MCAS Beaufort Marine Wins Trip to Super Bowl

Cpl Ricky Russell was the lucky win-ner of the 2010 Marine Corps Commu-nity Services (MCCS) Football Bash Grand Prize - a five day/four night, allexpense paid trip for two to Arlington, TX to attend Super Bowl XLV, valuedat over $7,500.

This fall, MCCS clubs and restau-rants across the Corps sponsored the MCCS Football Bash in an effort to get Marines into MCCS facilities for a littlefun, camaraderie, and football. In all, MCCS club and restaurant patrons submitted over 60,000 raffle entries. Official event sponsors included An-heuser-Busch, AT&T, EA Sports, Mrs. T's, PepsiCo, Outback Restaurant, and T-Mobile.

Cpl Russell, with VMFA (AW) 224 of MCAS Beaufort, was UDP to MCAS Iwakuni when he entered the Football Bash. As the winner of the MCAS Iwakuni drawing he was eligible for a 1 in 20 chance at the Grand Prize. His name was drawn during a raffle on 10 December 2010, at HQMC, Per-

sonal and Family Readiness Division, aboard MCB Quantico, VA. SgtMaj Michael S. Timmerman, Personal & Family Readiness Division Sergeant Major, drew the winning ticket (pic-tured).

The Grand Prize winner receives tick-ets for two to Super Bowl XLV, airfare,four nights lodging, a Sony waterproof digital camera, and $500 spending money.

Five Myths AboutVA Health Care Eligibility

Myth Number One

I wasn’t injured in the ser-vice, so I’m not eligible for VA health care.

Status: False

One of the most common myths re-volves around eligibility for health care at VA. Many think that you have to first establish a disability rating before you can start to make appointments, see doctors and receive medication. That is not the case. If you served in the military, even during peace time, and were honorably discharged, you likely qualify for VA care. Even if you don’t meet those requirements, special cir-cumstances might apply, like Vietnam service, exposure to Agent Orange and household income. The best way to find out if you qualify is to submit an application for health benefits online or at a VA Medical Center. If you are an Iraq or Afghanistan Veteran, there are special combat Veteran benefits from VA, like temporary access to dental care and guaranteed access to Priority 6 for five years (unless you are eligible for a higher priority group). Also, if new regulations are established regarding health benefits, VA will automatically reassess your case if it’s on file.

Myth Number Two

I can only receive care for service connected injuries.

Status: False

You can receive VA hospital and out-patient care for any ailment, service connected or not, if you are enrolled in the VA healthcare system but you may have to pay a copayment. For example,

if a Veteran is service-connected for a bad knee, any VA hospital and outpa-tient care and medication for the knee is free of charge. However, if the same Vet goes into surgery to remove an ap-pendix and it’s not service connected, he may be subject to a co-pay depend-ing on the amount of his disability rat-ing and other factors. Be sure to famil-iarize yourself with co-pay guidelines and rates.

A small number of Veterans, such as those with bad conduct discharges that VA has determined were issued under conditions other than honorable and who are not subject to certain statutory bars to benefits, can only be treated for their service connected disabilities and nothing else. If one of those Vets is service connected for their left foot, they can only use VA health care for their left foot and nothing else.

Myth Number Three

I make too much money to qualify for VA health care.

Status: It depends

If you do not have a service connected disability, you may want to use VA’s fi-nancial calculator to see if you qualify for free VA care, medication and trav-el benefits. If your income is too high (over a maximum income level set ev-ery year), you may have to pick up the tab for traveling and receive your care and medication by paying a co-pay. Recently the rules have been changed for Priority 8 Veterans to permit more of them to enroll for VA health care.

Myth Number Four

I can’t use VA health care if I have private health in-surance.

Status: False

From VA’s Health Eligibility Center Di-rector Tony Guagliardo:

“We strongly encourage Veterans to receive all your health care through VA. However, if you choose to receive treatment from private doctors, VA will work with them to meet your health care needs and coordinate effective treatment. We call this Co-managed Care or Dual Care - which means that your VA and private doctors will work together to provide safe, appropriate, and ethical medical care.”

Myth Number Five

If I’m 100 percent disabled, that means I’m permanent-ly disabled.

Status: False

You could have a 100 percent disabil-ity rating as a temporary status while you undergo surgery, and have it re-duced to its previous rating after you heal. 100 percent doesn’t necessarily stay with you.

My hope is that this information sheds a little light on the sometimes confus-ing realm of VA medical care. These myths and answers are very general, but you can contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to dispel any myths that you make have about the VA.

recipeChicken Breasts Stuffed with Goat Cheese and Sun-Dried TomatoesStuffed chicken breasts are a great way to add flavor and retain moisture in chicken. Use a paring knife to cut the small pocket into the chicken breasts. Serve this dish with orzo or rice to soak up the shallot-thyme sauce.

ingredients:1 cup boiling water1/3 cup sun-dried tomatoes, packed without oil2 teaspoons olive oil, divided1/2 cup chopped shallots, divided1 1/2 teaspoons sugar3 garlic cloves, minced2 1/2 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar, divided1/2 cup (2 oz) crumbled goat cheese2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil

Cut a horizontal slit through thickest por-tion of each chicken breast half to form a pocket. Stuff about 2 tablespoons cheese mixture into each pocket. Sprinkle chick-en evenly with 1/2 teaspoon salt and black pepper.

Heat 1 teaspoon oil in pan over medium-high heat. Add chicken; cook 6 minutes on each side or until done. Remove chick-en from pan; cover and keep warm. Add broth, remaining shallots, 2 tablespoons vinegar, and thyme; bring to a boil. Com-bine cornstarch and water, stirring with a whisk. Add cornstarch mixture to pan; bring to a boil. Cook 1 minute or until sauce is slightly thick, stirring constantly. Serve sauce over chicken.

Health MythsAs January starts a new year, we are all motivated to start new programs or activ-ities that will help us lead healthier lives. Here are some health myths that may surprise you:

• Milk creates phlegm. Studies among people affected with cold viruses found that drinking milk does not in-crease nasal secretions.

• Cold weather causes colds and flu. Cold temperatures may keep you indoors, where germs spread more

These are NOT golf lessons. It is a pro-gram to teach kids core values through the avenue of golf. There are nine core values taught which are: honesty, integ-rity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy,

One in Three Fatally Injured are 'Drugged Drivers'Many times we think exclusively of alcohol and impaired driving only, not tak-ing into account the countless number of impaired drivers on the road due to other drugs.

Many are prescribed pain medication to help with the aches and pains that may be a product of intense training or recovery from an injury. These drugs are potent and decrease all levels of response, reaction and mental awareness. We are more aware all the time through law enforcement and clinical data that individuals are often combining alcohol with these potent drugs.

The second annual Family, Fitness and Fun program is back to get peo-ple moving, motivated and eating healthy. This program is brought to you by MCRD Parris Island Commis-sary, Semper Fit, and Marine Corps Community Services. Registration be-gins 7 January at the MCRD Commis-sary. Meet your family’s health goals by participating in a variety of events that will contribute to the health of your family’s mind, body and soul. From fun runs (or walks!) or Zumba for kids to a Q&A session with a panel of doc-tors, Family, Fitness and Fun includes activities for everyone. The program’s big finale is during the Commissary’s May Case Lot Sale and the MCX's Big Blow Out Sale where prizes and give-aways will be awarded.

The Retirement/Tap WorkshopA 5-day workshop is the Retirement portion covering action planning, nature of the job market, Tricare, SBP, Delta Dental, small business and financial planning. The TAP portion of the workshop covers skills assessment, resume and cover letters, interview-ing techniques, networking, converting.

Pre-Separation BriefA 1-day brief that is mandatory for all separating military personnel. Topics discussed are veteran’s benefits, medical coverage, financial planning, disbursing, household goods, education benefits, reserve opportunities, relocation assistance and employment.

VA Medical Records ReviewA 1-day workshop designed to assist service members in filing disability compensation claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs prior to leaving active duty.

Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) WorkshopThis workshop is recommended for service members and their spouses. It was estab-lished to provide a monthly income to survivors of retired military personnel upon the member's death when retired pay stops.

Career Assessment WorkshopCOPS, CAPS, COPES is a three part assessment used individually or together to help individuals identify interests, learn about their abilities and determine their personal values which play an important part in occupational selection and job satisfaction.

Federal Employment WorkshopIntroduction to the Federal Employment System. In this workshop we will identify re-sources to locate federal jobs. Look at vacancy announcement. Talk about the appli-cation process. Go over forms that are used in the federal employment system. Basic information about the application for Federal Employment.

Interview Strategies WorkshopVisit the Family Member Employment As-sistance Program and sign for our next Inter-view Strategies workshop to be successful in your next interview. Learn how to prepare, what to expect and how to respond appro-priately during an interview. Understand the importance of good communication skills, including verbal and nonverbal cues. "She delivered punch line after punch line leaving the audience clutching their sides," was how "The Boot" described April Vanhoof's Oct. 28 2010 performance aboard Parris Island. Vanhoof is back this year to enter-tain audiences at Parris Island's Brig & Brew. Vanhoof is the Drill Instructor School administrative chief with the Recruit Training Regiment aboard Marine Corps Re-cruit Depot Parris Island. She started performing stand up comedy in Virginia Beach in February 2007, and has been keeping audiences on their toes ever since. "I used to go to watch different comedians in Virginia Beach, and thought to myself, if they can do it why can't I? It's a fun hobby," Vanhoof says in "The Boot" article, "Jokes and laughter fills Burners." Don't miss a performance that is sure to keep you entertained on 12 January at Brig & Brew starting at 1830.

Report cards are coming soon. Did you know that report cards with a "B" average can be redeemed for a prize each grading period at the MCX? Don't forget to bring your Super Star Student's report card to the MCX at Laurel Bay or Parris Island.

Last grading period students with a "B" average or higher turned in their report cards to the MCX at Laurel Bay or at Parris Island for the scratch off card that pertained to their grade level. Grades K-5 receive a selection card for prizes that include a MCX gift card or discounts at the movie theaters or bowling alley. Grades 6-12 are eligible for prizes that include MCX gift cards and U.S. savings bonds up to $1,000.

Congratulations to Sierra Chaplin, whose lucky scratch off card revealed that she was the recipient of a $1,000 savings bond. On Thursday, 4 November 2010, Sierra Chaplin was encouraged by her mother to bring her report card into the Parris Island MCX to participate in the Super Star Student program after she read about the program in Happenings.

Sierra, the daughter of a retired U.S. Army veteran, is in the 12th grade and a straight “A” student at the Beaufort–Jasper Academy for Career Excellence. She enjoys cheerleading and gymnastics, and her favorite subject is English. She plans to attend the Technical Col-lege of the Lowcountry next fall.

Military Academic Skills Program (MASP)

Register for Spring II Classes

Come apply and register now for the spring se-mester. It’s not too late! Registration for Spring II courses is currently taking place and will con-tinue through 5 March 2011. Classes will begin 15 March.

For a listing of classes being offered you may view the course schedule at tcl.edu or visit the TCL office located in the Education Building. Please make sure you submit an application and select a program of study prior to submit-ting SMART transcripts for review. SMART tran-scripts can help you earn possible course credit in your area of study.

Active duty and dependents are eligible to re-ceive the college's in-state tuition rate of $140 per credit hour. Anyone interested will need to bring a copy of PCS orders to Beaufort along with their military ID.

You may qualify for the South Carolina lottery Tuition Assistance Program which can up to 70% of your tuition. You do not have to dem-onstrate financial need to qualify for this spe-cial state funding. Also check the Military One Source (www.militaryonesource.com) website to learn about additional financial assistance available to dependents.

LIBRARYGame Room and Renovations at the Air Station Library

The library on the Air Station is starting the year out right. The library was closed for renovations, but now the staff and patrons are welcoming the new year with a brand new library. Our “new” library is painted and contains a beautiful new carpet. We also are boasting the addition of over $25,000.00 in new books on many subjects that have been specifically requested by patrons. The most exciting addition includes a game room. Pa-trons may sign out game consoles and one of 22 games from either the Wii collection or the XBOX 360 collection. All are welcome to join the fun.

Game Room Now Available at the Parris Island Library

The staff at the Parris Island Library would like to introduce an exciting addition to the library. The game room is now complete and features two systems. The first is the Wii col-lection and includes games such as Rebel Raiders, Toy Story 3, Marines, Mario Gal-axy 2, NCAA Football and many more. The XBOX 360 collection includes Star Wars, Call of Duty, Forza Motorsport, Virtual Ar-cade, Fable II and many more. Please see one of the library technicians at the circula-tion desk to sign out a game and necessary equipment. We sincerely hope that all pa-trons enjoy this edition to the library and look forward to your comments and suggestions.

Christmas Memories

Santa’s mailbox was successful at both li-braries. The letters were combined and sent off the North Pole. After speaking to a few patrons the librarian understands that many children actually received an answer from one of Santa’s elves. On 15 December San-ta visited the PI library, and on 16 December Santa visited the Air Station Library. Santa moved to room 114 because the library was being renovated. Many children had pic-tures taken with Santa. A fun time was had by all. We would like to thank the wonderful firemen for volunteering to watch the rein-deer at the end of the tarmac while fire truck brought Santa to each location.

New Titles

"Pearl Buck in China: Journey to the Good Earth" by Hilary Spurling. The story of the one of the twentieth century’s most extraordinary Americans who made China accessible to the west. Buck was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature.

"My Life with the Taliban" by Barnett R. Rubin. An autobiography of a senior mem-ber of the Taliban supplies a counter-nar-rative to standard accounts of Afghanistan since 1979.

"The High Graders" by Louis L’Amour. The ranching town of Rafter Crossing, expe-riencing a boom as a result of the newfound wealth from the mines, is already simmering when Mike rides in. The cattlemen and the miners are at odds over polluted range wa-ter and what the ranchers feel is the theft of the high-grade ore. Following a murder, it's up to Mike to try to calm all sides.

"Hollywood Hills" by Joseph Wambaugh. Although LAPD veteran 'Hollywood Nate' Weiss could take or leave the opulence of Hollywood, he wouldn't say no to onscreen fame. When he's asked to keep an eye on the estate of director Rudy Ressler, he thinks this might be his 'in.' But he soon dis-covers protecting the mansion and its con-tents is hard work after two valuable paint-ings are stolen, not once, but twice.

"The Shadow War" by Glen Scott Allen. Summoned to Massachusetts by an old friend, Benjamin arrives to discover that his friend has been killed and the person hired to investigate his death has also been mur-dered. Clues point to a militaristic conspira-cy. Benjamin teams up with a beautiful Rus-sian cultural attaché to find the truth. (First novel)
