The Audrey Nelson Community Development Achievement Award

• CBS news program "60 Minutes" caused a national sensation in March, 2011 with a report on homeless families living in Central Florida motels.

• A follow-up report by the CBS reporter interviewed several homeless children in the county. All said their parents are homeless and unemployed.

• At this time there are 1,100 homeless children living in Seminole County, Florida.

Heart to Heart: a Community Care Home, Inc. is dedicated to the needs of homeless and low income women and children overcoming abuse issues, some with alcohol and drugs, by providing housing, support and investing in their futures. We help the women become self-sufficient and able to live in the community independently with their children. Heart to Heart is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization serving Central Florida since 1992. Collaboration with County Governments and CDBG/HOME grants are key to ending homelessness in the community.

• H2H in collaboration with Seminole County, Florida CDBG/Home Grant Funds is fulfilling the National Objectives for low income persons including those with special needs and disabilities.

• The Seminole County rehabbed housing is a sound investment socially and economically in the community. The housing is the first step to provide safety for the families, relieving emotional and financial stress in their lives. And helping to support the independence of the family.

100% of the women have experienced severe losses, mental illness, abuse and violence in their lives along with living in poverty. Some have legal issues and felonies.

This project serves 10 adults & 12 children, average adult age is 29, child’s 6 The project provides safe, stable, economical housing 100% of the families have food, transportation and health care 100% of the women are working in the job force with appropriate childcare 70% are in school, 10% are getting their GED, a certificate or a college degree 100% of the women are poised to be independent and financially self sufficient with

their children to be able to live in the community.
