President’s Message – January 2015

My term as President has been completed and we have several new club officers and Boardmembers taking up their new posions. These are challenging mes and I applaud the fine efforts that we have made and I am sure good things will connue to happen. Listed below are some of the significant things that have been accomplished on your behalf over the last two years:-Amended the club Constuon to allow dues increases annually as needed and raised the adult dues for 2015 to meet our club financial requirements-Changed the membership renewal deadline from May 31st to March 31st of the following year-Obtained a new copier with toner and service included in the lease-Updated the club website to issue eblasts and enhance communicaons with our members-Clarified and permied commercial uses of the club with Board approval-Started orientaon of new members and charged an orientaon fee-Established a guest pass program at the club-Developed a range officer program and added cerficaon as NRA Range Safety Officers-Clarified the club budgeng process for commiees and their programs-Changed the age when junior members are considered adult members from age 16 to age 18-Constructed new target holders for the 25 yard rangeThank you for your paence and support. I wish you all the best in the future.

Firearms Safety on the rangeOver the past year we have received several reports of unsafe gun handling on our rifle, pistol and trap ranges. Children through senior cizens have been reported for unsafe gun handling. Everyone who owns a firearm should know the Fundamental NRA Rules for Safe Gun Handling. The Ontelaunee Rod and Gun Club range rules reflect all of the NRA safety rules.

It is the responsibility of the every person who owns or handles a firearm to know these fundamental NRA Safety Rules.

#1 ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direcon.#2 ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger unl ready to shoot.

#3 ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded unl ready to use. At Ontelaunee two of the most important range rules are “Always keep the gun pointed downrange” - “Never handle a gun while someone is down range” and “When not in use all firearm acons must be open and unloaded “. Always treat every firearm as if it is loaded. Never handle a gun unsafely because you think it is unloaded. Ontelaunee now trains Range Safety Officers to work on the ranges periodically. When you see a range officer at the range treat them with respect and thank them for keeping our ranges safe.

If you have quesons about firearms safety please contact [email protected]

FINANCIAL – Ray DeFrain (Treasurer) The Club’s financial posion connued to be very good during 2014. Major projects completed were: the installaon of an automac clubhouse generator, the purchase of a backhoe, a newle floor for the clubhouse southern half, evaluaon and redesign of the clubhouse sewage

system for both bathrooms, and the installaon of an enclosure over the basement entrance. For the most part, the funds for these projects were provided from the Spring and Fall Raffles

and the 52 Weeker profits. It is because of the excellent financial support we received from the membership who aended and supported these events that the Club was able to pay for these major improvements. The Club also maintains a land fund for the purchase of any properes the would be beneficial for Club ownership. The club wishes to thank all that support these

efforts for without them we could not make the necessary capital improvements nor meet the required expenditures. Thanks again for all your support and I hope to see you at the club.

2014 DONATIONS - $16,209This year the club received the following donaons – misc. donaons amounted to

$6,776. Land donaons from members was $9,433. We received $100 from the Heidelberg Game Protecve Associaon and a donaon of $1,000 from the “Women in the Outdoors.”

We received $997 from members for our fish program.

In the past the club would mail the results of the monthly winners to some of the people who sold 52 weeker ckets. The new policy is to post the winners on the web site. Go towww.ontelaunee.org then look under the heading “Other Club Events”. You will now see a list of the winners with their cket numbers. We sll have a few 2014 ckets available that will go unl September of 2014. The 2015 ckets are available and the drawings for those ckets are held from October 2015—September of 2016. ATA TrapGreengs. It was my pleasure to run the ATA Registered Shoots here at Ontelaunee Rod and Gun Club. As we all know the success of this program cannot take place without the strong

support of people like Kurt Rodenbach and Sco Reinhard along with Warren, Freddie, Gene,Pete and Mike helping score keep and trap filling, a BIG Thanks. Let’s not forget the kitchen help with some good food and a friendly smile. We threw over 20 thousand targets and are going to expand our shoots to a new BIG 50 event program on Thursdays during the months of April and

May. Please note, I have 5 free ATA memberships for the target year 2015 for first me shooters, (contact me at a shoot).

And last but first in my book are the shooters who come out and support the program with out them our success would not take place--so again come out and have some fun and bring a

friend. Hope to see you in the spring at a shoot.Thank You John Hosak

Clay compeon Aug 23 201456 shooters parcipated in our first annual clays compeon, 25 targets were shot at each skeet, regular trap wobble trap and internaonal trap. Come out Aug 22 2015 and try our clays compeon. Last years winners were, High over all 91 Tom Motzkus

Skeet – a year in review

Aer a year of operaon, our new skeet installaon has been a mild success. Thursday evenings in parcular has seen a dozen shooters rounely. Skeet is opened Thursday between 3 & 4 PM unl sunset from the beginning of April unl the end of October. It is also possible to shoot Saturday 10 AM - 4 PM all year upon request, just ask Warren. Cost is $4.50 if you bring your own shells, typically # 8 or 9 shot low brass target loads. You can use any shotgun you own. As it is good pracce for wingshoong, your hunng shotgun works well. Typically a more wide open choke is used, but if you do not have interchangeable chokes that's OK too.

This year as menoned elsewhere we held a combinaon clays shoot involving Skeet, American and Wobble Trap plus Internaonal Bunker Trap. The shoot was 100 birds total with prizesawarded for many categories.

If you never shot skeet or any of the trap disciplines, you are more than welcomed to come out and try. Anyone interested in trying skeet can contact me at rober[email protected] and we can meet up at the club, Thursday aernoons or evenings are preferred. I'll be glad to show you how skeet is shot, as it is not complicated, but like any sport it has it's rules and techniques. We all had to learn at some point and it doesn't take long to break the majority of the birds on the course.

Raffle Commiee

Our club is looking for a new person to run our club raffles. Our club runs primarilyon volunteers. This is an important posion that needs to be filled as soon as

possible. Currently we have a volunteer who temporarily took this on for a limitedme. Please call 610-298-2265 if you are interested in helping the club.

Internaonal Trap 2014 was another good year at the Int’l Trap range. We welcomed half-a-dozen or so new juniors to Ontelaunee and stand ready to help them achieve their Internaonal shoong goals. We were pleased to receive - and wish to pass along to the membership at large - the compliments we got about how good looking our range is aer the work crew repainted everything last fall.We are happy that our two matches drew an increased aendance this year over last and wehad some new shooters who have come back. Also, we added a compeon to our program for 2014: our summer match – in addion to being the Grand Prix of America - is also a compe-on in memory of Shel Gitman who was a fixture at the Ontelaunee bunker from 1988 unl his death last year. Finally, we hope that everyone enjoyed the Combinaon Clay Compeon as much as we did. We thank Roger Wanamaker for organizing that and look forward to it again next year.As always, we invite everyone to stop down during our pracces and say, “Hi.” Even if you don’t shoot, you may get to try some tasty food because something’s usually on the grill. As 2014 comes to a close, we look forward to 2015 and hope this winter won’t be as bad as the last one.

Game Commiee Terry Groman The pheasant season has come and gone. The club Has had a good season of raising and stocking pheasants. Many thanks to all who helped this year John Maury, Ed and Ted Razzis, Pete Chromiak, and to the club members who donated money, as well as the landowners where the birds were stocked. Thanks to East Penn Rebuilders for donang cash and supplies this year. If you have a young hunter in the family, don't forget the youth hunt (12 to 16 years old) that runs October 10 unl October17, 2015, we will be stocking on the 10th.Please remember tostop and ask before you hunt on a farmer's land. We do not want to lose the landowners trust. Happy hunng!

Jr Rifle TeamThe Ontelaunee Jr Rifle Team won the Lehigh Valley Prone League for the 3rd year in a row.

This accomplishment has rered the grand overall trophy to our club showcase. Congratulaons on great shoong by all of our team members. The juniors whose scores counted 3 mes or more towards the team total were, Brenton Riegel, Sarah & Kaitlyn Frantz, Luke Chromiak, William Dixon, & Gage Hunsicker.

We entered 3 teams in the PA Jr Olympic Regional Championships. Our team of William Dixon, Amy Fister, & Zach Strohl are the 2014 PA State Champions, aer winning in both air rifle & smallbore. Individually, William won bronze medals for both disciplines, Amy won gold & state champion tle for woman's air rifle, & Zach won gold & state champion tle for men's smallbore & silver for air rifle. They also qualified for invitaons to the Naonal Jr Olympics in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where Amy was high shooter for day 2 of 3-P smallbore, won the final, & placed 5th overall. These same 3 are currently aending college with help from rifle scholarships. William has started his freshman year as a “Wildcat” for the University of Kentucky.

Amy & William competed in the USA Naonals at Fort Benning, Georgia. Their individual combined scores added from this match & Jr Olympics, placed Amy 4th in 3-P SB & William 4th in Prone SB. They both missed Naonal Team selecon for the World Championships in Granada, Spain, by just one posion.

Our top CMP postal team members William Dixon, Brenton Riegel, Megan Waidelich, Kerry Kerschner, & Gage Hunsicker secured & accepted an invitaon for the regional match at Camp Perry, Ohio. Several shot personal best & all had a great me gathering Naonal match experience.

Megan & William competed in the NRA Naonals at Bristol, Indiana, where Will earned a spot on the Drew Cup Team. This was the 1st me the Naonals were held at Bristol instead of Camp Perry, Ohio, & the general feeling was like that of a local match.

We currently have two juniors who have completed the level 1 coach cerficaon class &are now cerfied Jr coaches. Congratulaons to Kaitlyn Frantz & Megan Waidelich.

We connue to host numerous matches including, 2 NRA Jr seconals, 4 air rifle matches including American Legion & CMP, 1 NRA 3-P regional, & 2 NRA outdoor prone including 1 regional. Our plans are to connue hosng these fine matches for our juniors & others to compete in.

Thank you Ontelaunee for providing 2 new air rifles for the junior program & for all of yourconnued support. Congratulaons to all our junior members who connue to grow as competors &young adults.

Fish CommieeThe 2014 fishing contest was one of the best contests yet! The Junior fishing contest had the kids fishing with a frenzy; there was one catch aer the other. It was non-stop! I think almost all of the Juniors had their limit early. I would like to see even more Juniors out in 2015. No membership or badge is needed, they just need to be accompanied by a Senior member. The adults also had a good oung on Sunday. It is always a lile more challenging to get their limit on Monday. I would like to thank the commiee helpers, and also a huge thank you to Linda Schock for all ofher help, from the chili to her bean soup to ordering badges, taking care of memberships, and bringing all the candy. I will miss her help both before the contests and the day of. Happy Rerement, Linda!Thank you to the members who donated me and/or money for the fish program. Senior Rifle Commiee Annual Report 2014 During 2014, we held a total of twelve high power rifle matches and had a nearly one hundred shooters parcipate in these events. There were a number of very high scores recorded at these matches and a several shooters are classified as experts or high masters. We connue to generate interest in these high power rifle matches and have welcomed a number of new shooters. The club is providing a useful service by holding these matches and we connue todraw shooters from across the region and out of state. Ontelaunee has achieved a reputaon for running excellent high power rifle matches and promptly sending out scores to parcipants. We were able to generate over one thousand dollars in income from match fees and expect to run the same number of matches in 2015. When the new ranges are completed it may be possible to hold addional matches and expand the number of shooters who pursue these events. I appreciate the loyal support from the parcipants and from the club to allow us to connue providing these NRA approved matches. Submied by Richard L. Benjamin, Chairman

Archery Team - Chairman Rick Kline, Co-Chairman Jesse White

The Archery Team had another successful year. We again managed to win The Blue Mountain Archery League scratch Trophy (The Teamwith the Highest Average for the Year), and also won the league trophy for the team with the highest average of the day at the championship shoot. League trophy winner's were: Gavin Schmidt Comp 1st place; Rick Kline Hunter advance 1st place; Sheldon Schmidt Hunter Class 1st place; Erik Kline Cub Class Trophy. Also

several team members compete through out the year at other Archery events, as individuals oras 2 or 3 man teams. The largest tournament is the IBO World Championship Archery Fesval, and this year it was held at the Holiday Valley Mountain Resort in Ellicoville, New York. The team had 4 members compete this year: Lucas Soolano YMR Class finishing 13th, Shane WhiteMBO Class finishing 47th, Jesse White MSR Class finishing 41st and Gavin Schmidt MBO Class finishing 2nd with a score of 485-21X's. The team is very proud of the accomplishments of the Archery Team, but without the help of Dawn, Connie, George, Dale, Gavin, Sheldon, and Danielle Schmidt, Brian, Chrissy, and Lucas Soolano, Pam and Erik Kline, Shane and Tammy White, and Colt Seltzer, we could not run our league shoots. Thank you all for the kitchen help, course layouts, set up's and teardown of targets. We greatly appreciate it. Remember we will be shoong indoors every friday night starng January 2nd @ 6:30 pm. Our scheduled 3-D shootsfor the 2015 season are as follows: March 8th, April 12th, May 3rd, and July 12th. Please come join us for Friday night fun shoots, or one of our scheduled 3-D league shoots. Pistol Report - Tom OlewineOnce again another season of pistol shoong has come to a close. It was a very good year, except for 1 bad Steel match due to the weather. All the matches were well aended with some having over 100 shooters. This coming year should be another great year with all the help from the guys that come out to help set up and tear down and run the matches. Next years Steel matches will be March 29th and Aug 23rd.This past year we saw the return of USPSA return to Ontelaunee. With the leadership of Joe and Sean Roberts these matches have grown to be very popular and well aended. Each match sawthe number of shooters increase at each match with one match having over 100 shooters. Nextyear they will be having local matches along with a Regional match. The dates for next year are April 26th, May 24th, June 28th, July 26th, Sept 27th and the Regional match being Oct 23, 24, and 25. Also this past year there were 2 Run and Gun matches along with a couple of night matches which helped a lot of new shooters get started in the shoong sports. Next year there will be matches on June 7th and Aug 30th. You will have to check the web site to see if they are planning any night shoots or contact Tim Miller at [email protected] for more informaon. Also last year we had 2 ICORE Matches with one of the matches being a classifier and the other being a Regional match. Next year dates for these matches are May 31th which will be a Regional match and Oct 11th which I hope will be another Classifier match. For more informaon on any of these shoots or any pistol informaon contact me, Tom Olewine at 610-767-8919 or Tim Miller at [email protected]. I hope to see a lot of you next year. Thanks again to all the people that help set up and tear down and who run the matches.
