The Ste. Anne Community Development Corporation (CDC) has de-cided not to host the annual winter carnival this January due to lack ofsuitable environment. In previous years it was held in the banquet center and the sportscomplex, but seems to lack the outdoors festival experience and atten-dance was low. The CDC through around ideas to host it in the park at the pavilionbut memories of last years -40 weather was quickly mentioned. Otherideas such as holding it in an outdoor tent were also tendered but sincethe CDC runs on the generosity of the Town, businesses, fundraisersand government grants, tents at a cost of $5,000 or more exceeded thefunds available. The CDC has decided to concentrate on developing the pavilion so itcan be suitable for winter events in feature years.

WACKY “Aminals”...

The platypus is among nature’s most unlikely animals. In fact, the firstscientists to examine a specimen believed they were the victims of ahoax. The animal is best described as a hodgepodge of more familiarspecies: the duck (bill and webbed feet), beaver (tail), and otter (bodyand fur). Males are also venomous. They have sharp stingers on theheels of their rear feet and can use them to deliver a strong toxic blow toany foe. Platypuses hunt underwater, where they swim by paddling with theirfront webbed feet and steering with their hind feet and beaver-like tail.Their eyes and ears close with a watertight seal. Swimming blind theyrely on their sensitive bill to find food. The bills are equipped withelectroreceptors (electronic sense) that pick up on electronic pulses thatliving things give off. These Australian mammals are bottom feeders. They scoop up insectsand larvae, shellfish, and worms in their bill along with bits of graveland mud from the bottom. All this material is stored in cheek pouchesand, at the surface, mashed for consumption. Platypuses do not haveteeth, so the bits of gravel help them to “chew” their meal. On land, platypuses move a bit more awkwardly. However, the web-bing on their feet retracts to exposeindividual nails and allow the crea-tures to run. Platypuses use theirnails and feet to construct dirt bur-rows at the water’s edge. Platypus reproduction is nearlyunique. It is one of only two mam-mals (the echidna is the other) thatlay eggs.

One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother dothe dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that hermother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contraston her brunette head. She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, “Why aresome of your hairs white, Mom?” Her mother replied, “Well, every time that you do somethingwrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turnswhite.” The little girl thought about this revelation for a while andthen said, “Momma, how come ALL of grandma’s hairs arewhite?”

A Sunday school teacher asked her class, “What was Jesus’mother’s name? One child answered, “Mary.” The teacher then asked, “Who knows what Jesus’ father’sname was?” A little kid said, “Verge.” Confused, the teacher asked, “Where did you get that?” The kid said, “Well, you know, they’re always talking aboutVerge n’Mary.”

A Little Laugh...Providing for the Family It had been many years since the embarrassing day when the youngwoman, with a baby in her arms, entered his butcher shop. She con-fronted him with the news that the baby was his and asked what he wasgoing to do about it? After a long discussion, he offered to provide her with free meat untilthe boy was 16. She agreed. He had been counting the years off on his calendar. One day the boywho had been collecting the meat each week came into the shop andsaid, “I’ll be 16 tomorrow.” “I know,” said the butcher with a smile. “I’ve been counting too. When you take this parcel of meat home, tell your mother that it is thelast free meat she’ll get. Watch the expression on her face.” When the boy arrived home he told his mother what the butcher hadsaid. She just smiled and said, “Son, go back to the butcher and tellhim I have also had free bread, free milk, and free groceries for the last16 years and watch the expression on HIS face!”
