I.B.M. Ring 50s January 5thmeeting was opened by President

    Arnie Fuoco. Seventy-Four

members and guests were present.Tommy Meeker (37714M) of

Annandale VA, a former membermany years ago of Ring 50, wasre-instated into the Ring and

welcomed aboard. A Counts ofConjuring youth member KarlKeat (69113J) of Alexandria VA,was voted into the Ring.

    .uestions covered many areas relate

to performing magic. Manyquestions were discussed in depth. The following are just some of thehighlights.

One person asked how toovercome anxiety or shakinghands while performing card

tricks. Several members of the panel gave suggestions. Most all

    performers have a certain amount

of nervousness before a performance. Over time you may

overcome some of this but not all.Mainly practice and build your

confidence in the effect you are performing. You can always usethe gag line from Hugh Turley ,

My hands a shaking because Ilearned this trick in Minnesota.Al Cohen once said: Just tell

them a story that you just got offthe plane from Alaska, and youare still recovering....

    Another person said he

occasionally would like toperform using a stage illusion likea sub-trunk or Zig-Zag but doesnt

    have the resources for building,

The 50/50 drawing was won byEric Wolfson and he donated the

money to Ring 50. The youth

attending the most Counts ofConjuring meetings for 2010 was

Avi Littky and he was awarded apaid membership in the I.B.M. for2011. Congratulations to Avi!

    President Arnie Fuoco

introduced the lecturer for theevening, Andrew Mayne. Mayneis a magician, paranormalillusionist, inventor, TV producer,

and skeptic. He was the secondyoungest illusionist to everembark on a world tour. He

performed in resorts, on luxuryliners and exotic locales aroundthe world. Bored with putting

beautiful girls into boxes only to be cut in half, Mayne decided tocall it quits on anything that was

beginning to look like a normal

career in magic. Although anestablished performer at the top of

his career, there wasn't a place forthe kind of magic Andrew reallywanted to perform. Then through

    books and DVDs, Mayne's unique

ideas began to spread throughoutthe magic community. He is

widely considered one of the most

    creative magicians of hisgeneration.

His lecture featured never-seen-before unpublished material. He showed visual, practical real-

world magic that you will beusing. The material ranged fromclose-up, stage, mentalism andeven illusion. He'll explain his

creative process and showed howyou can apply it to your ownshow. The audience was able to

learn some of his incredibleimpromptu effects using everydayitems suitable for close-up andstage.

Mayne began the lecture byunfolding an apparently empty

grocery bag. Suddenly a bowlingball fell from the bag to the floorwith a thud. He went on to explain

BBBuuuffffffeeetttWe have had a very good

relationship with the Managementof the Holiday Inn. They give usthe meeting room free in return forour members eating at the

Eisenhower Station Restaurant inthe hotel. The restaurant justifiably expects those to whomit gives meeting space to USE itsdining facilities.

Over the last few months hotel

management has noted the Ring50 attendance at the dining roomhas dwindled. This may

jeopardize our relationship for thefree meeting room. The people atthe Holiday Inn have been morethan courteous to us. Members areencouraged to make a concertedeffort to eat dinner at theRestaurant. So come to themeeting at 6:30, have a nice mealin the dining room, chat with the

other members, and then attendthe Ring 50 meeting.

brought aprospectivemember to themeeting? They must be interestedin magic and be a member of theInternational Brotherhood of

President John Roberts jumped quickly intothe program portion of the meeting, and got thingsrolling with one of his quick tricks, which by theway, was the theme of this months meeting. Johntried to show us a flash cube effect, but it went off

prematurely. I think I heard him mumblesomething that being the story of his life Im notreal sure what he meant. Ask him the next time.

Next, Ray Eyler brought out a packet of cardswith holes cut out of the center. A spectatorsfinger was placed through the open card and a

solid card was forced down through the slot. Wasthis a card trick or finger chopper? Well the fingerwas ok, so it must have been a card trick.

Jack Nance blew our minds with a packeteffect Four blue back cards of different suitssingly reversed themselves within the packet. Asnap and they all became red backed cards. Thenthe red backs went back to blue. Jack showed ushow this was done. MIRRORS! All four cards hadchanged to mirrored back cards. Super trick Jack! Dick Steiner spends a lot of time rehearsing, and it shows in everything he does. As a full-time

mentalist, you expect good things, and Dickdelivers. A random setting was made on his watch.Spectator one calls out a single digit, spectator twocalls another. A third spectator calls out anotherdigit. ONE, TWO, SEVEN The time on thewatch one twenty-seven. A total fooler.

Sarge-at-Arms Bob Greenwald stepped up todizzy us with a gem stick containing differentstones, one color was selected, and with a wave ofthe hand, the stones all became the selected color.

Eric Wolf performed Paul Harris linkingcards. Holes were ripped into two cards. In a blink

the cards were popped together; linked. The onlyway to separate them was to tear into the holes.

how this was done and how to obtain the materialswhile traveling. He also included several otherideas to vary the production from the bag insteadof a bowling ball, such as a cup of coffee or bottleof wine. Next he had a spectator select a magazineand to slide a card into the magazine at any page. The spectator was to open the magazine and lookat the picture on that page. Using his mentalism hewas able to describe the

picture on that page.He then went on to

do a favorite part of hisstage routine. Its was adeadly Russian roulettestyle that he calls Shiv

performed with anaudience member. Asharpened pencil was

placed into one of four envelopes and then mixedup. A spectator was given acompletely free choice.One-by-one, the threeenvelopes were smashedinto Maynes chest, stomach, and other vitalareas to no harm. Thelast envelope was rippedopen to reveal thesharpened pencil.

Next up was his versionof a newspaper tear (based

on Jim Steinmeyers Incessant Newspaper). Aspectator was asked to sign a totally unpreparednewspaper right off the newsstand. The magiciantook the paper and ripped it to shreds. He crumpledthe pieces together and then visually restored thenewspaper! The restored newspaper, complete withsignature, was handed back to the spectator toinspect and keep as a souvenir. He then passed outnewspapers for all audience members to practicethe plot.

Maynepresented Ghostbillsa visual close-up illusion usingtwo borrowed bills. Aspectator folded one bill andMayne folded the other. One

bill is placed horizontalityinside of the other. The billswere visually passed through

    one another.

As the lecture was drawing to a close, like allmagicians, he presented a card trick. A deck wasshown front and back. A spectator was asked toselect a card. The card was returned to the deckand Mayne explained this was deck has an

invisible mouse that can find selected cards. Uponspreading the deck face down there were tinymouse foot prints across the back of the deck andstopping at a card. The card was removed and itwas noticed that a piece had been chewed from thecorner. When turned over it was the spectatorscard. All items in Mayne lecture were explainedand many variations and presentations were given.Following the lecture DVDs of the items in thelecture were available for sale. Members of Ring50 and guests all enjoyed this lecture.

Lecture attendees make fantastic purchases from

    Justin Young, Andrew Maynes helper.

YOU KNOW THAT YOU'RE A MAGICIAN

WHEN... There is a pack of cards in sight as you read this. You pull the four aces out of the deck, only tolose them back into the deck, just so you can findthem again!
