Libraries in phone boxes have been cropping up

all over Britain since 2009.

Community members are able to take a book or

leave a book at no cost.

In the USA there is a similar thing happening

with the Little Free Library movement where li-

braries are being set up in small boxes all over

the country.

Unusual Libraries

Vale Bryce Courtenay

Bryce Courtenay was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1933. After

marrying his first wife, Benita, he emigrated to Australia and his novels

are primarily set in Australia or South Africa. Bryce wrote 21 books in 23

years including a non-fiction memoir April Fools Day which is about his

son‘s struggle with hemophilia and AIDS.

In 2001 Bryce was named as the bestselling Australian novelist of the

decade. He was also made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2005

and also featured in the 2010 Australia Post Legends stamp series.

Bryce once commented ―In the end, if someone said: ‗Here lies Bryce

Courtenay, a storyteller‘, my life will have been worthwhile.‖ He certainly

achieved that.

Agatha has fallen in love -

again. This time it's the local

gardener, George Marston, she

has her eye on. But competi-

tion for his attention abounds.

With her shameless determina-

tion Agatha will do anything to

get her man.

Bram Deagan dreams of

bringing his family from Ireland

to join him in Australia, where

he now runs a successful

trading business. But when a

typhus epidemic strikes

Ireland, it leaves the Deagan

family decimated. And, with

other members of the family

scattered round the world,

there is only Maura Deagain

left to look after her orphaned

nieces and nephew.

The decidedly raven-haired

Miss Phryne Fisher returns to

delve deep into the dark under-

belly of Melbourne 1929.

Pretty little golden-haired girls

are going missing in Mel-

bourne. But they're not just

pretty. Three of them are preg-

nant, poor girls from the harsh

confines of the Magdalen

Laundry and people are getting

nervous......

When tragedy strikes close to

home, Mickey and his loyal

new friends—sharp-witted Ema

and the adorably charming

Spoon—find themselves at the

centre of a terrifying mystery

involving the shooting of their

classmate Rachel. Now, not

only does Mickey need to keep

himself and his friends safe

from the Butcher of Lodz, but

he needs to figure out who

shot Rachel—no matter what it

takes.

David Ash, detective of the

paranormal, is sent to the mys-

terious Comraich Castle, se-

cluded deep in the Scottish

countryside, to investigate a

strange, high-profile case: a

man has been found crucified

in a room that was locked.

Featuring one of Herbert's best

-loved characters, first encoun-

tered in The Ghosts of Sleath

and Haunted, Ash is a ghost

story like no other, that will

chill you to the core.

Home is where the heart is –

but what happens to your heart

when the people you love are

scattered around the world?

In this story of three women's

search for a place to call

home, Maggie Alderson

crosses continents and genera-

tions to explore how we find

happiness – and whether love

can survive betrayal.

In the enthralling third volume

of 'Empire‘ Anthony Riches

takes the legions deep into

north Britannia, where the

survivors of the rebellion still

hope for revenge.

The Romans have van-

quished the rebel alliance,

leaving Calgus, Lord of the

Northern Tribes, prisoner of

the chieftains he once led.

But the new Roman leader

will not let them rest. He

forms an audacious plan to

capture Dinpaladyr, the Sel-

govaes' fortress of spears,

and return it to the hands of a

trusted ally.

At the last Community Services Committee Meeting the new library open-

ing hours were confirmed. There has been a trial of these new hours for

six months and this has resulted in the Warwick library closing time

changing to 6 pm on Thursday and Friday and returning to 5.30 on Tues-

day. The Stanthorpe Library is opening from 9 - 12 on a Saturday morn-

ing.

Other changes include now having Kindles for loan, introducing a Face-

book page and the Warwick branch having a Wii console for use within

the library. Photocopying and faxing charges have also been reduced.

The Warwick and Stanthorpe libraries will be open from 9 - 12 on Satur-

day January 26. The official Australia Day holiday is on Monday January

28 and all branches will be closed on this day.

The Stanthorpe branch will be closed on Friday February 1 for the Stan-

thorpe Show holiday.

The Allora branch will be closed on Friday February 8 for the Allora

Show holiday.

The Warwick branch will be closed on Friday April 5 for the Warwick

Show holiday.

Originally from South Africa, Bryce Courtenay was an accomplished writer who catered for a

wide variety of audiences through the use of a vast array of styles and genres. Published in

1998, Jessica tells the story of a young girl over the course of several years living on a rural

property in Australia in the early 20th century.

Jessica‘s life takes an unexpected turn when a forbidden love is found with a man who was

reserved for marriage by Jessica‘s sister Meg with the help of her mother.

When a brutal murder occurs at a neighbouring farm, Jessica protects the killer from mob

justice, an act of compassion which later results in Jessica being banished from her family,

society and eventually from her child, who is born out of wedlock.

I thought Bryce Courtenay gave a wonderful insight into the life of this young girl encounter-

ing life & love as she grew & developed into a young lady and eventually a mother.

I found the book informative and entertaining and a very touching sad story. I would recom-

mend this adult fiction book to readers from juvenile to mature aged readers.
