Light permeates the story of Epiphany. A daz-zling star illuminates the heavens and leads the magi to Christ. The baby born to a family in need of shelter is revealed to the world as the Messiah. Remarkably, dreams and visions
reveal this extraordinary truth as the gift-bearing magi come to worship the newborn Savior.
The Christmas season stirred our whole community to offer our hearts in worship and praise in celebration of God’s gift to us in Christ. Dreamers and visionaries abound at our Cathedral! As Advent progressed, the Cathedral was adorned by greens and lights through the vision and skill of the Altar Guild and the creativity and care of our commit-tee of artists. The Messiah and Lessons and Carols created a transformational blending of high musicianship and worship, as did the musical offerings at all of our Christmas services. Our new children’s pageant, co-ordinated by Kim Knight and with the help of the Vergers, staff, and so many others, shone forth with holiness. The pageant not
only kindled delight, but also brought tears of tenderness and joy to folks of all ages. Diminutive angels, sheep and shepherds shared the greatest story we know: In Christ, God has come to be like us, to take on our pain and joy, and even our death, to bind up our infirmities and call us to new and abundant life.
In the midst of this high season of faith, we joyfully celebrated the Ordination of the seventh Bishop of Lex-ington. Along with our Presiding Bishop, we welcomed several visiting bishops, community leaders and other
ecumenical guests. How blessed we are to begin this new season of ministry and mission with Bishop Doug and Kaye Hahn, and how fitting that we
do so as we move into this season of Light. Our Cathedral and Diocese have much to be grateful for as we begin to dream dreams together and envision where God is calling us to serve.
God has a dream to heal the world and Epiphany calls us to take our part in this story of reconciliation. As God’s Light (Christ) and Life (Holy Spirit) are born anew in us, I wish us the blessing of holy dreams and vision as we carry Christ’s light into the world.
With love,
Carol

THE MURAL PROJECTArt at the Cathedral’s
involvement in Epiphany-tide began nine years ago, when brown paper was rolled out and the children and youth painted figures which had been out-lined by lead artists. The scenes
were the trip to Bethlehem from Nazareth, the shep-herds and the wise men. These were hung in the Great Hall for a few weeks. After two years of paper murals, large canvases were purchased and more lasting paint was used to create the manger scene, the wise men, and the angels with the shepherds. This year two new scenes have been added; Jesus in the Temple in his youth, Guy Ellis, adult art leader; and an-other version of the shepherd scene, led by Cate Wagoner and her granddaughter Phoebe.
HOLY LUTES“Holy Lutes," an exhibit of abstract art and poetry,
opens February 10 with a gallery tour by artist Constance Grayson. Beginning in the Chapel, Grayson will tell of her inspiration for this exhibit. Reading Love Poems from God (Daniel Ladinsky), she explored the world of sacred poetry for the first time. Creatively she moved gracefully
from word to painting in her ab-stract, colorist style. An exhibit birthed in her mind’s eye: Holy Lutes.
As she adopted a poem she painted an abstract which expressed her emotions and thought. Her selections come from around the world and across time from the ancient to the modern.
“Throughout the time spent working on this exhibit,” says Grayson, “I have been more impressed with the similari-ties I have observed among the religious traditions than with the differences.” Her paintings for this exhibit em-phasize the similarities in her use of a consistent color palette and painting style.
Constance Grayson enjoys memberships in various Southern art societies, including Lexington Art League.
She will be present at Gallery Hop on Friday, February 15, and will speak again on Sunday, February 17, in the Chapel, as well as at Commodores on March 1. The exhibit closes Sun-day, March 31. Ϯ

Icons in Transformation: It's a Family AffairBy Amanda Tudor
ART AT THE CATHEDRAL
In February 2011 Art at the Cathedral at Christ Church launched the
USA tour of "Icons in Transformation." You probably remem-ber what an impact Russian-born artist
Ludmila Pawlowska and her husband and "Icons" manager, Jan Lech, had on our church and our community while they were here! Everything about the "Icons" exhibit -- from unpack-ing the giant crates to placing and hanging the artwork to coordinating the schedule of events to enjoying the inspiring and transformative works of art while "Icons" -- stayed with us.
As a matter of fact, our Art at the Cathedral Chair, Jesse Mark, set the standard for this tour, and since 2011, churches around the country (from Seattle, WA, to Erie, PA) have been contact-ing Jesse to find out how to coordinate and implement the exhibit successfully. To my delight and surprise, my sister,
Amy Jo (AJ) Noyes, coordinated and launched the "Icons in Transformation" exhibit at St. Paul's Cathedral in Erie, PA, and I was able to join her that week-end and help her set up the opening reception on Saturday, December 1, 2012.
It was wonderful to reunite with Ludmila Pawlowska and
Jan Lech, to hear stories of their USA tour of "Icons" and to find out that they have had a rewarding experience meeting so many people and worshiping in differ-ent churches, along with selling a wide range of art throughout the last two years. Ludmila and Jan both expressed such ap-preciation and warm memories from their experience with Art at
the Cathedral, the exhibit that started everything. When I first met Ludmila and Jan I had a strong desire to know them better and to call them friends, and I am so pleased that I was able to work with my sister to host their visit in Erie. After Erie, the exhibit will head to Indianapolis this year. Art at the Cathedral will announce the dates and location for anyone interested. Ϯ

Some thirty years ago the Christ Church Vestry gave Mrs. Robert Breeden permission to form a Needlepoint Guild. The first project completed was the kneelers in the Chapel. In 1990, when the pews in the Nave were re-covered, Mrs.
Breeden was asked to design needlepoint for the kneel-ers.
The kneel-ers are given as tributes, for anniversaries, as memorials, and to represent the par-ishes across the Diocese and our six former Bish-ops, to mention a
few of the reasons a kneeler has been finished. There are many needlepoint artists in our congregation who have worked diligently through the years.
To complete the project, there are 27 kneelers that need pieces commissioned and we can complete the project and have all of the kneelers dedicated. There are three currently being worked. Nearly 500 pieces of needlework can be found in our Cathedral.
Interested? How do you go about participating in this project? Are you someone who needlepoints? Contact one of the committee (Nancy
Freeman, Lu Crehore, DanaDavis or Car-olyn Ware) and let them know of your interest. We are currently working with M’s Canvashouse on the design of the kneelers, and one of the committee can go with you to consult with Meredith Willett at M’s. Once you have picked a design and the piece is ready to be worked, you can do it yourself if you are a needle-pointer. If you do not needlepoint but want to commis-sion a kneeler, there are a number of women who will do the work for you. When it is finished it is taken to an upholsterer and mounted and placed in the church.
ECW, as one of its current projects, is working on a book about our kneelers and the other pieces of needle-work in the church. All pieces of needlework will be included, so we are particularly interested in getting them all finished. Won’t you join in completing this project? Ϯ

CATHEDRAL OUTREACH
It’s hard to decide what is the best part of Angel Tree. It might be how excited everyone is to receive their Angel. It might be the joy of buying a real gift – a gift for which there truly is no expectation of re-ceiving anything in return. It might be knowing that
someone will truly have a day made easier, less hungry, or less worried about being needy at Christmas. Angel Tree … it is a good and simple thing!
And yet, it isn’t simple, for Angel Tree takes many, many volunteers. Generous people who donate both time and money to buy gifts, volunteers to move gifts from one place to another, helpers to put together food bags, happy faces to spend time with Harrison parents. Of the many wonderful outreach ministries of Christ Church Cathedral, perhaps none requires more people to make it a success.
Not only are the more than 150 recipients of our Angel Tree gifts deeply appreciative by this demonstra-tion of God’s love, but we are grateful for the many hands
and hearts that have made this ministry such joyful work! Thank you, Christ Church family, for the abundant gener-osity you share through Angel Tree. Ϯ

CATHEDRAL OUTREACH
Christ Church Cathedral has many jewels in its crown of
contributions to life in our community. Howev-er, one of its brightest, and yet somewhat hid-
den, is our ministry of the Ecumenical Preschool, which was begun by CCC about 23 years ago and has been a collaborative effort between the Cathedral and Second Presbyterian Church since then. When the Cathedral’s ef-forts began, there was “no room at the inn (cathedral)” to house the school, so Second graciously offered to supply the space and has generously done so ever since.
So why are we involved in a preschool that is housed in another church? Well, that is one of the several unique facets of the school:• It is ecumenical in that churches of two different de-
nominations sponsor it.• It is diverse in having housed children from every
continent on the earth except Antarctica -- this se-mester’s count alone includes eight students from different ethnicities and cultures.
• It is multigenerational in that it is housed across the hall from the Best Friends program, which caters to those with Alzheimer’s.There is not one other preschool school in Lexington
that offers all of this. The children and the Best Friends interact frequently,
and on Wednesdays they share a time when The Rev. Lois Howard (one of the originators of the school) tells a Godly
Play story to the children and the Best Friends, known to them as the Grandmas and Grandpas. It is dear and is the time when you see the Grandmas and Grandpas at their most active and aware. The fondness the two groups share is evident in the hugs they eagerly give one another when parting.
As explained in the May 5, 1993, Lexington Herald-Leader, both programs share part of their schedules each week because they have common interests like music, games, exercise, walking and worship.
Kathy Healey is the director of the school and leads the children in a myriad of activities throughout the half-day the school meets each weekday. In a large bright sunlight room, the children are painting, learning sign language, learning Span-ish, singing and getting themselves prepared for school. The cost is very reasonable, ranging from $220 a month to $100 -- depending on the number of days the child attends. Also, four scholarships are offered each semester, which again encourages diversity in the school. Needless to say, support from the Cathedral is critical. The amazing thing is what Ms. Healey accomplishes on so little. And the reverberations go throughout our community.
It is a community outreach program that we can take great pride in – but most of all the school would like your support and active interest. Take a moment and give Ms. Healey a call (at the preschool, 254-9548, or at 223-5563) – visiting there might be the high light of your week. Ϯ

Epiphany is a time to cel-ebrate Christ’s light in the world! On the Feast of the Epiphany, January 6, we follow the magi and the
bright star to Christ. On January 13, we will celebrate Christ’s Baptism as we introduce two new young men to the life of Christ. After their Baptism, they will receive the light of Christ, be sealed by the Holy Spirit, and be marked as Christ’s own forever.
We all begin our journey into the community of Christ at our Baptism. On January 4-6, 17 youth in Grades 9-10 will retreat to Natural Bridge as part of their Confirma-tion preparation. There, they will be reminded that their Christian journey began the day their parents had them baptized. As we study what it means to be confirmed
into the Episcopal Church we will re-member our Baptism through water and light. As we look at the promises of the Baptismal Covenant together we will look forward to May 5 when many of our young people will claim those vows as their own.
The Confirmation process for our youth is about remembering their Baptism and finding Christ’s light
within them and around them. To point them toward the light, youth will receive a mentor – an older adult who lives a life of prayer and action. They will meet with their mentors 10 times over the next few months as they pray together. Youth will also participate in community service, try out a new ministry, meet with a priest, journal, and read the Gospel of Luke together. We hope and pray that all these things will bring them closer to a life of Christ’s light and renewal.
Join with me in praying for our young people during this time of preparation.
O God, you prepared your disciples for the coming of the Spirit through the teaching of your Son Jesus Christ: Make the hearts and minds of your servants ready to receive the blessing of the Holy Spirit, that they may be filled with the strength of his presence; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BCP, 819). Ϯ

SUNDAY SCHOOL SPRING SEMESTERDiscovering God’s welcome is the be-ginning of an exciting journey. To be accepted for who we truly are—pre-cious and beloved by God—is to step into abundant life in God. To live in God’s welcome is a gift available to all;
to share that welcome with the world is our mission. Many people long for a life of meaning and hunger for authen-tic relationships with people who live beyond themselves. If you are eager to explore your relationship with God in a community of welcome, we invite you to step deeper into God’s abun-dance. The Spring semester begins on January 13.
