuesday January 5th, 2016 at Cameron Street P.S. at 6:30pm.
Admiral Collingwood E.S. will hold the session for Grade 4 students on Thursday January 7th, 2016 at 7pm.
To apply for these programs, you must complete the online application form in January at www.scdsb.on.ca under Programs, French as a
Second Language. The FI application form will be available from 9am on Monday January 18th until 9pm on Tuesday January 19th, 2016. The
EFSL application form will be available from 9am on Wednesday January 20th until 9pm on Thursday January 21st, 2016.
While every effort will be made to accommodate all FI applications, available space and staffing will determine how many students can be
registered in the program. Applications will be processed in the order they are received electronically. EFSL is an open access program. This
means that any student starting Grade 5 in September 2016 will be eligible for the EFSL program, and all online applications will be processed. It
is important to note that January 2016 is the last time that students can register for the EFSL program in the SCDSB, as the EFSL program is
being phased out. Parents who do not have Internet access at home, or who require other assistance accessing the online application,
should contact the school. Also, if parents have any questions regarding the program, please contact the school.
HIGH SCHOOL INFORMATION NIGHT IS
COMING!
Is your child starting Grade 9 next year? High
school information nights happen this winter!
Information nights give an overview of what’s new and what to expect,
and are a chance to ask questions.
High school is an exciting time—there are so many programs, clubs
and activities for students to try. Attend an information night to find
out what’s offered at your local high school.
Collingwood Collegiate will be offering their Grade 8 Night on
Tuesday January 19th from 7-9pm.
For more information, please visit the SCDSB’s website at
www.scdsb.on.ca/highschool.

CHARACTER TRAIT FOR JANUARY
HONESTY
Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom... —Thomas Jefferson
WINTER CANCELLATIONS
Winter has arrived in Simcoe County, and with it
comes the possibility of severe weather,
challenging winter driving conditions, and as a
result, possible bus and school even cancellations.
All information regarding cancelled buses in Simcoe County is posted
on the Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium’s bus
information website at www.simcoecountyschoolbus.ca. This link is
also found on our school website under Bus Information. OUR
SCHOOL IS IN THE WEST ZONE. When buses are cancelled, please
remember that schools are still open (unless otherwise noted) for
student
learning. Our website (www.cam.scdsb.on.ca) and our Twitter feed
@CameronStPS will also post information about bus and event
cancellations when we receive them.
The Consortium, in conjunction with bus operators, will make the
decision to cancel school buses before 6 a.m. and as such, will make
every effort to post announcements between 6 and 7 a.m. Parents
should also note that inclement weather cancellations are effective
for the whole day, and buses cancelled in the morning will not run at
the end of the day.
You can also subscribe to receive bus delay notifications here: https://
scstc.ca/Subscriptions and you can follow the Consortium on Twitter
@SCSTC_SchoolBus.
DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER
In Ontario, we can expect very cold and
snowy conditions...it is part of our winter.
Students go outside until the air temperature
is –25C and/or the wind-chill is –28C.
For this reason, students need to come to
school each day prepared to go outside, wearing the right winter
gear. Please ensure your child has appropriate clothing, boots,
hats and mittens every day.
Also, we recommend that students have extra mitts and socks in
their backpacks for those days when it is cold and things get extra
wet.
BUILDERS CLUB
A reminder to club members that Builders Club is
meeting on Monday January 18th at 3:20pm in Mr.
Potter’s classroom.
Builders Club would also like to thank all the students and staff for
supporting their December Bake Sale! They were able to raise $140.
for Collingwood Hospice, and could not have done it without you

PROPOSED 2016-2017 SCHOOL YEAR
CALENDAR—HAVE YOUR SAY!
The Simcoe County District School Board
(SCDSB) invites public school communities to submit input
regarding the proposed school calendar for next school year
(September 2016 to June 2017). Input can be provided by visiting
www.scdsb.on.ca, then clicking the link on the ‘School Year
Calendars’ page under the ‘Schools’ menu. All stakeholders,
including staff, school council members, parents/guardians,
students and members of the school community are invited to
provide input. Feedback is invited until Friday January 15th 2016
to ensure the SCDSB meets school year calendar development
timelines set by the Ministry of Education.
THANK YOU GEORGIAN COLLEGE
On behalf of the students and staff, we would like to
thank the Georgian College PSWs that came to our
school in December to conduct Head Lice Checks. We
thank them for their time and assistance with this matter.
HOCKEY DAY IN COLLINGWOOD 2016!
Wednesday January 13th
Come cheer on our Cameron Comet Hockey Team at the Central Park
Arena.
Game times are 9am, 11am and 1pm.
BE ON TIME FOR THE NEW YEAR!
A friendly reminder that to ensure your child has
the best possible start to their day, that our Entry
Bell rings at 8:55am. Being late—even 10
minutes—can impact their learning and their
readiness for that day’s activities. Start the new year off
right—be on time for school! RECOGNIZE A STAR AT YOUR SCHOOL!
Our employee recognition program, SCDSB STARS,
provides the opportunity for members of the school
community to nominate an outstanding SCDSB teacher,
custodian, educational assistant, early childhood educator,
administrator, office staff person, etc. who has done something
wonderful to support students in our system. Nominees will be
informed of the nomination and the staff person will receive a
personalized thank you and commemorative lapel pin from our
Director of Education. It’s just one way to recognize the shining stars in
our education system who make a difference every day in our schools,
facilities and classrooms.
Nominate an outstanding staff person by visiting www.scdsb.on.ca and
clicking on ‘Staff’, then ‘SCDSB Stars.’
BLAST OFF WITH BREAKFAST!
Eating breakfast is one of the surest ways to
get your family off to a positive start to their
day! Both researchers and educators think
breakfast is important and necessary to
support the learning potential of children.
Breakfast does not have to be complicated—here are some
quick breakfast fixes:
Whole wheat tortilla wrap with cheese and salsa
Rice cakes, cheese sticks and canned peaches
Smoothie shake made with fruit, yogurt and milk
Cereal trail mix, banana and yogurt
Whole wheat pita spread with light cream cheese and
wrapped around a banana
With these breakfast ideas, the whole family will rise, shine and
save time! For more information, you can call Health Connec-
tion at 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-5720 and speak with a public
health nurse or visit the health unit’s website at
www.simcoemuskokahealth.org.
WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH SLEEP???
Getting enough sleep is a big deal for children. Sleep is
important for normal brain development, physical
growth and development and emotional control.
Children 3 to 12 years of age should get 10 to 12 hours
of quality sleep.
A lack of sleep can lead to:
Behavioural problems, hyperactivity, poor memory and attention
Irritability, frustration and even aggression
Weight gain due to an increased appetite
Here are some tips to help develop healthy sleeping habits:
Set up a consistent bedtime routine
Limit screen time (i.e. tv, laptops, iPod) or collect devices before
bedtime
If your child has difficulties staying asleep, speak with your
healthcare provider
