I am pleased to say that the North Florida RTMCground breaking event held on January 10th atthe State of Florida complex was a hugesuccess for all involved. Many of the organizerswere very nervous as the event drew near,wondering if the weather would warm up andstay dry. You couldn’t blame them after therecord cold that hit Jacksonville the week beforethe ceremony but luckily Mother Nature playednice this time. She even decided to stop rainingabout an hour before the event kicked off just toinsure no late cancellations due to weatherwould occur. It was lucky for us that thisoccurred because we ended up having a largerthan expected attendance for this event thusmaking this a huge success for the Departmentand North Florida TPO.

It ended up being an indoor/outdoor event wherewe utilized the FDLE training facility for the pre-event reception and a tent outside for the officialceremony. For those of you that didn’t have theopportunity to attend all I can say is you missedpoetry in motion. Inside the training facility therewere several videos displayed, power pointpresentations at every corner of the building andan equipment exhibit to boot. I was happy tohear the compliments from a number of guestswho really learned more than they expectedabout the benefits that this new RTMC will bringto the area. The displays helped put all thepieces together for them thereby leading to agreater understanding of this facility’simportance once the speakers opened theceremony.

The North Florida TPO Director, Jeff Sheffield,kicked things off splendidly then he passed thebaton to our District Secretary, Greg Evans, whothen passed the baton to Representative LakeRay. Our final speaker was FHP LieutenantColonel Duarte who provided a clear messageon the benefits in coordinating our response toroadway events within this inter-agency facility.

The event ended with the ceremonial shovelingof dirt and then we all called it a day. This wasa grandiose way to say “it’s time to get to workto make this a reality” so the team is now fullsteam ahead in getting construction of theRTMC under way. I received a funny commentnear the end of the ceremony that I thought Ishould share. One of the attendees came upto me and wondered how nervous I was aboutthis event. Looked him square in the eye andsaid “Nervous? Me? Hell, I’m just happy tofinally get to this point.” I will now share thehistory that led to this comment.

During the summer of 2003 I was still a naïveITS Engineer who was wet behind the ears andlooking for a way to upgrade our program. I’dbeen to the Minneapolis, Orlando and MiamiTMCs that housed multiple agencies under oneroof. I quickly realized that in order to trulymanage roadway traffic there had to be aconcerted effort amongst multiple agencies,working in unison inside a common facility withthe goal of keeping all lanes cleared. Soonthereafter Governor Bush opened up anopportunity to achieve this goal with theadvancement of construction funds forStrategic Intermodal System type projects. Atthe time I thought Jacksonville’s chances werelike a snowball’s chance in hell but it wouldn’thurt to try, so I gave it a shot.

We were competing against freight, roadwayand transit projects so the possibility of thisRTMC project even being in the top twentywere slim to none. Then a miracle happenedalong the way! First, I utilized every asset andpartner within our North Florida ITS Coalition todraft a proposal that would’ve brought tears toyour eyes. I then lobbied our Central OfficeITS folks on the value that this new RTMCwould bring to the North Florida region with thehope that they would be able to convince our

Central Office management that this was animportant step in the growth of Florida’s ITSprogram. My last gasp effort was to try and winover our District Planning Office by explainingthe added value this facility would provide tofuture SIS components like freight, roadway andtransit projects.

Later that year I received notification that ourproject made the cut and thought “holy crap,what the heck have I done?” See, the District’sITS program was in its infancy so we still had notproven our value to the Department. That’swhen the butterflies kicked in because my firstthought was (gulp) I think I put the cart beforethe horse. The RTMC project would be our mostexpensive endeavor yet and I still hadn’t evenparticipated in the design or completion of myfirst ever ITS project. Once I shook it off it wastime to get the plan in motion so I turned to ourvalued partners in the Planning Office andNFTPO.

Ironically, the Jacksonville TransportationAuthority (JTA) also received SIS funding tobuild a Jacksonville Transportation Centercomplex that would incorporate a bus transferstation interconnected with the Skyway. Thecomplex was to include area for a GreyhoundBus depot and access to a future Amtrak railstation. The final piece of their plan was to havean operations facility and transit managementcenter facility somewhere within the complex.Obviously, the SIS funding they received wasnot enough to pay for it all so they hoped thatmatching Federal funds of up to 80% wouldcover the rest. Then a light bulb went off in ourPlanning Office leading to what has been a 10year journey to our current situation.

The Planning Office approached me about thepossibility of combining the RTMC project

(funding of $9.5 million) with the JTA project(funding of $9 million) and some local funds.The total sum of this combination neared $25million, thus providing the opportunity for us toreceive FTA matching funds of approximately$70+ million. It was a no brainer, right?Guess again. I quickly learned that nothingwas guaranteed when it comes to Federalfunds and we were soon on a path to a verypainful experience with the RTMC project.The game plan was to build the facility andcomplex on property across from the PrimeOsborn just west of downtown Jacksonville.We went as far as 100% plans and were readyto move, then the bottom dropped out.

The goal was to begin construction some timein 2006 or 2007, just about the same time thatthe economy hit the dumps. Soon thereafterwe were notified that all pending SIS projectswere on hold and moved out several yearsuntil Department funding levels returned tonorm. It seemed that every year thereafterthis project was pushed further and further outin the Work Program. Fortunately for us theNorth Florida TPO realized the importance ofthis multi-agency facility so they adopted theproject using their SU and CMAQ funds sothat this project could begin construction muchsooner. Just like that this project became areality and here we are just months away fromstarting construction.

It hasn’t been easy and the experiencesworking with the Department of Managementmade me feel that this project has been snakebit from the start. Luckily, we are overcomingall recent obstacles and the Ground Breakingceremony should push the “pedal to the metal”as we head towards the finish line. in the DROP program reaches the end so pleasekeep your fingers crossed that no new issuesstop us along the way.

Next month I will discuss another much neededproject that is finally kicking off after a successfulGround Breaking ceremony held on January21st. I will rehash the I-75 Paynes Prairieceremony that introduces ITS to the western halfof District Two. Hopefully, this will be the start ofa much needed system along that corridorthrough Gainesville and all the way to Georgia.

NORTH FLORIDA TPO UPDATE

The RTMC Ground Breaking ceremony gave mea chance to reflect back on just how importantthis organization has been not only to the ITSProgram in District Two but Florida’s ITSprogram as a whole. At the ceremony weprovided displays and information on all theprojects they have funded using their SU, CMAQand box funds. Let’s see, they have helped fundthe upgrade of traffic signal controllers on anumber of Department corridors throughoutnorth Florida, helped make us the largestregional deployment of BlueToad devices in theENTIRE WORLD, allowed us to develop thenation’s first bridge wind sensor decision makingtool, put us in competition for an IntegratedCorridor Management grant and made our TIMteam program one of the strongest in theDepartment.

In support of the TIM team they havecontributed nearly half of the annual funding forour Road Ranger Program, led thedevelopment/distribution of the nationallyrecognized TIMe4Safety training CD, providedthe support for the bridge wind sensor study,

provided seed funding for deployment/testing oftraffic signal preemption for emergencyresponders and created a contract forconsultant support of the ITS program. In asense, they are committed to insuring that ouremergency responders and law enforcementhave all the tools necessary to improveperformance while increasing safety. Also,keep in mind that these are only a few of theprojects they have funded over the years.

I’ve mentioned it before but must do it againwhen I reference all of the calls I get from otherMPOs and TPOs throughout Florida asking“just how does our NFTPO maintain such agood relationship with TIM team partners?”Guess it all began when they took the lead asthe first Champion of the North Florida ITSCoalition. That decision was the turning pointfor this region’s ITS program and is a majorreason for our success over the past severalyears. These other MPOs/TPOs are soenvious of our NFTPO that they have asked meto provide presentations in their area that willdisplay the partnership and vision we have inthis region. That’s pretty impressive when youthink about Orlando, Tampa and Ft. Lauderdaleasking us how to get it done while doing it right.Remember, these areas have one of the largestdeployments in the Country yet they are comingto us for guidance.

The next time you see, Denise, Jeff, Marci andthe others do me a quick favor and just tellthem “thanks!”

MAINTENANCE

The ITS Maintenance Section is still seeing veryfew device failures as we are out of lightningseason, although we have recently had a fewmajor storms roll through the area. TheMaintenance crews have been busy installingBlueTOAD devices along the newly installedPhase 7 and Phase 8 ITS corridors. Thedevices have been working well and areproviding travel time data for these corridors.BlueTOAD installations will be focused on someof the arterial roadways around Jacksonville inthe next few months, to provide more travel timeand traffic information to the Traffic ManagementCenter.

As noted in the October Newsletter, the ITSMaintenance Contract was put out for bid andthe results were revealed this month. Only twocompanies submitted proposals and bids for thecontract. The winning proposer was TrafficControl Devices (TCD), which has been the ITSMaintenance Contractor on the past several ITSMaintenance contracts with District Two. Welook forward to continued success and a goodworking relationship with the members of theTCD staff.

CONSTRUCTION

The Phase 7 Project on the I-295 East Beltway,starting at Atlantic Boulevard and going north tothe I-95 Interchange, has completedconstruction. Since the last Newsletter, themajority of devices have been made availableto the Traffic Management Center for their use.During integration, one of the CCTV cameralowering devices failed and resulted in thelowering device mount and some componentsbeing damaged. The replacement componentshave been ordered but have not been receivedto date. Once these components are receivedthey will be installed and project testing can befinalized.

The final plans have been submitted for thePhase 9 Project on the I-295 East Beltway fromI-95 going north to Atlantic Boulevard. Thisproject was previously put out for bid, but therewas a protest of the proposed contract awardand so the project had to be put out for bidagain. The project is now scheduled to Let inMay 2014.

The I-10 Interchange ITS Project, whichincludes the installation of fiber optic cable,CCTVs and MVDS within the area of the I-10/I-95 Interchange, is still behind schedule. Thecontractor is currently working on installation ofdevices, power services and MVDS poles.Upcoming work will include installation of CCTVpoles, bridge mounted conduit over King Street,fiber optic cable installation, and ITS cabinetinstallation. This project is currently scheduledto be completed in February 2014.

The JaxPort Fiber Installation Project, whichincludes the installation of fiber optic cable toconnect FDOT to the JaxPort Talleyrand andBlount Island Terminals, is still installing conduitand pull boxes throughout the project area.This project is currently behind schedule and is

anticipated to be completed in late February.Once completed, this fiber optic cable will tie-in theJaxPort facilities with FDOT and allow trafficinformation and video sharing between theagencies.

The SR 23 Toll Project, which is installing ITS onSR 23, I-10 from I-295 to just west of SR 23, and I-95 through St. Johns County is still under design.The ITS portion for I-10 from I-295 to West of SR23 and I-95 through St. Johns County will be thefirst stage of construction. This construction willcomplete the installation of fiber optic cable on I-95 from North of Jacksonville to South of Miami. Itwill also allow Florida’s Turnpike to connect to SR23 for their tolling needs.

The I-75 ITS Project in Gainesville is gearing up.The ground-breaking ceremony for this projectwas held January 21st. The ceremony attractedseveral elected officials and high ranking officialsfrom local agencies who are eager for the ITSDevices to be in place and operational. (seepictures below & at right) The pre-constructionmeeting was held on January 28th andconstruction is expected to begin in early Spring..

ROAD RANGER UPDATE

Road Rangers have proven to be a valuableasset to incident management when respondingto the scene. The variable message signs on thetrucks as well as the cones are used to warnmotorists of the incident they are approachingwhich alerts them to slow down and thusimproves safety at the incident scene. Not onlyare the incident scenes safer when the RoadRanger is present, but data shows that theincident is cleared much quicker. This improvessafety since the involved motorists andresponders are on the road for less time, but italso improves traffic flow since the impedimentof traffic is removed quicker. For incidents inJanuary through the 21st, the roadway clearanceduration has averaged about 15 minutes shorterfor events that had a Road Ranger on-scene.

The following charts show all event types thatthe Road Rangers have responded to upthrough January 21 and also some of the mainactivities performed when responding to theseevents. Notice that the Road Rangers primarilyrespond to Crashes and Disabled Vehicles. Fortheir activities, they primarily provided MOT andthe use of their VMS along with assistance toother responders such as maintenance and lawenforcement. They also conduct an average ofnearly 2 Safe Tows per day. Safe Tows improvethe safety of the motorist and the responder byremoving them from dangerous locations.

The Road Rangers currently operate in theJacksonville area on I-10, I-95, I-295 and ButlerBlvd from Monday to Friday from 6:30 AM to6:30 PM. You can call for Road Rangerassistance by dialing *FHP (*347).

RISC – RAPID INCIDENT SCENECLEARANCE - UPDATE

On Monday, January 6 before 2 AM, a RISCevent was activated in Alachua County on I-75southbound at mile marker 378. UniversityTowing responded to the incident and was on-scene in less than 20 minutes.

The wrecker cleared the travel lanes by 3:15AM, but FHP decided to keep the lanes closeddue to a fuel spill of around 300 gallons. Theroad was opened just after 9 AM. This incidentwill be debriefed at the Alachua-Bradford TIMMeeting on February 12. Please join us at theTIM meeting if you have any comments to sharewith the team about this incident.

FIRST COAST TRAFFIC INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM UPDATE

A First Coast TIM team meeting was held onJanuary 21 at the FDOT Urban Office. At thismeeting members discussed upcoming roadclosures due to construction, particularly for theOverland Bridge Project. Representatives ofKCCS informed the team that the ramp fromMain Street to Hendricks Avenue will bepermanently closed around the beginning ofFebruary.

The team also discussed the major incident thatoccurred in Flagler County on I-95 northbound.Though the main affect to District 2 was onlycongestion on I-95 southbound in St JohnsCounty, members of the team noticed thatcommunication between agencies could beimproved and the team in that area could benefitfrom having diversion route maps for when amajor incident like this occurs. It was suggestedthat there be an annual joint TIM meetingbetween that First Coast TIM meeting and theTIM meeting in District 5 that borders St JohnsCounty to improve communication betweenagencies and provide other lessons learned bythe District 2 TIM teams.

Several team members also took copies of theTIMe4Safety Videos to share with theiragencies. This training video is divided into 4modules and provides valuable information onmaintaining safety at an incident scene. It wasalso announced that the District 2 DiversionRoutes will be updated soon so members couldbe thinking about what changes might need tobe made especially in areas where there havebeen major changes to the interstate such as atCollins Rd and Blanding Blvd. See the scheduleon the final page of the newsletter for dates ofupcoming First Coast TIM Meetings.

ALACHUA-BRADFORD TRAFFICINCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM UPDATE

The next Alachua-Bradford meeting will be heldon February 12. At this meeting the team plansto debrief the RISC incident that occurred on I-75 SB at mile marker 378 which is described inthe RISC section of this newsletter. TheAlachua-Bradford TIM meeting will also affordmembers an opportunity to discuss recent trafficincidents and upcoming construction or otherexpected future events so that responders willbe prepared when working in those areas.Deployment of the I-75 ITS project will no doubtbe a major asset to responders in this area onceit is completed. Updates and other details of thisITS project can be obtained at these TIMmeetings.

You know it’s a true Florida winter when you gofrom wearing flip flops and shorts… to parkasand gloves… all in a 24 hour time span! I took aleisurely stroll along the beach on January 20th,basking in the warm sunshine and snapping afew pictures along the way, only to be greetedthe very next afternoon by a hailstorm that senttemperatures plummeting into the 30s overnight.

We have a few outdoor events coming up, so Ihope the weather can strike a good “balance”sometime in the next month or so. Thankgoodness it was nice and cozy inside the RendaBroadcasting studios when we made a guestappearance on Jim Byard’s CommunityOutreach Program a couple of weeks ago.Renda Broadcasting is home to Lite 96.1, GatorCountry 99.9, Classic Rock 94.1 and BullCountry 100.7. Jim is always the most gracioushost. And by the way, he just celebrated his 37th

year with Renda’s Jacksonville cluster ofstations! A feat almost unheard of in radio. He letus rattle on for a while about 511 and the newRTMC, then we started talking about our newcameras and sensors along the I-295 Corridor(the portion of the East and West Beltwaystretching from I-10 all the way across theDames Point Bridge and over to Atlantic Blvd).Jim promised to have us back in the studios foranother interview when the new RTMC iscomplete and we’re all settled into our newfacility.

We’ll also be hosting another media day inconjunction with Global 5 that will be held onTuesday, February 18th prior to the Daytona 500.After noticing how much media attention wasgenerated by our event with THE PLAYERS thispast spring, officials at The DaytonaInternational Speedway expressed an interest inholding a similar event. It will, of course, take

Construction on the Overland Bridge projectcontinues to impact traffic in that area of I-95,though fortunately there does not seem to be asignificant increase in crashes. When comparingthe number of crashes on I-95 northbound fromEmerson to the I-10 interchange in the first 3weeks of this January versus the first 3 weeks ofJanuary 2013, there was actually 1 less crashthis year. Though for the same comparison onthe southbound side there have been 4 morecrashes this year. Perhaps the reduced speedlimit and information disseminated to the publicabout the project are reducing the potential forcrashes in this area.

Overall, thus far in the month of January itappears that the amount of crashes is slightly

higher than last month, but still lower than theaverage for the last 12 months. In December,there was an average of about 19 crashes perday, and there have been about 21 per day inJanuary, but the average for the last 12 monthsis about 23 per day. It is likely that the increasedtravel around the holidays is offset by thedecrease in recurring congestion from dailycommuters due to taking off time from work orschool.

The following chart shows the Open Roads,Roadway Clearance and Incident Clearancedurations for the last few months. Novemberreported the longest duration times, whileJanuary has reported the lowest duration timesof the months compared.

OPERATIONS

My wife and I have four year old twins namedLyla and Bennett that bring an abundance of joyevery day to our lives, especially on holidays.They both continue to grow at a pace that mywife and I are not comfortable with. I wish wecould bottle this age and keep them like thisforever but there are already signs of growingup. Earlier this year as we watched Bennettknee himself in the chest as he attempted to ridehis bike that was too small for him, we decidedChristmas would bring new bikes for the kids.

We love to spend time outdoors and bikes are abig part of that. We witnessed pure elation ontheir faces when they saw their new bikes (puttogether by Beach and Bike!) and it was off tothe cul-de-sac. But first there were morepresents. Lyla’s imagination is immense and shegot a Little Mermaid toy cell phone so she cantalk to everyone (real and fiction) anytime shewanted. I love standing just outside of herdoorway, listening to her conversation with someDisney Princess that just HAS to come over andplay. As we made our way outside, the TMCwork side of me thought this was going to be aninteresting case study…..a teenager (I mean 4year old going on 18), a cell phone (I mean playLittle Mermaid cell phone) and a brand new car(I mean flower power beach cruiser bike) goingout for a cruise. This should be interesting.

Lyla and Bennett took to the streets. Bennettwhirled in circles around the cul-de-sac on hisnew Spider Man bike, trying to keep his balancewhile lapping his sister. Lyla started off strongbut then….the cell phone came out! My wife andI watched while she talked to her cousin inConnecticut and managed about 20 feet overseveral minutes. My neighbor’s mailbox andLyla’s head almost paid the price (Helmet on!)as she zigged and zagged. Pavement to grassto sidewalk back to pavement and back to grassshe went before we finally took her phone fromher. After that she was right on Bennett’s heels.

Looking at the situation it reminds you of justhow dangerous distracted driving can be. Yes,she is four and it was on a bike but the lessonis the same. Distracted driving is dangerousdriving. The lessons our kids receive on beinga good/ safe driver will be extensive. BlueToothis here already and in 12 years my kids shouldbe all set with that. What about texting? Is itbanned? So what? People still do it. I havebeen on numerous calls where the person says“hold on, cop, I need to put my phone down.”People will always do it. Autonomous car…youcannot be here fast enough! Put it down, it canwait.

*In 2012, 21% of fatal crashes for drivers 15-19 years old were distracted by their cellphone

*Drivers who use their cell phone are 4times more likely to get in a crash thatinjures themselves

*Texting while driving has the highest riskof all forms of distraction and is comparableto driving drunk

Secretary Ray LaHood launched a nationwideeffort back in 2009 to address this epidemic. Thefirst National Distracted Driving Summit tookplace in 2009 and the transportation communityhasn’t looked back since. Tell us a little bit about your upbringing.

I was born and raised in the Caribbean on anisland called Trinidad. My upbringing was asimple one where I just loved to play outsidewith my brother. I was one of those girls whowere classified as a “tomboy.” Wherever mybrother went, I was right behind him. Iremember us getting into so much trouble oneday because I wanted to be one of the boys. Iended up climbing a fence and ripped a bighole in my pants, yet I was still walking alonggoing about my business. My mom came homeand saw the big rip up the back of my pantsand she had some words for the both of us. It isfunny now to look back on it, but it wasn’t funnyback then when we were getting yelled at. Asyou can see it was a joint effort because mybrother should have been watching me a bitcloser.

At 10 years old I moved to Rochester, MI. Thatwas one of the worst experiences I hadencountered in all my 10 years on this earth! (atthat point). The cold weather got to me and 2years later I returned to my Caribbean weatherback in Trinidad. My mom decided that it wastime for us to try moving to the United Statesagain and we attempted to do so when I was13 years old. We ended up moving to Floridaand once again the U.S. proved to be sodifferent from my home country that I adoredand loved, so 2 years later I ended back up inTrinidad. While attending secondary school Ifell in love with engineering. I was one of thosenerdy kids who loved math and science andwanted to build bridges. I completed mysecondary education and began my careerworking as a secretary for a Fire-Fightingcompany in Trinidad.

Describe your early career.In 2007 I moved back up to the U.S. (Ft.Lauderdale area) and attended BrowardCommunity College to attain my AssociatesDegree. Upon completion, I decided to pursuemy Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering at theUniversity of South Florida. I initially went intothe program thinking that I wanted to focus onStructural Engineering but as I got further along Inoticed a shift in my interests and realized mytrue passion was in Transportation. I then wenton to complete two Master’s degrees from USFin Engineering Management and the other inCivil Engineering with a focus in Transportation.

Throughout my entire career as a student Iworked full time. I started off as a secretary for aprinting company and then worked my way tobecoming a pharmacy technician for Wal-Martfor 5 years. Up to this day I still retain mypharmacy license. When I was about to enterinto my Masters degrees I decided that I neededto find a job which pertained more to what I likedto do and what I was focusing on in school. Istarted looking for work in my last semester asan undergraduate and ended up as a ResearchAssistant at the Center for Urban TransportationResearch (CUTR) at USF. Working at CUTRhas given me so many opportunities to see howprojects are handled from beginning to end andalso the ability to network. This is how I endedup at my current job today.

How would you describe your current role inTransportation?I am currently a Traffic Engineer Intern for MetricEngineering. Seeing as I have only been herefor two weeks I am still working out the kinks inmy specific duties. So far I am assisting the TMChere at FDOT by learning how to monitor theRoad Rangers by performing a quality servicereport, keeping track of the Road Ranger AVL

and performing audits on the SunGuide and AVLreports. I am also working with the Safety Teamhere at FDOT helping with whatever needs theyhave on projects.

How long have you been at your current job?I actually just started with Metric Engineering atthe beginning of January. I am really excited towork at this company. Everyone has been reallywelcoming and understanding and I cannot askfor anything else. It is a pleasure to work withindividuals who make your day better and canimpart so much knowledge to you. Just anexample of how welcoming they were: they evenoffered to get me to and from the airport so Iwouldn’t have to park my car in long termparking when I went to Washington, D.C. forTRB. I was astounded and so appreciative ofeverything they have done for me.

What’s the best advice anyone’s ever givenyou?Always take notes. Along the way severalpeople have told me to do this and it has workedout to be an advantage.

Do you have a favorite quote? Somethingthat inspires you?"Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)"~Doris Day. It just lets me know not to stressabout what I cannot change because sometimesI worry myself with the dreaded thoughts of“what I could have done differently”, as we allprobably do. Things happen and I try to takethem on a moment to moment basis.

Any job related awards or special recognitionyou’ve received?I was recently selected by the National Centerfor Transit Research as their Student of the Yearfor 2013 due to a project that I worked on titled“Improved Traffic Control Measures to Prevent

Incorrect Turns at Highway-Rail GradeCrossings”. This project entailed many differentaspects, such as identifying major causes,critical features, and prevailing conditionsinfluencing the incorrect turning behavior ofvehicles onto railroad tracks. I assisted faculty atthe Center for Urban Transportation Research(CUTR) by thoroughly reviewing literature,designing a set of comprehensivecountermeasures aimed at improving incorrectturns at highway-rail grade crossings andpreparing a final report for FDOT. This awardgave me the opportunity to travel to Washington,D.C. to attend the Transportation ResearchBoard 93rd Annual Meeting and accept theaward in front of many professionals. It wasnerve racking being up on stage under thespotlight but I had a wonderful time. It was amoment to shine and I enjoyed every moment ofit. It was amazing to get recognized with somany other reputable schools and scholars. Italso set the precedence for the rest of theconference because people kept coming up tome asking me if I was the person who won thestudent of the year award. It was a greatintroduction opener and people wanted to get toknow more about me due to the recognition.This would be a defining moment in my careerdue to the fact that it made me realize that hardwork does pay off. Sometimes we may getdiscouraged but if we keep on working towardsour goals we can achieve what we want to.

Best job ever / worst job ever… or both?The best and worst job I ever had was workingat the pharmacy in Wal-Mart. Some days wereawesome and then again some days were justplain bad. Customers can make you really gocrazy sometimes but then there are always thereally nice customers who can balance the goodand the bad for you. It was great to learn a joboutside of my field of engineering and it gave mea break from constantly being immersed inengineering.

Tell us a little about your family.I have family spread all over. Some are backhome in Trinidad, others are in New Jersey,Michigan, and the bulk of them are actually allover Florida. As for my immediate family mymom moved back to Trinidad approximately twoyears ago, so it is always a joy to see herwhenever I get the chance, and I have onebrother that lives in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I alsohave a niece and a nephew by my brother andthey are the light of my life. Whenever I go backto Ft. Lauderdale to visit them it is always a funtime but leaving them breaks my heart everysingle time. I do not think I will ever get used tothat feeling.

Do you have any hobbies?I love to read. I am a sucker for a vampire bookseries. Currently I am working on reading theHouse of Night novels. I also love to cook andtry different restaurants/foods. Seeing as I justcompleted school I realized how manyopportunities I can now explore. I was very muchcaught up in ITE, work and school that I forgotwhat it was like to have hobbies in general! Weshall fix that this year!

Favorite vacation spot?The Caribbean. Very general, I know, but I loveto be close to my home. I would also like to visitEngland, Australia and the Maldives sometimein the future. So who knows if this can changepossibly?.. Nah. Probably not.
