2014: An Introspective Year...9
Your Exercise Resolution Starts with You...13
Dear Friend, A new year begins again. And, as with each cycle of the seasons, it offers a chance for re-newal and rebirth. The Winter Solstice, bring-ing with it the lengthening of days, is often considered the birth of the year. In the midst of the cold and darkness and still of winter, the new year breaks through slowly with the return of more light. Each new year holds the sacredness of this change. I always feel a re-
birth of sorts and enjoy burrowing-in during the cold winter months, using the quiet and renewal to plan the coming year, reflect on the past and eagerly await the spring.
Our New Year, New You issue focuses on the inner searching of the season. It's a chance to start anew, and many take on resolutions to take advantage of this exciting opportunity. Whether you're focus-ing on eating whole foods, financial gain, taking on a new project or simply want to lead a life more in tune with your inner guidance, the articles this month help you to focus and get clear on your goals and motivations for achieving them.
I wish you the most prosperous, joyous New Year — and beyond!

Love in the Land of Dementia
Finding Hope in the Caregiver’s Journey
By Deborah Shouse Caregiver Shouse celebrates spiritual lessons learned on her journey with her mother through Alzheimers dis-
ease. When Alzheimer’s disease began to claim Deborah Shouse’s mother, it threatened the fabric of her parents’ long and loving marriage, and sowed the seeds of misery, frustration and discord that strained relationships with family and friends. But over time, the love her parents shared proved it could-n’t be broken, not even when memory and identity were all but gone. This book provides compelling evi-dence that love is the greatest healing force on earth. Shouse shows us how she and her father learned to walk her mother home, with light and love, with hope and dignity. This book will uplift you and leave you feeling like you spent time with a loving friend. “I have read hundreds of true stories about families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. None was written more won-derfully or truthfully about grief, guilt, and yes, grace of caring for someone with this disease.”—LeAnn Thiemann, coauthor of Chicken Soup for the Care-giver’s Soul
Key Features • Author is an internationally sought-after speaker and workshop presenter on this topic. Deborah Shouse’s writing has ap-peared in the Washington Post, the Christian Science Monitor, Reader’s Digest, Newsweek, Woman’s Day, Hemispheres, Family Circle, Spirituali-ty and Health, Chicago Tribune, and MS. She writes a weekly column on love stories for the Kansas City Star, coau-thored Working Women’s Communica-tions Guide, which is now in it’s 5th printing, and Antiquing for Dummies.

The quieter you become, the more you
can hear. —Baba Ram Dass
“When it comes to managing negative emotions during con-flict, wives really mat-
ter,” says psychologist, Lian Bloch. Bloch and her colleagues at Berkeley and Northwestern University analyzed videotaped interactions of 80 middle-aged and older heterosexual couples, looking at how they recovered from disagreements. It was found that mar-riages in which wives calmed down during disputes were shown to be the happiest in both the short and long term. Their study suggests that if spouses, especially wives, are able to calm themselves their marriage can continue to thrive. This is consistent with Dr John Gottman and Dr. Robert Levenson’s research from 1980-1983 which found that marital satisfaction declined most when wives responded to their hus-bands being upset and husbands did not respond to their wives being upset. One would hope that younger gener-ations will change this pattern of wom-en being the emotional center of the relationship and of the family; but for now, it continues to be the norm. “If Mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody hap-py,” is the pattern I observe most often. As one partner emotionally floods, the other one withdraws. The flooding then heightens and more withdrawal or sometimes anger occurs. Problem-solving attempts at this point are rarely successful. Self-soothing skills are an important tool. The therapist as a neutral party can assist by helping each person to breathe deeply, take a moment to go to a safe place, thereby reducing stress and negative emotions. Dr. Gottman often suggests that couples take the ‘twenty minute break’ (Twenty Minute Break by Ernest Rossi, Ph.D.) by doing imagery, meditation, exercise, reading, etc., to self-calm. Then the couple can resume the conversation with less dis-tress, more empathy and concentra-tion. The process of ‘mirroring’ used in Imago Therapy is also a tool assisting couples in self-calming.
The reason both Gottman and Rossi suggest the twenty minute break is documented in neurological studies. According to Dr. Gottman, “The major sympathetic neurotransmitter norepi-nephrine doesn’t have an enzyme to degrade it so it has be diffused through blood…this takes twenty minutes or more in the cardiovascular system.” The Neurobehavioral Program, de-veloped by Dr. John Leonard, consists of learning finger signals that indicate a person’s readiness first and then the action of going to zero stress or a state of ‘peaceful readiness’ where one is stronger, safer and better able to make good decisions. The next step is to re-duce negative emotions of fear, sadness and anger to zero. When I teach this skill to people, they are able to negoti-ate conflict much more effectively. When a person practices the skills of self-soothing, interactions become eas-ier and more effective. Practice is the key. The ‘neuroplasticity’ of the brain enables us to make changes in old pat-terns of behavior by changing the focus of attention and developing new habits. Women seem to have the edge in being able to calm down more quickly than men as their cardiovascular sys-tems take less time to recover from stress. So, the old axiom still appears to hold true and women may get their needs met better by learning to self-soothe. As men self-soothe, they can listen better to the emotions of women in their lives. So, find your tools of self-soothing, practice them daily and enjoy the more awesome relationships in your life this year.

O nly three out of 10 of you read-ing this column
will manifest your de-sires and goals this year, according to Mark Victor Hansen in his book, The Aladdin Factor.
How to become the winner you wish to be? I write out my goals in detail. The Yoga School builds its suc-cess on a business plan, designed by my mentor, a business guru. The sim-ple task of writing down your goals and dreams adds momentum to your success. What do you write down? How to begin?
• Ask the “why.” Why are you doing
this or wanting this? Is there an element of “true work” in your goal? True work involves service and generosity. Give to your cli-ents, co-workers, employees, com-petitors. Praise everyone. Be gen-erous!
• Be passionate! When you embrace
a desire with enough passion — it becomes part of you. Passions lift our feelings of self-worth and high esteem.
• Decide you cannot and will not
fail. Figure out how weaknesses may transform to strengths. Work to understand why you resist suc-cess. The famous quote from au-thor Marianne Williamson: “We do not fear our failures. We fear our success.”
• Recruit help from unseen re-
sources via mediation and prayer. Ask, ask, ask for help no matter what issue, large or small. As well, be strong enough to lean on sup-port of friends and family and colleagues. Be strong enough to lean on love.
• Protect your “intent” with this
boundary: “I am manifesting this for the greater good with harm to none.”
• Patience. Be gentle with yourself
on the time factor. Sometimes big dreams take more time. Some-
times little dreams take more time. Patience is fundamental. Remember the true meaning of patience is seeing each day as a “new” day.
• Stay conscious of your ego’s ploy:
“Poor me I have so much work to do” and stay conscious of the “saboteur,” who may feel over-whelmed. Manage your time in an organized and productive fashion. You do not have to accomplish your entire list in one day.
The undercurrent of our success is our inner resources of hope, trust and courage. Try success for a week or two and if you do not care for it you can always go back to your old ways. Don't give up. Persevere. The goal may be just beyond the tip of your fingers. Last, love yourself. Love is a choice. Fear is a choice. Now you are one of the top three winners who meet their goals. 2013 for me was just magical….a very good year indeed. Let’s work to-gether in 2014 with a final tip for suc-cess: Gratitude. Thank you, beloved reader friend.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 7 January 2014
I n the 21st century, two things have become increasing-
ly apparent: First, we are exposed to a more complex array of toxic compounds in our air, water, and food than ever before. Second, it has been recognized
that an individual’s ability to detoxify or biotransform and eliminate toxic sub-stances is of critical importance to over-all health. Understanding toxicity and taking practical steps to improve bio-transformation are essential and critical pieces in any integrative approach to your health and well-being. There is persuasive evidence that even low-level toxic exposure is related to a variety of chronic health conditions, in-cluding hormone imbalance, degenera-tive diseases, headaches, chronic sinusi-tis, fibromyalgia, fatigue, etc. From the moment we wake up until we go to bed, our body is constantly ex-posed to toxic chemicals. If you are not eating organic foods, your morning cere-al may be exposing you to pesticides. Cosmetics can contain bismuth and lead, while many of the plastic containers are made of phthalates, a harmful plastic softener. It’s an ongoing onslaught caus-ing more health problems than we ever realized. Harmful toxins are present in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. Today’s question is no longer whether or not we are toxic; but rather, how do we get rid of these toxins? The human body has four main pathways that re-move toxic buildup. These include the feces, urine, sweat and breath. Some toxins get eliminated directly by some of these pathways, many of them need to be transformed into water-soluble com-pounds, while still others have to be changed into complex molecules. These transformations occur in the body’s most important detoxification organ, the liver. Other organ systems involved in detoxifi-cation include the kidneys, gastrointesti-nal system and the skin. As people battle greater amounts of environmental toxins and encounter life stressors, it is possible to overwhelm our built-in detoxification systems. The tox-ins can remain in our bodies, where they can accumulate to dangerous levels. There are two avenues to protect your-self. The first is to minimize your intake
of toxins and the second is to enhance elimination of toxins from your system. Some ways to minimize your intake are: • Eating organic foods, especially
dairy and animal products, and the following produce: apples, pears, grapes, strawberries, carrots, pota-toes, and lettuces.
• Drink purified, filtered water for drinking and cooking and get a shower head filter for bathing. Drink enough water, about 1/2 ounce per pound of body weight per day.
• Use natural cleaners, detergents, soaps and make-up.
• Avoid monosodium glutamate (MSG), textured vegetable protein (TVP), yeast extracts, sodium nitrite, aspartame (Nutrasweet), saccharin, and sucralose (Splenda). These in-gredients contain potentially dan-gerous neurotoxins and/or hormone disruptors.
• Avoid contamination from lead based paints and asbestos contain-ing compounds that are in older homes and buildings.
Some ways to enhance elimination and protect yourself now are: • Exercise regularly and sweat; if you
don’t sweat, consider using a sauna. • Protect your nervous system with
omega-3 oils, antioxidants, trace minerals and vitamin D.
• Drink plenty of water as mentioned above to aid the kidneys in flushing out toxins.
• Effective detoxification is based on a scientific understanding of the body’s natural cleansing process. Safe and effective herbs and nutri-ents are important. The program should be gradual and gentle and work with the body’s own detoxifica-tion ability and normal patterns of elimination.

O ne of the best things you can do for
your health is to eat six fist-size or fistful servings of vegeta-bles daily. But in January, the vegeta-bles aren’t too fresh or they travel long
distances to your market. Or maybe six servings is more than you are used to eating. Here are a few ways to get those veggies during January or any time of year. Smoothies are a tasty way to hide the taste and quantity of vegetables. Many people will down a handful of spinach in a smoothie, but have a tough time eat-ing that same handful with a fork. Popeye’s Power Smoothie (Christy Lonergan) 1 cup of almond mylk or your favorite non-dairy mylk 1 large handful of spinach (about 2 cups) 1 apple 3-4 strawberries 3-4 Ice cubes, if a cold shake is desired 2 tsp chia seeds Rinse spinach, and place all ingredients except chia seeds into blender until smooth. Pour into a glass, add chia seeds and stir. The chia seeds will con-geal like tapioca. You may also blend the chia seeds into the smoothie with the other ingredients. Serves 1. Green Breakfast Smoothie (Deborah Page Johnson) 1 ripe avocado 6-inch piece cucumber 1 cup fresh spinach 1 cup fresh cilantro 1 teaspoon wheat grass powder or other green powder 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil 2 cups purified water ½ teaspoon sea salt or juice of ½ lemon or lime
Put all ingredients into a blender and process until smooth. Thin as needed with water. Serves 1 – 2. Sprouts are another way to up your veggies. All you need is a mason jar, a rim and some cheesecloth. Once you decide you like sprouting you can order plastic rims and stainless steel mesh screens from sproutpeople.org, which avoid rust and are easier to clean. Place the seeds you want to sprout in the ma-son jar no more than 1/4 full. Fill the jar with water, place the cheesecloth over the opening and fasten it in place with the rim. Allow the seeds to soak over-night. The next day, drain the water out through the cheese cloth. Then rinse your sprouts by filling the jar with water through the cheesecloth then drain-ing it. Repeat once more. Set the jar upside down at an angle for the day. A glass pie dish works well for this. Repeat the rinsing procedure morning and evening. In as little as one to two days the seeds will break and you’ll see tails appearing--the seeds are sprout-ing. They’re ready to eat any time after that. Johnnyseeds.com sells sprouting seeds. For a fresh live delight grab a handful and top them with olive oil and a splash of sherry vinegar. Throw in some chopped olives or sun-dried toma-toes to be fancy.
Get local veggies year round from Cultivate KC’s Gibbs Road Farm. They offer three 14 week subscriptions in 2014. The first starts on Feb 4, the sec-ond on May 21 and the third on Septem-ber 3. Registration for all three begins January 13, but spots go quick. Learn more at www.cultivatekc.org

A double cut pork chop is a portion of meat cut perpendicularly to
the spine of the pig, usually containing two ribs or parts of the vertebra. Executive Chef, Bradley Gilmore, achieves a juicy and flavorful result by first marinating this double cut chop and then using a sous-vide (French for
"under vacuum") process to cook the meat. Sous-vide is a method of cooking food sealed in airtight plastic bags, in a water bath of maintained temperature. The intention is to cook the item evenly while keeping the food juicier. Chef finishes the chop by first breading and then browning the product.
Ingredients:
1 double bone-in pork chop
1 cup seasoned flour
1 cup blanched Brussel sprouts
2T chopped bacon
6 oz heavy whipping cream
2T Pecorino Remano, shredded
1T butter
salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
Bread pork chop in seasoned flour on all sides.
Sear breaded pork chop in high heat pan on all sides.
Put pork chop in a 450 degree oven for 15 to 20 min.
While pork chop is cooking...
Start bacon in medium high heat pan and add cream.
Start reducing cream.
When half reduced, add Brussel sprouts and cheese.
When thick and creamy add butter and seasoning.

Revelations—by Elizabeth Summers, Esoteric Numerologist
2014: An Introspective Year
S everal prominent themes will move through the fila-
ments of life in 2014. To find the predominant theme for 2014 year, we add 2+0+1+4=7. The Number Seven can be a bit difficult to grapple with, as it is like holding
a cloud in one's hands. Certain buzz words need to be kept in mind as we travel through this rather unu-sual energy of 2014. Choice, discernment, silence, spirituality and ethics will show themselves as guideposts to be aware of and put into practice. Spiritual practices will become more mainstream. People will become more dis-cerning in choosing between those preach-ers and teachers that are not for their high-est good and greatest joy. Listening to and trusting one's hunches will become more imperative in decision making. The Number Seven is an inner vibration prompting one to silence, philosophical contemplation and analytical thinking, all in a space of reflection, rest, and solitude. The pressures of everyday life will bring forth a desire to get away from it all, and the best place for that will be nature. National parks will become even more popular as Mother Earth's energy becomes a healing balm in people's lives. The environmental protection of trees and water will become a more popular issue as people become reacquainted with the calming aspects of nature. This will lead to an increase in businesses like camping gear, mobile homes, nature tours, and river raft-ing that bring us back to a simpler lifestyle within a natural habitat. This contemplative and private vibration will cause many to withdraw and spend time in solitary activities often brought on by electronics, thus causing relationships to suffer. One might notice the divorce rate increasing in a Number Seven year as cou-ples find they do not have much in common and withdraw emotionally and sexually, as a consequence. A desire to be alone, not nec-essarily lonely, can become intense, thus moving the couple apart. Writing of all kinds will increase, includ-ing personal journaling. Because people will not be verbalizing many of their thoughts, journaling will become a more popular form of self-expression. Expect further development in the under-standing of mental health issues. Depres-sion caused by economic fears may become more of a public issue to be dealt with. Movement away from chemicals to more holistic approaches for medical treatments may become more popular and written
about. More emphasis will be given to or-ganic foods, as the Number Seven has a strong instinct for purity of health through foods. This enthusiasm is similar to a Virgo health fetish. The Number Seven is a code for the intel-lect, inventiveness and research. Expect advances in technology to surge in 2014 as science, technology and research will be-come optimum. New appliances, medicines, gadgets and widgets will come to the fore, boggling the mind for sure. Discernment will be a key word in 2014, physically, financially and governmentally. More will be revealed as to the ethics (or lack thereof) of our elected officials, and a "push" to remove them will resound in the ethers. There will be a sense of retreat and re-evaluation in people's lives throughout 2014. It will become blatantly obvious that the truth has not been provided to them by those they have trusted, and the populace will begin to understand that they should no longer give their power away to others. To move forward in one's personal life in 2014, we must come from our hearts, not our heads and egos. Number Seven is about trust and acceptance. Stay with heart based approaches. Trust that heart-based choices will guide you where you are to go and be, doing what you need to do in any moment. Know that your soul will take as long as it needs in order to move you forward in blessings and that when you surrender (which is different than giving up), what comes into your life next will be better and for your highest good and your greatest joy. When we choose fear, whether in our career, relationships or finances, physical ailments may arise. When we choose faith and trust in a Universe that can keep the stars in the sky, surrender to the Divine and let go of control, all will be well, slowly but surely.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 13 January 2014
O n the eve of each New Year
many of us follow tradion and
fall into compiling a well-
intenoned to-do list: sleep
more, eat less, get some exercise... sck to
the exercise—the list can go on. Think
about it though: many of these are ex-
tremely important to our health and well-
being, so why wait unl the New Year?
Why wait another day, hour, or minute?
Things like low back pain affect almost 80%
of us. It pays to take our resoluon seri-
ously, whatever the day. Remember, it
starts with you!
My experience has taught me that one
of the biggest oversights with regard to
exercise resoluons is failing to recognize
the energy that you carry with you into
this new venture. We all need to be ener-
gecally fit as well as physically fit, and to
recognize that these two are inmately
related. If you think about it, it becomes
obvious. This is what makes you, you!
Whatever your habits, good, bad or
indifferent, you are likely to address these
resoluons in the same way that you have
addressed similar pa/erns in the past. This
means that you are likely to find yourself
stuck in a holding pa/ern, physically and
emoonally.
There are many ways to address these
holding pa/erns and to resolve them suc-
cessfully, with therapies such as: Chiro-
pracc, Myofascial Release Therapy, Acu-
puncture, or with an Energy Praconer —
the list goes on; but, a combinaon of
structural and energec therapies usually
works best. My belief though, is that a5er
gaining an awareness of our energec
body, we can then successfully address our
physical body.
Life's experiences also create our brac-
ing pa/erns which could have developed
from accidents, surgery, stress, disease,
repeve movements, or even something
far less recent--our childhood. You may be
aware of areas in which you hold on to
“stuff”; but on a deeper level, we walk
around with these experiences literally
held within our ssues, daily reliving
(subconciously) the experiences of the
past. We hold it within our Fascia
(pronounced faa-sha) – this is a connecve
web that supports and communicates with
every cell of our body.
How does this relate to exercise?
Holding pa/erns signal the body to
move differently and to create structural
imbalances. You may feel them strongly, or
they may be so subtle that you won't feel a
thing unl something hurts.
Similar to an automobile system when
the check engine light comes on before
you break down! So it's good to address
those areas of imbalance before they cre-
ate a movement problem.
Beginning a fitness program can be a
daunng task even before you get to the
workout itself. There is a lot of infor-
maon and there are many 'experts'.
“Keep It Simple,” I say, and within your
comfort zone. Become educated about
what you need and work with a qualified
professional. Look for a trainer who is Na-
onally Cerfied through an accredited
board. These professionals should have
your best interests at heart and can walk
you through the process.
A reputable trainer will also take you
step-by-step through an assessment of
your body’s movements, your history, and
help you to either visually or kinesthecal-
ly be aware of how your body moves.
Then, comes work to restrengthen your
body to take strain off the joints and regain
symmetry and balance.
Among the many exercises I prescribe
for clients within my Correcve Exercise
pracce, I believe these three exercises
are good pracce, take only a few minutes,
and are worth being part of any regime:
• Walking and siEng tall.
Walk as though you have a string a/ached
to the top of your head. You will find your
abdominals will naturally want to assist.
This is not a forced movement holding you
in a foreign posture, but one that will
strengthen your deep spinal muscles.
• Quadruped.
This exercise works your deep core mus-
cles and helps to funconally balance your
le5 to right side core muscles.
Come onto the floor on your hands and
knees. Align your hands under your shoul-
ders with elbows facing toward your hips.
Slide your shoulder blades down towards
your back pockets. Align your knees under
your hips. Slowly extend out one leg, and
at the same me reach the opposite arm
over your head. Your body should not shi5
during this moon. Draw both arm and leg
in and repeat on opposite side. Do 12-15
repeons each side or unl fagued.
• Front and Side Planks
This exercise strengthens your deep core
muscles for stronger funconal movement.
Posion yourself on your elbows and
your knees (or feet if this is easy for you).
Straighten your spine and hold this posi-
on for 45-60 seconds. Move to your side,
align your knees, hips and shoulder, plac-
ing your elbow under your shoulder and
hold up your body off the floor li5ing from
your underside. Aim to hold for 45-60 sec-
onds Repeat 1-3 mes.
As with any exercise, listen to your body
and your intuion. Stay within your limits
with good funcon and form. Forget “no-
pain, no-gain” — it's wrong, and can be
detrimental to your progress.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 14 January 2014
A ll of us like, want,
and deserve a
fresh start. And, I
think a New Year is
a good me for a fresh start.
I’d like to suggest that this
fresh start include a daily
meditaon pracce or some
quiet me each day to simply
reflect upon our lives. Medi-
taon is compable with any
faith tradion and is a won-
derful way to enhance and deepen your spiritual prac-
ce.
Many of us have go/en away from our meditaon
pracce. Many of us have also succumbed to one or
all of the afflicve emoons. Maybe we have been
unkind or not controlled our anger. Somemes it may
seem like we are not making any progress at all. Most
people think of the word “sin” as exclusively a Chris-
an term. However, the original meaning of the word
“sin” was an archery term that meant, “missing the
mark.” All of us fall short of the mark at some me.
It is when we realize that we have fallen short that
we have the opportunity to start anew, whether it is
our meditaon pracce, spending more me with our
families, controlling our anger, being more paent, or
whatever it is we need to do.
Somemes life gives us a fresh start whether we
want one or not. A relaonship comes to an end or
our job comes to an end. Everything in this phenome-
nal world is impermanent and nothing lasts forever.
We should look upon these situaons not as disasters
but as opportunies to start again.
What most of us don't realize is that a fresh start is
available to us in every moment. You don’t have to
wait unl the New Year because a fresh start is availa-
ble to us in every breath. When we breathe in, we are
actually taking in part of the universe into our bodies.
As we breathe out, we are literally breathing out part
of ourselves to the enre universe. So we are con-
nected not only karmically with everyone in the uni-
verse; but, we are connected on a physical level as
well.
Gandhi once said, "Live your life as if you were to
die tomorrow, but have your visions as if you will live
forever."
How would you live your life differently if you knew
you were going to die next week? Wouldn’t your pri-
ories suddenly change? While having a clean house
is nice, it is not as important as some other things. My
guess is that you would want to spend more me with
your family members, and hopefully spend more me
doing spiritual pracce.
So, if we are going to have a fresh start, I'd like to
suggest a daily meditaon pracce. And, as part of
that pracce I'd like to suggest we focus on the Four
Great Efforts. These Four Great Efforts were taught by
the Buddha himself. They relate to the concept of
karma in which all acons are classified as either
wholesome or unwholesome. Wholesome, meaning
we help and are of benefit to others; and unwhole-
some, meaning we harm ourselves or others through
body, speech or mind.
THE FOUR GREAT EFFORTS ARE:
1. An effort to diminish the unwholesome mental
states that have already arisen. Maybe you are aware
of anger, greed or jealousy in your mind.
2. To prevent those unwholesome mental states that
have not arisen from arising. Perhaps you don't have
a problem with anger – so be aware of that – and
guard against developing anger and harming others.
3. To strengthen those wholesome mental states that
are already developed. If you are compassionate or
paent, for example, you would connue to work to
strengthen them - being even kinder and more com-
passionate.
4. To culvate and develop the wholesome states that
have not yet arisen. Again, being aware or mindful of
those good states of mind – such as generosity or pa-
ence – and trying to culvate them.
I am sure many of you are familiar with the won-
der Sufi mysc, Rumi, who wrote beauful love po-
ems to God. I’d like to share with you a wonderful
quote by Rumi who said:
“Come come whoever you are
Wanderer, worshipper, lover of leaving — it doesn't
ma/er.
Ours is not a caravan of despair.
Come, even though you have broken your vow a hun-
dred mes.
Come. Come again, Come.”
So realize that we have a fresh start available to us
not only now in this New Year but also in every mo-
ment. As Rumi says so eloquently even if you have
broken your vow a hundred mes – come, come back
to your spiritual pracce, whatever pracce you en-
gage in.
Come back in this New Year to "awaken your heart"
by avoiding harming others through body, speech or
mind. Come back to being kinder and more compas-
sionate to all beings without disncon. Come back by
releasing grudges, angers, hurts and past pains. Come
back by forgiving those who have harmed us. Come
back by being a beacon to lead others by example
from darkness to light, from falsehood to truth and
from wrong to right.
I believe that these enlightened qualies are best
accomplished through the development of a daily
meditaon pracce and toward working to achieve
the Four Great Efforts.

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 15 January 2014
D id you know that
88 percent of New
Year’s Resoluons
are broken, including the 68
percent who merely resolve
to enjoy life more?
We're trying to ignite our
passions and follow our bliss.
But somewhere along the
line, the fire gets snuffed out
and we're le5 disappointed.
If you have the same resolu-
ons year a5er year, with no real progress toward them,
take heart. When it comes to scking with choices that are
in our best interest, something we're not aware of is hob-
bling nearly all of us. One glance at the stascs proves the
point:
• 40 percent of execuves quit or are fired within 18
months of taking the posion.
• 60 percent of execuves report they make poor deci-
sions about as o5en as good ones.
• 90 percent of inmate relaonships don’t last a life-
me.
• 61,535 ta/oos were removed in 2009.
You see, every choice has a life of its own. Like your life,
your choices go through an evoluonary process. So the
sacred invitaon to you is to adjust your taccs as your
choice evolves. While your path may have many twists and
turns, the key is to stay focused on the core feelings that
accompany following your bliss, including freedom, love,
fulfillment, inner peace, balance and joy.
Hold ght to these feelings and let your thinking be flexi-
ble. You’ll find that adapng to evolving choices gets easier
as you pracce the feeling of going with the flow—growing
your divine ability to create your bliss.
Which taccs can you use to flex your thinking and im-
prove your potenal for making more sasfying choices
over the long haul?
In their book, Decisive, Chip and Dan Heath (two of my
favorite thought leaders) pinpoint key moments in your trip
down the decision-making road where the wheels can fall
off without you even knowing it. Here are two biggies that
you're probably not aware of, along with taccs for avoiding
them.
1) You define a choice too narrowly, only giving yourself two
choices. For example, when vacaon me rolls around,
you’re mulling over whether to visit your relaves or go to
the beach. But this limited mindset causes you to overlook
opons that might be be/er for you.
What to do about it? Expand your set of choices. Think
broader. Instead of thinking: Should I do this OR that? Ask
yourself: Is there a way I can do this AND that? Go for the
win-win.
Another opon is to expand the topic to include consid-
ering the best use for your money. For example, is there a
leaky faucet or creaky car that you’ve been ignoring?
2) You use a Pros and Cons list to analyze your opons. But
this ever-popular strategy has a catch: you could trick your-
self into thinking you’re being very scienfic because you’ve
collected lots of data. However, biases in your thinking can
lead you to gather self-serving data. You’ll leap to a quick
judgment about a situaon, then you’ll only look for infor-
maon that supports that aEtude.
You don’t realize you’ve cooked the books. Data in a
spreadsheet isn’t necessarily supreme logic. What’s really
happening is that your brain is following orders dictated by
your emoons, giving extra weight to the informaon that
supports your desires. I’ll admit that I’ve unwiEngly fallen
into this trap many mes — I was oblivious to my biases.
Also, the hardwiring in your brain seeks instant grafica-
on. If you’re yearning for sand and surf, the non-conscious
part of your brain is wired to jusfy that vacaon instead of
considering be/er uses for your money. It’s only the con-
scious part of your brain, which you can control, that has
the ability to choose to delay the payoff.
We honestly do try to choose the opons that will be
best for us, for the longest period of me. But as it turns
out, we are atrocious predictors. We think we know more
than we really do. In recent studies, doctors who felt com-
pletely certain about a diagnosis ended up misdiagnosing
40% of cases. Also, students who felt 99 percent sure of
their predicons sll missed the mark 27 percent of the
me.
The point isn’t to make perfect decisions every me, but
to be aware of the ways your brain is wired to make snap
decisions that feel good now. To make the wisest choice,
take a step back and look at your situaon from the broad-
est perspecve you can muster.
From this wider viewpoint, queson all of your assump-
ons about the current situaon. Check to see if some emo-
ons might be geEng more emphasis than is warranted.
Look for more opons, weight them from a variety of per-
specves; and a5er your decision, make tweaks when more
data becomes available.
Since the final step in decision-making is living with your
choice, think about how the future might unfold. A5er
you’ve made your choice, keep your eyes peeled for new
informaon that alters the situaon. Take advantage of new
opportunies that come along that weren’t available to you
at the get-go. There's always a path to bliss. Stay on it and
keep moving. One way or another, you'll get there.
Which decision-making traps flummoxed your progress
toward your bliss in the past, and how can you avoid them
today?

EVOLVING… A GUIDE FOR CONSCIOUS LIVING 16 January 2014
Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) You are exploring issues of power, and also vulnerability. Letting go of control to the Universe can bring up painful memories of when parents or authority figures didn’t come through for you. Meditate to forgive those past wounds, so you can be flexible to your soul’s guidance in-stead of rigidly adhering to your in-tellect and will power. As old energy moves up and out, be physically ac-tive, with sports or vigorous yoga.
Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Mars is making your feel quite sexy and powerful! Speaking up for your needs in intimate relationships about emotions, money and sexuali-ty will help build trust within part-nerships and self-confidence in you. You may also need to stand up to friends or colleagues who have strong opinions that differ from yours. This doesn’t mean fighting or giving in, but knowing you can hold your own truth and still be loved and appreciated! Aries (March 21 – April 19) January is time to balance career with relationships. You can feel pulled in many directions that all feel important. Meditate to create a list of priorities and let you partner know your numerous duties and plans to carry them out. Also sched-ule time in time with him/her, so s/he feels secure. In this way you won’t feel pulled by your relation-
ship. In fact, that quiet bonding time will empower you for the tasks ahead!
Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Ever heard the saying, “Your body believes every word you say”? Think about how your words and thoughts impact your physical health. For instance, “I can’t stand that”, can lead to knee problems. Or “I’m tired of this situation”, can bring on fa-tigue. Be alert to the messages you send your body and replace them with empowering ideas! Also, is it possible to start a yoga, meditation or stress reduction group at work?
Gemini (May 21 – June 20) Start the New Year by releasing re-sentments that cause lack of trust. The Universe wants to bring you relationships that are deep and true, but it can’t if you’re blocking your heart with old hurts and fears. Medi-tate to connect with forgiveness en-ergy that will unburden you and put you in the flow of divine abundance with love and money!
Cancer (June 21 – July 22) It’s an ongoing effort to release childhood/family “stuff” that bogs down your current relationships! Meditate with your partner to be in the present moment together. As-sure him/her that you’re working to heal old emotional wounds. Part-nered or not, go through drawers, closets, basement, attic, or garage
and get rid of junk! This type of 3rd dimensional cleaning will also clean your heart!
Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) You don’t like to show people your vulnerable side. As a Leo, you prefer to meet life with all your strengths, as the fierce and lovely lion! But in-ner turmoil can take its toll on your mind and body. Open up to your spiritual guides -- whether a trusted friend/mentor, healer or angel pres-ence – and allow your wounds to be exposed, cleaned and healed. You will feel serene and will shimmer with vibrant health once again!
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) You are so self-critical, and that af-fects your relationships. The Uni-verse is challenging you to improve your self worth by becoming aware of the negative messages you con-stantly run through your head. Write down your yucky thoughts as they come up this month. Then burn the list!! Your insights and healing make it easier to bring your full, au-thentic self to people for more ful-filling bonds!
Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) You aren’t often defensive, but you can be passive-aggressive. Powerful Mars is in your sign, challenging you to draw healthy boundaries in areas of family, friends and money issues. Be clear about your needs, and about what doesn’t work for you an-ymore. This will make you more “real” and actually improve relation-ships, since you’re no longer sim-mering beneath your surface. Try intense yoga classes or vigorous workouts to release tension.
Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) Your mind is filled with landmines this month! Be wary about sudden conclusions. Your subconscious is triggered by people around you, but they are only acting as agents to shed light on deeper issues. Medi-
tate to become centered. Journal your feelings. Write until you get past the surface and see what the Universe is revealing. Free yourself from entire patterns of unhappiness rather than be stuck on one instance that is only an example of the pat-tern!
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) It’s important to surround yourself with likeminded people. It is ex-hausting to hide your authentic self! Meditate on acquaintances and see which ones actually resonate with your spirituality and your truth. Also look at your activities and see if they feel your soul. Examine goals and be sure they’re a path that leads to ful-fillment. Make the changes you need to make if things are out of align-ment!

Spiritual Horoscope—by Aluna Michaels
January 2014
Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Happy birthday Capricorn! This is a powerful time for expressing your dreams. Meditate to visualize what you want to achieve this year. Then also look within to see what could be blocking your ability to receive. You can be your own worst critic, so this inner work will help you let go of self-sabotage and make dreams reality!
