ASU Violinist Boyang Wang
In Concert & Conversation
Monday, January 14, 20131:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Palo Cristi Church, 3535 E. Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley
Performance followed by a reception
Brandeis National Committee invites the public for an afternoon of music and conversation withASU Violinist Boyang Wang. He and pianist Zhou Jiang will perform works by Beethoven, Ysayeand Japanese-American composer Bright Sheng. He will also speak about his musical journey ona path that began at his fifth birthday party. Following an ancient practice, his parents placed fiveobjects representing different careers on a table and told him to choose one. Without hesitation heskipped over the pen, car, cookie and paintbrush to select a toy violin. His parents immediatelybought a quarter size violin and found a teacher.
Raised in a hutong, a small village within the city of Beijing, Boyang soon found himself playingconcerts in great halls throughout Beijing. He won the Silver and Gold awards at the ChineseNational Violin Competition in 2005 and 2007 respectively. In 2004 he performed for HenryKissinger on one of his visits to China. He has said that after he won the Silver award while he wasin middle school, he realized that "music is part of my body, my soul, it is my everyday life." He saysthat music "can make me feel warm, deep, happiness."
Winning a Special Talent Scholarship at ASU brought him to the US to study with Professor DanWen Jiang, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance.

University President Frederick Lawrence visited IsraelUniversity President Frederick Lawrence visited Israel to take part in an alumni event hosted by U.S. Ambassadorto Israel Daniel Shapiro '91 and his wife Julie Fisher '90. The event coincidentally occurred on the same day thatIsrael and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire, ending a recent spell of violence that resulted in hundreds of fatalities.According to a BrandeisNOW press release, the event "turned into a joyous celebration of the peace," for the morethan 200 alumni, parents and friends of the University who had convened at the ambassador's home. When his turn came to speak, Lawrence talked about the deep connection between Brandeis and Israel, which wereboth founded in 1948.
