4th Annual Care & Compassion Awards Call for Nominations Labette Center for Mental Health Services (LCMHS) is asking for nominations for the fourth annual Care and Compassi on A wards. The Care and Compas sion A wards recognize those in the Labette County community and LCMHS staff members who routinely go above and be- yond to show care and compassion to others. “Nominees can be anyone in the Labette County com- munity, including employees of LCMHS, who have gone above and beyond to show care and compassion to others,” LCMHS Executive Director Matthew Atte-  berry said. “This person does not necessarily have to be someone who volunteers for a lot of different things, but someone who is extraordi- narily caring and routinely demonstrates compassion towards others.” Community members and LCMHS staff may sub mit entries. All entries must have the name of the person being nominated, an address and if possible a phone number. It is also helpful to include the name and phone number for the person who is submit- ting the nomination. A detai led description of why the person is bei ng nominated must also be included. Program Meets and Exceed 2013 Goals

In its rst year in Labette County, the My Family LabetteProgram had set its sights high. By the end of the yearreport, the program had not only met their goal, but ex-ceeded it!

Andrea Bray expressed that she was very excited aboutthe outcome of this year. “I was eager to get started whenI rst learned about the MIECHV grant for the My Family program. With this opportunity I have been able to inu-ence the lives of over 250 children,” Andrea stated. “Iam giving back in a way that I never thought was pos-sible.” The community of Labette County has welcomed

the program. Many agencies including Greenbush ParentsAs Teachers, Early Steps to School Success 503 &506,SEK-CAP, Labette Health, and Department of Childrenand Families have aided in the goal to reach families. An-drea went on to say, “With the MIECHV grant, I havehelped families nd housing, employment, assistance andsupport.” The My Family Labette program is geared tohelp children and families prenatal to ve years old, butit doesn’t stop there. Andrea tries to make sure that eachfamily that she comes in contact with gets the help or as-sistance they need. She is determined to continue reachingas many families as she can.

Through the My Family Labette program children ages prenatel to 5 years old can be reffered to programs such as

Birth to Three, SEK-CAP Early HeadStart, Parents as Teachers and LabetteCenter for Mental Health Services.

Toys for Tots

The program distributed toys on Sunday December 15th, SatuDecember 21st and Sunday December 22nd. By the end of22nd Labette County Toys for Tots distributed a total 1498 t731 books, 294 games and 724 stocking stuffers. This serve provide Christmas to 790 kids (283 families)!

In order to provide that many items to that many children, it ta lot of great people from our community to donate. The gnumerous toys that were left at drop off locations through

the county. In monetary donations the program collected $5000.00 to be used for Labette County children. All donatreceived by Labette County Toys for Tots stayed in Labette Cty.

Although Labette Center is not directlyafliated with the Toys for Tots program,we greatly enjoyed having them in our fa-cilities. It was a joy to watch as all thetoys poured in from the area and to knowwhat a great benet it was going to be toarea children!

Rebecca Gray Named As

Primary Crisis Therapist

sis Therapist for the Center. In this

 position, Gray will provide crisis

services to the community as her

 primary function.

Gray joined the LCMHS team onOctober 10th, 2011. She was born

and raised in Labette County. She

attended Bartlett Grade School

through the 8th grade, and then

continued through high school at

Labette County High School in

Altamont, KS, graduating in 1992. She went on to receive her

Associates degree in Sociology in 2008 from Labette Commu-

nity College, her Bachelor’s in Social Work from Pittsburg

University in 2010 and in 2011 her Master’s in Social Work

Washburn University. Gray received her practicum experie

ty Mental Health Center in Independence, KS, where she w

as a Victim Services Intern for the Domestic Violence Sur

Program. She has been a member of NASW (National As

Celebrating 35 Years of Serving Labette CountyOn March 1st, 1979, Labette Center forMental Health Services opened its doors tothe public. At that time the Center was locat-ed on the rst oor of Labette Health (thencalled Labette County Medical Center). TheCenter’s Board of Directors had hired Dr.

Jack Martin, a local psychologist, as the rst employee. He wasgiven the title of Administrator and psychologist for the Center,and then later titled as Executive Director. In reection of the

start of the Center, Dr Martin stated, “It was a really interestingtime with lots of personal and professional changes.” He wenton to say, “Lots of good community supports, including thatof the County Commission, lead to positive changes. If peoplework in a positive way, great things can happen.”

The only other employee of the Center on that opening day in1979 was Nancy Dorsey. Dorsey was hired as the Center’s re-ceptionist and ofce manager. Dorsey is still an employee of theCenter, making her the employee with the most years of service.“I really enjoy being a part of the Center,” stated Dorsey. “It has

 been wonderful to watch it grow from the small ofces we had inthe beginning to the company it has become. It's a good feelingto know I've had a small part in that growth!” Dorsey currently

serves as the Medical Administrative Assistant.

Throughout the years, the Center has continued to grow andourish. It now houses a total of approximately 60 full and parttime employees, operates from ve different buildings locatedthroughout Parsons and has a satellite ofce in the Oswego Med-ical Center, where clients are seen on Thursday’s every week.

Matthew Atteberry, Executive Director, has been with LCenter for 24 of those 35 years, eleven of which he has sas the Executive Director. During that time he has wathe Center grow and face many changes. Through growchange the Center has held strong to its dedication of provservices to communities of Labette County. They now movward into the next phases of operation with the same enthuas they have had through the last 35 years. “We have many to be thankful for at Labette Center,” he stated. “With the

cation of staff and the support of our community we haveable to provide services to Labette County. It is an honor only still be here serving this community, but to know thwill continue to serve for years to come.”

The current Board of Directors for Labette Center for tal Health Services includes Chairperson, Dee Bohnenblyears), Linda Rife (20 years), Nancy Boegel (21 years), JeaCandless (27 years), Jack Flynn (27 years), Tommey Mc(31 years), and Kirk Wyckoff (36 years). Kirk Wyckoff wof the original board members when the Center opened.
