Making 2013 Your Year
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Actions speak louder than words so this year we are eager to put actions behind our resolu-tions. We have a great team of committee chairs to make us successful. Let’s start by giving them our full support. Committees are the lifeblood of the HBA and the perfect way for members to enhance their membership investment. From advocacy and education to networking and sales & marketing, the HBA has a place for every member to develop personally and professionally. All committees and councils are open to all HBA members unless otherwise noted. HBA staff are eager to help you find the perfect place to meet your needs while serving the association. Leading our team is our new Executive Director Carolyn Maimone. Carolyn is a Lake County native and comes to us with a lifetime of contacts and a very diverse background in Information Technology, Accounting and Management, as well as a history in local politics and a knack for
fundraising. This combination is sure to benefit the Association. Working with Carolyn and her administrative assistant Kelly Hoover are the 2013 committee and council chairs. Gov-
ernmental Affairs will be led by former HBA president Mike Carter (Granger Construction & Development). The Member-ship Committee is looking forward to the leadership of 2011 Spike of the Year and former president Andrew Nutt (Holly Homes). Jim Rahman (Westmont Construction) continues to lead the Green Building Committee that meets jointly with the Remodelers Council. By unanimous vote, the Remodelers elected Bill Wilburth (WC Wilburth Construction) to succeed Joe Williams as chair and Nate Ritter (GreenBuilt Solutions) will assume the role of vice chair. The Sales & Marketing Council will be led by Jeanne Abernathy (Southern Style Management). See Jeanne’s article on page 4. Don Magruder (RoMac Lum-ber & Supply) is assuming the Community Service Chair and Susan Adams (RoMac Lumber & Supply) is our new chair of the Spike Club.
Special events planned for 2013 include the Parade of Homes led by Dale Roberts (Dale E. Roberts and Assoc.) for more information see page 5, the April 19 annual golf tournament led for a second year in a row by chair Chuck Hiott (Booth, Ern, Straughan, Hiott, Inc.). Watch for more details as they unfold. Be sure to put on your calendar the January 19 Home Show chaired by Loretta Maimone (Loretta C. Maimone Inc.) It is sure to be a fantastic event and an excellent opportunity for member vendors to network with each other. Last minute tables MAY be available . Check with the office. Another home show will be announced for Fall 2013. The Sales & Marketing Committee is also planning three Morning Buzz programs. The first will be on Wednesday, Feb 6 from 8:30 AM - 10 AM at the REALTORS® Association of Lake & Sumter Counties. Look for more details on page 4.
I look forward to the board of directors leading an out-reach to our Sumter County members, developing with their input a better relationship with Sumter County and growing our membership base in the county.
As a reminder in closing, while uncertainty remains as we move into 2013, housing is making its comeback. Keep that thought and refuse to participate in a slowdown. Our 2013 Parade of Homes is going to highlight the best that the indus-try has to offer. Trilogy by Shea Homes is our Dream Com-munity and valuable opportunities are still available for en-tries, virtual entries, and sponsorships.
An HBA is as strong as its members and membership value is gained through involvement. Make 2013 the year that you joined the action and earned the biggest return ever on your investment. I’ll be right there with you. You can bank on it!
May we all fulfill our resolutions, and have a prosperous and healthy New Year. ~Bud

SALES AND MARKETING
The Sales & Marketing Committee will be hosting the February Buzz seminar at the Lake & Sumter Real-tors Association with members of HBA as guest speakers. We’ll be informing the Realtors about how to sell new construction, building & selling green, and financing new homes. As the resale inventory con-tinues to tighten, more Realtors will be turning to new construction homes for their buyers!
Recently I attended a key note speech by Barbara Corcoran, the super-successful housing expert on the Today Show, investor/shark on ABC’s “Shark Tank”, and weekly contributor to the New York Daily News and More Maga-zine. Barbara turned a $1,000 loan into a $5 billion dollar real estate business, which she subsequently sold for $66 million dollars in 2001! Her message to the audience was that she invested in her business during the down times, picking up cheap office space and desks, and then grew her offices when times were better. I just purchased her book, Shark Tales! Wishing a happy and healthy New Year to all!

We have exciting news. Our 2013 Dream Community is Trilogy by Shea Homes, located 100 Falling Acorn Avenue, Groveland, FL. I had the privilege of touring the spacious and elegant 57,000 sq. ft. Magnolia House, grounds and model homes with Jeff Gersh, Area Vice President of Shea Victoria Gardens. Magnolia House, where the 2013 Parade of Homes banquet will be held on February 22, is the centerpiece of the Trilogy community. Destined to exceed even the highest expectations, this resort club features all the latest in dining,
fitness, relaxation, and social connectivity. Rich architecture, modern décor, and 5-star amenities blend to create a welcom-ing atmosphere, certain to awe and inspire on a daily basis.
As of this writing we are still receiving entries into the parade. I’d like to remind everyone that virtual entries are an ef-fective way for those who don’t have a home or remodel currently available to enter to take advantage of the marketing and exposure of the parade. Every virtual entry receives the same space in the guidebook and on the parade website. For those who are not tech savvy, we can help. Just talk to our HBA staff,
I am also pleased to announce that for the first time we have the opportunity to extend our entry deadline and still meet publication deadlines for the guidebook. We are now able to accept entries at the regular fee rates until the extended dead-line of Friday, JAN. 25, 2013. A late fee will go into effect after the 25th of January.
Associate members can also take advantage of the parade. Numerous sponsorship opportunities are available that offer various levels of marketing exposure. You will want to be part of the exciting night at the parade banquet when winners are announced. It’s a unique opportunity to network with prominent builder/developer leaders from around the area. Being a sponsor will designate you as a noteworthy supporter of the Parade of Homes. Look for the sponsorship form in this newslet-ter or on the HBA website. Sponsor payments may be made online, too.
Parade volunteers are currently being sought to assist with the banquet preparations, to drive judges, and to keep guide-books in racks around the area. Contact the HBA office if you would like to be a parade volunteer. It’s going to be a big event with many opportunities for all.

HBA Annual Christmas Party

Usually, just before Christmas, a hush falls over the wood commod-ity markets as dealers and traders focus more on Santa Claus and cookies than sticks of lumber. This year, on the contrary, there is no Christmas rest as the wood com-modity markets remain extremely active. The Home Builders Asso-
ciation Wood Commodity Index (Index) for December has risen 2.2% to $379.24 per thousand, primarily on the strength of spruce dimensional. Lumber futures point to continued price increases in products throughout 2013.
The lumber portion of the Index increased 6.3% to $393.79 per thousand with 2x4 spruce dimensional pric-ing rising 5%-10%, depending on the specific length. 2x6 spruce increased more dramatically with plus 15% jumps in pricing over the last 30 days. Wide width short pine gave back 10% in pricing while the other lengths crawled forward in price less than 2.5%.
In the plywood portion of the Index, the market was basically flat from 30 days ago. OSB sheathings gave back $5 per thousand while T&G CDX enjoyed a 3.5% increase. The result for the sheathing portion of the In-dex was a minimal loss of 0.8%, which is basically flat. The big news is OSB and CDX sheathings did not give back all of their gains from last month’s super storm Hur-ricane Sandy. That says a lot about this market, espe-cially given the time of the year.
After January 1, 2013, the floodgates of price in-creases are going to open wide, and eve-rything from metal to roofing shingles is going up. The biggest and the ugliest is the 30% increase in drywall pricing. Ear-lier in the year, we were skeptical if this large of an increase again this year would stick, but Hurricane Sandy may have just applied the glue.
Builders and remodelers should be very careful on long-term quotes and bids; but, most importantly, price protec-tion clauses are a must. Failing to stay on top of price increases could really cost building companies a lot of cash in 2013. Be smart--know what is going on in pric-ing.
Thank you for reading the Lumber and Commodity Report. I would like wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
