Dear Readers
Welcome to 2015 and this edition of the Tradewinds Newsletter I am excited for the new year
and what we have in store for you Since becoming the director of OASIS in 2012 the goal has
been to increase participation at the Luis Oasis Senior Center by bringing in the services you
want and need In many ways the members of OASIS make this an easy task because you are
straight forward with me If we are missing something or can do things better you arenrsquot
afraid to let us know Thank you for your honesty because the information you provide is
valuable and crucial for our programming In addition to your comments we gave you a sur-
vey last year and the results were very helpful Thank you for taking the time to fill it out
I am happy to report that there have been 23 new classes and programs added at the OASIS
since 2012 which doesnrsquot include the special presentations regularly scheduled each
Thursday In addition to the collection of classes and programs that have been here for
several years (many for more than 20) the new classes reflect the changing interests and needs
of the population we serve As a result of the new programming OASIS membership has in-
creased from 450 members in 2011 to nearly 900 by the end of 2014
I understand that there have been adjustments made by our regular attendees to
accommodate the increase of usage and the busyness of scheduling Thank you for your
patience with us and for understanding that we are trying hard to do good Itrsquos inevitable that
wersquoll have ldquogrowing painsrdquo along the way I must also commend my staff for keeping these
instances at a minimum
In order to facilitate the changes the OASIS Board of Directors has been incredibly
supportive and courageous They believe in the direction we are headed and had the faith in
me to bring in the additional staff I needed to take OASIS where it needs to go They are a
modest group and operate behind the scenes but so instrumental to the success of this organi-
zation Itrsquos a privilege to work with them and learn from them We are in excellent hands un-
der their guidance
The 6th Annual GALA ldquoSeniors Building Communityrdquo is scheduled for Friday
March 20 2015 at the Santa Maria Country Club More information to come
With the first Tradewinds of 2015 itrsquos fitting that I close with an update about the relocation
of OASIS I keep hearing the rumors that are swirling around Some say we are moving to
ldquothis placerdquo while others are saying to ldquothat placerdquo (or not at all) Please donrsquot buy in to any
rumor mill talk When there is actual information that I can share then you will be the first to
know I ask for your patience because this is a very delicate process and it must be done the
right way If the information doesnrsquot come directly from me it should be disregarded That
being said we it appears we have a bright future in store
Doug

Doug
