GENERAL MEETING MINUTES – DECEMBER 17, 2013
A short meeting was called to order by President David Rapp at our annual Christmas dinner.
Cathy Reynolds entertained us with a lovely solo of “Oh Holy Night.”
Mike Shaw and Tim Cejka have been going to schools and other places promoting our hobby and David showed us a “Thank You Poster” sent to Mike and Tim from the Valley
Echo Camp.
The slate of proposed officers, as printed in the November bulletin, was read. Since there were no nominations from the floor, the membership voted to accept the slate of officers as presented.
Kathleen Govett was presented with the 2013 Rock Rollers Hall of Fame certificate for her many hours of work and dedication to the club. Her name has been added to
the Hall of Fame plaque that hangs in the club house.
Mike Shaw’s name was submitted to and accepted by the NFMS as our 2013 Rockhound of the year. He will be receiving a certificate in the near future. There was a nice

PROGRAM FOR JANUARY – Mike Shaw
This month's program will be Doug Huigen, author of “CATACLYSM: When Human Stories Meet
Earth's Faults.” It's the story of the 1959 earthquake and resulting landslides in the Yellowstone area.
From the Publisher's Website: How do people react when a combination of their choices and pure
chance spares them from certain death? Such was the situation one night fifty years ago when an earthquake-produced rockslide buried a forest campground and killed 28 persons in
southwestern Montana. Survivors were only a few feet away from death. Of one family of six, four died. For terrified hours, temporal human life interfaced with natural forces millennia in the
making. It was the largest earthquake ever recorded in the Rocky Mountains. Earth scientists differed then and now about how to interpret the quake and its relation to volatile Yellowstone
volcanic potential and hydrothermal explosiveness nearby. It is a story of earth-building unfolded before us-its wonders as well as its terrors.

SHOP NEWS – Mike Shaw
We're going to be opening up the shop for additional hours. Jim Rundlett will be opening the
shop from 9 am until 12 noon on Wednesdays. The routine will be the same, sign in on the roster and clean up when you're done. Jim will need help with this from time to time, so we'll
need an occasional volunteer to open when he won't be available.
We're going to leave the door locks unchanged for the time being and try another tactic. If
people would please sign the roster on the front table when they come into the shop and pay if they're using the machines, or state what they are doing, such as “Equipment Maintenance,”
“Executive Board Meeting,” “Warehouse,” etc. We'll try the honor system for awhile; of course, if
it doesn't work, the locks will have to be changed.

CLASSES – Mike Shaw
Karen Snyder will be offering wirewrapping classes on Saturday, February 22nd. There will be a beginning class starting at 9 am, and an intermediate class beginning at 1 pm. The cost is $35.00
plus the wire needed for the class. Silver is available for about $2.00 a foot and copper is available for 50 cents a foot from Karen. Tools will be provided. Bring a cabochon you would like
to wrap. A sign up sheet is available at the shop and at the general meeting.
FIRST NIGHT – Mike Shaw
For the first time, we were part of the Kids Night Out program at First Night Spokane this year. It was a great success, both
for the community and for Spokane Rock Rollers. It let
everyone know a little more about us, advertised our show and contributed to a fun, safe night on the town for the kids. The
First Night people were pleased with us and the participants from our club had a blast. Jim Rundlett organized the event
and Dale and Al Ruperd, Fred and Nathan Peck, Tom Long and Rebecca (Becky) Potter helped make the night a success. And
thanks to Jim's wife Betti Rundlett for her behind the scenes support. We hope to be back next year.
FIELD TRIPS – Mike Shaw
On Thursday, February 6th, we'll be going to Mario and Son Granite and Marble, the largest fabricator of granite and marble in the northwest. Mario is an active member of our club and an
exceptional artist in stone. His facility has some of the most beautiful stone you'll ever see, and some of the things they do with it is breathtaking. Joey, Mario's son who has taken over the
operation, will give us a personal tour of the showroom and huge fabrication facility, where we can see how stone is cut, shaped and polished to make beautiful countertops and other stone
creations, like we do at our lapidary shop, only on a grander scale. We'll be able to go through some of his waste piles for beautiful thick slabs of material, much of it suitable for cabbing. We'll
meet and leave from the shop at 9:30 am, or meet at Mario's at 10 am. His business address is
2750 N. Eagle Lane in Liberty Lake. Please sign up either at the shop, the general meeting or by contacting Mike Shaw at 251-1574, as an accurate count is needed for attending this field trip.
We have a couple more new field trips scheduled for next summer. One is to Chewelah on Sunday, August 17th, for Beryl, a six-sided crystal. Some gemstones are made of beryl, such as
aquamarine and emeralds. The ones found in the Chewelah area aren't facet grade, but two to six-inch display specimens can be found.
The next new field trip is on Sunday, August 24th, to the Big Iron Mine near Pierre Lake up by Kettle Falls. We'll find pyrite in magnetite, also known as “Healers Gold.” It makes everything
black when you work it and smells like sulfur, but it makes a beautiful cab. It is considered to
have metaphysical properties, also.

SCIENCE FAIRS – Mike Shaw
Rock Rollers put on a presentation at Otis Orchards Elementary January 16th. We gave a little history of petrified wood and told how we polish it and how it is formed. Jim Rundlett showed
how a cab is made and how it is wirewrapped. He has a display with a rock in various stages from a rough slab to a finished, wirewrapped pendant. It makes for a much easier explanation of
the process. Interest was high from the kids as usual, with each of them able to take home a piece of tumbled petrified wood. Some of the parents showed an interest in joining the club,
some in accompanying us on field trips, and some on attending the show. Appropriate brochures were handed out to those who showed interest. We're going to make a special simplified flyer
just for such events so we can announce the show and give basic club information for those
interested. We have at least two more science fairs to attend this year scheduled and may have more as the season is upon us.

COMPETITOR’S SHOW CASE INFORMATION
• You are competing against yourself to improve your work and your showmanship.
• When you decide what you want to enter the competition chair will give you the rules
which cover your entry.
• You will decide if you want to enter as a Junior, Novice, Advanced or Masters. A master
may not enter the same exhibit for three (3) years, except under a different category.
• You shall not put any card or name in the case. Entering competition is to be kept a
secret from everyone except the Competition Chair.
• On the day of judging (probably Saturday morning) competent judges in the field of your
entry will judge your case according to the rules you were to follow.
• These may include all of the categories shown in the Uniform Rules.
• Your score and the judges’ comments will be posted on your case as soon as available.
This is not to be removed until the end of the show.
Each competition is awarded points and, according to your score, you will receive a 1st, 2nd or 3rd
prize ribbon. You will receive a plaque/trophy for competing.
