AADE Lafayette Chapter Members,
Happy New Year! I hope your holidays were filled with laughter and many happy memories. On behalf of the AADE board and committee members, best wishes to you and yours in the year of our Lord 2013.
Our guest speaker this month will be Austin Groover, who will discuss “Casing Drilling: What it Does and Why it Matters.” Please help me in welcoming Groover to Lafayette.
Rotary drilling with casing is not new:• Did you know that rotary drilling was
initially introduced with casing as the drillstring? Drillpipe did not exist.
• Did you know that the Spindletop discovery
well was drilled with 10 inch casing?• Did you know that a patent was issued in
1890 that initially launched casing drilling

and another patent issued in 1926 that introduced retrievable and re-runnable casing bits?
Relatively speaking, Drilling with Casing (CwD (Casing While Drilling)/DwL (Drilling with Liner)) has just recently gained traction and demanded attention. History records indicate that drilling with casing has been evolving for over a century to date. Technological advancements have just recently allowed it to be a viable option for well planning and operations.
Operators are looking for effective methods to reduce the risks and maximize value in challenging well programs. These challenges include: drilling through depleted reservoirs, lost circulation zones, rubble zones, weak formations, shallow water-flow zones, and tar intervals. One method to assist in overcoming these hazards is to
utilize casing to isolate the problem area by combining drilling and casing in one operation.
Join us this month in expanding your knowledge on drilling with casing.

Apache fracks with Natural gas
HHP INSIGHT reports, Apache is fracking with natural gas in Oklahoma, working with the global E&P services providers Halliburton and Schlumberger — and with Caterpillar, which stepped up its commercialization schedule to provide its new Dynamic Gas Blending dual fuel upfits for 3512C engines.
Field gas is Apache’s target fuel. For now, however, engines for Granite Wash formation hydraulic fracturing operations in the area of Elk City, Okla., are running on compressed natural gas on the Schlumberger side and liquefied natural gas for Halliburton.
“We simplified the program by using CNG and LNG,” says Mike Bahorich, Apache executive VP for technology.
By the end of this week, a full 12-truck spread is to be powered by LNG — an industry first for a production operation, Bahorich told HHP Insight. LNG fuel for the Halliburton-supported site is supplied by Linde.
eIA: 2013 u.s. oil use up o.3 percent
RIGZONE reports, U.S. oil demand is expected to inch up by a modest 0.3 percent in 2013 and 2014, after falling 1.6 percent to a 15-year low in 2012, government forecasters said Tuesday.
Demand is expected to grow to 18.71 million barrels a day in 2013, from 18.65 million barrels a day in 2012.
Projected demand in 2014 of 18.77 million barrels a day still would lag the 2011 level.
Demand for gasoline — the most widely used petroleum product in the world's biggest oil consumer — is expected to flatten out at the 2012 level of 8.73 million barrels a day through 2014 as the impact of slow growth in the driving-age population, retirement of less-fuel efficient vehicles and improvement in fuel-economy standards take hold.
Demand slipped in 2012 by 0.2 percent, the third straight decline, hitting an 11-year low.
The EIA said all of the major petroleum categories contributed to the slide in consumption in 2012 despite a continued economic recovery and little change in year-over-year inflation-adjusted retail fuel prices.
Most of the consumption growth in 2013 and 2014 is expected to come from distillate fuel oil — an umbrella grouping of diesel fuel and heating oil — and from liquefied petroleum gas. Gains in these products will come from "continued growth in industrial use as well as the assumption of near-normal weather this winter compared with much warmer-than-normal weather last winter," the EIA said.
Distillate use is expected to grow 0.8 percent in 2013 and 2014, after a 3.3 percent fall in 2012, to 3.77 million barrels a day, a three-year low.
U.S. crude oil output, led by a gain in production from shale-oil fields tapped by new techniques, is expected to rise 14.1 percent in 2013, to 7.3 million barrels a day. A further 8.2 percent rise in 2014 is expected to put output at 7.9 million barrels, the highest since 1988.
Output from the federal Gulf of Mexico is expected to drop 60,000 barrels a day, to average 1.26 million barrels a day. Production is expected to climb to 1.37 million barrels a day in 2013, and to 1.44 million barrels a day in 2014, as new projects ramp up.
Since peaking in 2005 at 12.5 million barrels a day, U.S. net oil imports, including crude oil, have been falling, the EIA said. Net imports declined to 7.5 million bbl/d in 2012, and EIA expects imports to continue dropping, to 6 million barrels a day in 2014.
The share of total U.S. consumption met by net fuel imports peaked at more than 60 percent in 2005 and fell to an average of 40 percent in 2012, and EIA expects the net import share to average 32 percent in 2014 because of continued substantial increases in domestic crude oil production.

The American Association of Drilling Engineers is a non-profit volunteer organization founded in New Orleans in 1978 and made up of an affiliation of independent chapters licensed and governed by a national board.
Formation of the AADE was based on the fact that no existing drilling industry organization was consistently providing technical exchange specifically for drilling engineers.
The early success and acceptance of this effort led to the expansion of AADE. National membership is nearing 5,000 active members and has remained steady despite the fluctuations experienced by the industry.
The AADE has experienced continued growth in membership and reputation by focusing on its mission, vision and value statement.
AADE offers a forum for the exchange of information among its members and guests, specifically on drilling related topics. AADE chapters generally meet once a month where programs are presented by knowledgeable industry leaders in an informal luncheon or dinner environment.
AADE also offers forums and annual technical conferences to provide the opportunity for industry experts to present on current topics.

Drilling twist: environmentalists want to keep idle offshore oil rigs
LOGA reports, idle oil rigs are at the center of an unusual battle over fish in the Gulf of Mexico.
In a twist on their usual positions, oil companies and the federal agencies regulating them want to remove the old rigs, while fishermen and environmental groups are fighting to keep them in place.
For the oil companies, the rigs pose safety and liability threats. Fishermen and environmentalists see them as a boon to sea life.
Hundreds of the rigs have stood in the same spot for decades, long enough for corals to anchor on them and draw schools of fish. Sea life on the rigs is so abundant that taking them out causes environmental and economic harm, say critics of the removal program.
Fishermen and environmental groups are pushing the National Marine Fisheries Service to designate oil rigs and other artificial reefs in the
Gulf of Mexico as essential fish habitat — a label that would require oil companies to get approval from the fisheries service before removing them.
But that could be complicated.Vast areas of the Gulf of Mexico,
including seagrass beds and underwater canyons, are managed as essential fish habitat, all of them naturally occurring environments. The designation is set for individual fish species, such as red snapper or grouper, and requires proof that the species needs that habitat for survival.
If the fisheries service considers rigs and artificial reefs as important as the natural ecosystem, it will be a first.
The designation could also backfire for those who want to fish at rigs and artificial reefs, because the essential fish habitat designation sometimes carries tighter fishing restrictions.
Meanwhile, oil companies want to make sure they are not forced to maintain inactive rigs — including warning lights needed for navigation — forever.
