MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Greetings,

To say that I’m falling in love with Corbin might be a little pre-mature, but since Valentine’s Day is fast approaching I’ll go ahead and run with it. I am contin-

ually amazed by Corbin’s members and their steadfast com-mitment to ensure this beloved institution is thriving for each generation of Spokane’s seniors. In fact, if you are keeping track I’m happy to point out that Corbin is entering its 50th year of operation and make no mistake, we will not let this golden anniversary pass without its due celebration. So be on the lookout for more revelry to come in 2017!

In addition, I’m happy to announce that Corbin has been chosen to receive a $55,000 grant from the Community, Housing, and Human Services Department. This means big things for Corbin and be sure to check out the article on page 7 which highlights where this money has been earmarked. This is a big deal for Corbin and we would like to thank the City of Spokane, the CHHS Department, and all those in-volved for making this happen.

It’s an exciting time to be a part of Corbin and it couldn’t happen without you. Our annual Miss Corbin campaign, which conveniently became a Mr. Corbin campaign this year, raised over $2,000 from your generosity. Never underesti-mate the impact your donations make to Corbin be they large or small. With over 1,000 members a simple gift of $10 from each could raise $10,000 overnight. Corbin belongs to its members and it will forever be supported by its members and volunteers. I renew my pledge to steward your generos-ity well in the years to come if you’ll continue to have me.

I hope to see everyone at the Valentine’s lunch on Febru-ary 10th! We have all you can eat spaghetti provided by the Spokane Italian Club along with salad, bread, beverages and more! In addition, we’ve lined up entertainment that should provide the perfect lounge environment for this full-service Valentines event. Bring your loved ones, friends, neighbors and family to be a part of the action at Corbin. And congrats again on 50 years of serving Spokane!

January 4 - 24 Nancy Tautakawa, Martha Kurtz, Wes & Barb Seyfert, Donna Harris, Dick & Cheryl Dolan, Francis Remsik, Mary Ellen Green, Chuck & Gwen Porche, Gwen Margolis, Conifer Defour.

WAFFLES PLUS Come for a great breakfast!

RECORD-SETTING EAGLE-WATCHING On December 30 Ron Krueger took a group of Corbin members on a Lake Coeur d'Alene eagle-watching cruise. And they saw an astound-ing 167 bald eagles! The previous record on this cruise was a mere 97 eagles. Jane Veltkamp of Birds of Prey Northwest was the "eagle eye" spotter. Bald eagles are at Lake Coeur d'Alene in December and

January to feed on Kokanee (land locked sockeye salmon) that have just spawned and are dying.

Here the cruisers are having a post-sighting lunch at Beverly's. (Photos courtesy of Kermit Shaull, who was part of the group.)

A New Website for a New Future

We are excited to announce that in the coming months Corbin Senior Activity Center will be rolling out a brand new website. Courtesy of Rogue Heart Media, Corbin will be developing a modern professional website with all the functionality we need to carry us into the future. Through a combination of a grant and the commitment to community of Rogue Heart Media, our new website will allow us to process payments, donations, and most importantly tell the story of Corbin to the world. Be on the lookout for more updates over the coming months and if you see a camera crew at Corbin, be sure to smile because our new website is about to make you famous!

A Safe and Secure Corbin for All! As you are all aware, the construction of our elevator is well under way. As far as we can tell, it is right on schedule for a March completion. But what you may not be aware of yet is that Corbin is about to get a new facelift that will ensure our building is safe, clean, and secure for the future. I’m happy to announce that Corbin has been selected to receive a $55,000 grant from the Community, Housing and Human Services Department!

Throughout Corbin, you will have noticed that many of our carpeted areas have utilized a patchwork of carpet over the years that has become worn, slick, and frayed in many places. Given the emphasis of fall prevention, a portion of this grant has been marked to re-carpet the entire Center excluding the staff office. More than looking amazing, this will provide the safest platform for our members to enjoy all that Corbin has to offer in this building. But wait, there’s more!

To further enhance the safety of members enjoying the Center, Corbin will be adding an external security camera system. We believe this will help serve as a deterrent to local crime in our area. It will also ensure that if crime does happen here, Corbin gets to help see to it the criminals get a little Senior Center justice! We hope that this will encourage the feeling of safety as you access this building through our variety of events. And, you get to find out who it was that dinged your car in the parking lot! But yes, there is still more.

We will be redesigning the Lincoln Street entrance with some additional safety and accessibility features to ensure easier use for the members and various renters who have had issues with that door. The redesign will fix that problem and at the same time enhance its security features. In addition, the door will become ADA accessible and enhance the overall accessibility of the center.

From our new elevator to these enhanced safety and security features, Corbin’s future will be looking brighter than ever. We want to extend a heartfelt thanks to the City of Spokane and the CHHS Department for taking care of Spokane’s seniors. It’s great time to be a part of Corbin and I hope to see you soon.
